Chris Webber’s ongoing beef with Jalen Rose has kept Michigan’s legendary “Fab Five” from reuniting

  • Chris Webber and Jalen Rose were recruiting rivals growing up in Detroit, but that didn't stop them from being close friends. They were so close, in fact, that Rose followed Webber to the University of Michigan, joining a legendary 1991 recruiting class that came to be known as "The Fab Five." Those five guys revolutionized college basketball and won a whole lot of games, but lost both their trips to the NCAA Final. The second of those losses came after Webber's infamous timeout call. And all those wins? They've been vacated because of a sprawling scandal that included a booster, a gambling ring, and payouts to a number of Wolverines players, including Webber.
So the "Fab Five" legacy is complicated, in large part because of Webber's mistakes. And that fact has fueled decades of beef between the former best friends. Webber has come across as sensitive and standoffish about his past, while Rose has perhaps been too aggressive in pushing Webber to apologize for his past. This beef between them has showed in TV programs, documentaries, and books, and it's only gotten worse.
This episode of Beef History tells the tale of a friendship turned feud, with the hope that airing things out might help put the "Fab Five" and their legacy back where they ought to be: together, and prominent in Michigan history.

The University of Michigan is the true antagonist. They were knowingly letting a criminal launder illegal money through their basketball program to get high level players. Ed Martin got all that money from an illegal gambling operation that he conducted at Ford auto plants. To launder the money he made, he'd entice high level recruits with the promise of money, then when they did play for Michigan, he'd loan them hundreds of thousands of dollars with the intent they'd pay him back after going pro.

Jalen already did a funny video about the 81 scored on him.
it was a few years back, on the now defunct *Grantland* channel, w/ David Jacoby.
it was part of their *"Jalen & Jacoby"* show, called *"Story Time w/ Jalen Rose"* .
      *ESPN:* th-cam.com/video/JdXXdXReIJQ/w-d-xo.html
*_note:_* since *ESPN* has all the video/content rights of *Grantland* , i think they might've shortened the video linked above & made it more family friendly (& less _in your face_ ) then the video originally was.

I can tell you Chris Webber’s side of the story right now: he accepted some money because he was a kid who didn’t fully appreciate the ramifications and then he accidentally made a mental mistake at the end of a nationally televised most important game of his career to that point despite being a peak athlete because he was mentally exhausted and like 20 years old at that point. He denied accepting the money because of the legal ramifications probably as the advice of council around him and then admitted it to the lie in order save his ass just before he felt it was going to become evident he lied. People and media have constantly beat up on him his whole adult life because it’s easy to do and they don’t fully appreciate the hard work it takes to become that level of an athlete. And he is therefore suspicious of media and people. He by nature is also probably a little introverted even if he forces himself to act differently in public. He doesn’t hate Rose but feels betrayed by him because of all the people who have told him to apologize and have criticized him, Rose is the most similar to him given their history. He expected Rose to be more empathetic and faces a dissonance in which he must decide if Rose truly does not understand where he is coming from or if Rose has sold him out. Chris has a hard time understanding the actions of Rose given Rose’s extroverted tendencies. Rose did not truly “sell out” Webber but was repeating things that were already said but given his job the book and personality traits it’s easy to see why Chris took it that way. Obviously Chris doesn’t feel like he should apologize because he feels misunderstood and doesn’t want to speak up because it’s not fair to him to be in a position where that’s the only way people will have more empathy for him despite it not being their business.
This is not rocket science you guys. Also fantastic mini-doc btw!

When the Fab 5 came in the scene in Fall 91, i was a Sophmore in HS. They were 5 starting Freshmen who went all the way to the Title game.
The next season, the 5 starting Sophmores again made it to the Title game.
They were huge. They were legends. The entire College game hated them. All the other teams, players, announcers, broadcasters were against them.
They changed everything. They started the baggy, long shorts. B4 that, players wore very short, tight shorts. They wore black socks, black sneakers, and shaved their heads.
Everywhere u went, people were wearing Michigan gear. It was everywhere.
Im a Uconn fan, cause i live in CT, but they were a must see.
What a time to b a college hoops fan! Thanks for the great memories of the 91-92, And 92-93 season. Even after Webber left, the 4 of them made it to the elite 8 in 93-94 season.

I’d like for this to be reconciled. Chris Webber being an honorary football captain and now Juwan Howard being the Michigan basketball coach tells me that there’s a chance of it coming.
