Thank you! This is the first prog rock assessment video I've seen which gives little snippets of music for those of us who are not familiar with all the bands.
The (Moving Waves) album by Focus will stomp on quite a few of the albums in your first series. I haven't heard any of the other "honorable mentions" yet but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some other really good ones too.
Great selection !!! I would also mention some German bands that also stood out very well: TRIUMVURAT (Spartacus, 1975); ELOY (Power and Passion, 1975); JANE (Together, 1972); KRAFTWERK (Autobahn, 1974); FRUMPY (Frumpy 2, 1971).
Not sure why the cutoff in '69 starting with King Crimson. I would have started with the first concept album and one of the first Progressive Rock records, Days of Future Past by the Moody Blues.
I'm thinking 1966 and Freak Out Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention was the first Prog release to the main stream- note Prog is not a UK only affair
It´s a good and coherent list indeed but at the same time surprised for the absence of The Dark Side Of The Moon, some Gentle Giant masterpieces, Wobbler´s From Silence To Somewhere and Focus Hamburger Concerto.
Gentle giant the greatest most most epic legendary unique innovative genius band ever This just prooves they are the most obscenely criminally underrated band ever.
This is a very appriciable selection, with a lot of well known (and much less known) gems. Personally I would have dropped Marillion (and in case one Jethro Tull record) to make room for at least one Gentle Giant album. The Honourable Mentions are certainly worthy... some of them (Area above all) would have certainly deserved a position in the proper ranking.
Not my list but certainly interesting. It of course depends a lot on your personal history and what you're acquainted with. I really love that you include some Italian and other non-Anglosaxon progrock.
Definitely great list all classics are there, but I am personally missing newer great albums like Anglagard - Hybris or Flower Kings - Stardust... or anything from Transatlantic, Arena, Iluvatar, Discipline and many, many, many more 🙂. Whenever there is video with top X prog albums it include mostly only 70's classics...
I agree with what at least one other has said, this should of been titled, "My favorite" not "The Greatest" 40 bands. That said, I look forward to checking out the few bands I'm unfamiliar with and reconnecting with a few not heard in much too long. I did appreciate there were the 3 from Rush but brother, why the pass on 2112? Where's Crime of the Century? No Kansas or Gentle Giant? Again, too subjective to calling it the greatest, however, I would love to see your list of your favorite top 10 ranked!
Ah! Showing the sleeves, tracklist, and a small sample of the music is so much better than listening to people talk endlessly while only seeing their faces.
"Storia di un minuto" is a great debut album but is far from being PFM's best album. Consider instead "Per un amico" (or "Photos of ghosts"), "L'Isola di Niente" (The world became the world") or "Chocolate Kings".
It's difficult for me to choose only 40. I love almost all of this selection. My own 40, of course, would be different. I wonder what fraction of mine would match these?
Love Rush also, glad to see 3 albums of their's on this list. Actually thought 2112 should have been on there as well. ELP was on this list with Tarkus.
It’s your list, so these are comments rather than complaints: 1) There are several albums listed I wouldn’t call prog rock, and 2) a list of prog rock albums that doesn’t have any Brian Eno seems suspect to me.
