For me the Gen 1 was the real swift. I still remember the goose bumps back in 2005 when I got my hands on a brand new Swift ZXi in Garnet Orange which I had to drive from Cochin to Trivandrum on deserted roads way past mid night. It is one of the most exhilarating drives i have ever had. People were shocked that Maruti could bring out such a car. Ride was stiff, it used to rattle badly, interiors were spartan. But I just still love it. I still remember the orange speedo font with the red needle. In late 2006 the Fiat sourced DDIS then made it an even more potent machine. Gone are those days. I wouldn't mind buying a 2010 Gen 1 ZXi with the K12 motor. That's my favourite Swift of all time. The Gen 3 and so called gen 4 has made the car more democratised for the aam junta. It seems smaller than Gen 2 and a couple of notches down in terms of class. It never appealed to me. Gen 1 had a strong enthusiast fan following and so did the next gen. But car manufacturers don't cater to the enthusiast these days.😢
Vivek ji, as you said MS gives the people what they want . As a result a sporty look evolved from that perspective. If they introduce a strong hybrid version and later as EV then swift stands a chance in reviving the segment as a city car(less range and bootspace anxiety in city drive i guess)being fuel efficient and better drive in Traffic
When we had all hot hatch, we didn't gave much importance to it and when there is nothing left and new hatches are water downing the performance for fuel efficiency, really missing the old golden days were we had the Abarth punto, Baleno Rs, Tiago Rs, VW Polo Gt, Nissan micra, Ford Figo.
Hyundai is trying to be an enthusiastic car owner by adding there N line in India but it doesn't worked the way they wanted..! Even the 120HP i20 line didn't even gave that fun
The only thing i like in this Swift is the exterior styling than the previous gen. I like the interior of the previous one very well, maybe because i like it simple. I love that instrument gauge cluster in previous gen Swift. The new instrument cluster is very boring.

@@rasputin774 well... I have been living with Tata since Indica V2 days. V2, Vista, Dicor, Storme. And I have also had a Toyota for a long time in the form of Liva and Altis. I have seen the best service and the worst. As far as reliability goes, neither Toyota nor Tata has ever left me stranded (touchwood). With the right maintenance, neither of them will trouble you.
This engine is developed with the hybrid technology in mind..As Suzuki doesnt want Toyotas complex hybrid system in their small cars,the series hybrid system debuting next year will be mated with this engine.The K12 engine was a gem.Eventually it will be replaced by this engine in all other cars I think..The emission norms and the strict safety norms are to be blamed I guess for the adieu of k series..😢

The main reason for the success of these vehicles is the time tested 4-cylinder engine with the apt capacity of 1200cc in terms of enough driving power and unbeatable fuel efficiency in comparison with the vehicles in the same segment from various manufacturers. The cutting-off one cylinder from the engine sounds like a death bell for these models, as everyone knows from quite some time there were allegedly movements to kill the public sector car manufacturer MUL, from inside and outside.

Maruti playing the safe game with Swift. Wagon R 1.2 feels to be the most sportiest hatchback from Maruti ironically ! Will there ever be a RS version ? As Vivekji mentioned Maruti will give what the consumer wants so there will definitely be a stickered RS version. Z series engine is in its first iteration. That's why I feel all is watered down. No dual jet, no mild hybrid, lesser power, lower red line. All the upgrades will be saved for future so as to show an evolution of this engine. Happy Motoring. Awaiting track day updates, cheers ✌️

So what I understand is ......hybrids are the bridge to electrics.....and thiz z12 is maruti's bridge to hybrid. They need to keep the show running until they develop series hybrids and also hoping that Govt offers tax deduction for hybrids so that they can sell them for small premium over petrol models. This swift is mechanically degraded machine packed in a cosmetically upgraded cover. Its a pain when manufacturers go overboard for mileage, like the auto start stop button on my baleno. I have to switch it off every time i start the engine. So its better to ignore noises for the time being and buy old 4 cylinder models if you want a car right now. Or best keep your car for 2-3 years and buy a hybrid when its fully developed.

I think they should have kept the k12 and should have launched the z12 with the strong hybrid (may be people won't bother the z12 as the k12 is very fuel efficient and the hybrids come at an extra cost). This will fulfill the requirements of both an enthusiast and a regular customer who needs furl efficiency . And there is no hope for swift sport launch. Swift has lost its identity of being a small fun and a practical package

My 2008 swift vdi has clocked 3,30,000kms so far and it still drives like a charm!

It all comes down to reliability. You can't trust a Tata yet. If you can forget that, it's Altroz any day.

I think they should have kept the k12 and should have launched the z12 with the strong hybrid (may be people won't bother the z12 as the k12 is very fuel efficient and the hybrids come at an extra cost). This will fulfill the requirements of both an enthusiast and a regular customer who needs furl efficiency . And there is no hope for swift sport launch. Swift has lost its identity of being a small fun and a practical package
