    Hi Koala, Sorry to hear about that situation. It seems that the world (and big corporations, govts especially) have become so driven by money / profits that they neglect their workers / citizens. I've had to leave jobs in the past too. You have been blessed with a lot of talents. So, I'm sure that you could find a new position or new source of income in a better place. @@TheKrazyKoala Yes, decided to retire & travel. Luckily managed to do 2 trips before covid-19 lockdown 😁.
      Ex-company talked alot about caring for people but that time the people they let go were mostly my age group. Some I heard were with the company for more than 10 years. Two account managers I work with were told to go immediately on mid afternoon Friday. They were outside at the time & refused to come in & surrender the laptops, passes etc till Monday. I was on 2 years contract that was ending in 2+ plus weeks. My business unit head came to break the news to me looking very upset as he just came from heated discussion with the GM to extend my contract. One of the account manager & me had just won a S$5+M deal 2 months prior. The only notification I received was a letter informing my contract will not be renewed & all bonuses will be be paid.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. Having worked for American companies for most of my working life, I agree with you on American MNCs being warmer/friendlier when it comes to birthdays etc. But ironically and surprisingly, I find the part about hiring and firing, massive frequent org changes with very last minute short notice communication (or lack thereof) also prevalent in large American companies too! It’s really not just a Chinese culture thing, sadly.

      You are right. I interacted with 1 large American retail bank and they were known for their hire-and-fire culture. In fact, most of the layoffs seen in news nowadays are from Western companies.

    • @Hllee6428
      @Hllee6428 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ly8370 Yeah indeed. I think layoffs are more the norm than exception nowadays but the thing about how American companies do so is there's hardly any writings on the wall whatsover. In fact they keep announcing seemingly positive news at every townhall that nobody ever sees an impendimg layoff coming. Till it actually happens! I have personally witnessed some collegues who were promoted (or at least being given some kinda recognition) just months before their layoffs at one of my former American employers...it can be as sudden as.that.....

    Having been through 3 retrenchments. It is best to have your own interest, never the company's and/or your employer's interest. Another advice is to build your own financial moat, and do not depend on salary from working as an employee as soon as possible.

    Everything outside and beyond employment contract are bonus. When the balloon is sinking, someone at the top would just kick some ass OUT literally so that their own jobs are secured. Some bosses can try to put on the pretence of being nice and humane but others just do away with the niceties.

    If you had quit like you said, there's nothing to "negotiate". You leave everything because it's your choice. Then you obfuscate the issue by talking about birthday greetings, lunch with a new joiner etc....irrelevant. yes you were disappointed by how they treat their employees, including yourself, because if you truly quit like you said, why would you care about how they treated YOU during your quitting process?

  • @user-yb9dl6ok9r
    @user-yb9dl6ok9r 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Companies don't lay off people for fun. They do it because they have to. companies that don't, end up going out of business. If you are working for someone you always have to know that you are an 'employee' and you may be asked to leave anytime if the situation arises. If you want to avoid that, start your own business. But yes soon you will find yourself on the opposite end of it. Many high level VPs and execs talk a big game on someone else's dime but aren't successful on their own in their business. I dare everyone here to grow your own team of 2, 4, 8. 10 and sustain it. Pretty soon you will understand all the challenges including why layoffs happen.

    • @TheKrazyKoala
      @TheKrazyKoala  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it can be, for some companies. but not for all. there are xenophobia cultures in some, where they just want to extract things out of you and take over by their own people

      @@TheKrazyKoala I agree! and i think people should stay away from such companies to begin with. How did Alibaba , Shoppe, Lazada hired their team? They paid insane amount of salaries sometimes way out of the scale to Gobble them up from Smaller companies or even other MNCs. It's greed and money that has made everyone ignore all the signs and culture and join them for a higher pay. So all these people have benefited from that move for years before this layoff happened. And believe me more layoffs will come we go deeper in 2024. This is just the beginning.

      I had been laid off 3 times, none of which was due to the company losing money or doing badly. First was sort of department structure change. 2nd was company being bought over. Last one, company was part of big GLC group & GM was cutting senior people (age wise 60s) to make figures look good so that GM will get promoted up to next level of the group. That letting go was done quietly. After covid-19, there was "voluntary separation" so that there's no publicity at all (retrenchment in all but name.
      Retrenchment & being laid off are part & parcel of working life. As in my earlier reply to KKH, just learn to accept it & move forward. I think the reason why KK created this video was the harsh way the retrenchment was carried out. There are more gentle ways that will cause less anguish. My 1st & 3rd time, there was no inkling at all but my bosses spoke to me & explained why it happened, so I didn't feel very disheartened. For the 3rd lay off, my boss told me he fought to retain me. The company just gave me a letter.
      For the 2nd time, it was an actual retrenchment & my boss informed me a month in advance & reasons why I was selected. On the official day of retrenchment, the GM was the one who spoke to me even though my boss & HR manager was there as well. I really appreciated the way that retrenchment was handled with dignity to the affected staff.

They are merciless when it comes to that. If you think that American companies will do better and care about your welfare, sorry to say you are living in neverland. Sounds salty at being laid off than on a facts sharing session. The author should be glad to be given a job in a huge Chinese company in a senior capacity despite her inability to converse and understand Chinese, rather than bad mouthing it after having been laid off like the typical retrenched worker.
    And she ought to correct that part with a sweeping statement about Chinese companies being secretive.
    It should apply to American MNC too, if not more.
    In the end they can hire and they can fire - which is according to the law in Singapore. Take em to court if you have a case, or to MOM or Ntuc.
    If not, stop the badmouthing of your previous company that had given u a lucrative job & opportunity.
    I don't see any palpable gratefulness nor appreciation here.
    In Rome, do what the Romans do.
    If u don't fit in the culture, adapt or leave. Badmouthing in public domains about your benevolent ex employer doesn't earn respect nor reflect well about a worker. You took up the offer with open eyes, but chose to stay on.

    All the humane concepts of how employees should be treated are Western concepts. The working culture in Asia is just way too different. Even local Singaporeans would tell you they much rather work for an “ang mo” company.
    By the way even in western companies in Asia the HR is usually ran by locals and all I can say is that dealing with local HR people is like pulling out your teeth with rusty pliers… it is sad but true. And if they move the HR department to India for the love of God just run for the hills!!!! Their standards are NOT appalling, they are JUST NONEXISTENT !!!
