What you have to remember is the balista is basically firing either a large stone, or a gigantic spear with a metal point, with the point alone weighing several tonnes. Either of those munitions if they land a direct hit, would have the required force to pluck a heli from the air. This is due to the weight issue associated with flight. The heavier you are, the greater force is needed to get you off the ground, eventually you hit a ratio where it just becomes impossible, even with mechanical assistance. As such, all flying vehicles must be built lightweight, but this also makes them incredibly flimsy, so any kind of weapon that even has a hope in hell of landing a hit, and is larger than a small arms weapon, is basically a threat, and thus can be termed an AA (Anti Air) weapon. Flying vehicles like helicopters and planes, rely less on armour, and more on speed and manoeuvrability to keep themselves alive
For the U.S. attack helicopters are not usually deployed in areas were we don't already have air superiority also most pilots have quick reaction times they might be able to dodge some large projectiles I personally think they should have used tanks like Abrams no catapult is making a dent in that armor

A trebuchet or catapult could easily take down a helicopter. Firearms have to be reloaded and can fail and if either or both of those things happen when surrounded by a large attacking force you can easily be taken out. Arrows alone would've significantly leveled the playing field since they can easily penetrate even Kevlar if constructed properly. Getting cocky could've easily gotten them all killed

A trebuchet or catapult could easily take down a helicopter. Firearms have to be reloaded and can fail and if either or both of those things happen when surrounded by a large attacking force you can easily be taken out. Arrows alone would've significantly leveled the playing field since they can easily penetrate even Kevlar if constructed properly.
