I have such a hate and love relationship with The Visitor and many times i don't really know why. Maybe because i expected more exposition from what we got about it.
"Did we just become best friend's!!" I honestly never really looked into why Guts and Hellboy have always been 2 of my favorite characters in geek culture and with my multiple times reading Miuras masterpiece and yeaars (13yrs+) of the hellboy universe being in my comic "pull list" I've never once thought to examining the parallels. I just thought i was too edgy for my own good. Now i see they are opposite sides of a real strange coin. Thank you for helping me see this. It's like when i find out Stephen Summers Directed 1999's The Mummy (one of my favorite movie) aaaand 2004's Van Helsing (My most guilty pleasure).
The mummy and van helsing are 2 of the best movies to watch when ur bored. They were just fun to watch and the lore for van helsing is super interesting.
When I think of a “hero” it’s kinda hard not to think about the more traditional hero in a costume “it’s my duty to protect the innocent and save the world” kinda guy. And Hellboy does literally all of that, but for me it was more Heroic to see an extremely reserved and sad dude dig himself out from his own horrible circumstances and never dragging anyone down with him because of it. That’s a very nice way to look at a hero
Mike Mignola's artwork gives me Jack Kirby vibes. The style is rustic, simplistic, and the world building and story it is used to create and push enhances it so much due to the detail and grand scale. I love it!
I honestly think it's a shame comics couldn't work in NA america the same way Manga works in Japan, and actually, everywhere else, cause there are a lot of really great stories told in the format. Graphic fiction as a whole really has tons of value and I think its a shame it doesn't have as much casual appreciation as it deserves.
A lot of that has to do with the way the market has changed over the course of the past 30 years. I don't think the current comic market in North America could handle a return to newsstands or the like given their inherent niche. I'm gonna do an essay or something about this exact problem someday, but I do agree it's quite a shame.
What I personally love about Hellboy, is how he is effortlessly badass, and also completly lame, in such an endearing way. In a vaccum, a gunsling demon detective who sawed off his own horns and fights monsters on the regular is such a cool concept, but then you hear him say the corniest one-liners, like he _wants_ to sound badass. It grounds him in a really nice way. I also love how *nice* he is: he's a bit grumpy and quite stoic, sure, but from the first comic you see how much he cares for other people, how he chooses to be good in spite of his fate (and how much it fucks him over). He's also good with kids, quite patient, and barely curses, which you don't expect from a guy with his looks. Mike Mignola could have so easily gone with the "badass male power fantasy that treats everyone like shit" trope, but instead he made one of my favorite comic characters.
Hellboy himself has a somewhat childlike quality to him imo (and that's probably intentional, given he's not Hellman), something like childish purity of heart. In a way, his vibe reminds me of Superman - an alien raised by decent people.
I feel like Hellboy breaks so many molds. From it's abstract presentation in art to how Hellboy interacts with the world around him. It's a one of a kind series in my opinion and one that should have a light casted on it more often. Lots of people were disappointed by the last film, but at least we got two good ones, two solid animated films, and a great TV pilot of Screw On Head. Hellboy sadly has never enjoyed a good video game outing. Despite the material offering plenty of potential for a great video game adaptation. Unfortunately, the gaming world has not show any interest in adapting Hellboy. A shame since the game could be a tapestry of exploration, unique character/world interactions, and unique combat.
A hellboy game would be absolutely sick. I can imagine something of a fusion between L.A Noir and The Wolf Among Us for tone wise with maybe God of War for combat and gameplay wise. That'd be so dopee
@@MuhammadIrfan-oe5su Nah. It'd be Soulsborne combat for sure. Apparently, Dark Souls took more than a little inspiration from Berserk, so it wouldn't be too bad to borrow from that a bit, imo.
Hellboy changed me as a person for the better, and helped me through the pandemic and the passing of my dad a year ago.The character of Hellboy inspired me to stay strong in these troubling times. It’s one of the best stories ever told, let alone among American comic books, where it’s typical to maintain the status quo and completely undo any changes made to the characters and lore. Hellboy is amazing because the story is allowed to progress and Hellboy himself turns corners of character progression and is never reset. Those are the same things that attracted me to Invincible and they’re the things that separate the masterworks in comics from the politicized, vapid corporate schlock Marvel and DC are pushing out. It makes me happy to see this book getting some more attention. Thank you for making this video.
"Good stories end" there Is an essay about Hellboy where the author talla about it, saying that Hellboy Is a weird mix of an USA cómic allowed to end and tell it's story. And it Is true. The last part was powerful. ‘Holding on to Berserk because we never knew the ending.” I was never into anime that much but Berserk was amazing. It taught me that even though the world is full of so many snakes and monsters - we can beat every last one of them down into submission. I sometimes even think that all of this fight happen internally with our thoughts. We fight of so many bad thoughts that are toxic to us. We should fight them off one by one without mercy until we are happy with life. No matter how dark it can be - be thankful of the simplest things. As simple as being able to breath with our nose or even being able to taste how sweet a mango fruit can be. That is the ultimate emotional strength. It got me emotional sometimes. I didn’t know anime could be this deep. I want to watch more and I did. I found anime amazing.

I feel like comics have never been main stream and there’s never been a big community for it so it’ll be really cool if like Berserk Hellboy sees a sudden spike in popularity. God knows Hellboy is long overdue some real love and attention. Mignola’s art style is also so unique and adds so much to the tone of the comics. He deserves more praise as an artist
Odd enough, I never read American comics - discovered manga in 1999, and then moved to Tokyo in 2005 and became a manga apprentice for Fist of the North Star creator, Tetsuo Hara. While I worked there, I got a bit sick of manga as it had become my life - so when one day I walked into a shop that carried comics from the USA, the cover of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction called to me. I bought it and took it home .... soon after I returned and bought ALL of the Hellboy & B.P.R.D. comics, and action figures that the shop had to offer. Still one of my all time favorite series. Great video dude.
After reading Hellboy, I've noticed some similar themes between it and Berserk. Like going against fate and destiny, forging your own path, the protagonist loses an eye, and both use large weapons to fight their enemies. And both can be mistaken as the bad guy. Edit: You made a great Hellboy video. There are few videos discussing the greatness of the Hellboy comic, and I wish more more content creators would make analysis videos on Hellboy. It's truly a great series and one I would recommend to anyone who likes Berserk. Also you earned yourself a subscriber!
In the early 2000s I first read “The Chained Coffin and Others” and I always tell folks to start there. The stories are perfect for setting up HB’s character and how he exists as only a part of that weird paranormal world. Also, The Wolves of Saint August is some of Mignola’s best art/writing. It makes reading his origin later even more engaging because you are now more invested into the character and world. Furthermore, Lobster Johnson rules.
Hellboy pretty became a major part of my life five years ago and I'm still collecting. Then in 2020, I read through Berserk and made some connections between the 2 fictional characters I love the most, good to know I wasn't the only one lol. As someone who has made a video essay about Hellboy's mythological journey, I truly loved this, nice work dude :).
I'm one of those Hellboy fans that actually started with the comics (specifically the omnibus editions) and then watched the movies and other things surrounding the character. Good video man!
“Challenge themselves to read left to right” 😂 SO TRUE! Happens whenever I read Korean comics. It makes me rethink how many hours I put into manga and how it changed the way I read
I'll be honest, I was wary fo the clickbaity title because the experience of reading Berserk and Hellboy was so different. I was expecting some spiel about "BOTH ARE STOIC BADASSES BEATING MONSTERS WITH A DARK ARTSTYLE", but the fact that you tied their similarities to the narratives is actually quite engaging. More Hellboy readers is always good!
So having never read Berserk, I'm not sure of the comparisons. But HellBoy is a masterpiece. Wasn't aware of all the controversy surrounding the editor. I managed to read the story in chunks with the trades and now I'm finding there's a lot of HellBoy outside of the main story arc for me to read which again I'm acquiring in chunks. My favorite story arc so far is "Darkness Calls". That whole thing with the Baba Yaga, Koschei the Deathless and Vasilisa is epic on a level few stories achieve. It's making me want to delve deeper into Russian folklore and read the original versions of these characters.
glad to see someone talking about the actual hellboy comics, personally I've never even seen the movies but grew up reading all the comics so that's the only side of it I really know, and can definitely confirm the comics are massively underrated. thanks for the great vid!
I have hellboy and berserk tattoos on my legs, absolutely love both series. Really glad someone made a video comparing these two, they are similar in many ways but have so much to offer. Also really glad Darkhorse makes beautiful omnibus copies of both as well 😆 have them all right next to eachother.
BPRD deserves a video as well. How it narrates human emotion and reaction to facing doomsday from an working class or grunt level soldier its great. Specially the one shot stories. I need an extra pandemic to re read the hole thing
I recently met Mike Mignola at a convention and asked him to take a picture as nicely as I could. I knew he was probably tired, but fuck it. Worth it. His work is legendary
I have one nitpick in that Liz Sherman isn't really Hellboy's girlfriend and never was (except in the movie). Their relationship is that of a brother and sister
That’s sooo funny, I read bellboy in Mexico inside a Barnes and nobles when I was in Highschool and that made me start searching for the rest and eventually reading it all online through multiversity’s order and then getting the whole physical collection for myself and finally a hellboy right hand of doom tatt on my right hand, and then starting to watch berserk just to have it not end🥲

I can see several parallels on berserk with some western comics (art/script) like Prince Valiant, the Roy Thomas/John Buscema long run on Conan, Alfredo Alcala's Voltar and specially Elric by Michael Moorcock's (Stormbringer, Melniboné and the way that society works just to point two examples). Of course they're both forerunners of sword and sorcery/dark fantasy genre as a whole so obviously everyone after them will have some percent of influence, even Tolkien read Conan, but never on hellboy. What always bringed me to Mignola's work was his huge research on folklore from everywhere. Really nice video

Hellboy's reluctance to take the clear path to do whatever he wants really sets him apart and character development. This definitely has some shonen parallels. The religious / occult aspects and comedic dark mood of hellboy remind me of chainsawman, and hellboy's episodic wandering from place to place nature remind of BLAME! Hellboy. When People say Manga are Better than Comics, it Sounds more like an Insult of yourself. You can't Compare them. Because if there are Good Manga's, then there are Good Comics as well. If Manga has The Best Stories such as Berzerk, that doesn't mean that Comics are complete BS. There are a lot of things that make them diffrent. Diffrent Concepts, Habits etc. Like there's no Fight between Comics or Manga. Because if a Person would read only Comics and They'd hate Manga, The Manga only Manga readers would say pretty much the same about Comics.
The only Manga I have ever desired to and gone out of my way to read was Berserk and similarly the only Comic being Hellboy. Berserk was for it's story and because of it's influence and all the usual reasons people hype the hell out of it. Reading it for the art was secondary, I only found out it's art was top notch quite a while after I had learned through cultural osmosis how great the rest of it was. Hellboy however was purely for aesthetic reasons, I always liked Hellboys design and I loved Mike's artstyle, aside from cool demon man hunts mythological monsters and occult stuff as a paranormal government agent I kinda knew nothing going in so it's fun to see the two compared here despite me seeking them out for different reasons.
I have all the main comics, the short stories, started collecting Abe, and plan to get the BPRD series. It is a sin that more comic people have not read this masterpeice of a story

I just found your channel recently and dang man you've got some great stuff and seeing you delve into comics with the same enthusiasm as manga is great, I know western comics aren't the monolith they were back then but there's still so many compelling characters and amazing stories that can be explored and I'm glad your bringing light to that, you just earned a sub!
I'm so happy someone is throwing some love Hellboy's way. But I've got to say "Obvious love interest"..? For who.? Hellboy was clearly more of a father figure. Maybe for Abe.? Abe seemed to like her but she was interested in someone else.
Nah i think America's Berserk would be Mike Mignola's Baltimore: The story of a skilled monster slaying amputee forever cursed to fight dark monstrosities and hunt a guy with giant Bat wings in a dark and grim world where ancient horrors and monsters awaken more and more everyday like a giant snake guy and militant religious organizations who themselves see our main character as a monster himself hunt him down, lots of innocent people who help him die and he finds himself being just as vicious as the monsters he hunts.

@@monsterdrinkingtax2072 Indeed, the first two or three volumes retells some of the stuff in the novel, but with more focus on Baltimore than his companions, and I think that is ultimately something that hurt those later volumes even more since the companions, both those original ones and some new ones get increased prominence, but with very little backstory. In the novels three of his companions that have never met each other before meet in a bar, waiting for Baltimore to arrive they each tell their stories of how they came into contact with the man. You thus get to know them as intimately as Baltimore himself.
The long road to the ends of Hellboy and BPRD stories is a really unique one. HB is one of the best protagonists in comics, and BPRD went places I never would have guessed with an ensemble cast.

I honestly never really looked into why Guts and Hellboy have always been 2 of my favorite characters in geek culture and with my multiple times reading Miuras masterpiece and yeaars (13yrs+) of the hellboy universe being in my comic "pull list" I've never once thought to examining the parallels.
Van Helsing 2004 is also my guilty pleasure movie 😂
Let's be honest here, anything Hugh Jackman is in is a pleasure.
The mummy and van helsing are 2 of the best movies to watch when ur bored. They were just fun to watch and the lore for van helsing is super interesting.
Hellboy: Jeez, man. What's your damage?
Guts: th-cam.com/video/q-XiamZM09M/w-d-xo.html
I like the characters who treat others with respect beyond "you're pretty strong, huh?" way more too.
"BOOM!"
In the way that you said, Hellboy reminds me a lot of Geralt of Rivia
I always thought his sawed off horns were red goggles until I saw this comment and took a closer look 😭
His appearance in Injustice 2 as a DLC character was amazing! Probably the coolest addition to that game. They really did him justice there.
@@MuhammadIrfan-oe5su Nah. It'd be Soulsborne combat for sure. Apparently, Dark Souls took more than a little inspiration from Berserk, so it wouldn't be too bad to borrow from that a bit, imo.
@@SomeRandomJackAss honestly, my immediate thought was heavier devil may cry combat wise, since his toolset would make sense with that.
I really want a Hellboy video game.
Hellboy and Berserk are my all time favorite comic/manga series I've ever read. And seeing this video just makes me happy
I remember when Mignola was writing "Hellboy in Hell" and he, the author says, paraphasing of, course " i was going yo continue writing his stories forever, then it ended."
I think what I love most about Berserk and hellboy is that the creators both love devil man and take inspiration from them

Feel the same about hellboy, there's just nothing like it. Hellboy is unique, beautiful and uniquely beautiful.
We fight of so
many bad thoughts that are toxic to us.
This was beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

Wow. Just Wow. This video is really just great. I have never seen a this short convince me to read a series before, but you did it. The video that got me to read Berserk was an hour 30. I'm definitely reading all of Hellboy before the end of the year. Thank you.
By any chance was that Super Eyepatch Wolf's video?
Fellow Hell boy fan's constant refusal to read the comics, the best medium of the character, baffles and pisses me off at the same time.
I only watched until 3:37 and i think that's all i need to hear, i'm completely sold on reading Hellboy
As someone who has loved Hellboy (both Del Toro films and comics) it’s so weird to see a video like this only just now.
After finishing the main Hellboy, I think it's about time for Hellboy to get its own animated series.
You had me locked in when you combined 2 of my favorite fictional characters of all time. For you to relate them Is the ultimate video for me.
Another similar comic that is amazing is Eric Powell’s the Goon. It actually had a crossover with hellboy too!
You, Sir, have taste!
The Goon slaps
Hell yeah!
Huh, the crappy weirdness of The Goon's world is really comparable to the world of Berserk
The hellboy series is nothing short of a masterpiece in the comics medium as a whole, glad to see it get some love here!
Hellboy is the best comic books have to offer. Depth, emotion, atmosphere, humor, action.... everything done beautifully.
If someone made a HellBoy anime by studio shaft I’d be the happiest person on earth
Mignola is one of the greatest comic artists ever imo.
Your video was great ! I also know you from twitter lmao
I read whole Mignolas library collection. It's so good. My favorite stories are Conqueror Worm, Pancakes, and Macoma.
You made my night man. Hellboy is my favorite series of anything. Great parallels I never considered before.
I've always liked Hellboy as a character but never picked up the comics. Your title drew me in and the video sold me, can't wait to start.
Guts isn't stoic. And woah I remember you from the MAWs stuff
I remember playing Hellboy for the ps2, man that game got me into the comics so I could learn about the lore
"Look pal, I'm not the best shot but the Samaritan here uses really big bullets."

@@ape37 I meant read my bad, yea def through the manga for sure, still sad, didn’t end 🥲, hope that one piece still will be completed if not I’m just destroyed as a person 🤣

Loved the Del Toro movies, and I've always debated buying the comics. I think this has finally pushed me over the edge to buy them
I can see several parallels on berserk with some western comics (art/script) like Prince Valiant, the Roy Thomas/John Buscema long run on Conan, Alfredo Alcala's Voltar and specially Elric by Michael Moorcock's (Stormbringer, Melniboné and the way that society works just to point two examples).
Thank you!
I could definitely go down the Elric rabbit hole on this channel at some point, I just wanna work my way to it naturally.
@@THEMANGALOG The Japanese editions with the Yoshitaka Amano artwork are going to make for some nice visuals to fold back into the channel’s primary focus. :D
@@THEMANGALOG Please do exactly that. Elric deserves more attention as does his creator. Also, you should check out Edward Wagner's Kane series. It's incredibly dark by any standard and a good comparison to Berserk.

this is probably one of the best youtube videos ive ever watched in my life
Hellboy's reluctance to take the clear path to do whatever he wants really sets him apart and character development. This definitely has some shonen parallels. The religious / occult aspects and comedic dark mood of hellboy remind me of chainsawman, and hellboy's episodic wandering from place to place nature remind of BLAME! Hellboy. Hellboy is one of the greatest panelled works across all genres and mediums. highly recommend it to anyone interested in comics, manga etc etc

Less Hellsing, more pulpy detective comics from the 50s like Dick Tracy or The Shadow.
Glad I’m not the only one who noticed all the Lil similarities btw the 2 series. Excellent vid man, looking forward to the next one

Like yeah,i see the parrallels, but i wouldn't call it that way, because in second half the series kinda loses it's breath.

@@monsterdrinkingtax2072 Yeah the comic definitely lost its way and the pacing really got weird, the second to last volume feeling dragged out while the final volume felt super rushed. But the first few volumes and the original novel are damn good.
@@GoodmansGhost For me the first half of the series(Din't read the novel ,unfortunately,it's really hard to get it in my country) is amazing and for me,those stories are masterpieces, but the other half is just meh for me.
