Do a dopamine detox. Better than that go away for some time. Shut down your phone keep it in a corner and see how long you can go without it (ofc do it only if you dont have special calls or smth on ur phone) mine was around 3 d before i connected back to the Internet in the meanwhile i woild use it for alarms and stuff other thsn that it'd be shut down for most you do you

I went without my phone for a week and I was honestly so hard. I constantly felt like I needed to check my phone to catch up on the newest TH-cam videos or Instagram posts. I felt like I was missing out on what was going on in social media when I wasn’t checking every day. I found myself being extremely bored for the first couple of days because I wasn’t laying on my bed watching Netflix for hours on end. I felt like time had slowed down and the day would last forever. I felt anxious and found myself trying to find any access to an electronic as I could. I would watch my brother play x box and look over my moms shoulder as she scrolled through Facebook. I don’t realize how addicted I to my electronics until I didn’t have it. I felt like my phone was apart of me and if I didn’t have it I would lose connection with the rest of the world. But at the end of the week I went outside. I rode my bike for the first time since i was a kid. I walked my dog and had meaningful conversations with my mom. I didn’t realize how much of the world I had missed. It’s so sad how addicting phones really are

@kimberly alcala it's so sad what the phone has done to us and our lives.. i actually have a ton of options and things to do if i dont have my phone.. but even if i want to do them, my phone addiction doesnt let me.. i just keep "wishing" to do those other meaningful activities, but just end up spending my whole day scrolling on the phone and having achieved nothing much in a day.. and when you stay with the phone for long hours, you cant focus on what else you need to do.. everytime that im away from the phone, i end up keeping on thinking about the phone and my hands are itching to go grab it again.. how beautiful life must have been for the people in the past who didnt have phones then! Im going to remove myself from being a slave to the phone. We humans are strong, all it takes is a strong will power.. i will update my progress here if i see a positive change!

@@Celestials1aurora yes i do.. i have 2 accounts actually.. the first one is what i created a long time ago, and follow friends and known people and some useful pages.. but i recently created a private account where i have no followers at all.. just me and myself, and i like post life's memorable moments there, and my achievements and experiences to remember.. so i post them, and am free from thinking about the number of likes blah blah.. and i follow just a very few pages that share really beneficial content.. that's the only reason im on instagram now.. just to learn some useful things from those beneficial pages once in a while.. i have my social account logged out most of the time, and now log into that to just have a peep only once in a few months of after many weeks! Feels so good! But i still have to control my general phone addiction.. even when im out of social media, i still find ways to still keep being on the phone either by looking at my gallery, reading pdfs or youtube videos etc.. most of my day im looking at the phone screen either on social media or not 😭

It’s funny, yes, but that’s the first step. You’re recognizing/ acknowledging a problem & wanting to make a change. By putting in the effort to even *want* to change yourself for the better, can be a huge deal. “Yay!” for those of you who are doing the self work. Give yourselves a pat on the back. Don’t forget to Love yourself. After all, when we take care of ourselves, everything else in life seems to get better too ;) ...

The space to daydream is so necessary, I think. I see it on the train - everyone consuming news, content, whatever... Just staring out the window and watching the world go by may feel like a waste of time but it's been great for my general mental well-being and creativity.

I agree so much with this. I try to force myself not to look at my phone while on public transport. I tend to watch what other people are doing and I even count how many people are staring down at their phones. It's amazing how ridiculous it looks like: all necks bent and interacting solely with a screen.

Now I live with my boyfriend and we always eat while on our phones, watching tv or a movie, or watching videos. The only time we actually just sit and eat and talk is when we go out to a restaurant. So for the past month, I've been getting up a little earlier, making coffee & reading a book for an hour or so. Before ever once opening my phone or laptop.
It has been immensely helpful, I feel less tired, less anxious & more relaxed as I start the day. This is for true morning people... that being said you can adapt a similar routine in the evenings as well.

    I've got one tip.
Turn on the black+white colour filter (General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Colour Filters on iPhone).
I've always loved the monochrome aesthetic, so I originally turned it on for that reason, but turning colour back on was a shock.
In the same way candy is brightly coloured and saturated to make it appealing, your phone interface is so juicy (this was seriously the best adjective I could come up with) that you're drawn to it.

    • @kaieden
      @kaieden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

I realise that sometimes you need colour to understand a design element, I've set my phone to switch on a triple-click of the home button.
in Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut
You can add multiple options, I find 'smart invert colours' & 'Reduce white point' to be helpful too.

Investing time into learning the habit of overcoming digital micro-distractions is ~going to be~worth more than gold. Hands down.
    The following have helped me:
    1. Turn off notifications (unbelievably effective).
    2. Buy a cheap old school phone (the ones with actual buttons and no wifi option) and use that instead of your smart phone to contact or to be contacted during work hours. Only close friends, colleagues and family have this number and they know only to use it if urgent.
    3. Reward yourself when you actively stop yourself from infinitely scrolling.
    4. Make yourself do 25 squats for every 5min you mindlessly scroll/check your phone.
I've ended up with 6 hours of extra time a day using the steps above. SIX HOURS.
(Which I use to get out for a walk and listen to podcasts/audiobooks or chill, cook, plan, finish projects early, start side projects... its insane!)
    Thanks Matt!

I never thought I’d be that guy with a smart phone addiction, I remember when the iPhone first came out and I thought “nah, not for me, who wants to watch TV on their phone anyway?” Fast forward 10 years later and this shit is a real problem for myself and for society. The problem is, the smart phone is also a good tool. I’m learning music production and in s few clicks I’m watching videos and reading articles on just want I need for mixing or whatever. The problem is putting it away when you don’t need it anymore.

I too felt guilty for being too offline so I'm now checking my phone every hour at least (and I still suck at answering phonecalls) but now I'm upset for wasting so much time on my phone, and I'm learning to switch off my phone when I feel like being on line puts too much pressure on me

See the thing is, I've never had a problem being out and about, waiting for trains or busses, waiting for appointments, sitting down alone in the city or at a public space without distraction. I like to immerse myself in my surroundings and I love to just pick up on everything happening around me... But when I'm at home, I don't know what it is, but it's just too easy for me to open up my laptop and open up youtube and then open up ten different videos in new tabs and then spend hours watching endless videos. This is my vice. TH-cam is my vice! I watch it during breakfast, I watch it during lunch, if my mother wasn't around to berate me for it, I'd likely watch it during dinner. I watch it when I should be getting on with things, I watch it even when I have the motivation to do something creative and fun for myself. It's horrible. But I just can't help it. I think I need to block it... But I keep thinking about all the creators and their videos I'm missing out on and then I end up with just more time wasted catching up on all the videos!! TH-cam has become such a massive part of media it's incredible just how effective it's become at being addictive...

I find that putting the phone behind me (away from my sight and obs without any notifications on) helps, as well as not getting into habit of taking my phone out of my bag when I come from work, helps me to forget about it. I happen to remember that it's still in my bag a couple of hours later, but the key here is to have a routine that doesn't involve your phone when you come back from work. Otherwise you will always remember to pull it out.

Yeah exactly, completely agree with u two. However, the main reason it will always be like that is cuz of all the ppl out there that make all those apps & games to play. I heard in I believe a ted talk once the person said that those ppl out there making all those games and apps all the time or tweaking the already existing ones to be "better"? Well they're doing it to suck peoples time out of their lives by making their app/games more addicting, and to why keep wasting ur time on them when they're sucking ur life away on purpose was the main focus. Ppl do need to realize that more likely than not all apps and games are doing exactly that and they're taking away our lives and that a cellphone is perfect for emergency or urgency. I don't know but I kinda got a feeling that the first touch screen cell phone was made without really realizing the bad effects that it could have on society :/ which is sad..

A couple days ago, my laptop shut down and I starting getting anxiety and feeling as if I was trapped. That was when I realized I had an addiction to my laptop. I decided that it was the perfect time to go back to reading again. 4:57 That is interesting, because I tend to observe people when I'm waiting for someone, and I always thought that people that are on phone in such situations, are because it's their comfort zone. And the ones who tend to just be there and embrace it, I concider more confident and sociable, if that makes sense. I mean, why enjoy sun, air, coffe, people passing by, when you can stare at your phone like a zombie. My friends and me don't use phones when we are together. I deactivated instagram 1 month ago, and actually felt "cut out" of the society for few days. But now, it's very beneficial for me. No more procastinating, no more seeing chosen and filtered, only best parts of someones life. Imagine an antisocial person, or someone emotionally unstable, it would make them feel worse and potentially depressed. Because all they see is how perfect everyone else life on social networks is, when that, more then likely is not the case. Social networks are the most antisocial places of the 21st century.

    .becoming fat
    .it will hurt you eyes

.it will change hiw you behave
.you will become unsocial with your familly (rightnow my brother is in his bedroom and my father also and me alsow in the living room and he are not siting and talking together)
.you may be more atrackted to other tradition and you may neglect you tradition

Some useful apps for combating smartphone addiction. I use android so I don't know whether they'd be available on ios or not.
1)LessPhone - It's a launcher allowing you to only use three apps at most with the phone or dialer app and tasks list. If you want to use more than three apps you could use Google's Desert Island.
2)Daywise - It's schedules your notifications into batches and you can set the time as to when you get them.
You can checkout Google's digital wellbeing apps on the play store. Also you can use digital wellbeing features on your smartphone present in the settings if your smartphone has android 9 and above.

Matt this awesome. Few tips and tricks I and my partner have started using are relatively simple but effective. When out at dinner there are no phones. Five months ago we both deleted all social media, which provided even more time for us to both complete our MBA's. The one thing I would encourage others to do is to mentally and emotionally redirect that energy and focus into things of importance around you, of course, we could elect to do nothing, which would be great, but actively switching that energy has helped us immensely. I heard someone say recently, that all moments of genius are born out of boredom. Take some time and be bored, "shhhhh...I'm hunting Wabbits". Our clarity of mind is out of this world. Matt your awesome!

Having this addiction is the worst thing. I find myself looking at stupid things on fb, twitter, watching other people's "happy lives". I guess it's goes farther than just procrastinating, I keep myself busy to not be sad (because of my problems) or anxious because I might be missing out something. I have an important test on Jan 20th (my semester depends on this test) and I haven't studied at all, I keep listening to music, distracting myself. I dream pf a good life but I can't seem to find urgency on the really important things. This video was really helpful so thank you so much.
Please make a video on how to become an independent person. I'm 22 and I still live with my family and my 6 dogs, I would like some peace but I never have the money to look for a proper place. Thank you :)

Rightly said Matt. And what I notice is that we don't want to accept that there is an addiction. We try to justify using phones all the time. This is exactly what addicts do. Personally I am able to now realise that I am checking my phone all the time. I have removed notifications, I am not on most social media. Yet this habit of picking up phone every few mins persists. Although removing notifications have really improved my habits. What you talked about using do not disturb feature is really useful. It has helped me. One suggestion - If we can truly find a hobby, doesn't have to be a big hobby, it helps.

There’s one time when my phone is broken for almost 2 weeks...1st 3 days I felt miserable but after that,I felt..free..here’s the advantages:
-i communicate better in real life
-my speech and the way I talk improved(usually ppl have to say “what” when I talk..but now..not anymore)
-my brain felt kinda free and dun have pressure
-im aware of what’s REALLY happening
But after 2 weeks,my mom bought me a new iPhone 8(i didnt even ask for it lol)
After the advantages,i can now control how much I used my phone. :]

This video is still SO relevant. I especially find it very hard on the weekends to really rest. I love what Anthony said, "Rest is productivity - but actual rest. Restorative rest." It feels like such a fight to get truly restorative rest. I simultaneously want to crush my phone into a million pieces, but I also feel like need it right by my side at all times.

#5 dont put your phone on the table. Your sending an unconscious message to the room that you have more important places to be. At home and at work, When your sitting with someone else, keep your phone in your pocket.

i got an older phone that just makes calls and texts for when i go out with my family (kids games, date nights, hanging out with friends). i have given he number to 3 people (mom, wife, inlaws)...this helps me disconnect in the important times. I also put my phone on the charger when i get home and dont go to it till after family is in bed. I cannot tell you how this has changed things for me and my relationships. it was hard at first but man i love it.

As someone else mentioned, it’s really helped me to be intentional about my phone usage and think about how it’s serving me and my goals and purposes. I live in a country where I don’t speak the language fluently, so my phone has been an invaluable tool in helping me translate things, look things up, etc., as well as in helping me keep in touch with friends and family. Instead of condemning social media wholesale, I think it’s worth it to think about what value you truly get from it (for me, it’s keeping up with friends and sharing my life with them) and to then stop scrolling/ using it once you’ve gotten that value for the day/week/month/ whatever. I like to think about what I’m actually accomplishing with my phone- whether that’s finding information I need, checking in with friends, or whatever- and when I find myself not “accomplishing” anything (i.e. mindlessly scrolling), I say to myself, “Okay, we’re done with this, let’s move on to the next thing.”

By the way. Here are some crucial tips. So you don't get distracted while reading an important article on the web.
    For pc: use image-block
    use adblock
    extentions.
    For phone: use
    Lightning Browser
I was so happy and reliefed when I found this web browser app for the phone. (via settings it lets you block stupid ads, pics and images) This way you can concentrate fully again.
    Hope this helps. Take care.
ps: also have a look into this piece of work= "The Words pdf" by "Said Nursi".

It’s not so much a phone addiction, more like social media addiction.. once I deleted Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat I don’t get any notifications and I barely care to be on my phone.. unless it’s TH-cam. And I don’t count TH-cam as a social media app for some reason... but I guess it is 😭

my phone broke last week and I've stayed a week without it and now I don't even feel the need to buy a new one. in this week I've realised how much i use my phone and what i can cut when i get a new phone. on the 1st day i just kept using my brother's but as the days went on i lost the urge to use my phone. my advise to everyone is just be patient we dont need/have to use our phone we just want to and we just make it obvoius that needing/having to and wanting r 2 different things.

Something I did (on iPhone) was turn off raise to wake (under display and brightness) and tap to wake (under accessibility then touch). It definitely helps. I also think turning off Face ID/Touch ID off could help as well and add a barrier for getting on your phone

Thats a great hack! I was suffering from phone addiction myself, and it ruined my relationship. After the breakup, I read many books about it and boiled them down to an easy method that worked for me and many of my friends. Now I created a prototype to test. Search for meetzario on Google. I would be super curious to know what you think about it.

I like a quote from a book only written like a chat conversation, "I believe we're not attach to our phones but the people behind it".
I understand it's kind of depressing how everyone is always on their phone, but sometimes I'm in situations that may seem like I'm just wasting my time on my phone, but I'm actually talking to my family because I miss them or just something bad happen and they're letting me know how everything is going.
So that makes me think that maybe I've thought the same about other people, when they could be just in the same situation as I am sometimes.
There's plenty of colours in our actions to believe everything is just black or white.
    Good video Matt :)
