Thanks for a superb job on my amp Martin, I feel its been in the right hands to identify the issues with it and pleased they've been resolved, really great work and an entertaining 45 mins. Great playing and sound demo as well. Cheers Wayne
Great job Martin! I usually replace every single electrolytic cap in these Super Sonics. At a minimum, the power supply and some component readjusting here and there to keep things cooler. Fender likes to put hot things right on the board or leaning on capacitors. I actually like the Super Sonic 22 and the more powerful versions. They’re a lot of fun, as you found out for yourself!
Hello Matt, thank you. The customer was happy it was running again. But if it comes in again I certainly will change all the caps. And any others that come across the bench will also get a full re-cap. I like this amp two. It surprised me how good it sounded. Take care Matt.
I would have suggested replacing the two small caps next to the voltage regulators and heatsinks with 105C caps, leaning the new caps away from the heatsinks; they're probably fairly well baked from heat exposure. Also check the soldering to the Thermistor, the black disc on the rear corner of the board ---- those things run *blistering hot*, and it appears to be leaning against a film cap. Thermistors should never be mounted flush on a circuit board, but virtually every manufacturer does it.....😖
Hello. I checked the Thermistor when I checked for dry joints. The board was in good shape. I have been in and checked and moved any leaning caps. I will certainly change all the caps on the board next time. Take care.
Great video - thanks....I quite often get 248 volts AC out the wall at my house, it's a nightmare if you have valve amps - ended up getting a Variac to sort the problem.
Hello, thank you. Faulty tube socket? I wonder if it is a common problem on these amps. Let me know if that's the problem. Thanks for watching and take care.
@@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher Capacitors and sockets changed… and the noise is stil there… 😞 Rushing water noise or popcorn noise, I don't know exactly how they call it. On some other videos, the answer was the reverb tank, the tubes, a resistor… My tubes and tank are ok. So I don't know where to look for exactly now…
Beautiful work , I’m taking my Super Sonic 60 to Sweetwater tomorrow for the same kind of work. I want it as close to factory as possible without breaking the bank, if possible
I have wondered for several years why there aren't more guitar players using theses Fender Super Sonic amps. Perhaps it's the price tag ? The drive channel is a bit like a Boogie. You have to fiddle a 'lot' with the duel gains and EQ's to get 'that sound', but it's all there. Another 'Why' is why Fender UK let their amps out to retail with the mains TX set at 230 V AC ?? Great repair Martyn and superb playing to demo a great amp.
They are very fiddly with the gain pots. They also don’t have a great reputation when it comes to reliability in stock form. A complete recap in the power supply/low voltage supply and they’re rock solid. Those IC caps really did a disservice on these things. I actually like them quite a bit after they’ve been serviced.
Hello Pete. I was surprised when I did he the demo how much gain this amp had. The clean sound was good too. The transformer was set at 230 volts.. Thanks Pete, take care
PS, some tasty playing once again! Many jazz-influenced players are so cerebral that they're boring to listen to, except to other jazz guitarists, but you've got an ear for melody and a sense of swing. I can't play for beans but in my head I can follow where you're going. Who are the players that influenced you most as a kid?
As a kid I grew up on metal and classic rock. Carlos Santana was one of my influences and a lot of the metal guitarists. Later I leaned more to playing blues. All the Blues guys. Jimi Hendrix of course, Jeff Beck and Robin Ford. But I have had a go at palying most styles of music over the years.
Watching and laughing hysterically! The owner has dialed in this amp for his sound. All the exactly placed little pieces of green tape were just made redundant. The owner will definitely have lost "the sound!" Hearing loss may occur.
Building a JTM 45 Marshall with turret board a lot more friendly to service if it should go wrong. I have a Blackstar combo full of SMT'S no chance of repairing it.

Thanks Wayne. How are getting on with it?
Better than new Martin

always nice to hear you having a play. Love that F#/B for a maj9 sound, with a bit of Lydian to flavour it up.

Hello Jools. Wow, that's high. That must push the heater voltage to above 7 volts?
Yep I used to see 6.8 -6.9 volts AC on the heaters so ended up running my valve amps off a Variac set to 238 volts for that very reason.
You got that sounding right. Nice clear and spanking. Great job I rewired a circuit using the princeton tone stack and it sounds great.
Hello Ron, thank you. You can't beat the Fender tone stacks. Take care Ron.
Well that sounds absolutely superb. 😍
Hello Mark, thanks. I didn't expect it to sound that good. Take care.
That amp sounds fantastic and the playing too 🙂🎸👍
Hello, thank you. Thanks for watching and take care.
18:18 What is that? It's the answer a was looking for! My newly bought Supersonic has exactly the same problem! Now I know what to do! Thanks!

You could change the plate resistors. They can be noisy.

Hello, thank you. I am sure they will do a great job. Even I have heard of Sweetwater and I am in the UK. Thanks for watching and take care.

I have a blonde head version.Love it!

Hello, nice. Even better in a head version. Thanks for watching and take care.
Thanks for the advice Matt. If it comes back with more faults the full re-cap it will be. Take care.

Hello Jerry. Yes, it will sound very different now that it's biased correctly. And yes, much louder. It's a great sounding amp. Take care.

Hello. The Blackstar's are quite difficult to repair. You can't beat a hand wired amp. Take care.
