    Hi Carl.
    You're video's are very helpful.
I'm from the Netherlands and I bought the Sony dsc hx400v because I have cancer en can not handle my big cameras anymore.
But now I have a problem.
There is dust on the sensor and the store says is about 400 dollars to fix it.
Well I don't have 400 dollars to fix it or to buy a new camera.
Maybe you have an idea to solve the problem, that doesn't cost me that much.

    • @carlreader8939
      @carlreader8939  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Martin, Thanks for the kind words. I'm sorry for your illness and I wish you the best. I'm glad the hx400v fits your needs, and I don't understand how dust could have gotten on the sensor. The camera is sealed, so the problem might have come from the factory. If that is the case, it might be under warranty and Sony might fix it. If you contact Sony service and explain to them the situation and even complain a little that dust should not have gotten in the camera, they might fix it. It might be worth a try. Let be know how things work out, and get well. All the best. Carl

      Hi Carl.
      Thanks for the reply.
I already contacted Sony Netherland and told them exactly what you said.
They told me the same as my store.
Just throw it away and bey a new one.
And we can do nothing for you because it's out of warranty.
I also said that I used it not much because of the chemotherapy I had at that moment ,but they didn't react to that.
So I hung up the phone.

@@martinvanbakel3950 Sorry that didn't work. It might not be worth getting any more upset about it, but if you go on the web and contract Sony service by email, and complain strenuously, saying the camera must have been manufactured incorrectly to allow dust in, they might budge. It might be worth a try to put it in writing. All the best. Carl

Hi Carl! I enjoy to watch your every video about the Sony HX400V. I bought it few weeks ago from someone, who bought the second hand one for 260 eur, then he planned to sell it for 200 eur few days later and he offered it to me for 180 eur. I jumped on the offer and I'm very satisfied with the camera, it's also in best condition, as it's new.
I have also Sony HX90 from Autumn 2015, so I had some doubts first, would HX400V be really that much better than HX90. After some weeks of use I can say that these both cameras somehow compensate each other. This is how:
HX90 is still the camera to have with wherever I go (I have waist bag and there is some place left where I always have HX90 last few years). I also prefer to use HX90 for video recording, because I can record in MP4 format 1920x1080 in 60 fps, while AVCHD format makes much bigger video files (and HX400V can take mp4 videos only in 1440x1080 and only 24 fps). The big difference for me is also that I can use on HX90 Multi Frame NR and Self Timer at once. I often take photographs of landscape in the night hours and it's natural for me to use Multi Frame NR (to reduce the noise) together with the Self Timer (10 seconds), so the camera doesn't shake when it takes the photo (even if I put it on very stable base like concrete or "just" on tripod). BUT HX400V can't do that both at the same time: either Multi Frame NR and normal press of button, either Self Timer and NO using Multi Frame NR. This is something what really bothers me... I even tried to use HX400V connected with smartphone using NFC and it's still not possible to have these both.
ON another hand, HX400V clearly has much bigger zoom range. It somehow has also very great image stabilization. But the fact that you can not turn it off, while still having the shaking picture while taking photos or videos at 100x zoom, that's also not something what I like... But when it comes to macro, it's even a bit better than a HX90 too. I think it's about 3 cm (maybe more or maybe less) minimum distance from lens for HX90. But when I tried to shoot macro with HX400V, I think that minimum distance is maybe just very few milimeters distance from the ring, or about 1 cm metering from the glass. That's great too.
Another bad thing in HX400V is the small EVF, if I compare HX400V to HX90. It's really pain in the... eye. It's small, it's hard to see the whole picture (from border to border) even if I take the sunglasses off (in sunny summer day) each time when I use it. I also found out that I never had problems with HX90 to hold it really horizontal (when I took the photos of sea level or buildings or whatever). BUT as I see later when I check the photos (on the camera or on PC), I have big problems with that when I hold HX400V and look into the EVF. I always use 3x3 grid on both cameras. But it's something very uncomfortable with HX400V, to actually see the whole picture clear and also get that "horizontal feel", as I'm used to have when I use HX90. I usually never had to rotate the photos later (to catch the horizontal level of photos taken) taken with HX90 (and using either LCD either EVF). But now I hardly find photos which are totally horizontal, taken with HX400V when I use EVF (which I have to use in bright sunlight). Maybe it's about holding the big camera in the hand, maybe it's more about the EVF, but these are the problems which I found with taking photos with HX400V using EVF.
There is also one bigger problem which I have with the red MOVIE button. I'm very much used to have it just there in the corner of HX90, where I can press it without any problem anytime very easily. BUT when I use HX400V, especially with the EVF, so when I have HX400V on my face, it's much harder to reach that red Movie button to press it. Even bigger problem is, when I want to stop the video, because when I try to stretch my thumb to reach the red movie button, while holding HX400V on my face, every little shake or sudden movement (while I try to reach the movie button) is recorded on the video, before I finally reach the button and stop the video (and it's also not that great to have the thumb all the time on the movie button, while holding the camera on the face, to maybe reach it easier at the end of video). This is even bigger problem when I take a video at the bigger zoom, like 50x or 100x, when the last seconds of video are often shaken because of reaching for that red movie button.
HX400 is much bulkier and heavier than HX90. It's not the camera to have it always with you (I bought the case, I have one pocket tripod which can go together in that small case too, I ordered from Aliexpress also some filters (UV filter, Polarizing filter, even NDx8 filter) few days ago. I ordered that time also the remote trigger and another one pocket tripod (it's only 15 cm folded, against the 13 cm folded which I have now, I hope it would be possible to put that one into that small case Lowepro Format 120, which I bought for HX400V too).
That bigger size of HX400V really comes handy when you hold the camera in the hands. It's much easier to hold it stable, it gives also much of that DSLR feel in the hands, which I like a lot too.
So if I make conclusion: HX400V is better than HX90 because of better lens, it indeed has less noise than HX90 (although they both have same sensor size). It has bigger zoom range than HX90 and also great image stabilization which is at least that good as in HX90. It's easier to hold it in the hands while taking photos, having kind of DSLR feel.
But HX90 is for me still better for video recording in MP4 format while having 1920x1080 60 fps (I can't see much or any difference between AVCHD and MP4 format, when I take videos on HX90), while using HX400 I can use only AVCHD with these numbers (while having much bigger video files then). So if I don't really need to use 50x or 100x zoom while recording video, I still prefer to use HX90 for that.
HX90 can also use Self Timer together with MultiFrame NR (when taking night photos), so using HX90 for night photos is just easier and maybe even get better results, than using HX400V for night photos. On another hand HX400V produce less noise in the photo, but I still doubt if this can compensate the lack of option to use both (Self Timers and MultiFrame NR) at the same time.
But as I said, I ordered the remote trigger for HX400V, so this limitation of HX400V can be maybe beaten. So I will put it on MultiFrame NR, using direct press to shoot, but with remote trigger, so the camera will be steady from the start to the end of night shoot.
Carl, I hope I gave here some useful information, regarding the differences between the HX400V and HX90, which you maybe didn't know and also your viewers, so this could be I hope some useful info too.
Carl, thank you again for your great informative and inspirational videos about the HX400V. I'm looking forward to watch them more as they probably come too.

@@carlreader8939 Hi Carl, thank you for reply. Just wondering, do you miss that combination on HX400V, to use Self Timer together with MultiFrame NR. Because you don't have HX90, you might not miss it that much. But wouldn't it be useful to have that on HX400V too, what do you think? I know the difference between single frame and multi frame NR on HX90 and that difference is kind of difference making night shoots on compact camera or DSLR kamera.
There are new versions of HX90 recently, HX95 and HX99 (which has touch screen and some more cool stuff). I think at least HX99 can record also videos in 4K, if not both. Maybe you would like to try them too, especially HX99. ;)

@@Zokimaster I would like to use the self-timer and multi-frame if I could, but I do find the self-timer and cable effective. I have not used the HX90, but if I come into some money, I might try to newer versions, since to seem to like that line of camera. I'm going to take a look at the HX99 now. Thanks for you input. @@carlreader8939 Yes, the cable remote trigger will help in this case, that's why I ordered it on Aliexpress too. In fact, I even got idea to search for it online, after I saw you showed it in the video (I forgot which video was that, but I think it was your video). Thank you!
If I may, here is the link, I found very cheap one, I think it will suit the HX400V as well (and it's not affiliate link, I don't even have aff. link at Aliexpress):

About the HX99. Yes, it was pretty much best superzoom pocketsize compact some years ago (version HX90). I'm glad Sony decided to make updated versions HX95 and HX99 after that. In fact, I wouldn't mind to replace my HX90 with the HX99 too. But I would still want to have it with me wherever I go, while having HX400V as additional camera for specific photo sessions here and there.

    • @carlreader8939
      @carlreader8939  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi - In a way, changing the settings on a camera is a form of photo editing. It changes the look of a photo to what you want it to be. Digital photography does this more than the old film photography did, but even with film, photos were edited in the dark room or with filters, double exposures were used, dodging and burning and all that. I agree that you should concentrate on taking the best photo you can and leave it at that, but the reality is, professional photographers do a heck of a of lot of work both in changing settings, using filters, learning what cameras do and with all sorts of editing. If one photographer won't edit, another will. Often, to get a job you have to edit, or to sell a photo you have to edit. In a way, photography is not photography anymore but imaging. You make an image in any way you can. The most satisfying image is the one that comes out of the camera perfectly. Those are few and far between, but we all try our best. Keep doing things your way. You are the only one you have to satisfy. All the best. Carl
