Who are Sikkimese and why is the Sikkimese society so divided? | Karma Conversations | EP 04

  • In a huge development, the Supreme Court on Wednesday removed the observations from its judgment that described Sikkimese-Nepalese persons as “people of foreign origin”. The fine print in the observations attached with the Supreme Court’s January 13 verdict over tax laws had caused a furore in Sikkim following a controversial portion authored by Justice Nagarathna.
But what was at the core of the issue of the conflict? Was it driven by years of neglect instigated by political interests? Was the history of Sikkim disregarded? What kept the people from uniting? Who are Sikkimese? Why is the Sikkimese society so divided?
To understand the issue better, EastMojo Editor-in-Chief Karma S Paljor spoke to Kharga Bahadur Rai, president of the Sikkim Republican Party.

It is unfortunate that the limbus (were known as tshong people in sikkim ), one of the indigenous people of sikkim are often labeled as outsiders along with other Nepalese and they don't enjoy the same status as the lepchas and bhutias. In fact limbus and lepchas are the indigenous to this region

tsong people rebelled against sikkim rule and created their short lived kingdom through advice of prithvi narayan shah brahmin advisors, tsong betrayed lepchas and bhutias harmony peace treaty. that why sikkim lost land westward till arun river. today dorjeling and karseong are also part of sikkim but nepali origin want to create gorkhaland and merge sikkim to nepal through gorkhaland. that is the agenda played here. original people have woken up.

Later when migrants come to Sikkim and marry your women child and sisters. Please allow them to settle in Sikkim like all Bhutias and Nepalis settled in Sikkim from elsewhere because history is just repeating itself. It's not a unique thing. All the same. I want to see nagas calling Sikkim their original homeland once they migrate to Sikkim in rallies and join the ranks of Sikkim natives. Because Sikkim identity is so fluid and boundary less that once look at history and you can tell it's always been that. Tibetans outsiders. Some come and go like the limbus. Their own history tells that.

Don't speak half baked things, it's better to keep quiet then spread rubbish misinformation. When has the Tsongs betrayed the Lepchas & Bhutias when their contribution in war is clearly seen in the Gorkha-Sikkimese war.
Also remember Tsong is a title given to Sikkmese Limboo not Limboo from other places.
Here are some facts for ignorant people like you.
The celebrated Sikkimese Rong(Lepcha )military leader (Commander of the Sikkimese Rong and Tsong(Limboo) forces) and statesman from the 1700s, Changzod Yugthing Chothup a.k.a. Kabi Changzod, Athing Poi and Satrajeet is lauded in the annals of Denjong Gyalrab (History of Sikkim) for having greatly distinguished himself as a Mag-pon (general / military leader) during the Sikkim-Gorkha empire wars of the 1770s and 1780s.
Changzod Yugthing Chothup was the most successful military commander in Sikkimese history. He was instrumental in the Sikkimese resistance to the Gorkha empire’s expansionist invasions into Limbuwan and Morang (then controlled by Sikkim) during the 1770s.

in 1981 cenus bhutia population was 33%( 10k out of 30k) which is now reduced to 10%, reserved seat of bhutia lepcha is being under constant attack of dilution by majority nepali (80% of population) and sikkim gov itself from chamling to golay. there are widespread propogand of ridiculing bhutia community identity of tribal and aboriginal of land and community like chettri-brhamin are in queu to get themesleves tribe status by concealing their real identity and history. abolition of kashmir special should be wake up call for sikkimese, article 372 F can survive as long as you are able to maintain original agreement of it. if you dilute it for your selfish benefit GoI will too dilute it with for its benefit, income tax exemption is one such example, slowly and steadily non sikkimese are taking over sikkim. if you dont want to end up like tripura, majority nepali popultion should stop driving the mainstream politics away from communal attack and foster greater trust among the 3 sikkimese commuity

Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram are like Japan and Korea. You are a citizen of that country or state only if you have it in your blood. Example: Mehgalahaya has 3 tribes; Garo, Khasi, Jaintia. You are a bonafide citizen of Meghalaya if you are of Garo, Khasi, or Jaintia blood. The rest of the people are outsiders even if you have been living in that state for 100+ years.

Tripura has 19 indigenous tribes but the whole country thinks of Tripura as a Bengali state. The majority of Tripura have migrated from Bengal, Bangladesh Sylhet, Silchar. The original tribes are reduced to minorities in their own state. This is the Tripura happening in Sikkim.

To all the hate comments against Nepalese, just remember, Sikkim became part of India with their terms and conditions ,hence, enjoy a lot of things unlike the rest Indians.
Besides, Nepali and Nepalese are generally peaceful and harmless people and hence time again they are facing incidents like NE and Bhutan. The day they too start fighting in the streets and roads along with the borders, no one vl be able to control.

Sikkim was a sovereign nation under the rule of a King. It's ridiculous how people are proudly saying, they wilfully wanted to merge the India. largely, Nepali immigrants duped by Indian RAW agents played a ominous role in destabilizing Sikkim and ultimately all paid the price. Kazi , a infamous figure is also known to have shaped the history of the Kingdom all for wrong reason. So we should get the facts straight instead of getting offended. Anyway, history aside, unity and open thinking is the only way forward. Simple logic , when Bengalis dominate the state nepalis doesn't like right? Skimm is also subjected to the same emotions once upon a time especially the loyal Bhutais ,limbus and Lepchas.
Also , today largely Nepali has become the majority and the language too almost their official language of Sikkim. Essentially the real citizen of Sikkim has been made minority in their own Kingdom. They have a their own language, their culture and tradition.
Well, now that Indian government has cleverly annexed Sikkim first , they are undertaking their second agenda. We won't be surprised if Bengalis become the majority in Sikkim some years down the line.
