Kobe Bryant's beef with Ray Allen was short, but haunted Kobe for years

  • Kobe Bryant and Ray Allen briefly clashed in 2004, but the real story wasn't their rivalry. It was Allen's surprisingly accurate prediction for how the early years of the Kobe Lakers would play out.

    There are two what if's with Ray Allen that I've always wondered about. The first is what would have happened had the Timberwolves (who drafted Ray) not traded him for Marbury and he had teamed up with KG in Minnesota? What kind of tandem would Ray ray and the Big Ticket have formed? The second is this, the Bucks acquire Ray, but in 1998 they don't trade Dirk for Traylor and instead hang on to the young German phenom. What would that have been like? Would we have seen the Bucks turn into a perrenial contender with Robinson, Cassel, Ray and Dirk?

    MJ never made it out of the first round without Scottie and Grant and won a total of ONE playoff game (out of 10). And later, lost to Shaq and Penny because Grant had been traded, and his replacement (Rodman) only arrived next season. Context matters; the eastern conference of the 80s/90s and the western conference of the mid-2000s were extremely tough, and even the greatest players of all time couldn't take on the might of the stacked competition without a great team.

      Like I said we will never know the roster moves they would make around those guys. You can't just assume that they would do everything the same except replacing Marbury with Allen. Their draft position changes because they would be a better team, they never trade Marbury for the players they got in return and they don't pick up Latrell Sprewell because they already have a shooting guard in the 03-04 season. There are numerous other things that you also have to consider that wouldn't play out exactly the same.

    The reason why it was so accurate is because of Michael Jordan. Jordan went through much of the same thing. He didn't trust his teammates, he thought he had to do everything and the coaching reinforced those notions. It was only after Phil Jackson came in and made Jordan aware that he had a team and he wasn't going to win without them, that he won and kept winning.
    The more you forget history the more it repeats itself.

      A few differences though. Jordan didn't ask for a trade. Jordan was self aware enough that he didn't shoot his teams out of games. Jordan was on a much worse organization. Jordan would initially resist, but would also give things a chance to work. And would admit when he was wrong.

      The reason MJ didn't "trust" his teammates early on though was because most of the Bulls roster during his early years was addicted to cocaine and he wasn't gonna blend with that crowd
      A more accurate statement would be that MJ hadn't developed or matured into a winner yet. That whole "selfish player" narrative is way overblown when you consider the state of those Bulls rosters in the 80s

      I don't think this was ever about who was better. I think Allen might have been sore about the way Kobe showed him up in a preseason game, and let everyone know that Kobe just felt that he had to prove a point that he didn't need Shaq or anyone else.
      Later in the season Allen even entertained the idea of going to the Lakers. Why wouldn't you? They had Kobe... and I'm sure Allen felt that he had Kobe figured out well-enough that they could have been a good team.

    I don't think this prophecy haunted Kobe at all. Why? Because Kobe needing "2.5 other good players" is not a novel concept. The issue at large is the same issue Michael Jordan went through as well as LeBron James. This is the National Basketball Association. You can't just expect to win with one star. MJ was really the closest to accomplish that feat as he only had one other bonafide star in Pippen. The irony is that the person that supposedly foresaw this happening to Kobe needed 3 other all-stars later in his career (Ray Allen on the Celtics) to win a championship himself yet he is somewhat criticizing Kobe for needing the same lol. So my point is that he didn't really forecast anything that isn't a universal principle for winning a championship in this league-you need to have a solid supporting cast and at least two legit stars to win in the NBA.

    • @shorewall
      @shorewall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The irony is that Kobe did it to himself. He chased Shaq out, he shut out his teammates. Even if his teammates sucked, he wasn't making them better. The time between Shaq and Pau was all about Kobe's ego running wild.

    I dond't think it's prophecy as much as it is psychology. Ray Allen is a smart guy, and he knows any ego driven superstar won't be satisfied without winning championships.
    Kobe never said he didn't want talented people around him, Ray Allen put that out there. Kobe always wanted good teammates. Let's remember that his frustration with Shaq was that Shaq didn't have the same dedication to practice and exercise that Kobe had, and that Kobe was tired of Shaq showing up to training overweight. Also other things, but his main gripe with teammates was when they wouldn't commit themselves to the game.
    So Kobe wanted players that had his hunger. Saying that a great player will want to be on a team that is competitive is like predicting a good filmmaker will want a cast that can properly act. It's not a prediction, it's just human psychology.

And to Ray's DISCREDIT he would end up needing "2 & 1/2 stars" i.e. Celtics and Heat squad plus he dropped off a notch and fell out his prime while Kobe was still top 3 in the league until the Achilles injury. The fact that Kobe Bryant and Ray Allen only made the Rookie *2nd Team* lets you know how epicly loaded the *1996 Draft* was (0:48).
    And Steve Nash - a 2X MVP - didn't even make either team.
    1996 = the sickest NBA draft class that I've ever witnessed.

    I’m a huge Kobe fan, though Kobe made huge mistakes recruiting other players to the Lakers. Kobe told Kevin Garnett not to come to the Lakers. Huge mistake that would haunt Kobe and the Lakers the following year when Garnett was traded to the Celtics. Ray Allen was spot on and Kobe asked for a trade.

    • @shaft9000
      @shaft9000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kobe wasn't just asking for/demanding a trade of himself - he was issuing an ultimatum. That is the somewhat big(ger) picture not mentioned in this video.
      The ultimatum being: _"Get me a top-10 big _*_**OR else**_*_ I'll leave for a team that will."_

You want to point out the real clout chasers on the internet? How about the people who beg for likes or the people who post comments that contradict popular opinion specifically for the purpose of pissing people off...
