He received 46 months in federal prison and 10 years supervised release.

And before you say "the decoy said they were underage so he must've thought they were", ask yourself this: do you support arresting people for thought crime? Because that's what that is. You don't know what he was thinking. The ones who go to the house definitely show intent, and should definitely be arrested, but the fact that he didn't go to the house means the police could never prove what his intentions actually were. For all you know he misread the chat and thought they were 21 instead of 12, and then realized he had made a mistake so he didn't show up. The police have to prove intent for the pedos to be convicted in these cases, and not showing up makes that impossible to prove.

They still believe at that point that they can talk their way out of the arrest. It's hard to accept that you're about to go to jail, so I think the tendency is to latch onto the irrational delusion that this can be wriggled out of if you just come up with a plausible denial. The smartest thing is to just accept that you're being charged and if "your side of the story" will clear you, then let your lawyer tell it IN COURT.
