One tip with the middle row seats, when they are slid forwards, you can slide them freely back and forth through the entire range of travel. So when you have them want, set the back upright and it will lock in place at that position. You still need to adjust the back recline but don't have the added step of also sliding it back further using the lever in the front of the seat.
Great video. Our Gen 2 R1S Dual Max was delivered with very poor hood alignment, we have a service appointment that I hope will resolve it. I think front tow hooks are only not included on the Dual Motor Standard battery trim, all others include them.
Awesome thank you! I just finally was able to actually see one of these in person at the new location in AZ. First impressions is that overall it feels very premium and worth the price. Teslas on the other hand were amazing when there wasn't much choice, but the interior and detail of them is more like a 30k car not 100k.
I’m one of your viewers that does care about the build quality. With that said - can Rivian fix all of these gaps if I document each one and give them measurements?
Gen 1 guy here. I noticed in the video. Not liking the location of the mesh pockets in the frunk on that Gen 2. Hard to get to. Also, our early 2024 Gen 1 had and still has build quality issues on the exterior. Some I asked Rivian to fix, others I wish I would have had them fix. Others, they told me they could not fix. Now it’s too late to address these. Our 23 MYLR build quality is exponentially better. Still love the R1S, but the quality should really be better for the price.
Would love to see what you would find on a new Land Rover Defender - when mine went to my local detailer for analysis/ rectification and clear gloss wrapping they were amazed to find only one tiny paint defect but…………… awful panel gaps and poor attachment of the exterior plastic trim pieces. This was last year in the UK. However problems that I had with detaching trim on my very early build 2020 Defender 110 had mostly been fixed on my 2023 90 but I still get rattling from the seal along the top of the windscreen above 60mph, seems that the rubber seal starts to detach above 60mph and taps on the roof panel……….. same as on my 2020 car!
$80K+ to me that's very disappointing to see great video mate i used to work in the paint shop at Toyota Australia till they shut down the factory in 2017 and find your videos eye opening to see how other brands do
Shouldn't we be using Silicone Lubricant Spray in the door handles??? I think that's the only appropriate lubricant to use, and it should be very effective.
Very useful, thanks for doing. If I were to buy one now I'd be really torn between a new R1T gen2 standard/large dual motor... that config with large and things like a powered cover come in at $79k. Right now I'm seeing on Rivians new pre owned listing a R1t gen 1 quad with 8k-9k miles about $67k. I still have a contract to get "grandfathered" into the $7500 tax credit I think on a new one, which could bring it down to $72k or so... but even then I'm still wondering if a new one and $9k miles is worth $5k+.
I have a really fine brush in my center console of my R1T to wipe off the dust on the wood trim. I'd never use a microfiber on it. I agree with all the issues you've pointed out though. I LOVE my R1T and am completely sold on Rivian and will get an R1S either Tri or Quad motor when my lease is up next December, but I had insane problems with my truck when it was delivered, the hood not fitting well, all the doors being misaligned, the plastic mouldings literally unclipping, gear tunnel doors not aligning and the internal plastic lining was unclipping on one side. The interior center channel cover on the dash has had 3 replacements because (according to them) the clips always break and they don't have a fix for it. The entire passenger side rattle with any music. This doesn't even include all the software issues, mechanical stuff, and the fact that my truck was delivered with the drivers side rear break fluid connecter being improperly installed which would cause the brake line to hit up and down on the underside of the truck AND, because the brake wasn't connected, I only had 3 working friction brakes. Did Rivian fix almost everything? Yeah, and they took care of me as an apology decently well but there are a ton of issues still. I tell people all the time when they ask about my truck that you're basically Beta testing a $100k car. It's a new company and they're working through things, but there will be issues and because it's a new company, the issues will be annoying and take longer to fix since there's no true dealer network.
When R2 comes out, that will have NACS, and they have said it will be in the "proper" Tesla port location. Hopefully they then change the R1T and R1S port locations when they get the NACS port. That front left port placement has always been a horrible spot.
Nailed it! I hate the squeaky interior door handle on my 2nd Gen R1S. So cheap feeling and very annoying since it happens every time you get into and out of the Rivian. Definitely reminds me of my EQS wood dashboard. Also annoying is that I hear the flashlight shake on the road. Definitely needs a tighter enclosure. Great quality review!!
To be honest, there are few glaring misses, but I disagree with you on the gravity of them. The trim below the roof and bottom of the panel space and charge port all be it cool, not durable. These are obviously the worst. Personally, I like the door handles and the wood grain.plus I like perforated seats for heating and cooling. Have kids teach them to be neat or seat covers. I'd buy a rivian over tesla just for space. Elon really needs a better 3 row option than the shoehorn X.
I'm owner of an R1s Gen 2 and the reviewer is spot on.....The exterior door handle mechanism is really bad. You have to really use it to experience how bad it actually is. It is kind of loose and unreliable. Every time you interact with the car you have to use the door handle. It's appalling how they messed it up so bad. In the video, it is not very apparent, but the interior plastics they were changed in Gen 2 are of very cheap quality. Especially the area near the interior door with the unlock button. If you own a Gen 1, then don't upgrade to Gen 2. You will regret it.
I understand in Gen 1 the interior plastics were painted and in Gen 2 they stopped painting and just used colored plastic to save on cost. That was one of my concerns. Still in a Gen1 until 2027. How are the seating surfaces in comparison with Gen 1? I heard they were cheaper more fake looking on one of Munro’s videos.
Aside from the lackluster suspension tuning / ride quality of the R1S the biggest miss still is that they default and basically force the Dual Motor models to be front wheel drive vehicles. They really need to make the Conserve Mode an option you can turn on and off. I constantly have to keep putting it in Snow Mode to force it to be all wheel drive. But every time it goes to sleep mode it defaults back to All Purpose which is basically Conserve Mode. It wears the front tires, is dangerous in slick conditions (only regen brakes the front tires), and causes bad torque steering.
@@himakanth009 Correct, that works as well. But, the issue still remains that it reverts back after the car goes to sleep after parking it. So you always have to keep changing the setting back.
The dual motor model uses all 4 when coming from a stop which is where the most aggressive tire wear occurs. When you are coasting down, then it switches to front motor unless you hit the accelerator. Totally fine setup in my eyes. Also, you are supposed to be rotating tires.
And it also fails to generate any worthy efficiency gains for the most part. I have quads and I’ve stopped using conserve altogether unless I’m a little tight between charging stops. You’d save more from keeping the heat off after preconditioning.
Dude, he literally started the video saying that there's a lot of nitpicking, and if you don't like it then it's not for you. There's no reason for you to make an idiotic comment, unless obviously you didn't pay attention.
The cubby in the back of the r1s is where the subwoofer goes on r1s with the premium audio upgrade. So this r1s has the standard audio package.

Rear hatch button is easy to find. It's directly under the V on the hatch.
What I find weird is Rivian clearly puts it off to the left to have a central camera, but the camera in the screen is actually off center 🙃
Great video. Our Gen 2 R1S Dual Max was delivered with very poor hood alignment, we have a service appointment that I hope will resolve it.
I think front tow hooks are only not included on the Dual Motor Standard battery trim, all others include them.
My Gen 1 hood was awful from the factory. The service center made it worse. I'm going to fix it myself.
This is a fantastic review. No one looks at this in such detail.

Ty for a nice video. I love my R1S, but love more the FSD drive on my Tesla's. Ty Please take care of yourself Colton.

It’s great for towing. Try charging at Tesla with a trailer 😂

Second and third row seats are only heated, not cooled.
100% on the doors. It’s like a limp handshake.
My Gen2 door handles squeak when the sun hits them.
If a quality control video is 53 minutes long you know it has tons of issues only had to watch the first 60 seconds to figure it out.
Really?
Yes, VERY. lol

Wow what an extremely crappy quality for such an expensive car
Why on earth haven’t you traded it already
Couldn’t watch much of this video. It gave my OCD ocd.
What do you mean?
If you don't like Nikpicking its not for you.... I was thinking... I like NickPicking ... LOL

I think if you put stability in "Reduced" mode, it will not go to conserve.

It does not take "a few minutes" to wake the R1S up.

I'm starting to like my Tesla built quality after watching this video. I guess Rivian increased prices and not quality
oh shit this guy only gave the rivian one thumb up
Sick of all these build quality meticulousness. As long as it's not a gaping issue, I don't care. It's a vehicle meant to be utilized.
Then don’t watch the videos 😂
I’d also call another panel contacting another panel when opening the door a serious issue. But to each their own
Visual stuff is one thing, but body panels rubbing when a door is opened is 100% unacceptable and quite frankly, embarrassing for Rivian.

All upcoming build quality vids will have this disclaimer moving forward 🫡
