Just wanted to pop in and express my gratitude for all the incredible support flooding in. I was extremely nervous creating this video because you can never predict how the internet will perceive it, especially when discussing a topic like this one. Reading through each and every one of your comments has been genuinely uplifting and inspiring. Your words and shared experiences make me feel less alone in my journey. Thank you all for nurturing such a positive and empowering community - I appreciate every single one of you ❤
Like most of the comments here, I think your role as a data scientist was what got me to your channel but it's definitely not what made me stay 🥰 Having experienced something very similar in the past, let me assure you that the right thing will come your way and until it does, please just enjoy life as much as possible 💛
Id recommend trying for jobs at universities or governments. Overall, I think those organisations, obviously pay less than Spotify, will offer a better work life balance.
Julia, I bet that some people would trade places with you a Spotify if they knew how much you were making, but only you knew how the stress affected you, and you are very courageous for doing what you did, which is to choose Julia over that stress and that paycheck!
You know what like i am just going to finish my high school and In Sha Allah will land in an institute for my bs in data science. i can't like describe in words how much anxious you made me at some point of this video i was like is this the right carrer for me..., but then the ending and after you talked about your grand father (may his soul rest at peace), you said like in life we move with so many ups and downs, ones life is so unexpected and you said you are grateful for all of this, all that made me to learn so much. I am literally also so much grateful to you, may you live a happy and a life of fulfilment, my best wishes are with you. i will always learn from you. thanks ❤️
stumbled upon your video. I just feel that you are so brave - you took a leap of faith and chose to follow your guts. It is definitely not easy to make this decision. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors and thank you for your inspiring words.
yes. this is why i dropped out of medical school and decided to pursue becoming a drug user. got rid of the life i planned for and invited the life waiting for me!
Don't skip this comment and let me save you 10-15 years of frustration and possible regret. Try to avoid replacing your current job with the same job at a different company. Happiness will come from pursuing passions, and that rarely exists in a corporate/zoom environment. You'll end up in the same place and feel like you've wasted years. Don't get infatuated with brands, companies, or the tech industry. Companies are just a group of people, that's it. And in the tech industry, it's basically the same people and thinking at every company. Especially if it's a public company. What frustrated you at Spotify will be the same frustration somewhere else. I get this will be hard to do, and you'll probably have to go through it yourself to really understand. But if you have the courage and you're willing do it now, I beg you to find what you really love to do, then find a way to make a living at it. The sooner the better.
Yes! Just quit my job last week too and had the same realization as you. Some people aren't just cut out for a 9-5 and I'm one of those people. Few days in and I can already tell it isn't for me and quit in 4 months. The future is so dark just me being in that company. I've never worked for more than 6 months in a job and quitting in just 4 months would definitely hurt my resume and potentiality for future employment. What you said is easier than done now that I'm in the same situation. No ideas for business, talents to share, and stuff like that. This sht is hard man. But I'm funny, at least. I like making other people laugh lol. Not born serious for this world haha
Yeah but what if you don't have a monetizable passion? I like watching planets through a telescope, I like having sex and I like doing nothing. Hard to monetize that lol, so hard work it is.
@@julius43461 the sex thing and doing nothing are most of us dream of but watching planets through a telescope? That's very particular. Find a way to share it be it a yt channel, blog, article etc. You never know -- people may find it interesting. The more unique -- the better. That's what people are looking for. And that's also your selling point.
I'm a 37 year old female in tech. Ive worked in this industry since I was 19. I have been laid off once early on in my career and I also left a job without another one lined up. Both times, things worked out. Two things helped me a lot, financial security and strong interview skills. Work your network, ask for referrals, do mock interviews with people who are in the fields that you want to go into. Most importantly, take care of yourself. Life isn't as scary as people think it is.
Hello! What are mock interviews? Do you mean getting referrals as in collecting some letter-reviews of your work to add to CV during applications or contacting ex managers when you’re actually asked for a referral? Sorry for the questions, trying to figure corporate life from the scratch
mock interviews is like practicing your interview skills by having a friend or stranger "interview" you. Theres websites out there where u can mock interview with strangers. referrals is someone recommending you for a job and telling the hiring manager that youre a good fit for it. @@AnastasiaBeware
@@AnastasiaBewareMock interviews are interviews that simulate real industry interviews. You get interviewed by people for real lengths of time with real questions to see how you will perform. Referrals in this context mean getting someone to recommend you for an open position at their company. Usually, companies will reward a current employee with a bonus/extra money if the person they refer gets hired.
Hey, it’s very important to take your time. It’s okay to take your mind off your career. This happened to me before. Took 6 months of rest, just being unemployed, binge watching movies, travel, spending time my family, dogs, etc. Helped me a lot to bounce back even better in my career and got a job that pays 3x than my previous and has waaay better working conditions.
After the corporate massive layoffs, I have defaulted on debts, my savings are lying waste to inflation and my portfolio losing gains everyday. Impressive Joe Robert! having a great savings and more streams to earn makes life goal’s easier, I make most stock purchases when the market is in a confirmed uptrend or cheap cost, although most stocks I bought months ago which showed strong signs of doing well has greatly underperformed. It’s okay for me on the long run, however it’s a good time to add to existing holdings at follow -on opportunities.
Protect yourself against your job, Run a side business or contribute to an open earning project streamline that is unrelated to your day job, that way you develop an independent skill against layoffs.
I’m intrigued Joe, would you be comfortable sharing your system? I’ve been a victim of all my trades going sideways.. that said, I just want to model out what success looks like while also improving.
Went from being a veteran to, software engineering for 10 years, just got into law enforcement and hoping to become one of the good police officers out there to help people. It's okay to crush your own ego and be reborn into a new person. It is the cycle of having a healthy life by inviting change.

Ok, to anyone in their 20’s watching this, DO NOT QUIT your job without something else lined up unless you have a trust fund. The tech job market, ESPECIALLY for data scientists, is BRUTAL right now and it will easily take 6-12 months to find another job. And in NYC, your savings will drain FAST.
As an experienced older person, I took a huge pay cut to do something I still love but in a different way. No regrets. Frankly, I applaud you for taking this bold step. I wish you all the best in this journey.
Taking that leap to quit a job is huge. Shows you've got guts to chase what really matters to you, not just a fancy title. It's a solid reminder for all of us feeling a bit stuck that it's totally cool to switch tracks if it means being happier. I've always believed it's not just about climbing up but finding the right wall to climb. Your story is super inspiring for anyone wondering if they should make a jump to something new. Love how you're going after what you want - it's super motivating to see someone go for it. 加油加油!
hey julia, i went through something very similar in the past and also quit with nothing lined up.. and honestly, looking back, it was one of the best decisions i've ever made for myself
Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future.., I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life!!
I agree with you and I believe that the secret to financial stability is having the right investment ideas to enable you earn more money, I don’t know who agrees with me but either way I recommend either real estate or bitcoin and stocks.
I invested 5k in Robin hood about a year ago and it steadily went down, now my portfolio is down to $800. I don't know what to do and i am in between jobs
@@face2lune Understanding your financial needs and making effective decisions is very essential. If I could advise you, you should seek the help of a financial advisor. For the record, working with one has been the best for my finances.
I’m Glad i stumbled on this. Please, if its not too much of a hassle for you, can you drop the details of the expertise that assisted you and how to get in touch….
I think it's good that our generation are thinking more and more about fulfilment in life and not just going along with the mindset of keep hustling and you will be happy. It's not that you won't have to work hard or their won't be ups and downs. More so that you recognise when those downs are and trying to improve them, rather than 'sticking it out' and just brute forcing a miserable situation until you (hopefully) see the light at the end of the tunnel. Wishing you all the best in this new chapter! Regardless of what people say, just know that you are the only person that will live your life so make the most of it.💕
Elder millennial here. This might be a surprise, but every generation wanted fulfillment and to change the world. We had big dreams too. So did those before us. Enjoy this time of unbridled optimism. Try to leverage it into something good for yourself. It's tough out there.
Yeah..and I think previous generations cannot afford to lose what they currently have...especially when they have kids and family to feed. Younger generations are now starting family later that the older ones.
I too quit my job without a backup plan for the same reasons as yours. I learned that this is a blessing in disguise. Trust the process! You will be alright at the end!!
My husband went though a similar situation as yours in the tech world and also got insomnia because of crazy hours. He is now doing something completely different. Fyi I watch you for YOU, as a person , as Julia. Not because you were working as a data scientist. Look forward to seeing what you do next and thanks for bringing us along the way! You are so brave for tackling the unknown with such honesty and grace.
What is he doing instead? As a previous employee in biotech company in Shanghai, China, I have same situation as Julia and your husband. I was confused what I'm gonna do for living now, if I jump into a new area, what area I could choose?
This video came at the exact right time for me. I got laid off, no back up plans, my cat died, I also felt burn out at work and looking forward to change my career. When I was thinking to start something new, before I was ready, I got this layoff call from my boss. I totally agree on this "take 1 step back to make 2 steps forward", sometimes the universe would just push us so we can take the leap.
i also got laid off the same week my cat passed away. still looking for my next job, but it put a lot into perspective for me. i realized i wasn't super passionate about the work i was doing anyway. the important things in life have become clearer to me now.
'sometimes the universe would just push us so we can take the leap.' -> So true. When the universe pushed me to take the leap, always the door to the better opportunity has opened for me.
You've got such a measured take on your situation and life. It's sad how the reality of dream tech jobs often falls short... Burnout (and now, unfortunately layoffs) is common in this industry. I'm amazed you're immediately going back to the job search. Years ago, I too quit my job at the peak of burnout, and I can say it was one of the best decisions I made. Life is indeed short, but also long... Do take some time to enjoy funemployment too (it's also a luxury to have both savings + free time as an adult without worrying about career responsibilities)... take care! It sounds like you're confident about the next steps ahead, and I think you'll go far 💖
hi Julia! I haven't commented before, but I've been watching for a few years and just wanted to let you know I also just recently quit my job as a DS after 3.5 yrs (and also without something lined up). this video feels so validating and I wanted to let you know that you're not alone!!
priorities arent straoght ml job demand is on crackill be surprised if you find another ml job ; op demonstrates more narcissism than ml skills and mosts racists would punch her face than applaud her for skills
Im so glad I clicked on this video. I just quit my job today and doing so, caused quite the anxiety and some doubts. Hearing your experience is very validating in knowing that we dont have to keep running in this rat race when our health and happiness is on the line. This grind mentality of society is very harmful and unhealthy. It’s very much okay to step back and reassess. I think the more that we can let go of things that clearly arent for us, the more we are able to be open to what is. With that, I salute you as well for being kind to yourself as you try to navigate this new chapter in your life. Your mindset is very positive and I hope that continues! I think with major changes in life like this, faith in ourselves and in our journey is extremely crucial as well. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Best of luck with everything!
Life is very short no matter what age you are. I loved my prior employer and since having to depart has been the best decision of life ❤ congratulations to you on choosing YOU!
@@juliafei indeed lovely Grand greatness and many blessings will come to you… you’re mind is brilliant and it has absolutely nothing to do with your career path❤️ continue to discover you and we are here for it!!
Life is all about finding what makes your "heart, mind, and soul" happy - I have sacrificed higher positions (which come with more $$, more work, more stress, less work-life balance, and politics) ...and I have never regretted it.
you go, girl. so proud of you. i recently quit a finance job as well because it was draining me beyond compare. crazy to think that I had worked on something for years - knowing i hated it. rooting for you the whole way and loved your thoughts on this. thinking of similar things!
I love the part where you shared learning about your Grandfather through his passing. How beautiful to learn about him through all the people who loved him. Your perspective on embracing this change is admirable
Girl I'm so happy for you! You're very brave, congratulations for thinking of yourself above work. I also quit a job that paid me well but ruined my mental health and I was so relieved and happy! There is no money in the world that can compensate for our health. Don't feel guilty or worried. Things happen at the right time, God knows what He is doing so trust Him and better things will come! I am in my 40's and stumbled upon this video, I so admire your courage and how you prioritize your mental health! You go girl and I wish you land something that makes you happy and fulfilled very soon. A job is a job and nothing more, you absolutely did the right thing!
You're so brave! I also quitted my job in Korea last year and moved to a different country to be with my partner. It was really hard for me being a student again, learning other language and culture, always feeling like I lost my career & money😂 But I knew the problem was.. I was not happy at all when I had a career even tho it had a good title to others. Now I'm focusing on important values in my life and figuring out what I should study to have a better / happier position next time. Through your video, I've learned the fact our life is long and we're working for ourselves, not to show other people! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I support you a lot❤
I left my first job out of college as a programmer after 3 months due to the poor work culture. I didn’t have a job lined up and it was scary at first, but I left work that day feeling happier and more relieved than any other day I had been there. One thing I’ll suggest, be sure to network as much as possible during this time. It’s much easier to land a good job if you know who you’ll be working with.
Hi Julia! I have never commented on your channel before but I wanted to tell you that you have all our support in whatever you decide to do and I wish you the very best of luck in finding your next dream job! I have experienced a similar situation before and was feeling extremely stressed and burnt out in my previous job. I was working long hours and I felt like I was not going up the career ladder as I hoped. I felt sad and stuck almost every day... I spent a few months job searching and although it could get disappointing at times, I have learnt a lot about myself and understanding what I truly aspire to in life. I ended up finding my current job and I am so grateful to have landed in this position. Like you said, there will be highs and lows in our lives, but trust the process and I am sure the next high of your life is waiting for you! Good luck!!
TH-cam either recommends me videos of people working 3 jobs that they hate while recording in their car or people quiting their 6 figure jobs because they don't like it.
Thank you for being honest Julia, with everything. Being vulnerable in front of strangers is such a hard thing to do. I'm also in NYC looking for another job in the tech space while being unemployed and you are not lying when you said things are bad. It definitely is..but I'll take some nuggets from this video and be positive about time and emotional freedom we've now gained. Thanks again for sharing
+1000 respect for this girl. There are too many things in the video that very few can dare to show/talk about. Thank you for being you, facing reality and show that in the most honest way to us! Fighting and love you!
I can't express how grateful I am for you sharing your experience and insights. I am also going through turmoil in feeling dissatisfaction with my career and just hearing you so eloquently and honestly talking about this is so helpful and encouraging!
This is brave and absolutely the right thing. I am 42 and you are so right about life's trajectory. You got THE job really early in life where most people in their 20s are figuring things out for years and years. You will have many paths and many jobs and that skill set will always be there for you. No job is worth sacrificing your mental health and personal life. You are smart and young and will do so many amazing things. Good for you for figuring out your priorities. I wish I'd done so that early on.
Crazy this popped up while I’m thinking about pursuing DA/ DS/ DE but to be completely honest it’s just about the paycheck. I know that’s shallow. Yet hearing your story gives me actual pause and also seeing your presence as a content creator builds my courage to do the same. Hope you find whatever makes you happy and good luck on your journey :)
i may have first clicked on a video of yours because you were at data scientist at spotify and i just so happened to be interested in data science at the time, but i subscribed because of the warmth that shines through in your videos through conversations you have with your friends and family, the introspective thoughts and emotions you're feeling that you're so graciously willing to share with us, and your courage to be vulnerable about topics that are difficult to talk about and discuss (let alone with people you haven't met before). you are infinitely more interesting than whatever occupation you could possibly have; a job's like a hat you wear for a season, and it's simply time to wear a different one as you transition into the next. you are doing so well, and i have no doubt exciting things await you in this next chapter in your life. thank you for your courage.
Hey, Julia, I can feel you deeply since I was in the same position back in the COVID season, I lost my beloved grandma while struggling with long working hours with rare visibility. The best I have done is to come back hometown, gather with my family, and coincidentally meet my fiancee, and finally land my dream job as well!! So when you are uncertain about where your life is going, just take a deep breath, and life will guide you instead as long as you never lose the confidence of life!
I feel like everyone is entering this new unknown era and your vulnerability to share is something to be proud of! I can't wait to support and be along for the journey
I have subscribed at the point at which you have left your job and are bravely moving forward into an exciting future! So there are lots of us out there to pick up on your very cool status and cheer you on!! You are doing the right thing.
Hey Julia, thanks for sharing your journey. I also recently quit my first job without anything lined up. The feelings of constant stress/fears/uncertainties from a job and working hard/late but not moving anywhere career progression-wise really make me feel seen. Staying true to yourself in this economy is hard, and betting on yourself takes a lot of courage, confidence, and self-reassurance. You are brave and smart. Wherever you go, you will make a great asset to the team. Rooting for you! :)
thanks for posting such a video. I also went through the same thing last year as a web developer. Went through 2 months and a half of unpaid holidays to take care of myself, bear with the job for 6 more months and then felt shit again and the company betrayed me by verbally accepting me going on holiday and firing me while I was on holiday. I can not describe how tough it was to go through so many unending interviews and being rejected but finally I found a new job and it's going to start soon. Believe in the process and never give up. Keep going Julia!💪🏻
Julia, your maturity amazes and inspires me. I wish I were even half as courageous as you when I was your age. You are a brilliant, young woman with great work ethics and any company would be lucky to have you. I look forward to watching you kick ass this year. You go, girl!
Stumbled upon your vid. I was there too. I quit my first job where I had been working over 3yrs, with no backup plans as similar reason as you. I remember I was so fearful and happy at the same time. Looking back now, I can definately say that was the best decision ever. I wish I had more courage to decide it more sooner. I am sure you’ll be thankful to yourself later for making this brave decision to prioritize yourself.
I found your channel back in 2021 just as I was getting into tech (and got my first job as a data analyst) and I’ve followed along ever since. You’ve helped a lot not just career-wise but just with navigating through life in general. We’re close in age and it always seemed like your videos came in at just the right point to kind of give me some respite and support in my own life and I think a lot of that is due to how transparent and honest you’ve always been in your videos. You don’t churn these out but instead have always given an insight into where you’re currently at, which I think is very brave of you. Best of luck moving forward. Remember: You’re supposed to step out of your comfort zone, which oddly enough I think is something you’ve always conveyed.
Sorry to hear about your grandpa passing.. I hope you're doing ok mentally and physically❤ I can't imagine what you went through especially losing a loved one while also feeling burnt out at your previous work. Wishing this year to be filled with new opportunities and good memories for you
This video was randomly recommended to me and I’m glad that it was! Thank you for being so open and vulnerable - leaving the grind during a buyer’s (employer’s) market is a testament to how tough it must have been in the last year for you. I hope you take time off to heal and find your new adventure with renewed spirits. Best of luck!
Never accept working more than the set hours you get paid for, max 40 hours a week! Ps. I took a huge pay cut to go from data scientist to data analyst, not having to work overtime and in stress: best decision ever.
Congratulations. Leaving a job without one lined up can be scary. But you have the personality. The knowledge and the desire. You will go far. I wish you the best. And I look forward to your videos. Especially when you’re in China. I’m not a sub to your channel because of your 9 to 5 job, I’m here because of you. You feel like my Internet daughter. Blessings, young lady.
I'm excited for your next era and please enjoy this "in-between eras" too! You're strong, girl, never forget that! Sending lots of love and strength~ 💕
Julia, years ago I quit my job too!! I quit my job to start my own business. Working for corporate was great, the people were wonderful! the pay was great! People there loved me! The one negative I dreaded everyday was watching the right lower part of the screen with the clock tick. I would always think about the opportunities I'm missing out on. The business I could be cashing in on. I wish you much success with your future. My one advice to you is this. NEVER GIVE UP ON your dreams!! Keep trying, failure is never failure if you learned from it!! You are going to meet alot of wonderful people along your journey.
We are here for you. Praying for you to find the right job for your next season in life. Many people need to hear your journey as there’s so much truth and growth in it.
Thank you for sharing with us this part of your life. You could've just stayed quiet and we wouldn't know. But you choose to share it and that made us (at least I do) feel like you trust us as friends :) Looking forward to the life you'll live again!
I commented on your IG that i was so proud of you and I want to repeat that here but ALSO I don't watch your videos because of your job. Maybe that was how it started but now I watch you for YOU. Your videos are a comfort to so many and I cannot wait to see where your journey takes you!!
Your response was very real and it just really resonated with what I am going through at this stage of my own life. Your authenticity is truly admired and nothing sugar coated which is why I've decided to give you a sub all the way from a small northern California town (209 area code). I look forward to seeing more of your updates and as always stay true to yourself!
It's crazy how we're all going through the same feelings because I've been feeling this about my job lately. I hope you'll get lots of rest and that something amazing will line up for you in this next season.
Good luck to you! It’s wonderful to see somebody focusing on their mental health and being able to recognize when it’s time to let something go.. Good luck and I wish you all the best in your job search.
Good management does their best to prevent employees from getting burnt out. As an employee, you're also the owner of your mental health, and work/life balance. Learn to push back, negotiate, and advocate for your rights at work; with the understanding that if you burn out and will not be able to work for them, the company will also be at loss as they would need to hire/onboard/train a replacement.
Wow so proud of you for making the best decision for you. Excited to see where you go from here, really some great reminders in this vid 💪🏼 you got this girl
Listen: Julia, take it from someone who knows - never let what you do become who you are. I learned this truth the hard way. I once let a demanding job consume my time and, before long, my life until I crashed down in a way that I never anticipated. Years later, I am not sure that I ever really recovered from what I allowed to happen and I wish that I had had the perspective YOU have now. Hi Julia, wishing you all the best in your new life chapter. Only you can know what is best for you. I followed you at first for the tea on working in tech but stayed for your endearing personality and relatibility. Excited for all the new things to come! ❤
I am one of those individuals who subscribed to you right after watching this particular video, and the reaosn being that you are here sharing with us your genuine state, the state that most of us are currently going through, and in turn, you are helping us feel normal. Instead of sugarcoating your day to day life as a data scientist, you were real in this video, and I respect it fully. Thank you.
All the best Julia, I can so relate with your situation. I also dropped my resignation and next week is my last week so I can focus on job search fully. All the best and thank you for always keeping it real ❤️
Julia I went through something like this but in January I was laid off . Which was hard but at the same time after 2 weeks I realized how freeing it was especially since I knew that I had put my life on hold for “stability “ whatever that means. Well I am proud to say God has allowed me to walk in where I should have been. Yes it’s a process but I am thankful Anyway good for you and thank you for sharing ❤
All these influencers quiting dream jobs. Makes me wonder, should I strive to be an influencer instead of a Data Scientist myself? Just like everybody?
These comments were more insightful and thoughtful than I was expecting. Best of luck to you and sorry for the loss of your grandfather. He sounds like a great, influential man.
This video was recommended to out of no where and felt the need to comment. I'm currently working as a data scientist in NYC and everything you said resonates so deeply with me. The main difference is I recognize I'm burnt out or very close to it, but I'm living/working through it by ignoring it. Absolute major props to you for having the courage to take on this life-changing risk to better your overall mental and physical health. I pray that one day, I find similar strength, but right now, I'll be at work tomorrow 8am sharp.
Congratulations! You've made the best decision of your life. I work 12 hour days where I work because they don't have 8 hour shifts. Only HR or corporate jobs might have that base (we all know it's NOT just 9 to 5 anymore). Sadly for me it's not the hours that are stressful. It's certain people I have to work or deal with that stresses me out. Quitting is not an option for me because the company is paying for my college. I'm saying all of this because I also had a mental breakdown for the first time in my life because of one employee. And it's not the way they treated me, it's not a boss, just a co worker, but the aura or vibes she gave off at one point broke me. We've now been separated thanks to management. And we'll never work together again, because of other reasons. My point is I sympathize with you and completely support your decision.
I’d love to quit my job, but I can’t because it pays the bills. Most days I hate it. It isn’t that I hate the work. I actually like my job, but there’s one person I particular that I HATE to work with. Drama queen and just makes work horrible. I wish I could get away from that person, but for now I’m stuck. I really just try to ignore and avoid, but it’s really hard when we are in the same department. Only 10 years left. I hope she quits before then. Lol
It sounds like you tried your best to do everything the “right way” and you ultimately had to do what was best for you! I RELATE SO HARD. You’re truly not alone in this
Gurl, I feel you. I had been in a situation where I kept taking and taking and accepting and more but, I didn't know that I was dying inside. I learned that I had to say No on many things and understand that I am human and I have hours that I only have to work on. I am happy that you are finally free. Hope you take the break you need and also get back up again soon. :)
Maybe it’s because I’m a bit older than probably the average viewer but… what exactly were you guys expecting the manager to say? I see many comments that say they seemed “cold”, but like they aren’t friends what should the response sound like ? Curious.
I'm sorry about your Grandfather, I'm sorry you lost him too soon. Talk to him, he's there for you. I'm 73, and I KNOW what it feels like to know you are not happy where you are. I remember at one job, it was so wrong for me that I decided to quit because I would rather starve happy than do that job another day. Try not to compare your self to anyone, or live up to anyone else's expectation. No one knows your soul better than you. Find your smile and I wish you contentment.
I love how 5 years ago, software engineers were complaining about burnouts and quitting. And now it’s data scientists. I guess it’s all same everywhere except you put on a different hat.
This is such a brave move in life and thank you for sharing. You are very fortunate to have time to step out of your old path and to regroup! Good luck!! It is so amazing that your grandpa continues to guide you and is still with you.
girl you quit your job with no backup plan. no other job lined up….. it’s not about how you feel. it’s about getting the bag so you can sustain your lifestyle….fuck that mental health shit honestly. now you have no job
I lost my grandma around the time I left my last job. Her passing gave me new perspectives and courage to pursue a better opportunity that meets my renewed priorities and life goals. I still work hard trying to make her proud but I know she is watching over me and just wants me to be happy. I’m rooting for you and I know something better is out there waiting for you.
I’m in medicine and I was in a pediatric residency and about to finish until: 1. My body and mind broke: - lost my appetite and stopped eating subconsciously - started to get brain fog, loss of concentration, not able to think clearly, would have to reread things multiple times. - severe weight loss of 20 lbs in 1 month. - crying on demand, emotional lability. - just not able to think. - would spend multiple hours just starting at spaces and wall. - constant and unending worry. This all could have taken my life. So I was forced to resign. My family’s Asian and thy don’t believe in mental health so that was *very reassuring*. Next: I landed a research job with an Indian guy who was a narcissistic psychopath and sadist and bullied and harrassed me and verbally abused me everyday until he made my anxiety so worse that I was forced to quit. So basically the world we live in is a complete mess.
To be the contrarian, it was a bad decision. Now you’ve lost your income stream without a next step or backup. Couldn’t you asked to do less work? That would’ve bought you some time. Also you put your old team/project in a bind to replace you with only 2 or so weeks. I’m sure things will work out for you in the end, just pointing out that you could’ve built a better plan that would’ve worked out even better. Good luck to you, burn out is real and definitely tough to get through as most tech workers know.

This is my first dive into your videos, and I'm honestly so impressed by your courage! It's tough feeling trapped in a job with no room for growth, especially when it starts to take a toll on you mentally and physically. But remember, you're not on your own in this. I'm confident you'll find an amazing position that suits you-just hang in there and stay positive!
is quiting a real job some kind of a thing for your generation? it's nothing to brag about. but I guess you needed to drama up your story for youtube content. that's what you "influencers" do these days right? looking to become an overnight youtube sensation and live an easy life.
@Julia; you are my new hero! I'm a 56 (57 in about 7d) ex RN (PICU and ED) for 12yrs, currently falling back on my construction background (90's to 2004) as an Electrician, learning everything I can about AI/ML, in an effort to rebrand once more as an automation engineer/data/python code monkey? Love your attitude, as a 20s you know many of your peers would not understand happiness and fulfillment === Privilege, and not a birth rite. I'm not here to claim I've figured anything out, quite the opposite, the only pearl I can share is recognizing your wisdom is way beyond your years. You've been blessed with much more than just privilege! Cheers from lovely SoCal! ron:)
You're so mature, articulate and clearly bright! I'm sure you'll find your passion and a career that suits you. I'm sorry the job took such a toll on you mentally and physically. Working corporate is crazy tough and so draining. I think these types of jobs, the executives forget that people are not robots/machines and need healthy work life balance. It's crazy how they think anyone can work 12-14 hour shifts and not get burnt out. On the other hand they likely don't care and I'm glad that you realized what it was doing to you and put yourself first. Sometimes we have to take care of ourselves first and let everything else fall into place to just reset and recharge. You'll be just fine!
Much respect for your maturity for your age, Julia. I'm a fellow Data Scientist, happy to connect on LI and help you any way I can to land your next dream job. Always follow your heart. Justin
Definitely take the time to figure out what you really want to do. You don't want to end up right back in the same situation, just at a different company. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
When you said "Life is short, but also, life is long" and spoke about your grandfather's storied life, including how others met him at all sorts of points along his journey, I almost teared up. I met my own grandfather recently on a trip and had it in the back of my mind that the meeting very well could be the last. It's so wonderful you were able to connect to the community of his friends during your break, however sad the circumstances of that may have been. It's in times like these that the complexity of the universe stuns one into re-imagining everything. Thanks for sharing what that experience meant to you.
I am literally also so much grateful to you, may you live a happy and a life of fulfilment, my best wishes are with you. i will always learn from you. thanks ❤️

My favorite quote comes from Joseph Campbell, “You have to get rid of the life you’ve planned in order to have the life that is waiting for you.”

You're comment made my day :) thank you!
Thank you for this comment. You are very wise!

Usually, companies will reward a current employee with a bonus/extra money if the person they refer gets hired.

you go, girl. so proud of you. i recently quit a finance job as well because it was draining me beyond compare. crazy to think that I had worked on something for years - knowing i hated it.
rooting for you the whole way and loved your thoughts on this. thinking of similar things!
You're capable of whatever you want and we at TH-cam are here to support you =)❤
I am in my 40's and stumbled upon this video, I so admire your courage and how you prioritize your mental health!
I’m so proud of you for putting your health and well being before your career you got my support and I look forward your new journey.
this is huge girl! been following your journey for a while and I loved to see your growth.
I'm on the same page as you
Thank you for being honest Julia, with everything.
When one door closes another opens! It's important to switch things up and try new things. This is honestly so inspiring!!
What was the actual pay cut amount? just curious
Sending lots of love and strength~ 💕
i've never clicked a notification so fast
Me too!
Wishing when the day will come 😅
Same
same hahaha
Same 😂
Julia, years ago I quit my job too!!
I look forward to seeing more of your updates and as always stay true to yourself!
as someone working in big tech in NYC i totally feel you! proud of you for taking this risk, it will pay off🤗
It's crazy how we're all going through the same feelings because I've been feeling this about my job lately.
Sleep late, read a lot, go to movies in the afternoon, take naps, go for walks without a destination in mind, eat good food - rediscover your own pace and needs and wants. Sending much affection...
Yes it’s a process but I am thankful
Anyway good for you and thank you for sharing ❤
Good luck Julia! We were classmates in college and you were cool, so I’ll reach out soon and maybe we’ll end up being colleagues again :)
You are amazing for speaking up about your experience. I'm sure you will find your next big thing soon enough. ❤
Lol
😂 Good luck!
Don’t let one person hold u down , just laugh at them and move on people can be miserable don’t let it affect you
I love your insights in this video. It’s a very important part of your life journey and it’s a blessing that you’ve had these revelations so young. ❤
0:13 lmao the censor
I’m in medicine and I was in a pediatric residency and about to finish until:
1. My body and mind broke:
- lost my appetite and stopped eating subconsciously
- started to get brain fog, loss of concentration, not able to think clearly, would have to reread things multiple times.
She does TH-cam. Based on the views for this video she can make plenty of money.
@@natalieh8023 Doubtful TH-cam revenue is comparable to Data Scientist pay. But better yet, continue Data Scientist role in a reduced capacity, do TH-cam, and look for the next gig!
You did the right thing. Health over wealth. Time to regroup. In your field, you’ll be able to find another job. You won’t have to flip burgers.
no offense but all im getting in my feed recently is asian women in tech quitting and “finding themselves”. i have no idea what spurred this
We are in the matrix
Just kidding 😂
Cheers from lovely SoCal!
ron:)
Tech is just not for everyone. You fell for the hype of making easy money without putting in the long hours. I do not get it with some people. smh
You'll be just fine!
that is actually so beautiful, to find clarity from such a dark time and letting go. you have so much potential good luck girl
