The biggest and maybe the only laugh this movie got when I saw it in the theatre as a 13 year old in 1969 was when Major Smith tells Lt. Schaffer, "In the next 15 minutes we have to create enough confusion to get out of here alive." and Lt. Schaffer tells Major Smith, 'Major, right now you've got me about as confused as I ever hope to be." The entire audience laughed out loud at the response.
wow this film has many funny moments but i think it's when you watch it a 2nd time or another time you can really appreciate it . but that is a perfect point to laugh if I'm Honest Such a great movie
I’m 60 now, and I’ve known about this motion picture since the ‘80s. When it came out, I guess I was four, but never saw this movie on the big screen. Move ahead to around 1998. I was at a friend’s apartment one night, where we we drinking and indulging in a green leafy substance 😊. As we watched the movie on the ENCORE or STARZ Channel, the scene where Burton tells the Gestapo Major about the alleged plot to assassinate Hitler was hilarious when the Wehrmacht general yells “This is preposterous!”. It had us in stitches 😂😂👨🏻🦳🇺🇸.
Derren Nesbitt, playing Major von Hapen, is a classic! His portrayal of arrogance is spot on. Although playing a minor role compared to Eastwood and Burton, he really makes the most of his character.
indeed well said He's brilliant in this his attitude the way he delivers lines his whole essence while he maybe a supporting character he really makes this movie work it wouldn't be the same without him he's fantastic
+Mark Castelletti. Nesbitt is an old hand at playing creeps (see him as the blackmailer of gay men in "Victim" from 1962). This is one of his best roles.
According to Nesbitt, it took six takes to get the shot of Eastwood shooting him, twice. It was supposed to be one in the head and one in the chest - but the first five takes, the squib is his jacket was underwhelming (although each time writing off the jacket). On the sixth shoot (and final tunic), his jacket went off as if he'd been hit by a bazooka and he caught some of the debris in his eyes. Which lead to him then being taken to Denham A&E blindfolded, in SS uniform, with an apparent bullet hole in his head and trailing fake blood on the floor behind him. 😀

My favorite movie. Burton and Eastwood ❤️. First time I saw it I screamed out loud when that schloss was shown with that sudden music! I nearly got a heartattack. So did my friends when I screamed. 😂 Thank you for this.
As a teen in the 80s, I watched this movie on VHS rental so many times....I do miss the non-CGI movies...shot on-location. Today, hardly no-one would bother following a story so intricate. Kids have zero attention span....
this is a classic I know what you mean , while the story has a few twists and turns it's not too complex to enjoy . Kids have attention spans for what interests them
Thanks For the Kind Words Really appreciate it It's one of my all time favourite movies I've watched many times as well my pleasure thanks for watching
I could not agree more. It’s in my top 10 films of all time. I never tire of it. If I were a film director I’d love to remake this film as a tribute and an academic exercise. The main reason for doing so would be to upgrade the cable car scenes and make them look more realistic. But to be honest it would be difficult to find actors today that could do a better job.
First i watched this epic movie in the year 1989 and continue watching this every year not to miss Broadsword calls whenever I feel like I'm You tube. Greatest war movie ever made. Cool Calm Tough Richard Burton.
According to Derren Nesbitt, he was putting away four bottles of vodka a day at the time, so never sober. And his hair was not cut 'militarily short', like everyone else, at Liz Taylor's demand. 🙂
You messed up and glossed over the best part where the guy in the bed confirms the story that Richard Burton's character is telling, but yet it is all a lie and Burton's character had even conned that guy, Burton is playing a double/triple agent and he has got Eastwood's character so confused.
The only time I litteraly went "Say what" is where Richard Burton needs one the most powerful transmitters in the world to call Italy, when earlier, he tried to call London from an radio in a backpack... I just went 🤦♂️
I saw this film in Jagadamba,Visakhapatnam as an inaugural movie in1970,a real war adventure movie at the age of 14,folowing with Mecanna's Gold,The Guns of Navaronw,The Dirty Dozen and still remember every scenes!👏👏👏👏👏

you missed one of my favorite lines when Richard Burton was interrupted by the SS guy with the Luger, and he says "...I just uncovered a plot to assassinate the Fuhrer".
Interesting choice many people seem to love that line it never really stood out to me as one of the top lines in this movie maybe i'm wrong But still one of my favourite films of all time thanks for watching
@@JonathanEBoyd hahaha, yes what sticks out to me in that movie is the coolness of Richard Burton, coming up with the lines about "Himmler's brother", and walking down the road in the village at night when he and Eastwood see a checkpoint ahead, and he starts a nonchalant conversation about a girl as a distraction as they pass the guards, and of course, the "I just uncovered a plot to assassinate the Fuhrer". Always quick thinking, so cool and convincing lol
@@scottanthony4511 well said he's just got that overall charisma on que He's calm under pressure and knows how to handle situations just Real classy Such a great movie and brilliantly played by Burton. Just phenomenal

I love lowkey action films like this from the 60s & 70s that were straight up raw with the effects. Check out Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) by John carpenter
The problem with this film is that it is set during the second world war, although helicopters were first built in 1940, they were not used until after the war was over. The helicopter in this film, was a Korean war era helicopter. These would not have been available when the film was set.
Notice at 2:03, Von Hapen is wearing the Close Combat Clasp in gold, one of Nazi Germany's rarest and most prized decorations. (Only about 650 were awarded.) How a Gestapo officer would have qualified for such a medal is, of course, left unexplained.
'If any of you utters a word I'll kill you all, is that understood?' "Alright mate" Ratatatatat!atat!! Yeah, me and my mates have been quoting this movie since the days of VHS. Glad to see a new generation enjoying it!
@@JonathanEBoyd Think I first saw it in 1979. Loved it ever since. One of my mates was a senior first officer for British Airways in the 90s. Plenty of CVR recordings had "Dammit' or" THIS IS PREPOSTEROUS! " if they got rerouted, assigned a more difficult runway, passengers caught smoking on board etc Happy Days😂🤣
@@JonathanEBoyd One more anecdote for you. Me and another mate took a 2 week road trip around California in the summer of 1993. It didn’t get off to a good start. I forgot my driving licence. Damnit! My mate was under 25 so he couldn’t rent a car. We got tipped off that a dodgy Iranian firm round the back of LAX airport might rent us a car. They did. And they ripped me off with a battered 7 year old Honda CRX with 100,000 miles on the clock, duct tape holding the rear bumper on, no aircon and only one speaker working from the tape deck. What can you do? Long story short we got lost in LA and ended up in Watts, the area where the year before the LAPD had battered Rodney King to a pulp. The last place two young white lads should have been. Two things probably saved our asses. Driving a tatty looking old banger but secondly when we pulled up at some traffic lights, music did. A big car pulled up alongside us. The driver was a huge African American dude and he gestured at my mate to roll down his window. I thought, Oh shit, we’re done, he’s gonna shoot us now and this is turning into a really rotten holiday. “Hey brother, what’ movie’s that music from?” Where Eagles Dare, mate! “Oh yeah! That’s a great movie, you boys have a great day now!” Then he wheelspun away when the lights changed. We got out of dodge alive and went on to have a fantastic holiday- back in the days when you earned the average wage which was enough to get you a house,a new car and amazing holidays. Not bad for a 27 year old without a degree and few qualifications...happy times!

da ole grenade trick...perfectly timed!
Indeed 😀
My favorite classic RB movie
Good Choice a Classic Indeed
The best war movie that I've never seen! And I believe that it still remains the best!
It's one of my favourites that's for sure Such a classic
My favorite movie. Burton and Eastwood ❤️. First time I saw it I screamed out loud when that schloss was shown with that sudden music! I nearly got a heartattack. So did my friends when I screamed. 😂 Thank you for this.
haha Lol Such a brilliant experience to have with the movie & such a classic movie still one of my favourites
Written byAlaister McLean, who lives in Glasgow went to my school!!
wow really what school was that ? was you there the same time has him ? that's brilliant
Kids have attention spans for what interests them
@@JonathanEBoyd In Ghana I used to sneak up the VHS in the morning
I was a child in the 1980s but I appreciated the technology at the time.
I loved this movie way back in the mid1990s.
Have seen this film so many times growing up! Hilarious to hear someones commentary about it, great work mate cheers.
Thanks For the Kind Words Really appreciate it It's one of my all time favourite movies I've watched many times as well my pleasure thanks for watching
A great film with a great assembly of actors, not forgetting the people behind the camera, the glory days of film.
Indeed 1 From the real Golden era of film a masterpiece in my eyes
I could not agree more. It’s in my top 10 films of all time. I never tire of it. If I were a film director I’d love to remake this film as a tribute and an academic exercise. The main reason for doing so would be to upgrade the cable car scenes and make them look more realistic. But to be honest it would be difficult to find actors today that could do a better job.
Unbelievable film RIP to all
Indeed RIP to These Legends
The subtle musical score through out, "Broad sword calling Danny Boy" great shoot outs, Richard Burton is like the team leader through the film
indeed
4:54 my favorite line in the movie
Good Choice such a classic Line
Well done
Thanks
This is why I love watching Clint Eastwood's movies
Clit Eastwood is pretty legendary in all his movies
Richard Burton is so good in this role.
indeed He's the best just perfect in this
First i watched this epic movie in the year 1989 and continue watching this every year not to miss Broadsword calls whenever I feel like I'm You tube.
Greatest war movie ever made.
Cool Calm Tough Richard Burton.
Well Said a Proper Classic Movie One of my all-time Favourites
If you like this, I guarantee you will also like Guns of Navarone (with an even better cast)
@@fifthbusiness1678 yeah
I was expecting you Mr Boyd..:-P thanks for the upload, and commentary.
Thanks Much appreciated thanks for watching
Richard Burton in one of his finest movie roles
indeed I think so to
Another was in the movie Wild Geese.
According to Derren Nesbitt, he was putting away four bottles of vodka a day at the time, so never sober. And his hair was not cut 'militarily short', like everyone else, at Liz Taylor's demand. 🙂
my favorite as well watching it with my dad and later with my son. 3 generations of fans! the school bus scene is epic
Sounds Legendary one of my favourite films the bus scene is so classic the whole film is classic
Thanks 4 a walk down memory lane
You're most Welcome
The best mission movie ain’t tired of watching it
Indeed it never gets old such a classic
Jonathan, I think your comments are spot on. You obviously love this film as I do.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words much appreciated .Yes this film is one of my favourites of all time Such a classic
You messed up and glossed over the best part where the guy in the bed confirms the story that Richard Burton's character is telling, but yet it is all a lie and Burton's character had even conned that guy, Burton is playing a double/triple agent and he has got Eastwood's character so confused.
I see your point
The only time I litteraly went "Say what" is where Richard Burton needs one the most powerful transmitters in the world to call Italy, when earlier, he tried to call London from an radio in a backpack... I just went 🤦♂️
haha lol that's a very good point I never thought about that before
Gotta be the funniest commentary I’ve ever heard!!!
Thanks & thanks for watching one of my favourite movies of all time
I saw this film in Jagadamba,Visakhapatnam as an inaugural movie in1970,a real war adventure movie at the age of 14,folowing with Mecanna's Gold,The Guns of Navaronw,The Dirty Dozen and still remember every scenes!👏👏👏👏👏
That's interesting it's one of my favourites such a classic movie

@@JonathanEBoyd you are welcome & i personally like it that you highly favour this, one of the greatest, war mission movie.
Give me the water is a goodie. Can you get the 1st part uploaded .. Round the table..?? If possible
Those are some great bits I did do a bit of the round table in part 1 th-cam.com/video/cavHqijYBJs/w-d-xo.html. I couldn’t upload all of it coz the video would probably get taken down by youtube . I’m not uploading much more where eagles dare stuff any more thanks for watching take care ✌️
Great stuff, Jonathan!
thanks so much really appreciate it
Nice sharing.thanks.
Thanks For Watching One of my favourite movies of all time
I've fired an MP44 sub machine gun and you can empty the magazine of 30 rounds in less than 10 seconds!
These guys had what's called a Hollywood magazine.....endless rounds!
I've also fired the MG42 and that thing is a beast....awesome weapon!
fair enough
you made me laugh at my favourite film😄
thanks it's such a great film so many brilliant moments
Yo, you had me cracking up. Thanks for your excellent commentary, very observant, but also very funny. I first saw this movie in summer camp as a kid. Always remembered it, the music, everything. Thank you for bringing it back to life for me. I will watch it again now with a new outlook, thanks to your great and funny analysis.
Thanks for watching and for your kind words It's one of my favourite movies of all time . The casting ,music, and plot it's brilliant . Definitely watch it again it's such a classic Take care
My favorite actor ever RB
Good Choice
you missed one of my favorite lines when Richard Burton was interrupted by the SS guy with the Luger, and he says "...I just uncovered a plot to assassinate the Fuhrer".
Best film of all time and that’s a stone cold fact
indeed
If possible, "Ice Station Zebra" next, please. Great cold war thriller.
Ok I'll add those to my watch list I haven't seen them yet
@@JonathanEBoyd Best quote in the film is when Patrick MacGoohan after a very calm monologue thumps the table and shouts "get me there!". I think the clip's on TH-cam....
@stevehutchinson5399 quite understandable considering what he had gone through in the previous scene.
Broadsword, calling Danny Boy.. Broadsword calling Danny Boy... 😮😊
Arguably the best line of the Film
Broad Swords calling Danny boy ....Richard Burton is the best
Watching from jamaica 🇯🇲 can't get enough of this Classic my favorite...
such a classic Line from a classic film burton & eastwood both Shine in this movie 1 of my favourites . Thanks for watching
I think this movie and Kelly's Heroes almost came out at the same time.
I think close enough yes
ANTHOLOGY OF MOVIE
Indeed😄
I love lowkey action films like this from the 60s & 70s that were straight up raw with the effects. Check out Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) by John carpenter
Well said and this one is a classic Ok i'll have to ad that film to my list thanks
Smith: "Lots of nice names and addresses!"
one of my favourite quotes from the movie
@@JonathanEBoyd mine, too! Great stuff.
Which Christiansen says it wasn’t necessary or safe for them to know!
Richard Burton is my “favorite” Shakespearean” actor ever !
good choice
The problem with this film is that it is set during the second world war, although helicopters were first built in 1940, they were not used until after the war was over.
The helicopter in this film, was a Korean war era helicopter. These would not have been available when the film was set.
fair enough it's still an enjoyable film though in my opinion
Notice at 2:03, Von Hapen is wearing the Close Combat Clasp in gold, one of Nazi Germany's rarest and most prized decorations. (Only about 650 were awarded.) How a Gestapo officer would have qualified for such a medal is, of course, left unexplained.
interesting
'If any of you utters a word I'll kill you all, is that understood?'
"Alright mate"
Ratatatatat!atat!!
Yeah, me and my mates have been quoting this movie since the days of VHS.
Glad to see a new generation enjoying it!
Glad someone enjoys This film and these quotes as much as I Do I first started Watching it when I was young on VHS It's such a classic
@@JonathanEBoyd You do a good Richard Burton impression too lol
@@escapetheratracenow9883 Lol Thanks
“Hey brother, what’ movie’s that music from?”
Where Eagles Dare,mate!
I love the uniforms
they are pretty quality in my opinion although some have said they aren't accurate I still think they're classic
2:09 he is suspicious since he asked her on her village which was her cover and she messed some minor details
yeah She was too nervous and made too many mistakes . Düsseldorf
@@JonathanEBoyd thanks , great movie seen it first when i was like 5

epic scene great movie :) a classic:)
@@TheBarbahaba absolutely Brilliant Such a classic
Glad this video came up in my feed. You did an excellent job and your commentary and impersonations are outstanding and hilarious! It really is an excellent movie and I have seen it many times. Sir Richard Burton is fantastic and the way he delivers his lines - so matter of fact and I love how you point out he is continuously issuing out orders to everyone. Clint Eastwood is also great and his character is so laconic, and he really is a “proper assassin.” I am going to have to start using that line. Thanks for taking the time to make both these videos honoring such a great movie. Another WW2 movie along the same grain is the Guns of Navarone which has David Niven another fantastic British actor.
thanks for watching and for your kind words it's much appreciated .
It's really my pleasure to cover this film it's one of my all time favorites such a classic , cast .story ,music ,action ,tension , Mystery, Humor .
You couldn't ask for much more from a movie I'll have to check out Guns of Navarone it's been recommended to me countless times take care
Dunno what’s with ppl getting annoyed at your commentary. Maybe the video title makes them expect something else? anyways, I LOVED your commentary. It was like able to watch with a friend! I am finishing the novel right now and can’t wait to watch the movie!!! Have to say I expected Major Smidth to be a bit different. Just because reading the novel I created an image and not knowing richard burton I probably have different reaction. Clint eastwood is fantastic!
Thanks For watching and for your comments .
I think people are annoyed with me because they were expecting a pure movie compilation Without any Commentary which isn't possible because TH-cam will block it for copyright.
Maybe if I had put (commentary) in the title they wouldn't be so annoyed . At the end of the day I'll always annoy some people some will hate it some will like it I did my best & I'm glad I did it.
Many have told me about the novel I'll have to read it 1 day .is it long ? where did you find the book is it on amazon ?
The movie may not be as in-depth as the book but I think you'll still find it enjoyable it's a good ride .
I wish you watched the movie before my video cause I gave away all the best bits but I think it's still will be good fun watching
A classic in my eyes Take care
I've always meant to count Lt. Schaefer's kills in this movie. Would you happen to know, Mr. Boyd?
My favorite WW2 spy movie. The novel was entertaining as well.
I'm not sure I might Have To go back and count someone did leave it in a comment on one of the videos but I haven't checked myself
Indeed one of my favourite movies of all time everyone keeps telling me about the novel I've really got to read it some time
If you find out how many kills let us know thanks
It’s un “ Classico”! Film
Indeed
Thank you so much. You get to watch the condensed version for free.
thanks for Watching such a classic movie one of my favourites
I love the Hollywood silencer turns a gun into an air gun. Fire a real silencer sometime, all it does is reduce the sound from a pistol report to a weaker version.
interesting
This is actually a more realistic noise than the typical zip.
My favorite classic
One of my favourites too
