    • @nickbrown6457
      @nickbrown6457 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      But the way amortisation works in a business (the practice of spreading an intangible asset's cost over that asset's useful life), if the car is really capable (which I think it is from videos I've seen) and lasts for 30 years, then surely it's a really great investment for a farm, even at £81k? The worry is will it last 30 years with all those electrics to go wrong? Also, in truth, to use as a farm run-around workhorse, wouldn't you likely choose a lower spec model, closer to £50k?

    • @garethleyshon1393

      @@nickbrown6457 The problem, is that like all modern cars they are full of computers and sensors. Nothing wrong with that, but are they going to be available in 10, 20, 30 Years? Just seems that JLR are targeting the same end of the market with all their products. Surely they have the luxury off-road covered with Range Rover. That leaves Land Rover to cover the workhorse end of the market. And if there isn't one then they didn't need a new vehicle otherwise they are going to cannibalise their own sales.

    • @SimonvanderWorp
      @SimonvanderWorp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @andrewnorris5415 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You sound like you make sense. But I disagree. You miss they are going where the vast majority of the money is, using the defender brand to bring in extra sales. They never "lose" sales, just some switching - with extra sales from elsewhere in the key selling market segment.

      I saw on a 4x4 off-road youTube that for true off-roading in out of the way places, air suspension creates a risk if it fails, and basic steel springs are far more reliable. This new defender only has 18” wheels, whereas there are more off-road tyres for 16” wheels! Apparently to fit a front winch after your Defender is built, is next to impossible without damage to the plastic front.
      The rough & ready basic original Series or Defender Land Rovers were more adaptable to a hard life without the worry of damaging it.
      I’d choose a Landcruiser or Jeep Wagoner Rubicon for a robust 4x4 off-roader. Unless its only to be used on the school run where I guess most new Defenders will end up.

Buy the “Farmer” version with plastic floors and full leather seats plus all the off toad terrain technology and an “Urban” spec’ with the luxury of a Discovery 5 in a better looking package and still with the off road capability. Excellent and informative as always. The pricing of the Defender was curious when they first came out and the sudden changing of engines for MY21 has added to the confusion. You can’t help comparing to a Discovery Commercial - which has the 6 pot diesel and even well specc’d comes in way under the 110 Defender - and I believe they’re much the same chassis and air suspension. Yes the Defender has some nice practicality features as well as some silly form over function items such as that side mounted useless stowage bin (part of an unnecessary option pack fortunately) but many of my farmer friends are eschewing the Defender in favour of a Discovery, which does seem to make sense.
