Look at Mary Ure’s character in this movie. She’s a total bad ass. She’s not there as arm candy for Burton. She’s an important part of the team and his character also treats her with that respect. She doesn’t sacrifice her femininity to be an able and effective agent in the story. Awesome scenes of her not hesitating to be side by side with Eastwood blasting Germans and doing what it takes for them to succeed. And it all plays out naturally with no virtue signaling, no berating or de-intellectualizing of men to elevate her, no displays of unbelievable physical prowess, just her being someone who has their shit together. Heidi is also portrayed well by Ingrid Pitt in a similar manner. Modern movie makers could learn a lot from a movie like this on how women can be extremely capable without becoming ostensibly a man in their character and behavior.

I was a standby prop on this film at a very young age about 21.We worked a month on pre production and 10 months shooting. So almost a year making good money working with legends. All the exterior shots were done in Germany. We lived in the Europa Hotel in Salzburg Austria and commuted daily into Germany for about 3 months. The remaining 8 months at MGM UK studios shooting all the interior shots. Due to the snow melting early the 2nd camera crew continued shooting long shots in the Italian and Swiss Alps. Burton was a good guy always telling good jokes and had his personal hairdresser in attendance always. You should have seen the entourage Liz Taylor had ( Royalty ) Eastwood had nobody, Eddie Silver his hairdresser hired by the production company etc. Eastwood worked out and jogged every day loved riding a BSA motorbike in the UK he purchased two, one for his stand in to ride with him. He always drank herbal tea when on the set. I know because it was my job to make it. Brian Hutton the director wore a black T shirt every day. At the end of the movie he gave his chauffer his white Rolls Royce!
Wow ! What a movie to work on. now a classic must be nice to look back on it now thanks for sharing all the behind the scenes stories great to read thanks

I just happened to catch this terrific film on TCM one Sunday. I'm not really into War films. But it just engrossed me from start, to Nazi Killing finish!! BRILLIANT stuff, and I LOVE Burton and Clint
Amazing how many people HAVE NOT even heard of this movie. The best DAMN one Eastwood ever made too. FINALLY, Richard Burton did something besides a 'mushy' love story. His kid suggested he do just that too!
Yeah Johnathan this film never gets old my so so favorite the music the snow scenes everything is wonderful just wonderful, today's generations should watch this masterpiece fantastic movie i just love it..salute to the entire production crew + those fine actors who did mervellous..best wishes from paradise Fiji..three cheers "WHERE EAGLES DARE"
I've driven to Werfen in Austria where the Castle of Eagles still stands. So many recognizable places. As a lifelong fan of this movie it was a fantastic pilgrimage having a beer in the Shadow of the Schloss Adler!!
@@JonathanEBoyd We stayed the night in one of the many taverns there. My satnav took us the scenic route through narrow twisting and snow-covered roads till there it was...illuminated against the night sky, the castle. You know the music when Smith and Schaffer first see it, it was awesome! The weird thing was that there wasn’t a single photo on any wall from the movie. Even the website of the castle makes no mention of it. That didn’t stop us enjoying every minute of it before we continued our drive home to Bulgaria.
@@JonathanEBoyd I think it was the winter of 2015. Werfen is about 45 minutes south west of Salzburg and the halfway point between England and Bulgaria by road. We've been out here for 8 years now and have loved every minute of it, especially all the amazing road trips we've been lucky enough to enjoy. Too many to mention and almost too good to be true. I just hope we can do them again when we get our lives and freedom back...
Even though 'Where Eagles Dare 'was made in an era of great WW2 movies, the intricacy of the plot was always which set it apart. Fantastic pacing in great sets too!
Besides Kelly's Heroes Where Eagles Dare is one of my all time favorite war movies, the plot and dialog is way over the top but absolutely entertaining, as kids back then we would play W.E.D we would all want to be LT Shaefer (Eastwood) machine gunning and grenading countless lined up Germans--how does that castle hold so many men? The Bell helicopter (?!) the "Chuff" sound of the suppressed pistols, the unlimited ammo that they all have, the bottomless rucksacks of dynamite, the resonance of "Broadsword Calling Danny-Boy, come in Danny Boy" all fantastic to us kids, we loved it, and still do. Although with the desperate music in the background I find the fight scene on the cable car really awful to watch, and that brief false hope of the wounded men huddled on the floor of the cable car before it explodes gives the movie a really raw edge, any time it is on TV I will always watch it, never get bored and try to count up the kill ratio of Eastwood (I got to 80). As a matter of interest "Cinema Retro" magazine released a "Making Of" edition of Where Eagles Dare and is worthwhile hunting down, although it was later released in a limited edition (115 Pages) and is the bible of the behind the scenes of this epic classic, you can find out that Burton's constant drunkeness was an issue during production, how Eastwood settled into his role and enjoyed his time with the crew, the magazine is full of pictures and anecdotes and a worthwhile prize to the fan of this movie 🙂
Very interesting and valid opinions I know it’s not a perfect movie but it’s still a favourite of mine I’ll try and track down that behind the scenes sounds very interesting . Where eagles dare will always be a classic in my eyes .
I remember in 1986 when I was 14 yrs old during the golf war between Iraq & Iran I've been watched this movei 4 first time it was a gretest movie I,ve ever seen ,and I wished I had a video casset in that time to watch it again & again &....
It's something to see this, especially since the last time, I was a kid The big thing in these movies was those tigger line for explosives...always blowing things up Also, I love your genuine enthusiasm here 😃
this movie is such a classic in my eyes . it's one of my Favorites so easy to be enthusiastic about Thanks for watching and the kind words very much appreciated
A favourite adventure story with some of the best cast members ever to grace the screen……loved it because there were no boring scenes at all with sharp dialogue…..total excitement!
I first saw it in the beginning of the 80's, I was a teenager at the time. One of the best movies I've ever seen. The plot is very intriguing, didn't fully understand it before I watched a second time.
I literally just watched this movie 5 minutes ago for the 3rd time this year, it has the occasional cheesy 70's action movie bits (The classic car explodes because it roles down a cliff), but those bits just make it funny and even more enjoyable. I've always loved ww2 movies and spy movies and action movies, which makes this movie just perfect for me.
I believe it was made in 1970. And yes It's one of my favorites as well. The man who plays Major Van Hatten plays the part so convincingly, yet in real life he is an englishman and sounds so british.
It was released in 1969 in USA 1970 in the UK One of my Favourites of all time Major Von Happen Played by Derren Nesbitt He plays it so perfectly it’s funny when you hear his voice on interviews. such a classic film
Congratulations ! you really captured the essence for this masterpiece of a film. Did you know it is Quentin Tarantino's all time favourite film...I think that speaks volumes

Always great to have a fellow Where Eagles Dare fan. The movie is one that I would take to my desert island, but.... The book is exceptional. Listen to the audiobook and let your imagination mingle with the images from the movie and you have the best movie that Holywood will never make.
@@JonathanEBoyd The storyline is exactly the same, but Smith and Shaffer don't kill anywhere near as many Germans as in the film. It's all about finding the traitor, not taking on the German army. Even Von Halpen survives. Surprised you didn't know it was a novel. It was penned by the legendary Alistair McLean.
OMG, I remember seeing this with " Kelly's Heroes ! " at a Chicago-area theater 🎥. That was about 50+ years ago. I loved the music soundtrack, the introduction, the cinematography, and how the story slowly builds up to the climax. They just don't make films like these anymore ! One slight error I noticed as far as I recall ; the Helicopter used in the movie was an " R-4" , and It wasn't utilized until the Korean War. And I don't recall the Germans or anyone else using 🤔 Helicopters during WW II. Other than that, I liked the movie a great deal. The movie that's based on the book goes into a lot more detail though.
@@JonathanEBoyd just a few quotes from "The longest day" to encourage you in watching it :D Gen. Blumentritt, of Feldmarshall Von Runstedt's headquarters in Normandy: ""We are living an historical moment. We are going to lose the war, because the glorious Fuhrer has taken a sleeping pill... and is not to be awakened. It's unbelievable. Think of it Kurt, don't ever forget it: We are witnessing something which historians will always say is completely improbable... and yet it is true. The Fuhrer is not to be awakened!!! I sometimes wonder which side God is on." --- Major Pluskat: My God! [focuses binoculars and looks back at his men] The invasion! They're coming! Wehrmacht Officer: [to soldiers] Alarm!!! Pluskat: [calls higher command in a panic] Herr Oberstleutnant! The invasion has come! Five thousand ships, there - there must be over five thousand ships out there!! Oberstleutnant Ocker: [ignorantly confident] Now get a hold of yourself, Pluskat. [sips coffee] The Americans and the British don't have half as that many ships all together. Pluskat: DAMMIT, IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, COME UP HERE AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!! - That's fantastic! That's unbelievable! I-I just can't believe it! Ocker: [chuckles] My dear Pluskat, what course are these ships heading for? Pluskat: STRAIGHT FOR ME!!!
Read The Eagle Has Landed, it is so much better than the film. I do like the film but the book has so much more to it, especially the part where Devlin gets the army vehicles, particularly good.
The greatest war film in the history of world cinema, first-class actors in world cinema, direction, production, filming locations, dialogue, scenario, sound and visual effects, and a true story. You feel that the actors exerted all their experience and professionalism in directing this. I love this movie. We went to see its premier.I was 8 yrs old. My dad loved it. I love the bus driving at the end. .Thank you!
Wow that premiere Must have been awesome I love that scene as well such a great action scene the whole movie is great. one of my favourites of all time You're welcome My pleasure

Motor bike chase was an epic. And Clint a second rate punk A classic.

I just happened to catch this terrific film on TCM one Sunday.
I'm not really into War films.
But it just engrossed me from start, to Nazi Killing finish!!
BRILLIANT stuff, and I LOVE Burton and Clint
Glad To see someone who Enjoys this Film It's a real classic in my opinion

I have seen this movie many Many times still love seeing again and again
Good to hear one of my favourite movies of all time such a classic
A pure pleasure to watch this film. The opening theme was the international language of drama. Easily the equal of The Guns of Navarone.
Where eagles dare A Real Classic In My Eyes one of my favs still have to check out The Guns of Navarone tho I've Heard Good Things
Amazing how many people HAVE NOT even heard of this movie. The best DAMN one Eastwood ever made too. FINALLY, Richard Burton did something besides a 'mushy' love story. His kid suggested he do just that too!
I know right . it is relatively old to most people maybe that's why but it's some of eastwood's and burton's Finest work such a classic
Indeed Very well Said Best wishes to you Anand take care
I've driven to Werfen in Austria where the Castle of Eagles still stands. So many recognizable places. As a lifelong fan of this movie it was a fantastic pilgrimage having a beer in the Shadow of the Schloss Adler!!
wow That must have been phenomenal I'd Really love To Go one day and check it out
@@JonathanEBoyd We stayed the night in one of the many taverns there.
@@escapetheratracenow9883 wow that sounds like such an awesome experience how long ago was that ? I hope i can go one day
@@JonathanEBoyd I think it was the winter of 2015.

My mom and I would watch this wonderful movie every summer on the hottest day. We felt cooler ! Great memories. 🥰
Great Choice a real classic
This is a pure blast from beginning to end. Brilliant casting👍
indeed brilliant casting and an interesting plot a real classic
Even though 'Where Eagles Dare 'was made in an era of great WW2 movies, the intricacy of the plot was always which set it apart.
Fantastic pacing in great sets too!
@@alanknotts1844 Very True casting ,story, plot it's always an enjoyable watch a real classic
Incredible film and what an opening soundtrack, spine tingling!!!!
Indeed the sound Track is so epic Such a classic in my book
Mary Ure and Ingrid Pitt were total babes. RIP ladies.
May They Rest In Peace
It's a great movie and a great rewatch I had the movie on VHS I want to get it on DVD to put in my collection. A real classic
It's something to see this, especially since the last time, I was a kid
The big thing in these movies was those tigger line for explosives...always blowing things up

indeed Very Well said everything comes together on this movie such a classic
Other older wartime classics like this that have stood the test of time: THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, The Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, PATTON,
i still have to watch some of these thanks
A favourite adventure story with some of the best cast members ever to grace the screen……loved it because there were no boring scenes at all with sharp dialogue…..total excitement!
well said I agree 100 percent
The reason this movie was made was a request by Richard Burtons daughter to do a fun movie. He had been doing these epic historical dramas.
that's very interesting if true I'm glad he switched it up
Brilliant film … great story
Indeed well said that's why it's a classic
This is a great movie. I saw it at the theater when it first came out in 1969.

I first saw it in the beginning of the 80's, I was a teenager at the time. One of the best movies I've ever seen. The plot is very intriguing, didn't fully understand it before I watched a second time.

Fantastic movie!!!
indeed
I literally just watched this movie 5 minutes ago for the 3rd time this year, it has the occasional cheesy 70's action movie bits (The classic car explodes because it roles down a cliff), but those bits just make it funny and even more enjoyable. I've always loved ww2 movies and spy movies and action movies, which makes this movie just perfect for me.
well said this movie is one of my favourites such a classic always a n enjoyable watch
One of the best.

I believe it was made in 1970. And yes It's one of my favorites as well. The man who plays Major Van Hatten plays the part so convincingly, yet in real life he is an englishman and sounds so british.
It was released in 1969 in USA 1970 in the UK One of my Favourites of all time
Major Von Happen Played by Derren Nesbitt He plays it so perfectly it’s funny when you hear his voice on interviews. such a classic film

Always great to have a fellow Where Eagles Dare fan.
The movie is one that I would take to my desert island, but....
The book is exceptional. Listen to the audiobook and let your imagination mingle with the images from the movie and you have the best movie that Holywood will never make.
Brilliant didn't know there was a book I might have to check it out is the storyline the same sounds Interesting
Burton and Eastwood were a perfect pair in this film. One of my favorites. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting to hear your perspective . Despite it's flaws I still think it's a great movie not a perfect movie but one of my favourites
The Germans had though helicopters. Rocket-Wulf, Hinckel and Kolibri.
This is one of my top favorites! Thanks for this video and part 2 as well.

@@JonathanEBoyd just a few quotes from "The longest day" to encourage you in watching it :D
Gen. I sometimes wonder which side God is on."
---
Major Pluskat: My God!
❤ I watched this film in the cinema when it was first released - after I had read the book, by Alistair MacLean, and loved both.❤
still have to read the book but film is a classic i wonder what the differences are

Because this movie was one of the direct inspirations for the whole game series.
The greatest war film in the history of world cinema, first-class actors in world cinema, direction, production, filming locations, dialogue, scenario, sound and visual effects, and a true story. Nicely done. Great commentary. Derrick Nesbit was always great as a villain 🦹♀️ He had guest appearances on The Prisoner and Man in a Suitcase.

Definitely A true Classic Film . I misspoke not that it's a random film but many I've Spoke to haven't seen it or heard of it Even though it has 2 of the biggest movie stars in it & when I was making the video it didn't have a high IMDB Rating maybe a 5 or 6.5 out of 10 which Was Shocking but you are correct Take Care
@@JonathanEBoyd Really...It's at 7.6 now, never knew it was so low. There's about half a dozen 1 star reviews which are a comedy read. Rants that is an improbable story or about certain elements which didn't exist during WW2 such as the helicopter. If you only like movies that are historically accurate, then you're no doubt a boring nerd that needs to get a life 😂

Good thing the Spanish air force had old WW2 planes.back then.
The Germans had the most stylish uniforms of WW2.
The time frame was WWII - 1940- 1945. The most effective security measures the German militaries had was, likely, the Gestapo.
