    For that same price, dude could have kept the case and PSU, but gone to a rx 6700xt, i5 12400, new mobo, 32 gigs of ram, and a 2tb nvme. And it would have absolutely blown the doors off of a 9th gen i5 and 4060ti.

  • @milescarter7803
    @milescarter7803 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    The only gripe is he picked the worst possible price/performance graphics card and it really impacts the whole upgrade: 3060ti performance is about the same, even much better in memory bandwidth.
    Going with an RX6700XT or 3060ti would have saved you $100 toward the platform while not being any slower! Moving to a 12100 is actually faster in games if you still liked to pick up a case.
    Can get 12600k, Z690 ASUS return, 32GB DDR5 5600 and 3060Ti for $700, or try the 12100 its still better than what you had and there is an upgrade path.
    MicroCenter is stoked, the GPU and power supply have the best markup from them. I just go in looking for value, just cause you spin 700 doesn't mean I don't want to maximize my return.

      He can literally jump into a 4th Gen Xeon for $30 and it will be better. Processors $5-20 like Xeon E3 (1220v3,1225v3,1226v3, 1230v3, 1231v3,1240v3,1241v3). Sweet spot today is $10.99 E3 1226v3 with make an offer. And for a motherboard the B85M $25+$12 shipping make an offer. (You can find 4th gen OEM systems out by the trash and take their motherboard, it will work the same)
      Just those 2 things will let him keep all the old ram SSD and the video card is honestly still OK.
      FX was a dog when new. The 1226V3 is 55% faster on one core, and 78% faster with 4 cores loaded up. I would double check, but I think the FX is only a quad core even if it pretended to have 8 before the class action lawsuit.

      I'm still running an FX8350. It's not nearly as bad as people make out. Switching to a new platform (Xeon as another suggested) with very used parts from 10 years ago isn't exactly going to make things that much better. It's more of a lateral move at that point. Best to just save up for a couple years and make a true upgrade with a new build. Get the last generation to save money, like with the current Zen 3 stuff that's really dropped compared to Zen 4 and DDR5. Add in a 6000 series video card, and they'd be flying compared to what they have now. Enjoy what you have, that's what counts. If your kid likes their system, then it's worthwhile.

    CPU/GPU upgrades aren't in the pipeline for me just yet, but I'm considering trying an AMD gpu down the line. After all, 40 series is not a worthwhile upgrade for the price unless I buy a 4080 or 4090.
    A card like the 7900 xtx matches the 4080 in most games for $200 less, at the cost of weaker upscaling technology. Since I only use upscaling in doom eternal, I can't justify spending that extra $200.

    I'm actually surprised he didn't get a 1TB or 2TB nvme drive instead of the 32 gig of ram as 16 was still good, but as I have 32 in my current system, I understand wanting more ram since it's cheap now.

    why would you waste 130$ on a power supply, when your new gpu uses less power than the old ? for looks ?? and why the extra ram when he currently only has a 1 tb sata ssd. he is very unlikely running into RAM limitations with 16gb. but a 2tb nvme for the same price would be way more useful long-term.

    I got the same montech air case but mine only came with 2 fans. I did put my 280mm cpu liquid cooler in front of the case and 1 fan in the rear and 1 on top in the back. Max cpu temp in my case is 47C and max gpu temp is 60C.

    Love your stuff Greg, but really think this series would be greatly increased in value by showing some before/after benchmarks, even if it was just a run of Timespy or something. Show people what their money is getting them in performance increase. Without that context it’s just parts in a box.

    Nice. I too have the Montech, which is a nice case on a budget. Only thing I don't really like about it is the cable management in the back. Leaves very little room, or at least mine left virtually no room for my SSD drive. Had to mount it inside and on top of the PSU cage. Even then the back was hard to close and wiring was still a pain. I'm guessing they've improved that a little.

      Might one suggest a Geforce4? Lol, the FX series was such a disappointment. I had friends whose components literally de soldered and fell off the board while it was running (FX5700). And a GeForce 3/4 actually had better performance.
      In all seriousness a 4th gen Xeon E3 12xx v3 (like 1226v3,1230v3,1231v3,1240v3,1241v3 and a thrown out HP/Dell/Lenovo Asus/Gateway PC can get you up and gaming. The RX580 8GB for $45 new on AliExpress aren't the worst option either.

    While it should be a big upgrade from a 1070, it's a shame that the 4060 Ti is such a bad card for the money. But, at least it makes more sense for this build than someone coming from a 2000/3000 series GPU.

    For a 40 series card, the 4060ti is laughably better than the 1070ti. I agree with other viewers saying he could have gotten a much better gaming computer with a 6000 series AMD card and a better CPU. Sadly, this is the state of things. NVIDIA still has a lion's share of the GPU market, and will for the time to come.

    Being as his platform is a 16X Gen3 PCI-e & the new RTX4060 Ti video card is an 8X Gen5 PCI-e, wouldn't he feel that performance loss even though it is a huge upgrade from a GTX1070? Then again, you don't know what you're missing if haven't seen it at full potential.
    Sorry if that comes across as a negative & I hope he's happy with it.

    • @benjaminsmekens2344
      @benjaminsmekens2344 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a 8x pci-e gen4 card. But other then that, he shouldn't have bought that card, instead upgraded the platform with 5600x3d, b550 mobo, nvme and 6700xt. Would have given him miles better performance, but as long as he's happy, who cares 🤷‍♂
