    Excellent comparison.
    I have R7+RF 100-500mm and R6mkII+RF 800mm f/11.
I mostly use the R7 combo. I shoot mostly birds.
The R6mkII is outstanding in low light.
Note: The R8 has the same sensor and AF as the R6mkII

Hey I hope you are doing well, I am totally new to photography but I was just using my phone. I love landscape, animals and all other nature photography and I like to make zoomed 4k 60fps videos of animals. After a lot of research I finalized R7 and R8 for my budget and as my first camera. As a beginner to a professional before spending money I just want to ask you what will be the best camera for me to do all that I mentioned above.

I've been debating between these two cameras for weeks now and this is the best, most helpful video I've found, thank you so much!! Your comparisons helped me finally settle on the R8, as I especially love theater & concert photography and portraits, so the better focus and low-light performance on the R8 far outweigh some of its weaknesses compared to the R7 for me personally. Thank you again so much, off to get my new R8!! :))

Great video, I think this will finalize many people's decision on which to go with. I do have one question... have encountered any overheating with R8 while in stills mode? I see a lot of videos and reddit posts about people just navigating through the menu or setting up the camera and it goes into overheat mode. Keep up the great job. Enjoying the thorough reviews.

Yes, I forgot to mention this in this video but I talked about it in my previous one (R6 vs R8).
I've seen the overheat indicator appearing while working in photo mode, but it never increased beyond two bars, so the camera never shut down because of overheathing while taking still pictures. But it is also true that I don't live in the warmest of countries.

They all have the same bitrate, so 1 minute in 4K 25p 8-bit is approximately 850MB.
The bitrate in 4K 25p 10-bit (C-Log, HDR PQ) is higher, so one minute should be around 1.2GB.

But i have a question for you, which one is the better combo for travel and sport photography the sony a7iv with the tamron 70-180 or the canon r6 with the EF 70-200 is ii (adapted)? Which one is better for fast action autofocus ?

Good question, but I'm not sure I can give you a precise answer because I never tested the Tamron 70-180, so I don't know how fast the AF motor is on that lens.
I know that the EF 70-200mm with the adapter works very well on EOS R cameras, so it should be fast on the R6 too.

Matthew thank you for these excellent reviews. You have clearly presented the tradeoffs of the R7, compared to the R8. Most reviewers don't highlight these tradeoffs as clearly as you have.
Concerning overheating in movie mode, I read that changing the picture RAW setting from RAW to CRAW (using the compressed RAW setting) decreases heat and increases the recording time before the heat warning kicks in. I wonder if turning off RAW and using jpg only would increase it even more? Can you test this?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

Thank you for the nice comment.
Unfortunately, I don't have the R8 with me anymore so I can't double check this, but I don't see why the RAW setting would have any influence in video mode, unless it's some kind of weird software glitch.

Hello! I am a little late for the party, but i would like to know your input.
I am looking to get a camera to start me up on photography. My objective would be to mostly document my travels, so landscapes and maybe pictures of me and my partner in those places by using a tripod. I would also be using it to take pictures of animals, mostly house animals, like cats, dogs and bunnies.
I have very little knowledge on cameras and photography. I really want to start studying and get into it a bit more.
So I am split between these two. They are very similar in price, but the R7 looks like, the more newbie friendly with its IBIS, but on the other hand the R8 seems to have the most potential and picture quality?
Which one do you think it would be better for someone new?
    Thank you !

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for asking!
To be honest, both are great to start with, but the R7 has some practical advantages, like backing up your shots on the second card while you're travelling, and the better battery life which means you don't need to bring too many spares with you. For what you intend to do, the R7 will cover your needs just fine, plenty of quality for landscapes, and you can get a kit with the 18-150mm which will allow you to do a bit of verything. Then you may want to invest on fast prime lens later on to have better bokeh when taking portraits, or if you find yourself working in low light more.

Excellent video and the most comprehensive comparison of R7 vs R8 i've seen. Did the AF comparison use EFCS in both cameras?
After owning the R7 for a year i can verify indeed that AF performance for stills in mechanical shutter is lower than R6 and off course also lower than R5 (meaning, when comparing side by side this is immediately noticeable). Though R7 was initially sold as an upgrade for 7D owners (fast stills shooting, wild life, etc), seems like it is a video beast rather than stills. R8 also seems like an excellent option for videographers (both non-professional and professional with an external recorder). Overall after years of disappointments, canon is being competitive and releasing very interesting products.

I have a M50 MKII and looking for a replacement R7 or R8, I am taking pictures of ballroom dancing competitions and struggle with noise since venues tend to be too dark.
For example with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 with a Metabones Speedbooster it is f2.0 1/250sec and ISO gets to 12800.
Will the R7 make enough difference in noise?
I think about getting the R7 due to IBIS, dual SD card, battery capacity and with ASPC + Speedbooster I can go to f2.0 and with an R8 that is not possible.

This is an excellent and highly professional review and as an owner of both I'd back what Mathieu is saying. I would add that anyone thinking of getting on of these two could do worse than see what Duade Paton has said on this subject and he's said enough that Canon even got in touch with him. From Day 1 Canon told us/sold us that the r7 had the 'same AF as the r3' and this is simply untrue. The r7 AF jumps around and for no reason either, the R8 is a LOT better in this regard, I've run them side by side and can vouch for it. Look up the sensor read out speeds for both and that says a lot as well. Thanks 👍

To be fair, Canon never said that the autofocus in the R7 was the same as the R3. They said it was "based on" the R3. The R7 autofocus is actually quite good, EXCEPT it tends to wander a bit if you hold your finger on the button when photographing a stationary subject.

What I find interesting is that word spreads around the world that the R7 is for wildlife and the focus on tracking loses to the R8. Another point is this Ibis, so far I see more marketing than real utility, the R8 without Ibis seems almost identical to me. The R7 for me from the videos I watched is a 90D in disguise that little by little we will discover its true identity. I read many complaints about the mechanical shutter, one said that out of every 10 photos only 1 had focus and with luck! For me, the essential thing in a camera is the focus, 300 photos per second is no use, a battery that lasts 300 hours, 10 card slots if 99% of the photos in motion do not have focus, especially a camera that is said to be for wildlife. Thanks for the video!

I think the R7 has a lot of potential, and in some situations like small birds on branches etc, it performs really well.
To be honest, I'm still surprised it doesn't match the other EOS R cameras with faster action like birds in flight, all the other ones I've tested behave in the same extact way. Perhaps it's just not as powerful as the other models when it comes to AF calculations/s, or something like that.

Whoever claimed a 10% focus rate should schedule a service check. I use my R7 every day, and this has not been my experience. With the mechanical shutter, shutter shock may be an issue, due to the lightness of the body. But the first curtain electronic and electronic shutters avoid even this slight loss of sharpness. And even if you prefer the mechanical shutter, a 10% keeper rate strikes me as likely hyperbole. I use my R7 almost exclusively for birds and wildlife, with the RF100-500 living on the camera 95% of the time. And I can say that I've never had so much fun with a camera. The image quality from this combination is simply stunning.

Currently have the R7 but I'm looking to upgrade for better iso performance. That battery difference is a dealbreaker. I have nearly 10 LP-E6/LP-E6N/LP-E6NH batteries from past cameras, many of them being the original canon part. I'm not willing to replace them all at $60 ea, so I'm thinking the R6 (only 20MP?), or more ideally the R5 (higher megapixel) would be the better direction to go. Why would they switch to a 1040mAh point-n-shoot battery in a full-frame camera? Just so they could fit a SD slot next to it?

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

No, most likley because the body is smaller and it's roughly the same of the previous EOS RP camera, so fitting a larger battery would have force Canon to update the design somehow.
