While I think the Rivian is a great achievement, I hope Rivian is able to reduce what is currently an unreasonable amount of disassembly required to perform minor repairs. Lack of reparability was a large factor in why I ended up cancelling my reservation for an R1T, and I recognize this not exclusive to Rivian.
Cool! Sorry to bother you with this question, but hopefully you can answer it: Most modern cars are 'connected' nowadays, not only EVs. Unfortunately, a lot of car manufacturers are (ab)using this ability to mine a lot of customer data and selling it to third parties (like advertisers and insurance companies). I really hope Rivian is not one of or will not become one of those manufacturers where their cars are basically smartphones on wheels when it comes to the privacy issues. These developments really hold me back in buying a modern car. What is Rivian's point of view regarding this?
@eximiamedia7897, could you please provide some insight into how much, if at all, the design team is working to make repairability easier than it currently is? I would love to buy an R3 someday but this level of teardown for basic repairs is a huge deterrent.

honestly refreshing to hear you comment about the registration fees in such a level-headed way. Too often people see fees and they don't see how they are vital to our society working properly.
I'm okay with paying my fair share. But here in Texas the fees they've hit us with are ridiculous. I have to pay an extra $200 a year above and beyond the regular registration. In order to have paid a similar amount of gas tax, I'd have to be driving a huge truck every day and putting tons of miles on it. I’ve had my R1T for 2 years and 27k miles, and I have also had an incredible experience, no major issues at all, and a ton of fun. My tires lasted a bit longer since they’re 21s, I got about 25k miles out of them before I had to replace them.
Pretty sure the heated area at the bottom of the windshield is do "defrost" the wipers, so that they dont freeze to the windshield during icy conditions, or to release them after an ice storm
That dirt collecting is now the new norm, time to add it to the every 5-10k miles task, if you want the best fuel efficiency, you gotta take the dirt collecting
Every aspect of this video makes me want a R1T that much more. All besides the windshield repair would be intriguing to see how much insurance would've charged had he made a claim. My f150 windshield was $200 to replace whike using my insurance to have it done & my rate did not change. Also love how realistic he is about the minimal if at all gas savings. As always appreciate the entertainment.
I absolutely love my R1T! Great drive, amazing top notch customer service that is surprisingly great even with weird little things. It has truly been a dream
This was a cool video and coo that Rivian let you film repairs you had done to yours. It was also neat to see part of your truck most people probably wouldn't get to see.
I'm glad there is someone like you putting these truck to the test. Especially with the cost of repair! Wow. Hopefully it can get more affordable, more reliable, and stay/be(?) non-intrusive on personal privacy.
I'm assuming you could take it anywhere for new tires and a rotation, but replacing the windshield was a bit of an eye opener. I've grown so used to a dude in a truck being able to come to the house or office and replace a windshield easily. The amount of disassembly required just to replace the glass is crazy.
I’m considering a 2025 R1S compared to say an armada or Tahoe or Land Cruiser 3 row SUV. I drive with my commute about 18-20k miles annually. Mostly will charge at home. The fuel savings is pretty substantial in my car I think as I would be in about $400 monthly on fuel costs. I like the 150k battery warranty and other warranty is still pretty solid.
My 1998 camry was quoted at over $1400 from toyota and safelite if I wanted OEM. Obviously, I got non OEM for ~350. From the dealer and OEM is always dumb expensive.
I'm seriously considering a Rivian R1T as my next vehicle. I've been driving my Tesla M3P for almost 2 years and 42K miles now and absolutely LOVE it! My wife is almost ready to upgrade from her Hyundai Veloster Turbo since we have another grandbaby on the way, so she can take over the Tesla, and I will replace my '07 Chevy Avalanche that I haven't driven in 4 months with a Rivian as my new daily. Once I sell the 4 ICE vehicles we currently own, we'll be all electric. I also have a decent size solar system and can also charge for no charge at work. This will be the natural next step!
Solid over-time review. Was thinking I'd have to keep in mind this is a "very early generation" R1T review with all of the early adopter problems and those issues and the evolution of design was addressed. Nice work.
Glad to see someone actually use their truck as a truck. Some of the design is over complicated. Now the price just needs to be affordable for the masses
No judgement but speaking as someone who, as a child, had three truckers holding his head and keeping him from blinking while they brought him to the eye washing station in the shop. You should always wear eye protection under a vehicle, personal opinion goggles.
I second this, eye protection is super critical for anything involving outside moving objects. Only takes once then boom you’re blind in one eye. Was in a car accident a while ago and a piece of flying glass cut up the corner/side of the frame, I almost always wear rated sunglasses now. Edit he did wear them for the second part so that’s good
Well finally, a Rivian review after some time and with it being used as a truck 👍 To me, this truck looks better in person than in photos or vids; can't explain why. My only 'beef' is the short bed which doesn't suit my needs. It sure makes the Cybertruck look silly 🤣
So you trade oil changes for tire rotations. So in my town/state, EVs are really not worth it, ends up costing me more (.32 per kWh electricity at home). Never mind that EV's are way more expensive than normal ICE cars/trucks. I really appreciate these videos, helps me decided my next ride.
I agree. Loved the video, but it shows me it is not for normal people with average budget if you are really thinking of save money and use the truck for work. There are really good proved cheaper options. I do like EVs, would love to have one someday, but currently it’s still a luxury. Spending that much time on the mechanic is a no no for me.
Good to see you still have the rivian Zac and it’s working out well I believe the rivian is is the only ev truck worth having and if I wanted an ev truck This would be the only one I would buy 👍👍🇦🇺
I’m gonna be pedantic That Guy and say at 6:50 that’s the >front< drive unit. Glad you’ve had a great experience with it! Cheers to the next 20k miles 🍻
Good luck to you, i live in Australia, i have been waiting for 3 years to buy a Rivian R1S, but in Australia we're forgotten from every one, i even send email to Rivian, but nothing happened. Just my time is running out. Good luck and enjoy your Rivian.
I love that most of your content is about the reparability of smartphones while you also drive one of the least reparable vehicles on the road at the moment.
It also has the least amount of parts that can break. There's a tesla out there right now with 400k miles on its original motor and battery pack. Electric is awesome. (Plus I've built my own EV so fixing it is well within my abilities should I need to. )
@@JerryRigEverything Not quite true, the parts might not be moving but an EV battery pack has a very high number of individual connected cells where each connection must be properly done. Further, each cell has internal structure and chemical composition of each layer that must be free of defect and of sufficient purity. Electrically they are simple.... Battery, control unit, motor. But when looked at in detail there are far, far more possible points of critical failures
If that is what it takes to replace the windshield it appears to me that would be something that needs a redesign. I would also like to see that complex charging port system replaced with a simple pop open design. Also the tailgate with the voild that will collect dirt and trash needs to be changed so falls out the bottom.
EVs have higher registration cost not only because of gas tax getting skipped but because per vehicle in class EVs are HEAVY and heavy vehicles tear up the road more.
@@davidhale9672 You're comparing a subcompact car to a full size pickup truck. The Bolt weighs about a thousand pounds more than other subcompacts like a Versa, Fit or Yaris
@@AlrienJYou are correct. My point is that there are millions of private vehicles on the road that weigh as much or more as EV’s. Now we are worried about the impact of heavy vehicles on road wear? It’s laughable.
@@davidhale9672 as OP stated ICE vehicles have to pay the gas tax which EVs don't. They also still have registration fees. Not to mention tire wear has been shown to be a massive source of microplastics in the environment. I don't see how EVs are being treated unfairly compared to ICE vehicles
You will go back to gas if you do any long trips. It gets very old quickly, electic is not ready for prime time with the current infrastructure. A hybrid gas/electric is generally a better option if available pure electric not so much.
Cars usually come with softer tires from the factory then the commercially available ones of the same model. So its very common for the tires that come with your car to wear out in about half the time others do.
hope the updated version is more serviceable, not like a while side has to come off to fix a back fender, also i think the heaters on the bottom of the windshield are there to heat the wipers, so the blades themselves wouldn't stay in place when its frozen over
Windshields have come a long way. I had two guys and a trunk replace my GT86's windshield and it took them like an hour. Changing the windshield on this truck is crazy.
11K miles in two years? I’m retired and drive 15K miles a year just going out to lunch, going to church, and various other activities. I guess miles in Utah are longer than in Minnesota.😅. Glad your R1T is working well for you. Unfortunately, it is still too expensive for the average person. Very interesting video on how to replace tires, tonneau cover and the windshield. Lots of complexity and some ingenious engineering.
Seeing all these parts just for 1 replacement part shows rivan has a long way to go. Bigger companies when through this, its just part and puzzle of a vehicle manufacturer. They will definitely improve their design moving forward.
wow, the price of the new glass makes me happy to live in Germany. if the glass can be repaired it is free of charge. if it has to be exchanged I pay 75€ as a quote that's it No matter how expensive the replacement is. That is part of car insurance I would never drive a day with a broken window.

The R2 will definitely be cheaper! But a used R1S isn't priced too bad either. (Compared to what else is out there) buying a new vehicle is usually a bad financial idea.... unless you make money with that vehicle.

That dirt collecting is now the new norm, time to add it to the every 5-10k miles task, if you want the best fuel efficiency, you gotta take the dirt collecting
Hey, My front Chevy Bolt tires last 11,250 miles. Had to replace the front axles and hubs at 38k. But I love the torque.
The disassembly to change the bed was insane. I would never buy something with that many control modules and wires absolutely everywhere
That $1800 windshield is crazy.
Must be a German on the glass engineering team.
It’s the same for most modern cars. All the electronics and required calibrations greatly increase the time and labor required.
I’ve had to replace the windshield in my 2019 civic twice now and it’s been around $1700 each time so you’re paying out the ass from economy to luxury
Just having rain sensor in windshield makes price go up like crazy. In this case it includes even more.
Thanks for the review. I'm glad to see the truck is holding up well. They should only get better with future improvements.
hi @the8bitguy! you are great!
Solid over-time review. Was thinking I'd have to keep in mind this is a "very early generation" R1T review with all of the early adopter problems and those issues and the evolution of design was addressed. Nice work.
Crazy how many cables and electronic components are packed behind literally every panel. Modern vehicles blow my mind.
And sometimes they blow the battery pack
Great video. It does remind us that even though electric doesn't require the same maintenance there is still going to be lots of work for mechanics.
I love how you blur your license plate, but have that massive billboard on the side of the truck for your dope wheelchairs..
Edit he did wear them for the second part so that’s good
Anesthesiologist here. Can confirm that ruptured globes from eye trauma are not uncommon and are always in the setting of no eye protection
Love it,you knew buying it there would be teething problems of the first gen and you would be doing this someday.
Jerry junior asking the right questions 💯💯
Good to see you still have the rivian Zac and it’s working out well
I believe the rivian is is the only ev truck worth having and if I wanted an ev truck
This would be the only one I would buy 👍👍🇦🇺
"I guess if we need three there's always the gear tunnel."
Ah yes the gear tunnel fits so many kids.
The children yearn for the mines
I’m gonna be pedantic That Guy and say at 6:50 that’s the >front< drive unit.
Glad you’ve had a great experience with it! Cheers to the next 20k miles 🍻
Hey I helped work on those service vans! I worked on the movable Jack mount arm in the back.
Good luck to you, i live in Australia, i have been waiting for 3 years to buy a Rivian R1S, but in Australia we're forgotten from every one, i even send email to Rivian, but nothing happened.
Just my time is running out.
Good luck and enjoy your Rivian.
I’ve liked the rivian since I saw Ewan McGregor use the pre production rivian on his adventure in the Long way up !!
Sure this is not a pickup, but my X5m50d has been a faithful companion for the past 3 years, best car ever...
Thank you for the video and after 10k miles on my dual motor performance, I came to the same conclusion as you. I love my R1T!
I love that most of your content is about the reparability of smartphones while you also drive one of the least reparable vehicles on the road at the moment.
It also has the least amount of parts that can break. There's a tesla out there right now with 400k miles on its original motor and battery pack. Electric is awesome. (Plus I've built my own EV so fixing it is well within my abilities should I need to. )
@@JerryRigEverythingelectric is very cool but an old gas powered car will run forever
@@imanoldurango8213 not without a lot of maintenance it won't. Nothing runs forever. Everything is subject to wear and degradation.
that's some serious offroading you done with the truck, the electronics are smothered in mud
If that is what it takes to replace the windshield it appears to me that would be something that needs a redesign. I would also like to see that complex charging port system replaced with a simple pop open design. Also the tailgate with the voild that will collect dirt and trash needs to be changed so falls out the bottom.
6:13, So you are telling me your windshield has a level of hardness at 6 with deeper grooves at level 7 similar to an iphone.😅
Makes sense now how my tailgate latches needed repairing after my PTC replacement. Thanks for the insight on that process.
That Tintic tunnel is awesome. If you ever want a shockingly excellent meal, hit up Cast Iron Bistro in Eureka!
Cool that Rivian allowed you to film them fixing your truck, good to have transparency with all this, no secrets to hide
EVs have higher registration cost not only because of gas tax getting skipped but because per vehicle in class EVs are HEAVY and heavy vehicles tear up the road more.
Heavy is good. Heavy is reliable.
My Bolt weighs a helluva lot less than all those F150s I see.
I don't see how EVs are being treated unfairly compared to ICE vehicles
thank u, as an rivian investor.
I live in ROK.
Welp...that's all I needed to hear. No cyber truck for me boys. Used R1t I'm coming for ya
Good call
termainej
You have skills, repair it yourself !
11:20 last time I saw him in a video he was just born, now he can walk and talk??
Time for a durability test? :D
hope the updated version is more serviceable, not like a while side has to come off to fix a back fender, also i think the heaters on the bottom of the windshield are there to heat the wipers, so the blades themselves wouldn't stay in place when its frozen over
Shout out to Jerry for posting channel level videos for subscribers
Let's gooooooo! Thank you for your support!
Its funny zack did not read it as sarcasm
Right? I was so surprised it has been 2 years already.
Windshields have come a long way. I had two guys and a trunk replace my GT86's windshield and it took them like an hour. Changing the windshield on this truck is crazy.
0:50 Those service van lights would make the Rivian look much better, instead of those Pez candy looking ones.
Yeah the amount of crap underneath everything was insane
I cant wait until Rivian come to New Zealand and then I cant wait until 5 years after that when I can get a second hand one.
wow, the price of the new glass makes me happy to live in Germany. if the glass can be repaired it is free of charge. if it has to be exchanged I pay 75€ as a quote that's it No matter how expensive the replacement is. That is part of car insurance
I would never drive a day with a broken window.
EV sales in Germany are down 30% from last year, probably wouldn't own this either.
I have a 96 bmw and constantly get hit by rocks but I’ve never once had one even chip the glass
I really do not know why I am not subscribed to your channel. Your videos are thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. Your projects are fun and informative. I guess now I have to subscribe. Thank you and keep up the good work.
AMAZING videos as usual
Rivian is an impressive company . I'm not a truck guy so I am waiting for the future Rivian's
Hello! I'm oo Cyber Cats Studios 😅
So happy to see one of my favorite creators working with one of my favorite brands. I bought my first Anker product like 5 years ago, and when it needed replaced the first time (due to general wear/travel) it was super easy to contact them and receive a replacement fast! Reading this comment back to myself, it may sound like a bot or sponsored comment lol; I honestly just love their stuff!
I used to like Anker products... until one of their USB-C chargers failed and started putting out over 30VC, destroying my laptop.
I reserved an R2 for when it comes out and intend to get it - should I wait for that or get an R1S now?
The R2 will definitely be cheaper! But a used R1S isn't priced too bad either. (Compared to what else is out there) buying a new vehicle is usually a bad financial idea.... unless you make money with that vehicle.
@@JerryRigEverythingI’d say that it’s all relative. Financing is certainly more palatable when it comes to new vehicles vs. interest rates on used ones.
Id go w/ the r1s tbh.
Im so excites for the R2, the R3X looks amazing too.
