  • Part 1: In this episode, we take on a new project...a 2nd Gen 2007 Toyota Tacoma. Originally equipped with a 4 cyl/5 speed transmission, it was a fairly bare truck. The owner began modifications almost on day one when the truck came home. Currently it is equipped with a supercharger with meth injection. Lots of upgrades along the way.
However, the 4 banger still did not meet the owners expectations for horsepower. Follow along as we remove the original power train and prep the truck for its new engine...an all aluminum 5.3...the L33 with Tremec TKX 5 speed transmission. The owner sold the original motor. The new owner put a turbocharger on it and promptly trashed the engine in a short time. The Tacoma is almost finished. I’ve had to change direction and/or redo several things multiple times so there are minimal videos of its progress. But, it should be finished very soon and a more comprehensive video will be made showing how we did it. I’m waiting until everything works like it should before putting anything out.

Hey, got you off the forums! Great vid. You wouldn't happen to know anyone selling the URD supercharger system for the 2TR would u?

No, I do not know. But, the forums would be a good place to ask about it. At the time the Tacoma came to me, it was 1 of 2 that had that particular supercharger. I believe some changes had been made to it since. Depending on the power level you want, (this application was ~225 to the tire) the supercharger with associated things to make it run good gets very expensive real quick!

@@laurencevillegarage Thanks for the update! Is that setup available to buy somewhere? I believe you were using the Magnussen and I did contact LCE who say they haven't given up on the 2TR yet and are hopeful to develop this platform. The Rotrex setup on the URD is prone to imploding but I needed more power really fast and that still seems like the most complete setup out there even though it's "out of stock". Still looking hard

What if you have A 4X4. How would you keep that?

If the truck were a 4x4, yes I would keep it 4x4…if that is what you are asking.

Would the rear end handle a stock 5.3 I have a taco prerunner 4 cyl with the 5 speed

It all depends on how you drive it. I would say "yes" it can handle a stock 5.3 as long as you are not doing 4000 rpm launches and power shifting. Driving it "normal" and just getting on it I believe you will be just fine. If it does decide to spit out an axle or the gears, then obviously an upgrade is in order.

What are the plans for the old engine? I have a 2008 and wanted to put a super charger on it. Mine has the automatic trans which is a real let down but it is reliable.

The "old" engine was put up for sale and sold in a matter of hours. The supercharger was an experimental unit and went back to the manufacturer. With t he supercharger, meth injection and some other fancy parts put down about 225 to the tire. Not too bad for a lowly 4 banger. But, if you had to pay out for the supercharger, computer to run it all and all the odds and ends...you might want to rethink that. It was expensive. I'm not knocking going that route, superchargers, turbos, engine swaps are all cool and to each his own. Any route you go can be pricey, but, for the buck spent, weigh it out against all your options.

Just liked and subscribed. Looking forward to watching the build. I myself was looking to do this exact build but with a 6th gen Camaro LT1 engine and 6 speed transmission.
