I strongly disagree. I own both cameras. First the R7. I got so frustrated with it I bought the R8 too. The R7: has significant autofocus issues. The pixel density is so high - 80 Mpix FF equivalent - you almost cannot find lenses that can match the sensor resolution. It also causes noise that is probably the source of the AF issues. You can take good stills with it, but very few are keepers when you do a shoot. It lacks lenses that are fit for it. The R8: MUCH BETTER for stills. Fantastic sensor. Low noise. Excellent AF. With "only" 24 Mpix covering a full frame, the lenses can produce a much sharper image. Because now you can use all the glass and the spacial resolution demands are cut by a factor of four. And what is bonkers: put a RF-S lens on it, the R8 will go in crop mode about 10 Mpix... the IQ in low light is better than the R7! Canon is letting down the R7 by not making top quality RF-S lenses with a wide aperture. The R7 would shine with such a lens. The wider aperture would help AF a lot by putting more light on the sensor. And if it is super sharp, you'd get really good quality stills with a small package. The best lens I have for the R7 is the RF 28mm f/2.8 pancake. It is small, light, very sharp and it can match the sensor resolution. On the R7 it is a wonderful street photography package. That lens is soooo good it is "overqualified" for the R8, meaning that on the R8 this thing is a dream lens too. Here is the thing: use the 24-105 f/4 L USM and you'll see it cannot handle the R7's sensor. Portraits, especially in all but the brightest light, are soft. Put that lens on the R8 body and it shines. If you want to shoot a bird, put the RF 100-400 on the R7 and you'll miss focus a lot. The R8 will nail focus every time. But if the R7 nails it, your bird has a lot more detail and it leaves the R8 way behind. The big thing is that IF. Only 5% are keepers. But you can do stuff with the R7 you won't be able to do with the R8 when it comes to shooting wildlife. For anything else, the R8 wins hands down. Canon, I'm still waiting for these wide super sharp RF-S lenses. Without them, competition is way better (Sony, Fuji, Panasonic) and I cannot recommend the R7 body.
@@VanessaJoy I recently saw Jared's AF test of the R7 (th-cam.com/video/U99GkLDU6Ws/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dpUuH05if4tWLzJf) and he has good results using humongous glass. The same goes for "Wild Alaska" (th-cam.com/video/Y3vXp0HAyrY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8NEOpdtvcdPzmr-t), also using lenses that won't fit in your purse. The R7 needs a lot of light to work well. I made a nice picture of a Heron using the R7 with the small RF-S 18-150 @150 from really far away. The little lens is as sharp as the 24-105 f/4 L, as shown by Chris (th-cam.com/video/sxDr67weTGQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9PdEBTrdn5hLZxdY). The R7's huge pixel density then allows to crop a lot and still have amazing detail. The thing is that these lenses used by Jared and Wild Alaska do not need to be so huge for the R7. If made as RF-S they can be much smaller and that would make the R7 a compelling camera. So far we only have the huge full frame lenses that can more or less satisfy the R7's sensor. That is why the R8 with its full frame sensor is so much better in practice, because of the glass. Only when cropping or far reach is required will the R7 outclass the R8. Great video Vanessa. I own both and I respectfully disagree. I just did my own side by side comparison and for me the R8 is the superior camera for photography. In comparison, the R8 is sharper with better colors, and it doesn’t have the processing lag that the R7 has. I would choose the R7 for videos because of the IS and better battery life.
totally agree with you. the R8 overheats in some video modes as well so althought it doesn't have a recording limit per say, the overheating effectively limits the recording times and the battery life. I wonder if external USB c power supply would work? i've heard it wont', but nothing conclusive yet.
Interesting. I think R7 is for video as it won't overheat while R8 does, and R7 has IBIS which is good for handhold video while R8 does not. R8 is good at still for its full frame sensor which gives better dynamic range and High ISO performance (IBIS is not that important in still). R7 is also good at action for its reach due to crop sensor.

I was thinking about this after you asked the question in your other R8 video about how the 7 and 8 might be backwards. I feel like the R7 is the “entry level professional” camera, and the R8 is the “full frame for enthusiasts” option. Essentially the Pro cameras are the R3,5,6 and 7. The Enthusiast models are the R8 and 10, and the consumer model is the R50. Some might argue where the 7 and 10 fall, this is just my take on it.

The sigma 18-35 mm does not disappoint on the r7. I understand pixel leaping tests show some drawbacks. But I can tell you I have taken some great photos with it.
Great video Vanessa 😃, it’s hard to chose 😅 … the weight of the R7 JPEG is more than the weight of the R8 JPEG on the computer ? The details of the skin is better with the R7 APS C with 32 MP or the R8 FULL FRAME 24 MP? Watching you from Paris france 😁😁😁
After a lot of comparison, I just bought the R7 for a take-anywhere travel camera, . The R8 just seemed like too many things were omitted to get the price down for a full frame. 1 card, no IBIS, no mechanical shutter and the smaller battery sent me to the R7. I really like it so far, although I plan to stick with my 5dMk4 for client work.
hi great to hear your thoughts - as much as I would like the idea of full frame, been on APSC canon for past 9 years, the extra cost on lenses to do it justice is outside my budget and can use my EF lenses with adaptor for R7 - did u say the in body stabilisation is only on images not video for R7?
@@patrickdolan. ah yes!! I clearly didn’t read his whole comment. It’s the R8 that doesn’t have ibis and only digital video stabilization. @johnleighdesigns R7 has it
As a professional cinematographer and photographer, I would disagree a bit. I skipped out on the R5/R5C in favor of the oversampled crop sensor on the R7, as it matches the sensor in the Komodo, C70, and BMPCC6K pro a lot better. It is also the best camera they sell for photographing action, only second to the R3 (which is 6,000 dollars)
Absolutely agree! The R8 would be a perfect EOS R replacement EXCEPT for that crummy LP-e17 battery. For the money, a used EOS R6 mark 1 with its battery, IBIS, ergonomics and dual slots would be better for photogs and run and gun shooters for just a couple hundred bucks. However, I do plan on getting an R8 for long form video where I put it on a tripod and rig it up to a V-mount battery and external recorder.
R8: a lightweight, full frame street beast. Bring two extra batteries, hydration, and your good shoes. Then use it to create TH-cam or instructional videos later. That’s how I see the camera. 😀👍
I got the R6 Mark II. It's a bit more money but it's absolutely worth it! I'd say it's the best mirrorless Canon has right now and definitely the best camera in its class (better than the S5 II and A7IV).
No, it really isn't you have a bias to say that because you just whacked a load of money on it. Outside of the lack of crop in 4k 60, the S5II / S5IIx pretty much blow it away. My bias is that I have shot with Lumix for a long time, but I also shoot Canon (R7) and I come from a video background. From that perspective Lumix cameras are so much better at video, video assist tools and quality of life design choices.
I'm about to get a whole new system. Not sure which format to choose nor brand. Ive had Sony a7 II, Nikon DSLR's, Fuji X-T2 and m43:s. I want a system thats not too heavy to carry around, but Im not willing to give up image quality. Contenders are used (or new) a7 III, used a7R III, new S5 II, New R8, new R7 or a new or used X-T4. Im taking all kinds of photos. Is the R-system something to lean towards, and whats the benfefit of Canon vs the rest? =)
I’ve bought an R8 and have no intention of shooting video with it. It’s an R6 ii without ibis and only one card slot and you save £1000. The R7 is great for sport/wildlife with the extra reach but I’ll take full frame over crop all day long.
Looking to buy a camera primalry will be needed for shooting merch and short videos. I need sharp image quality and crisp videos. Good facial tracking Recommended action 1500-1700 max
I dont see the R8 as being only/mainly for video. It has good video specs just because it can. The main advantage is the small size, full frame sensor and awesome AF. The things it is missing e.g. ibis, bigger battery are so most pros will choose a more expensive camera.
IBIS that also turn off the IS of the lens is one of the reason why I decided to get R8 instead of R7. I don't know about other people but if I will use R7/R8 for video, I will surely use a ultra wide lens minimum of 24mm and that wobble issue of IBIS affect the wide lens. The fact that lens IS cannot be use while IBIS is off is big no no for me.
R7 an APS-C Flagship? I am dying with laughter right now. Add $2000 worth of features and it would be a flagship I would want and buy. Instead I waited for R7 specs release then bought an R3 (but I still want more reach).
@airsoftgamer667 Yes, the R7 is the flagship APS-C camera for Canon. The R8 has vastly superior image quality though and better autofocus. The R7 has IBIS and dual card slots which the R8 lacks.
@@cooloox For my use, high speed airplanes and action, the tiny buffer, rolling shutter, and lack of battery grip, weather sealing or hi-res viewfinder meant it did not meet my requirements. The R7 may be Canon's top APS-C for now ... but a flagship, it is not.
I think you have this a bit flop-flopped (respectfully). The R7 is a better video camera. It's also a better camera for wildlife photography. The R8 does have the typical benefits of a full frame sensor. But as a professional videographer DoF and low light are not always winning factors for me. Redundancy is. - R7 has dual card slots - Oversampled from a 7k area - IBIS - Better battery life Film has largley been shot on super 35mm for years (APS-C). While there it is true a full frame sensor will produce shallower DoF and better low light. People put too much stock in this alone. In practice I've shot with many different sized sensors. It's one half choosing the right tool for the job and one half realising that the camera is just one cog in the production process. Great results can be produced on practically every modern sensor from MFT to FF and beyond.
I guess it depends on what level video you’re shooting, amateur/beginner the R8 is great… but I feel like the second you start needing better battery life and IBIS and higher resolution and dual card slots, you’re into a higher end camera overall. It’s the lack of IBIS in the r8 that to me, it makes it not good for photography because we tend to need to shoot at slower shutter speeds, and that can drastically affect the blurriness and motion blur of the image versus when you’re shooting for video it’s not affecting the imagery as much, especially since your shutter speed is usually double your frame rate you’re not typically going lower than a 60th of a second anyway.
I love my R8... I may use it more than my R6 because it's so comfortable in my hands, and I have an RP sitting in my dry cabinet so I have plenty of batteries. The R6 II just wasn't worth the extra money for me as a backup, which is what I initially bought it for.
This is great - and they are 2 cameras I am looking at. My local photo specialist thought the R8 better for portraits etc with the FF sensor and definitely better for depth of field. The R7 looked better for wildlife and sports with its fast focus and shutter times etc. I preferred the R7 in my hand and I like the joystick, but it's probably typical that the R8 would be the 'right' one for me. More research needed. Thanks for another wonderful video.
FF sensor is nice BUT depth of field has nothing to do with the camera... that's the lens. I'd personally go with the R7 if I were you. I shot on an APS-C sensor professionally for years
Thanks for the video. The R7 has IBIS and Clog 3, both features which videographers appreciate and the R8 hasn't either. The R8 seems to be aimed a people wanting to "upgrade" to FF. It's paired with a poor kit lens, whereas the R7s 18 - 150 mm is versatile and surprisingly sharp. I wouldn't agree that the R7 is intended for photographers and the R8 for videographers.
Stopped watching your video when you've said the R7 has a 30 minute recording limit. I own this camera and has no recording limit that I know of. Or I must be dreaming recording with it for hours in 4K 60....
@@VanessaJoy I did. I get it. It's sponsored video. It's all good. I also make mistakes in researching subjects but this was too much. Too many. I just couldn't hold it. I appreciate the quality of your videos and your cadence and tone. It's all good.
The R7 is a semi-profesional HYBRID camera that is performing well for photos and for videos. It's not the best and it doesn't match up to the R5 but it's very close. The R8 on the other hand is a video centric camera with a twist: very small batteries + overheating YES, the R8 does overheat. Even Canon is posting the expected runtimes at 60 minutes in 4K and 2h in other modes. There is a very interesting video made by Josh Sattin where he provides a lot of information and the sources about the R8. There is also a comparison between the R8 and R7 and us who own it we know already, the R7 has a finer 4K image than the R8 due to the 7K oversampled 4K rather than 6K oversampled 4K but the smaller sensor makes this difference almost imperceivable. Anyway, the R8 is not better than the R7 at any specific point. It's just a cheap and light full frame option for enthusiast and creators who don't take a lot of stills and don't want to carry out bigger and heavier gear.
Much has been made of the fact the R8 doesn’t have IBIS. Well I’ve never had a camera with IBIS and cope ok thanks, would I be right in thinking those who can’t shoot without IBIS don’t know what they’re doing?
I'm an upgrader from my beloved 7D Mark II (for me the Canon APS-C queen ever) to the R7 using all my EF prime lenses with it. R7 is great camera both for stills and video. And for Vlogging I use my EF-S 10-18 IS STM. All in all the R7 is a great camera.
@@AdityaShakti-nn4mo When I bought the R7 the EF-EOS-R mount adapter was included. Meanwhile I'm using the the EF-EOS R mount adapter with the control ring (give my EF lenses this neat functionality) and/or the adapter with the CPL or ND filter if needed. Works perfectly and without any issues at all my Canon lenses (I'm always use Canon gear!)😄
This is kind of a bad video. This camera is for people who want a full frame camera with over 20mp with a decent auto focus. While not paying an arm and a leg. As a photographer and film maker, I would never buy this camera just for video. Did you even mention the sensor sizes? I might have missed the part where you were logical. There are so many cameras better for video than this.
this is kind of a bad comment. This video isn’t for people overall looking for the best video option, or a review of either camera, it’s comparing two cameras. As a photogrpaher and human being, I wouldn’t talk to people like you do. Did you even bother to say hello? I must’ve missed the part where you weren’t a dick so I guess we’re even 🤷🏻♀️
Personally as someone who does zero video, I wouldn't purchase either of them. The R8 is too small, no mechanical shutter, and puny battery (with no grip available) takes it out as a full frame option. The R7 is strictly for wildlife and sport shooters on a budget, which I am not one of. Way too high a pixel density on too small a sensor. I would still get the original R6 over either of these for about the same price used.
Seriously was tempted to buy into Canon with the R8 release. However, the small battery was a deal breaker. The Cripple Hammer strikes again. All full frame cameras should have bigger batteries than crop sensor cameras. Just doesn't make sense to me.
buy an RP battery grip and put it on the R8, you get double the battery life and a vertical shutter. Maybe can use an external USB c power pack as well? which would be smaller
@@VanessaJoy I’ll check into it. I want to try out that Canon AF lol. I love my Fuji system but the AF is still behind the competition, even the flagships and newest bodies. So frustrating. 6D MkII was my first full frame camera a few years ago and actually kinda miss it. Y’all gonna turn me back to Canon before too long lol. I’ll know for sure after I shoot my first wedding this weekend with the Fuji bodies. That will be the true test for me.
I think thats because the RX or XD series (eg R7 or 7D ii) cameras are more pro, hence the dual card slots. The X0D series (eg 90D) is for enthusiasts, hence only one card slot.
The EOS R7 is not a worthy successor to the 7D mark II, it's making me want to go to Fuji and buy an H2s. With the high prices of the R3 (which would be the most logical option to make the leap to the mirrorless system) and the R optics, I don't see why to continue with Canon. I don't find the R8 interesting because I'm just a photographer and not a videographer. PS: Vanessa I love you!!! ❤️
As a longtime Fuji shooter, their autofocus is improved greatly but still isn’t there. On paper, this makes perfect sense, as I went through the same logic process. In reality, if you read bird and wild forums, many people who have tried the X-H2s have recommended against it for fast focus photography.

I think if you’re doing hybrid the r7 is a solid choice over the r8 for sure
R7 has the same sensor but it's not a stacked sensor like the R3. Not really a good comparison
Yeah I think the R6 would be a great choice like you said
whats v mount battery?
R8: a lightweight, full frame street beast. Bring two extra batteries, hydration, and your good shoes. Then use it to create TH-cam or instructional videos later. That’s how I see the camera. 😀👍
Nice!
I just got that camera in my hands today finally!
Good facial tracking
Recommended action
1500-1700 max
Good information I was seeing which of theses cameras would be a good second camera for the canon r6 mark II🤔
Nice!
I dont see the R8 as being only/mainly for video. It has good video specs just because it can. The main advantage is the small size, full frame sensor and awesome AF. The things it is missing e.g. ibis, bigger battery are so most pros will choose a more expensive camera.
yeah i think you're right
IBIS that also turn off the IS of the lens is one of the reason why I decided to get R8 instead of R7.
I don't know about other people but if I will use R7/R8 for video, I will surely use a ultra wide lens minimum of 24mm and that wobble issue of IBIS affect the wide lens.
The fact that lens IS cannot be use while IBIS is off is big no no for me.
Yes, isn’t the R8 supposed to be an «entry level» full frame RF while the R7 is supposed to be an APS-C flagship?
R7 an APS-C Flagship? I am dying with laughter right now. Add $2000 worth of features and it would be a flagship I would want and buy. Instead I waited for R7 specs release then bought an R3 (but I still want more reach).
@@C6v1999t is the flagship APS-C camera for Canon. Get over yourself. Aside from build quality, it kills the 7D Mk II in every way.
@@C6v1999 what a terrible take.
I think you have this a bit flop-flopped (respectfully). The R7 is a better video camera. It's also a better camera for wildlife photography. The R8 does have the typical benefits of a full frame sensor. But as a professional videographer DoF and low light are not always winning factors for me. Redundancy is.
- R7 has dual card slots
- Oversampled from a 7k area
- IBIS
- Better battery life
Film has largley been shot on super 35mm for years (APS-C).
It’s the lack of IBIS in the r8 that to me, it makes it not good for photography because we tend to need to shoot at slower shutter speeds, and that can drastically affect the blurriness and motion blur of the image versus when you’re shooting for video it’s not affecting the imagery as much, especially since your shutter speed is usually double your frame rate you’re not typically going lower than a 60th of a second anyway.
informative video on the R8 keen on it in terms of 4k good and useful with 65mmm lens on it for stills work.
Glad you liked it ☺️
I love my R8... I may use it more than my R6 because it's so comfortable in my hands, and I have an RP sitting in my dry cabinet so I have plenty of batteries. The R6 II just wasn't worth the extra money for me as a backup, which is what I initially bought it for.
Glad you love it!
Any battery problems for r8
Great points!
R8 has C-log 3. Check your facts
@@GustavsNikitins thanks for the correction
Stopped watching your video when you've said the R7 has a 30 minute recording limit. I own this camera and has no recording limit that I know of. Or I must be dreaming recording with it for hours in 4K 60....

@@VanessaJoy I did. I get it. It's sponsored video. It's all good. I also make mistakes in researching subjects but this was too much. Too many. I just couldn't hold it. I appreciate the quality of your videos and your cadence and tone. It's all good.
What about the R10?
Here ya go: are these PRO or CONSUMER cameras? | Canon R7 vs R10
th-cam.com/video/xdvOKSpsC2A/w-d-xo.html
I thought you stopped watching?
@@VanessaJoy Ahh you got me. I told a lie. Just like in this video :))
I am a beginner kindly suggest r7 or r8. R8 has any battery isssues?
The R7 doesn't have a 30 min recording limit... Most all of the features that the r8 has the r7 can do...
Corrected in pinned comment. Thanks!
Good choice!
Which adapter do z
you use ?
@@AdityaShakti-nn4mo When I bought the R7 the EF-EOS-R mount adapter was included. Meanwhile I'm using the the EF-EOS R mount adapter with the control ring (give my EF lenses this neat functionality) and/or the adapter with the CPL or ND filter if needed. Works perfectly and without any issues at all my Canon lenses (I'm always use Canon gear!)😄
@@hindermath will this adapter also work with all canon full frame cameras ?
@@AdityaShakti-nn4mo yes, this adapters works also with my EOS RP FullFrame body
Would love to shoot on a full frame over crop sensor been shooting a crop sensor for 15 years lol 😂 XSI,50D,70D x 2 Canon only of course 😊
Nice!!
I must’ve missed the part where you weren’t a dick so I guess we’re even 🤷🏻♀️
@@VanessaJoy Right then.
Apparently the Canon gods get their naming advice from Yoda; confusing, it is not 😅
lol
Personally as someone who does zero video, I wouldn't purchase either of them. The R8 is too small, no mechanical shutter, and puny battery (with no grip available) takes it out as a full frame option. The R7 is strictly for wildlife and sport shooters on a budget, which I am not one of. Way too high a pixel density on too small a sensor. I would still get the original R6 over either of these for about the same price used.
Used is such a great idea. I bought so much of my gear used
Give me a name of a better crop camera in this price range so I can buy it then.
I have the R3 and R7, And yes R7 is for stills especially wildlife;)
Nice!
Maybe can use an external USB c power pack as well? which would be smaller
the smaller battery does confuse me too - but the battery grip is a good solution if you think the rest of the camera is good for you.
@@southbridgeforestHOA so the RP grip fits the R8?
@@VanessaJoy I’ll check into it. I want to try out that Canon AF lol. I love my Fuji system but the AF is still behind the competition, even the flagships and newest bodies. So frustrating. 6D MkII was my first full frame camera a few years ago and actually kinda miss it. Y’all gonna turn me back to Canon before too long lol. I’ll know for sure after I shoot my first wedding this weekend with the Fuji bodies. That will be the true test for me.
@@JET-Photo yes th-cam.com/video/aIf66kEARC4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUNY2Fub24gcjggZ3JpcA%3D%3D
I’m confused as to why Canon didn’t use the similar numbering system as the EF cameras. The R7 should have been called the R70.
I think thats because the RX or XD series (eg R7 or 7D ii) cameras are more pro, hence the dual card slots. The X0D series (eg 90D) is for enthusiasts, hence only one card slot.
The double digit (90D, 80D, etc) are replaced by the R10, the R7 is higher in the lineup
I have no idea 😂
@@orloaguilar I guess I was thinking of the sensors size rather that performance.😬
I'm not even a Canon guy but I just watched the video for 2 reasons: 1- You are a Gorgeous photographer 2- You are a Super Beautiful photographer! 😍❤🥰
Aw thanks 😊
Pixel peeping
R8 ftw
The EOS R7 is not a worthy successor to the 7D mark II, it's making me want to go to Fuji and buy an H2s. With the high prices of the R3 (which would be the most logical option to make the leap to the mirrorless system) and the R optics, I don't see why to continue with Canon. I don't find the R8 interesting because I'm just a photographer and not a videographer. PS: Vanessa I love you!!! ❤️
Hmmm coming from a 7D I feel like the R7 would be a good next camera so interesting you didn’t think so. Love you too!
As a longtime Fuji shooter, their autofocus is improved greatly but still isn’t there. On paper, this makes perfect sense, as I went through the same logic process. In reality, if you read bird and wild forums, many people who have tried the X-H2s have recommended against it for fast focus photography.
that canon cripple hammer.
Which?
@@VanessaJoy the R8 with LPE17 battery. They could have made a mini R6ii with LPE6 battery and remove some features to keep the R8 down. But they put in the one thing most people complained about in the RP, the battery.
Interesting thoughts!

The sigma 18-35 mm does not disappoint on the r7. I understand pixel leaping tests show some drawbacks. But I can tell you I have taken some great photos with it.
