I have an issue with my fuel gauge on my 96 Subaru. It only reads the first quarter tank then drops to E. Any suggestions on what it could be and how I can fix it?
I would be concerned with the fuel level float in tank that may not be seated correctly in the fuel pump assembly ( Sending Unit) or the arm is getting hung up during travel to full. When we get this kind of jobs in we will pull the fuel pump assemble out and test the function of the fuel level float by hand while the key is on but engine is not running! During the test if you find the fuel float arm is moving up and down freely as designed but the fuel gauge is still not reading then either you have fuel pump assembly issues, shorted wired heading back to the instrument cluster, or the instrument cluster is faulty. Most of the time we find its the fuel pump sending unit to be the cause where the brass connection pads and the float arm meet to be rubbed off or worn to the point there is no connection till fuel tank reaches 1/4 tank. In this case you see the brass pads look good till the point the fuel level gauge drops out. Replace the sending unit from a junk yard Suby, one that has been crashed either the front end or side impact. This way you have better chances finding a good replacement. Fuel pump sending units are spendy to buy at most auto parts store. /K&K
@@KNKRNR Woo hoo all done with repair Lol haha after issues and being tired from 430am wake up I've started it a couple of times before driving home about30 miles.. so did you have to remove the seat?
Yes but the bottom seat is easily removable.

When do you disconnect the negative battery cable
I would disconnect the ground right before you unplug the fuel pump sending unit to remove it from the tank.
