@MrMobile, I'm so glad I watched this BEFORE preordering the Fold 5! You just saved me making a HUGE mistake. After 9 months of owning a Fold 4, Samsung was unable to repair it (after 3 times I asked for my money back), and after 3 weeks, low and behold they sent me $1,799.99. I'm shocked they did, but also very happy to be done with them.
Let's hope the next foldable contender gives us something we deserve.
Sending this from a Moto Razr Plus 2023.

What exactly went wrong with your Fold 4

    • @byersbw
      @byersbw ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@22b_gc8 The 2 issues I had were: the inner screen protector was peeling off, and the outer screen was scratched to hell. Keep in mind that I bought Samsung care from day 1. I called Care (assuming I'd have to pay a deductible due to scratching the front screen), but they told me that due to the inner screen issue, they'd repair the whole thing for free.
Shipped it to them the first time. They sent it back the same day they received it "repaired". Nope. They replaced the screen protector, but damaged the inner screen by either dropping a screwdriver on it, or something with a tip as there was a dimple on it that wasn't there before me sending it in. They also replaced the entire phone housing, and camera lenses, but did not fix the outer screen.
The 2nd time I shipped it, they again sent it back the same day they received it, but this time they only replaced some internal antenna. They did not fix either the outer or inner screens.
The 3rd time I called several times to ask if it would actually get fixed this time, or if they could just send me a new phone. A week after they received it, they told me it was now out of warranty due to the scratches on the screen.
I tweeted out to Samsung Mobile USA, and LTT, and a day later, called in, spoke to a manager, and all of a sudden I was offered a full refund. It was promised within 3-5 business days, but actually took 3 weeks, but they did indeed send me my money via Citi Bank.
I can't wait for Samsung to have a proper competitor here in the States. Google lame 1st attempt is a joke, though at least it's an attempt. Maybe by the 3rd or 4th iteration, it might be worth buying. But until then, I'll stay on my Moto or iPhone, or maybe even a Note 13, eh hmh. I mean S23 Ultra. Samsung knows how to make phones, but not folding ones that hold up... Yet.

@@byersbw I can see how that must have been super frustrating and Samsung customer service leaves a lot to be desired, but it sounds like the only issue that the phone had originally was that the screen protector was peeling? Everything after that happened due to Samsung repair center screwing up. So it doesn't seem fair to say that "Samsung knows how to make phones, but not folding ones that hold up" based on that. For what it's worth, I've had my Fold 3 for almost 2 years and I also only had an issue with the inner screen protector peeling off. Fortunately, I have a Samsung repair center in my city where I can just bring in the phone and have the inner screen protector replaced within 1 hour. So it's not major issue for me to have it replaced 1-2 times a year. Besides that, the phone is working perfectly with no issues.

Love the foldable coverage! I've gotta agree about Samsung foldables having an issue with their screen protectors. @@diablo4624 Based off what he says about the 5's hinges, I'm hoping that puts less pressure on the installed protectors. The protector on my Flip 4 started coming off after just a few months. In theory I could have gotten a free new Samsung one, if only they were in stock and somewhere within 50 miles of me (near Baltimore) was authorized to put them on. I got such a run-around from the two authorized repair centers that I gave up and put a third party one on myself, and ironically it's lasted better than the original. That aside, lack of dust protection on the new ones makes them a no-go for me. Something has gotten into my 4's hinge and now it won't lay flat at all, it opens to maybe 170 degrees, which is really annoying. So probably back to slab phones for me for my next one, sadly, as I do like the flip form factor.

I've been looking forward to this particular initial review for a while.. it was your review of the Galaxy Fold 3 that prompted me to give foldables a try. And, for the most part, the benefits of using a foldable, along with the screen issues, were borne out. I DID end up replacing the inner screen. For free (always get Samsung's extra coverage). Since I am not a frequent picture-taker, the deficiencies of the camera impacted me less.

I've been using Fold 4 for almost a year now and it's the best phone I've ever used. However, I don't get the praises about the Flex mode. It's strange, it's awkward, typing on it isn't that good, and it kinda breaks the big screen experience. It makes much more sense to get a case with a kickstand (I've got the Samsung's official one) and to be able to prop up the entire display. Works great for consuming content or some simple work, when paired with a BT keyboard.

Each mode has its uses. I admit that I haven't found Flex Mode as useful in as many situations as I'd like, but as someone who doesn't like to use a case, it's very handy in the situation I mentioned (watching video on airplane tray tables) and similar.

Flex Mode and several other Galaxy Fold praised software may be useful for a niche user group but for many, they are not important. For example, I never use flex mode as it is pointless for my use especially unlike the Pixel Fold the aspect ratio is poor meaning cropping on video. Also, more than two apps open on an eight-inch screen may be tolerable for youngsters but as you get older you buy a fold for larger text on a bigger display! So the much-hyped software functionality of the Galaxy Fold versus rivals seems to get overplayed by a minority techie subset.

I'm glad they're getting better hinges. But I just traded my Fold4 for an S23 Ultra. I had the Fold4 since launch and I've loved it. Still think foldables are the future, but the hinge's durability is an issue. I had issues with the glue melting and causing the phone no longer to open fully. Samsung refused to cover it under warranty calling it "cosmetic" so I had to pay to go through Care+. Then my replacement had issues which got replaced and my third unit started getting a weird squeaky hinge issue after just 2 weeks of usage. So I just can't justify staying with a device that has durability issues like this when Samsung won't stand by their own $1800 product. I'll miss it a lot, but the big display and built in S-pen on the S23 Ultra should help ease that pain. Plus I get a better battery and camera system.
I'll be back to the Fold when Samsung's warranty service gets better, the phone finally has dust resistance, the hinge is proven to be more durable, and the outer display is a tad bit wider.

Thanks for another great video Michael! I have to say that this video just continues to reinforce my position that these phones aren't for me. If one were given to me or I could buy one for half the price, it would be a different story, but I cannot justify dropping this amount of money on them. For me, the biggest problem is the durability. Yes, I hear you that it's far better then some would have you believe, but given just the stories you tell, I don't think I'd want these phones without a 3-4 year, full inner screen warranty. More than that though, the poor battery life at shipping implies that I'll be REALLY suffering after 2 years and given that the cameras are basically 2 years old and weren't top of the market when they were new, I just get even more worried about buyer's remorse.
Bottom line for me, I think these phones are best for people who are more flush with cash than I am, and feel the need to update phones every 1-2 years.
Thanks again for a great video, and I look forward to the next one!
    P.S.
Speaking of expensive devices I can't justify buying, you need to stop wearing the Marq Captain... I am seriously jealous of how good that thing looks and every time I see it, those feelings come right back to the surface!

On ya’ Micheal much appreciated as always for your hard work. I’ve been sitting on the flip / fold fence since the first Samsung Gen 1 fold and not convinced yet, although the larger front display is finally here on the flip 5 I am just not enticed to leap off that fence. Samsung just seem to be too relaxed with their competition hot on their heels and is why I’ll enter the flip / fold world elsewhere most likely with Motorola’s razr plus.

Michael, you seem the perfect person to ask this question to: Do you see the a flush folding phone as a design flaw? The reason I ask is the V-shape on the Fold 4 seems perfect for letting dust pass through so nothing gets trapped inside. The displays folding shut flush seemed asking for trouble if something gets caught inside.

I'm using a flip 3 and I threw away the factory screen protector within a week of buying it. I'm currently using ringke screen protector that I installed myself to replace the factory protector. Check out Honor V Fold. That thing is beyond incredible. Only 8mm thick when closed, yet has 5000 mAh battery thanks to new battery technology. Also has 20:9 cover display, so can be used when unfolded like a normal phone. Sadly it is only released in China at the moment, but it should be possible to import. Probably the best foldable out there. I don't like that Samsung has decreased battery capacity, despite the thing being thick. If I am getting a foldable, I am going for the Honor thing.

Fold 3 screen protector started lifting and developed "stress cracks" along the crease. Claimed insurance after warranty was done this past March/April and got a Fold 4. Had to pick up Whitestone screen protector for the inner screen because it didn't have one on it.
I think the biggest problem with my Fold 3 was super cold temperatures (I was working from time to time in a freezer and was dumb enough to have the phone with me under all those layers but it probably didn't help it).
See what kind of amazing deal my carrier provides because 99% of the time it's better than Samsung Canada's trade-in offers/deals.
I'm just hoping the processor does a better job for video/picture capture. Not that the 3 or 4 were all that bad (lot of UHD recordings of my kids basketball games) but hopefully it helps out with some of the issues I had despite using the same camera setup.
I like my Fold because I can leave my laptop at work, remote into it for anything that my Fold can't handle, and do it from literally anywhere that has a good internet connection.
    Looking forward to your review.

To be honest I am watching this on my Fold4 and I'm NOT switching to the Fold 5, after I watched almost four reviews and the Unpacked event.
I just remembered watching the other day a review from Ben, where he reviewed The "Honor Magic V2" and it's astonishing how much more (is possible).
It has a 7.9 inner inch screen, a 6.4 outta screen, and it still has a new thin Stacked 5,000 mAh Battery, I believe 4 × 50megapixel cameras, and it's just 9.9mm thick compared to, for example, my S23 ultra with 8.9 mm. And Honor at least has Google Services, plus a tolerable and manageable UI and maybe a need for getting used to Honor's software, which is going to be acceptable for me.
I'm getting bored by Samsung. I need a total upgrade. That's for sure.

  • @nighttiger314

As you've covered in the video the screen protectors peeling is a serious issue that I really hope the new home design has fixed. On my Fold 3 I've had to send it back about once a year, since it peeled in almost exactly the same way twice. The bottom edge started lifting, which spread to the left and eventually lifted almost like a zipper up the crease. If the Pixel Fold 2 fixes the battery life and heat issues I'm definitely switching to that, but I don't want to jump ship now since my Blackberry Priv had those issues and eventually became unusable because of the extra wear on the battery for it.

I just pre-ordered the Fold 5 as my first foldable from an S22 Ultra ($1000 trade-in) and I already knew it would be an incremental update....but that's okay! The Fold 4 was already very successful so I'll take a tried and true design with a better hinge and minor software and hardware improvements. Companies do it all the time, and incrementation is a way to get closer to perfection.

My fold 3 screen protector started bubbling and once it begins it accelerates to the whole length in a day or two, many believe that having it lift up can cause the screen to crack since when you close the phone that lifted protector will now put pressure on the screen where it folds. Since in my country Samsung uses a third party service/repair company that is rife with horror stories about how bad they are (and I didn't want to send my phone away for potentially weeks) I replaced it myself. I used a Whitestone Dome protector that many recommend and while it has also started to lift at the fold it hasn't accelerated the way the original did so perhaps it uses better adhesive.

But it depends on what Samsung device you use. Samsung Keyboard on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is quite good. But using Samsung Keyboard on a Samsung Galaxy A03s is ATROCIOUS, it lags quite often, so I decided to use Swift Keyboard or GBoard on the A03s.

Finally! A cover screen worth using for more then just resuming music playback and checking the time!
Seriously, the notification management on the Flip 3/4 cover screen is a joke. My Fossil Gen5 smartwatch can do more then the Flip 3 cover screen which is really sad...
While I'm keeping an eye out for any new foldable, and these changes to the Flip are really exciting, I have sworn to myself that I'm only going to upgrade either once my Flip bites the dust (aka UTG cracks) or it stops getting software updates. Hopefully the latter is going to be the reason why. So far tho, the Flip 3 seems to be my most durable phone yet, dropped it once accidentally from shoulder height onto tile flooring and no visible damage outside of some minor scuffs...

I really do love foldables but its so hard to recommend them right simply because they arent durable enough to last. I bought a flip 3 and loved the thing the bits until after 3 months a center crack in the screen appeared getting worse and worse until 6 months after initial purchase when the upper and lower parts of the lcd started to split apart on folds killing the phone. It wad fun while it lasted, it just didnt last near long enough
