On 30th December 2019, l was in my bed and l played this video... When the video ended, l told myself: "THAT'S IT, do something really good for yourself!".
I made a decision to quit smoking after 12 years. On 30th December 2020 it's going to be ONE year since the day l quit smoking. Trust me guys... IT IS POSSIBLE! Stay strong and l wish you all the best! :)

You say, "It's OK to fail."
When I was (much) younger I was learning to ice skate. I was trying a new move and my teacher asked if I had fallen over yet. I proudly told her I had not.
"If you haven't fallen over," she told me kindly, "you are not trying hard enough."
That piece of wisdom has served me throughout life. I now fall over regularly. It is often a good sign.

So I’ve tried a couple of these habits myself, here are my experiences:
    Quitting sugar:
Removed added sugar from my diet and opted for sweetner or low/zero sugar drinks etc. Didn’t really notice a difference in my life until I recently had a cup of tea with 2 spoons of sugar. I crashed moments after, and came to realise that my energy levels had actually been more constant.
    Cold showers:
Did this for just around a year. Noticed feeling refreshed and I didn’t get a single cold or illness at all. Wasn’t sure if it was down to the cold showers but i restarted taking warm showers and have gotten ill 2-3 times since with a cold, viral infection, stomach problems & indigestion etc.
    Quit caffeine:
I was dependent on caffeine for a normal functioning day so this was really hard to do and I had withdrawal symptoms for weeks feeling tired, having constant headaches, etc. I had trouble concentrating and staying awake during the day. After a couple of weeks I no longer felt the need and was doing completely fine, waking up ok and felt fully awake during the day. I think my sleep cycle has actually improved now and I only drink tea/coffee very occasionally and don’t feel dependent anymore.
    Time blocking:
This is one I’ve recently started doing and I do find myself to be a lot more productive. However I also feel like I’m being too hard on myself, underestimating how long tasks will take then feeling annoyed for not having gone through my tasks and not feeling satisfied, whereas in hindsight I know the day was very productive. Perhaps need to be a bit more flexible with the timings and give myself more time for tasks.
    Journalling:
This really does help me clear my mind and helps me come up with solutions to problems or ways to tackle situations that affected me, etc. I do it in the night and reflect on my events for the day and whenever I felt like I had a bad day I focus on the positive aspects of the day and make action plans for a better day tomorrow.
    Meditating:
I don’t do one hour a day like Matt but I do 10 minutes of daily Calm at night when I’m in bed. It really does help me be more centred and I feel I’m able to react less to situations which would have previously affected me for a lot longer. I also think faster and feel less sluggish generally.
    Gym:
Started going regularly for a year. Have noticed tremendous improvements in stamina and endurance. Before, I swear to god the thought of 5 minutes on the treadmill would feel so intense and I would struggle and would be puffing and panting once it’s over. Now I can run for much longer and it feels much more effortless. I don’t get tired easily anymore and I only noticed how much I’d improved when I recently had to run fast to catch a train - I was only slightly breathless, and remember thinking how heavily I used to breathe when I got on the train when I used to do the same before.
    Overall comments:
I did do these for longer than thirty days and implemented them slowly over around three years. I am still continuing with gym, meditating, journaling and time blocking, but have given up on cold showers due to plumbing reasons. I don’t go all out when quitting sugar but still do pick the low sugar option or Coke Zero for example rather than normal Coke. I don’t depend on caffeine but do occasionally enjoy a tea or coffee, especially before a gym session. Need to double down on these habits and improve on them as well as seeing if I can implement new ones in 2020 such as waking up at 5!
Great video as always Matt, thanks a lot for sharing your experiences! 🙏🤟

I can relate to the time-blocking challenge. I still occasionally struggle to find a happy medium and sometimes end up making myself stop when it's time to move on to next task I want to get to. Overall, I'm starting to focus more on achieving more balance in my life for greater satisfaction.

mad props to you for doing this! I'm a very shy person too and I kind of hate how much it's discouraged on the internet for introverts/people with social anxiety to go out of their comfort zone. As it turns out, just practicing talking to strangers is a huge help. I'm a nurse so I have to walk into someone's room, meet them, and potentially having uncomfortable conversations, stab them with needles, put tubes in various places of their body. Me from five years ago simply could not have done this, I would rather have thrown myself out of a window. I'm so glad I stuck with it though because repeated exposure to uncomfortable social situations has helped me so much to be more social in other areas of my life. I'm still definitely an introvert, just better with people.

The biggest change I've made to my habits is going to bed earlier. I am naturally a night-owl but my health was suffering from not getting enough sleep. So I dedicated myself to getting into bed by midnight (I get up around 7:45) which gave me 5 good 90-minute sleep cycles. To my surprise, I actually started getting sleepy even earlier, iike around 10, which got me into bed sometimes as early as 11:15. I have been so proud of this new habit.
I too have found that I must focus on just building a couple of habits at once or it doesn't work because it really does take a lot of focus and attention. I'm also working on preparing my meals at home instead of going out to eat like I used to do almost every day. I'm overweight and really wanted to eat more healthily and I've found you really just have to suck it up and cook your own meals to eat healthy long-term. I got a jump-start on this when we went into COVID lock-down because I was too nervous to go eat in public places so I was more motivated to cook at home. But then I decided to take that opportunity to make it became more of a habit. So I"m really proud of that one too. AND I started making sure I get at least 50 ounces of water a day (enough so my pee is a straw-color which is just right). Every day I add magnesium powder to my water bottle and I drink that in the morning and then in the evening. The magnesium REALLY keeps my anxiety under control AND it also makes me sleepy earlier which helps me get to bed on time. I highly recommend it.
My next one is exercising more. I bought some bands and hand weights and have started learning how to use them and I want to stretch more too and build up strength in my core for my back. Once I get good at all three of those things, early bedtime, healthy home-cooked meals and exercise, I think I'll do meditation next and then being more routinized with my business tasks (I want to eventually start a YT channel). AND I also want to get good at programming which means I want to do the 100-day code challenge. So I urge people to just give it a try to develop a new habit. It feels really good. I am so glad I did it.

Heres a tip for quitting social media: wait for a day where everything you see on it is negative, and if it is...delete it right then. (More tips: be spontaneous with this-don’t sit on it. Do it right there and right then) ps. Since quitting fb my emotional health has improved a LOT and I have become way more productive thus leading to me being more satisfied with how I was spending my time. My mom still tells me all the big stuff happening that she sees on her fb so I’m not missing out actually at all. I’m just not wasting my emotional energy looking for gossip online

WOW ITS RUSS From all the suggestions i’ve read this one really interested me. I would like for him to give this a go.
Would the result be different if you do those things out of habit or if it’s the norm in your country?
I live in Holland. When we enter the train and go to the seats there’s a door we have to go through. I’m on if those people that always looks back and holds the door, even when people are taking their sweet time or need to bring down their luggage. At my current job, i travel daily with the train for 3 years. My experience with being kind is 90/10.
What i’ve learned is the intention you do the good deed for. Since i’m a religious person i started to do the good deed because it helps others, you cater to others, to relief something from the other because i want Allah to help me in the same way or a better way. Since then whether i get a thank you or not, or people even refuse my help or ignore me. I always go back to the intention. That gives me the biggest relief.

      1) first few days wake up and hit snooze than go back to bed sleep comfortably until I must leave.
      2) not hit anything at all. It can ring forever I’m fast asleep again. 😂

“Just start”. Best advice ever. New years resolutions often fail because people tend to do everything they shouldn’t do the days before they want to start, which makes it ten times harder to start. If I want to change something I need to start today - not tomorrow, or in a week. So I went out on a run and a quick workout after watching this video. I also calendar blocked my workouts for the next week so that its already planned. Thanks Matt!

There's also a few challenges where you only drink water for a week & the money you save from buying coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, alcohol etc. you donate that to a charity based around water, be it building wells in 3rd world countries or lifeboat search & rescue or providing swimming lessons for disadvantaged kids.

@wearealltubes they are. I presume they mean not to do something which is good, but you are expected to do, or is natural for you to do, but to do something extra, out of your zone. Let's say (it's a very basic example) you're rushing to catch a bus, not because you're in any particular hurry, but because the whether is bad and you want to be home soon. Suddenly you are approached by a foreign tourist who lost their way to the hotel. You realise explaining the route will take you a couple of minutes, and you will have to wait for the next bus. It's not rude of you to tell them "sorry, I'm in a hurry" and go, because it's not a life threatening situation, they can find help elsewhere and you have something you want to do. But a random act of kindness is if you decide in this very moment to forget about your needs and focus on a complete stranger.

Truth. I did cold showers for a few months. It made my usual stressful days at work not so big of a deal. I was able to mentally deal with it, and not be some consumed in a moment that truly wasn’t that big of a deal.
Physical pain and discomfort wasn’t as bad either. I’d simply tell myself “get over it, sir”, or “it’s not that big of a deal”; and I was able to think less of myself, and focus on the moment of what’s around me.
That was a few years ago. Now I seen humor and a positive side to most things - even when I’m in the most miserable moment or mood: I still acknowledge, and can thus, lighten up a bit.

I quit Facebook over 3 years ago, this year I quit Instagram 5 months ago and still going strong!
The habit I'm building at the moment is calling at least 2 people I care about each weekend just to catch up.
I usually have 4-5min phone conversations with people to resolve work related issues during the week. My "shoot-the-shit" conversations had to start out with mentally prepared conversation topics and lasted for around 20-30min when starting the habit. Now I can call my family and loved ones with no mental preparation and know the phone call is gonna last well over an hour!
I already silence my phone during work (airplane mode), but the next habit I want to try is silencing my phone on my off days as well. Only keeping the ringer on at the most. Good luck on all your journeys!

I wake up every day at 4:45 AM before school to run( I never ever ran or practiced sports before) and then I take a shower , later I have plenty of time to make breakfast (I never had breakfast before school before) I go to school already woken up ,ready and fresh.
I lost 12 pounds(it doesn't sound like a lot but I weigh now like a 100 pounds only so I can't lose more pounds otherwise I'm going to be underweight).
I can really relate to you when you say you were hard on yourself because I'm a perfectionist and I was really hard on myself too when I missed a day without running or when I didn't accomplish all the stuff that I wrote on my calendar.

@@FellowTravelerVlog Don't know the guy's content personally, but everything is just pseudoscience until it has been "accepted" through the use of the scientific method and peer review - didn't make them not real before we figured out how the thing worked.
You also can't forget the multitude of things "forgotten" or just simply written out (things such as the effects of sunlight (or alternate source of vitamin D) on a developing fetus until a whole slew of fetuses were born with so many bone fissures that they were often taken away because newer doctors had no other explanation than child abuse) - "the sun is good for you" was just pseudoscience until the *active* need to look into it.

Some of the habits that I have started that have really stuck and made my life better are: Prayer Journaling every morning, Oil pulling (swishing coconut oil around in my mouth for 10 plus minutes) every morning, drinking vinegar water every morning, kneeling to pray every night before bed, heading to bed by 10 pm, looking for the good in others and in situations I am in - practicing positivity and writing a list of things I am thankful for every morning. I find it very helpful when working on a new habit to somehow relate it to something that I already do. If I can tie it in with something else it seems to stick so much better. Also, do give yourself some grace. You pointed that out as well. There are days you will be sick or traveling and your schedule just doesn't work the same way. Things will be missed. You can't kick yourself for that - just start again and keep working at it.

The one habit that has changed my life the most: I created a watching game for youtube videos. Every time someone in a video says certain words or does certain things, I stop and either work on a project, or do what the person just said. I watch mostly decor/crafting videos and minimalism videos. Examples of things people say that I use as cues to pause the video and do something to move forward: minimal-, less, relationships, cute, pretty, a unit of time (2 minutes, 10 minutes, etc.), stressed, pause, "I'm so excited," "let's get started," "do a 2-minute tidy." There are lots of others. I just notice what words I'm hearing often, or expect to hear in a video, and add those to the list of word cues. Things people do that I use as cues: hanging curtains, painting a wall, using a power tool, washing a dish, making coffee/tea, etc. Instead of feeling like a loser because I just wasted hours binge-watching videos, I can take an hour to finish watching just one 10 minute video, and I end it feeling accomplished, because I've gotten a LOT of stuff done. So if I decide to keep watching, it'll support me in getting even more done!

The thing about waking up at 5 am , is that you also need to sleep early enough to counter the exhaustion. A lot of people are under the misconception that waking up early will solve your problems, but you also need to sleep early for it to work. I used to hate waking up at 5 am, but then I started focusing on sleeping between 9:30-10 pm every night, and then it started working for me.
It took a lot of effort to force my body to sleep at that time (cause prior to that, I would sleep by like 12 - 1 am ), but after 30 days of practise, it started to show results. And now, I just wake up at 5:30, energized and ready to go.

In Spain, we have the siesta. For an hour every day, after you come home from work, eat, etc you take a 1-hour siesta to let your body relax and destress. When you wake up at around 5, you typically go do some sports or any activity you want. It gives you a moment of rest after your work life so your body can transition to home life.

Exactly. And I love the quiet of the world when you get up early like that. For a very long time I told people 7:30 was the perfect wake up time bc its not early and not late. So many people my age have always thought that was too early. But i feel ok about it because ik if I wake up later I will feel grumpy and like my day is mostly over. By 2pm - no matter what I do or when I wake up, eat, exercise - I am tired. I think all fo these work best by knowing how you best function and how it can work with the things it needs to (work, family, etc)

This is so relatable. 4 years ago I was playing games all day and screwing up college. I made the exact same goals as you described. I very slowly started going to the gym and eating healthy. Took me like a year before it became a true routine. It gave me confidence that I could do more. I finally started studying really hard and finished college and have started a job in a very lovely/engaging place since the start of this year. Im still not writing everyday and I have way too much screentime in my free time. But seeing how my life has changed the past few years, I truely believe I can reach my goals. It just takes time and continuous failing and trying it again. The only thing you truely have to do is keep thinking about your goals and keep trying them, no matter how many times you fail. There will come a day where they will stick. And the more you achieve these goals, the more you truely believe that you're capable of tackling the next one.

    Habit:
    - Arriving early (minimum 15 minutes before) to everything.
Might not sound like a big deal to people who do that regularly, but for a procrastinator that continues to try and kick their bad habit by saying, "ok from now on I'm going to be on time!"
On time, is not enough time for a natural procrastinator that will squeeze every last second out to do things, so once I shifted to the choice to be early, I began being on time. :)

One tool that has helped me understand more about myself and the way my mind/personality works is through this personality test called the enneagram/9 types. Any of the free quizzes give you a good starting point of your number. Each number has healthy and unhealthy versions of themselves. Knowing my number has been a good starting point for me to grow and understand my own pitfalls.
Also, if it helps to read this: You are allowed to be not perfect and are loved when you are not perfect.

This isn't so much a habit, as a new frame of mind for me: letting myself fail, and not giving myself shit.
Lately, I've gotten in the habit of allowing things to go pear-shaped, or not according to plan, without it being the end of the world. If i'm dieting or budgeting or whatever, and I miss a day, or I eat too much one day, or I spend more than I intend, it's cool. If I miss a day of language practice, or singing practice. No worries.
For me, allowing myself to fail has been pretty transformative. Now, these habits have started sticking. And I'm enuring myself to discomfort, which leads to being more productive.
I'm glad to see you've gained so much from this year-long experiment. It is truly wonderful

Any advice on how you learned to be easier on yourself? This is easily my biggest problem when I try to build habits or be productive.

    • @Nemo37K
      @Nemo37K 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@claysmith8840 So, in the interest of full disclosure, I have been doing Mindfulness Meditation for a while using headspace. by a wide margin that has been the biggest thing that helps.
However, I also do morning pages and word vomiting - writing uncensored thoughts to a specific word count each day (about 2k for me personally) and then chucking it out. I actually wrote 1 million words in a month for NaNoWriMo using this method.
In the process of getting every single thought I have in my brain out on paper, I've ended up writing a lot of positive affirmations that has been very helpful. As long as its purely uncensored, it is mad helpful.
Also, harder to verify, but I've been using self-hypnosis when I go to bed - specifically Dauchsy on youtube- for a while now, and i've noticed my brain space has chilled out considerably using his work. I'm pretty suggestible, and I'm a proponent of the "Strange Loop" theory of consciousness, so hypnosis while i'm sleeping is super productive. It's like rewriting the meta-data that is your thoughts when you aren't conscious (you're brain still processes info while you are asleep).
but, mostly, it's just a matter of practice. These things will help if you do them regularly, for sure.
      Cheers.

@@Nemo37K So helpful and encouraging!! I've been doing this too and although I still have my moments, I've changed the tone I use with myself from overly harsh to gentle, encouraging and (dare I say) loving... Internal dialog is important, I always knew this but I had a skewed perception that I was actually already being gentle with myself, when actually I was really putting myself through the ringer. What helped me the most was asking myself if I would speak to my significant other the way I just spoke to myself without feeling terrible about it... And it started clicking that this was why I was feeling terrible... Bashing myself without even apologizing or soothing myself afterwards, how ridiculous!
Glad you mentioned the writing because I've been thinking about doing just that for awhile, I'll take this as confirmation that I should try it. Any tips on how to approach it without really overthinking lol I'm a writer so I feel like I'm always writing expecting someone to eventually read it, so I feel like I'm writing for an audience... I suppose this would be writing everything I think, without self- judgement or need for analysis and then releasing it afterwards by destroying it?

      @Nemo37K 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@laetitiasmith That's great! It takes a lot of practice, and I'm glad you're getting there :)
You're right on the money. The idea is to be as completely uncensored as possible and having a definable metric to hit - word count, minute timer, page count -etc. and then just letting everything come out in a torrent until you hit it. At first, it's mega uncomfortable - because you don't realize how many of your thoughts scare you - but then it feels like a powerful release.
I recommend Julia Cameron's "The Artist Way" if you want more insight into this idea. I don't do it in the morning as she suggests, but it still works for me.

Welcome to the club, I did this a few years back and it's one of those things that you'll never regret doing. It's also something that really impresses people when it comes up in conversation. Although, I try not to bring it up myself and only mention it when other people talk about it.
