Build Your Own Custom Goose House

  • Our plan to have the chickens and geese cohabitate together inside the chicken coop didn't work out as well as we had hoped. It didn't take us long to realize that the geese really needed a seperate place of their own - where they wouldn't be tempted to "goose" the chickens sleeping on the roosting bars. In this video, Joe walks you through how he creates a simple-to-build yet inexpensive goose house in order to keep all members of our flock happy, safe and comfortable!

That is one amazing goose house 🏠 well done!! You waterproofed it so well, that’s gonna be nice and dry for them. Loved the colour you painted it too! They all seem pretty happy in there 👏 loved the outtakes 😂😂 blessings, Anita 🌻

Thank you! The girls have been sleeping in it for about a week now and seem to love it!

Well done! Looks like a very nice sturdy goose house! We have been really happy with our hardware cloth skirt at the base of our chicken coop too.

Thank you! We now have the hardware cloth at the bottom of the homes for our chickens, geese and goats. We have no regrets on that choice.

Imma try this for my geese Gunter and Gisella.

We are still quite happy with this door. I did change the battery and its back to normal speed. Unfortunatly unlike chickens you will still need to get Gunter and Gisella in their house at the end of the day as they won't go in on their own.

The only thing I'd add is hardware cloth to cover and open "venting slots" or other unsecured openings as weasels will attack sleeping geese. Nice job

Absolutely, great point! Later, we added hardware cloth and mesh screening over those areas. 🌿 - Rochelle

Great tutorial and a beautiful house… I need to build one for my geese, but I need to be able to get in to clean it… do you crawl in there? It seems the door is small

Thank you so much. You are right that the door is smaller than we would like. It is about two and a half feet tall and two feet wide. The average sized adult can crawl in and out but it is tight. We really wanted to repurpose old windows so we were limited in sizes. If I had my choice it would be at least 3ft tall.

Beautiful house, but how well does it do for the geese during the winter? How cold can it they tolerate before you have to consider extra measures?

Hi Jacinda! Great question! This was our first winter with our geese and this design worked very well. Here in upstate NY, we endured an arctic blast (-20°F) that lasted a few days. During that time, we supplied a flat heat pad made for chicken coops and placed it vertically along the one front window. With lots of bedding, the geese did great in this house throughout the winter 😊 ~Rochelle
