@Gjeebs thanks man. I have a 2021 MYLR 7 seat. 140k on the clock. It's been amazing and the best vehicle I've ever owned. I've been looking at Rivian and the RT 1 specifically. I'm glad you made this video. Your videos are very informative. I'm thinking next year around July is when I'll be making a decision.
$109 that seems really high. A recent supercharger drive of 780 miles from VA to NJ and back with MYLR cost me about $85 dollars. I did charge at home before the trip and after arriving back home with about a 20% SOC. I think if I used superchargers for the initial charge and final charge it would have added another $60, my standard at home daily SOC limit is 50%. I use about 8-10% daily for commuting to work. An hour and a quarter charge at $109 just seems high to me. Is it because of higher rate charging at Tesla superchargers for non-Tesla vehicles? Love your humor! Thanks!
My question: how long do you typically drive in a day? I like to keep mine to 8 to 9 hours. Based on that, if that was me, driving an EV adds almost a full day to the trip.
We've had a lot of derating on the V3 superchargers this summer, to the point we default to other options unless they are terrible. It's definitely not as trouble free or quick to charge the R1T as a Model 3/Y, but it's otherwise so great!
Hey, love that opening music "What you gonna do with a drunken sailor". Goes well with your road trip back to Phoenix but skip the drunken part, please. Cheers.
It's probably the chargers, not the car. We took a long road trip in our Tesla MYLR and some of the charging speeds at Tesla Supercharging banks were abysmal in remote-ish locations.
It’s cool that the stuff I never have to / never want to think about with my car - how to get fuel and the ‘software experience’ - are apparently the most important things in this thing. Seems bad.
Help me out here Gjeebs says he drove 454 miles and charging cost $109.64, at 19 miles per gallon (what a Ford F150 get on the road) and $3.49 per gallon it would cost a gas truck $84 to cover the same distance. What am I doing wrong?

Not a current EV owner but am vigorously reviewing and considering an EV purchase: Rivian or Tesla model Y. Your single day charging cost seem steep but I assume if I owned a Ford F150 or large suv I’d be paying $50+ at the pump for a couple of stops on similar road trip. Do feel the majority of your savings would be via home charging when making local trips?
As for model Y or R1T, I’ve owned both (currently own the Rivian). Although the software, in my opinion, isn’t as polished as the Tesla software, I prefer the Rivian in almost every way over the model Y. The build quality seems much better (also significantly more expensive) in the Rivian. The Rivian range is a number you can actually believe. Although I never got stranded in my Tesla due to the inaccurate listed range. Primarily due to the vast Tesla network. But with the ability for Rivian to use most V3 and V4 Tesla charges combined with the Rivian’s greater range, I find traveling in either to be perfectly fine. I would say try to drive both and see which you prefer.
Yes road trips there are still savings but you lose time. 95% of my driving is around town and you save time because you charge at home ad money because it's cheap to charge at home
Keep in mind this is a truck without a tonneau cover, and he was going 80 in many parts of that video. Not a super efficient setup for an EV. And a similar sized truck probably gets in the 20-23 mpg range. Still tho, 19 cents per mile is freaking rough. That’s the equivalent of 3.80 per gallon for a 20 MPG truck. National average today is 3.3 per gallon regular. If that spikes up, then this starts to break even. Road tripping on public chargers are rough. Where EVs absolutely spank ICE cars is home charging, where some places can get into the 8 per kilowatt, and even at a crap efficiency of like 2 miles per KWh, that ends up being 4 cents per mile. Comparable truck would need to fill up at 80 cents a gallon to break even
@@jonmkohler Agreed on all your points. EVs are awesome for around town. In Arizona I’m at .11/kwh and could “fill up” a Tesla Model 3 for like $6. For road trips, I’ll keep a gas car around. The time and inconvenience just don’t make sense if it’s a frequent need to travel large distances.
Your 33mpg car is not directly comparable to a truck (which typically use about twice the amount of energy, gas or electric). In my experience, the cost of DCFC an EV on a long road trip is roughly equal to the cost of gasoline, for a similar-sized gasoline vehicle.
Some of those chargers are a ghost town unless you stop at 1 on a busy freeway on a Sunday and they are maxed out with 10 to 15 people in queue, waiting for a charge......
I never gave it much thought about the cost of charging while on the road until now. I am shocked at the costs, that is almost 100% increase over using premium fuel for the same miles. Guess the trade off is I would be charging at home using solar panels most of the time.
I was thinking the same thing. However, you’d have to determine what mileage a car that size would be getting. Also in the south gas is super cheap. If you’re in the north east or west the gas is double.
And don't forget that your time has value too. Your family and anyone else with you probably has time limits and constraints and also gives their time "value". On this trip he was basically "off-highway" getting fuel 1 hour for every 3 hours driven. A 30 hour trip took over 38 hours or an extra day. A extra day of vacation time has value to most people.
@@thomkutt1315 Rivian will break even with F-150 when price per kwh is 0.41c. (assuming price of gas to be 3$). F-150 is 20mpg. You can say that Rivian is faster, but who cares? You do not floor it all the time.
To be fair, a person needs to factor in the off/on highway portion of getting fuel. That is a 30 hour trip in a modern ICE based vehicle will all fuel stops and getting off/on the highway. Done it a few times in a variety of ICE based cars/trucks/vans. I live outside of Charlotte. I am guessing your trip took at least 38 hours (probably more). So roughly 75% of your time was "driving" and 25% of your time was off-highway getting to/from the station and actually re-fueling. That is what we tend to see either other EV's as well - roughly 1-hour off/on highway and refueling to every 3-hours of actual time moving towards your destination on the highway. A perfectly fine trip if you have an extra 8 hours (basically a day) for it.
If 30% of people live in Apartments or other locations where they can’t have home charging we will need 3 times the number of gas pumps for Chargers. Not less. Thats assuming 30 minutes to fill up at a DCFC which is pretty optimistic. That’s why Chargers need to be a lot faster - I.e add 300 miles of charge in 10 minutes.
EV are for people that have a charger (either at home or parking). If you do not have a charger where you live or work - it make no sense to have an EV. IMHO
So $109 for 450 miles. Hardly seems like a way to save money. I can fill up my HD diesel truck for that and get more miles and have 15 minutes of stop time. So while I’m am interested in EV the “fuel” savings” on the road doesn’t seem to be a plus.
I just bought a tesla and the auto drive is ok but FAR from worth paying for. I might occasionally use it if it were free but when my free trial ends next week it will be over until they make it more than a novelty. I'd use it if I were a Lyft driver.
42:46 There is a storm on the horizon. A time of hardship and pain. The battle has been won, but the war against machines rages on. Skynet's global network remains strong, but we will not quit, until all of it's destroyed.
I would purchase an R1T if South Carolina had a service center. I know mobile tech is an option but for anything that's would require a service center visit....ugh. Maybe one day the laws will change here on direct EV sales.

Depends on the truck. My Chevy 1500 with 3.0 duramax gets low 30s at 80-85. My 2500 duramax gets 18
11:46 700 miles and no pit stop is diabolical 😂
I don't know. I have the lightning and live in Chicago. It's like 30 to 40 at a public charger. A gas f150 lightning will cost over 100. Maybe 120.
@@LuisRamos84 Your right I was not doing an apple to apple comparison. I was using my current 28 mpg as comparison. With a much smaller BMW X1
@@thomkutt1315 Rivian will break even with F-150 when price per kwh is 0.41c. (assuming price of gas to be 3$). F-150 is 20mpg. You can say that Rivian is faster, but who cares? You do not floor it all the time.
41:30 ea terrible...
Did you try multiple superchargers at that troublesome location?
I tried 2 of them
20-30¢ per mile for fuel?
Seems like a lot....
Yep you're about right and I did mention that at the end. I agree it's about 25% longer on these cross country trips
@@Gjeebs Yep, I watched the whole thing to the end. Thank you for posting and sharing.
I would very much like the refreshed R1T long range.
Yea they are sweet
If 30% of people live in Apartments or other locations where they can’t have home charging we will need 3 times the number of gas pumps for Chargers. Not less. Thats assuming 30 minutes to fill up at a DCFC which is pretty optimistic. That’s why Chargers need to be a lot faster - I.e add 300 miles of charge in 10 minutes.
EV are for people that have a charger (either at home or parking). If you do not have a charger where you live or work - it make no sense to have an EV. IMHO
Is this a gen1 or gen2
@@mduncan1424 Gen 1
Regarding comments @34:40, you need to do a review of charging in California around California, or check out Out of Spec. It’s a huge problem here.
Yea I've seen that and it's weird because it's the state that pushes it the most
FSD is easy and awesome on highway lane changes …
So $109 for 450 miles. Hardly seems like a way to save money. I can fill up my HD diesel truck for that and get more miles and have 15 minutes of stop time. So while I’m am interested in EV the “fuel” savings” on the road doesn’t seem to be a plus.
Sexy buttons will do the lane change for you on Teslas or just get fsd
Never have had issues with my EV9 at EA chargers.
I like rivian but man, i can not come to my senses to financing a loan for $1200+ a month for 6 years. I got kids.
Yea I wouldn't do that either. Maybe buy one used. They are in the high 40's
I just bought a tesla and the auto drive is ok but FAR from worth paying for. I might occasionally use it if it were free but when my free trial ends next week it will be over until they make it more than a novelty. I'd use it if I were a Lyft driver.
Yea I think autopilot is more than enough
You can weigh any vehicle at a CAT scale. Just download the app.
Rivian might eventually go backrup
Tesla version four cabinets do not exist so the version four dispensers put out the same powers as version three
I prefer your style to Marquez B. Apparently he is having a KitKat.
What is a KitKat?

Seriously did you get thrown out of the house Ben? All that crap in the RiVN seems like you got moved out.
Yea I live in the truck now
Welcome to SC.
Only place where public charging needs to be as robust as gas is California.
Lol i be using the phone anyways. But i could us the map to at least understand where im at in the city. 😅😂🎉
42:46 There is a storm on the horizon. A time of hardship and pain. The battle has been won, but the war against machines rages on. Skynet's global network remains strong, but we will not quit, until all of it's destroyed.
Has built in Rivian air compressor. Uses portable. :D
The built in one almost exploded my front tire and the portable one is easier to use but I agree it does seem stupid
Just use microfiber cloth before pointing towards the screen… 😊
It is a nice truck......only 2 brands really make sense in the EV business...Rivian and Tesla.
They are the only 2 that really excite me
The v4 tesla cabinets have the magic dock built in and do not limit to 150 speeds. Btw im starting an Ev channel JGeebs and it's your fault
I'm not about saving the planet
It's all about saving my wallet from deflating.😊
It’s expensive compared with something like a Camry hybrid. I guess it’s ok if you are a very privileged kind of guy
I would purchase an R1T if South Carolina had a service center. I know mobile tech is an option but for anything that's would require a service center visit....ugh. Maybe one day the laws will change here on direct EV sales.
So stupid states have those laws. They are losing tax revenue!
Service appointments are 3 months out in my neck of the woods. Ridiculous.
Put a piece of Velcro on that flap 😂
