Deep Purple pre-Gillan was absolutely progressive for its time. Remember, no group ever called itself prog back then. Prog emerged as an amalgam of all those good groups with original ideas. I know because I watched it happen.
Unfortunately DP then lost the plot when they turned to pop-rock, so you're dead right calling that not prog.
But ... did you catch the *underrated* bit? ELP and Genesis underrated? Really? More like overrated, or at least in the case of ELP.

I discovered Eloy, whilst serving in the army in Germany. I was in Munchengladbach, it started to piss down so I ducked into a little record shop. I started looking at the prog rock section, saw the collection of Eloy albums, asked the owner about them saying I'd never heard of them.
For the next 2-3 hours he played me tracks from various albums, a great way to spend a wet Saturday afternoon.
A great band, a few unusual pronunciations in some of their songs, similar to Rush pronouncing balance as barance, but to me one of the best German bands nobody has ever heard of.

I think Gong (when Daevid Allen was leading it) should be on a list like this. They never made it to mainstream, but their music is both profound and amazingly complex. Daevid Allen (a.k.a. "Divided Alien") is one of the most creative geniuses in the progressive scene, also doing some fantastic solo work. Steve Hillage (on guitar) also has some phenomenal solo albums -- chief among them is Fish Rising, which has "Solar Musick Suite," one of the most amazing progressive pieces ever, ranking right up there with "Close to the Edge" by Yes. Unless you consider Gong to have received sufficient popular recognition, I think it MUST be on a "Most Underrated Progressive Rock Bands" list. Peace to all! :)

I learned about a few new bands, thanks. Gentle Giant is my fave of these seven bands and I saw them live on their Free Hand Tour. They were so amazing live. I really like UK band Skin Alley's LP Two Quid Deal. I also enjoy Flash with Peter Banks (original guitarist with Yes) 3 albums in 2 years, with In The Can the one I first heard in 1973. Family, Audience, Curved Air, Pentangle, Lindesfarne, Steeleye Span, The Incredible String Band, Procol Harum and The Strawbs are fine folk-based prog rock bands from the UK scene.from the late 60`s and the 70`s. None of it was called `prog rock back then, that term came much later. I also consider The Mothers of Invention and Captain Beefheart great examples of progressive rock music from the 60`s and 70`s. There was also a plethora of jazz-rock music that was considered progressive like Steely Dan, Little Feat, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, The Jazz Crusaders and Funkadellic. My tastes cross over many genres. Phil Collins had a great instrumental band called Brand X and Steve Morse played in another fine 70`s prog band called Dixie Dregs.

      GG should've closed the show.
Reminds me of a night in the same venue, Focus and Wishbone Ash. Focus was touring for the first time in the US. Tight as hell, unique and excellent musicianship, plus they did that deranged live version of Hocus Pocus, the one that's been floating around. Nicely done set.
And then Wishbone came out and blew them out onto Tremont Street....

Been following the Dregs since "Freefall." Saw them at Emory University's old cafeteria in the 70s. Was at the reunion show 20 years ago, and three years ago at Center State in Atlanta. Every single player is a TITAN on their instrument! The only bands I've seen more than the Dregs are YES and The Grateful Dead.

    • @theonetruerobb4852
      @theonetruerobb4852 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The Dregs aren't, strictly speaking, a Prog band. But they're a hell of a lot more "Prog" than Pink Floyd. Nothing against Floyd, but they seem to get falsely lumped into the Prog category for some reason. They, of course, aren't a Prog band. Some of these others mentioned in the vid certainly are, and Giant is one of the premier Prog bands of all time. Floyd, not so much...
I once went to a Dream Theater show in Boston - Jordan Rudess had an endorsement deal with a Synth company I was working at. He put some of us on the list. We were delighted to find that the Dregs were opening. Original violinist Al Sloan was unavailable for that tour, and we had to settle for original Mahavishnu member Jerry Goodman. Heavens! It was a damned fine evening....

For me, the most underrated band is VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR!!! They made real masterpieces with Pawn hearts and Still life, but never achieved the success of Genesis, Pink Floyd or Yes!
GENTLE GIANT is really very underrated when it comes to its popularity. HOWEVER, in terms of esteem and tenacity of his fans, they have a place of choice because their music is so unique. GG is the most pleasant band to listen to with all these instruments mixing in melodies with a complex structure and a genre difficult to classify ranging from medieval, to classical, to progressive, to rock, to folk...
Really, GG is the perfect group for who wants to explore the extent of what talented multi-instrumentalists can offer.
And I would rank my favorite bands like this:
    1. Pink Floyd (AHM, M, DSOTM, WYWH, A, TW)
    2. Genesis (NC, F, SEBTP, TLLDOB, TOTT)
    3. Yes (TYA, F, CTTE, TFTO, R)
    4. Gentle Giant (ATT, TF, O, IAGH, TPATG, FH)
    5. King Crimson (ITCOTCK, LTIA, R, D)
    6. Van Der Graaf (PH, SL, G, HTH)
    7. Harmonium (1, SOABD5S, H)
    8. Patricia Barber (CB, MC, N, V, C)
    9. Miles Davis (KOB, SMPWC, MFV, C/R/S/W, MS)
    10. Led Zeppelin (1, 2, 4, HOTH, PG, HTWWW)
And I need to add these disks:
    11. Tubular bells (Mike Oldfield)
    12. Oxygen (J-Michel Jarre)
    13. Moving pictures/Permanent waves/Hemisphere (Rush)
    14. Thick as a brick (Jethro Tull)
    15. Turn up the quiet (Diana Krall)

I jammed with David Surcamp in 1979 we were forming a band "The Pedestrians" we wrote a single " can you see him walking? He's a Pedestrian"". Sadly, omitting Porcupine Tree and Spocks Beard you will never reference Specter but you will find Harlequin Mass. I produced Apocalypse in 1979.

There is a number very versatile Prog Rock bands from italy, that were formed in the 70s, but continued playing way after prog rock was gone in England. My favourite of them is P.F.M., what stands for "Premiata Forneria Marconi". They strongly resembled King Crimson in some respect (espcially in some of their drum work). They even worked together with Peter Sinfield for their lyrics, but in my opinion they were best when they sang italian. Their special italian melodic touch and high musical craftmanship made them also a kind of its own. Their first three albums are classics. I recommend the song "E festa" for a first check. Other interesting italian prog rock bands are "Le Orme" (check e.g. "Uomo di pezza"), "New Trolls" or " Banco del mutuo soccorso". Whereas PFM had also some commercial success in the US (but not in ther rest of Europe), those others seem to have been (and maybe are) quite popular in Italy but nowhere else, I suppose.

Hi, Samarof89, thank you for this interesting video! I love for example Camel´s music since midth of the seventies (I am a 64-aged drummer). But I have a question: what is the measure for beeing "underrated"? To be listed in the Top 20 or Top 100 or something else? I am not interested in "underrated or not". I love the music and take it as a gem. For example: the music of Camel touches my heart and I love to hear it. So I don´t care about "underrated or not". I mention these words in friendly purpose. So: Thanks and carry on!
