Hey Matt, do you have a video on deleting toxic people, out of your life? If not, can you some how make one, please? As a minimalist, I feel like erasing toxic people plays a big part on minimalism lol.
As long as they’re not partially used/expired!! organizations that distribute toiletries and such to homeless people often have a surplus of hotel toiletries, and will throw away the not-nice ones. Save them their time and don’t donate anything that’s not nice enough for you to use in the first place. Everyone deserves nice and sanitary things! 😊
I think minimalism goes hand in hand with Kaizen. Declutter your home in small steps. You don't need to rush. Just one drawer at a time, or a table or just organize a few things. Don't push yourself to do everything at once, but don't limit too if you're in a mood. Do it every day and soon you'll be surprised by how much you accomplished with dedicating almost no time to it.
Alright last comment before I get ready for work. This video punched me right in the gut. I'm struggling with clutter and being messy. I cleaned up my living room and dining room yesterday and threw out a lot of crap after this. This weekend, I am going to do the same in my bedroom. Dude...you produce amazing content. Thanks again:)
Honestly, this is the most practical video I've seen on "minimalism" that I've ever watched. I may have heard the concepts before, but the why you put the information together, with the addition of how hard it can be with a girlfriend or kids really has given me hope for myself.
I've gone through the decluttering process multiple times thinking that my room is 'dirty'. In reality though I was so used to a decluttered room that it actually took me more time to find my stuff since I didnt want to spoilt the organised manner of my clothes. I've just been living like my decluttered self from a couple months now as I genuinely feel better rather than having a tidy room. If you clean your room weekly (hoover, dust, replace and wash sheets) having a decluttered room isnt really bad. This might actually be quite confusing to understand lol hopefully someone else also with me 😂
Man... this video is incredible. I’m a freelance audio/video/lighting production guy that spends most of my time on the road with different tours. Since there’s such a wide range of events that I’m involved in producing, I’m always packing and repacking my Pelican cases when I get home from a show and prepping for the next one. More often than not, it usually consists of me dumping my work boxes in a corner, then frantically trying to pack the morning of my flight, or up until 20 minutes before I have to go to bus call. It’s so tough trying to organize all of my gear because there’s not a ton of each item, so it would be super expensive to buy the containers needed to hold 2-3 cables of one type, 2-3 of another, and so on. However, I’ve been learning a lot from your videos, so I’m learning that I don’t need more containers to hold each item, instead, I need to reduce the number of items I have, therefore making it easier to organize because there’s less stuff. Anyway... great video, sir! Your content has been super helpful, and I’ve been taking lots of notes within my new bullet journal (that I can blame you for ever starting... ha!). Thanks so much!
@MyUTF4 let me clarify: i use this tool only to upload videos (and watch matt), because it's what i love. i am a minimalist, (which is another reason why i watch matt) and what it has done for me is shown me what i really need to focus on in life. if you actually watched his videos instead of looking at the comments, you would see that youtube can actually add value to your life. when matt began his social media detox, he still made videos, right? yep. so in conclusion, worry more about yourself and what adds value to your life, and not trying to police what adds value to other peoples lives.

why do i feel the sudden urge to binge watch all your videos... but hey, respect my guy - love your cinematography style and storytelling & also realised that minimalism is alot less of a harsh word than OCD when explaining my compulsive urge to declutter EVERYTHING. This was really helpful to give me started on a plan and actions to organize my own place, but I have to tell you, I was laughing through most of this. Very enjoyable watch.
Dealing with incoming new things is so important! I’ve just started doing the dishes little by little before they can pile up and it’s life changing!! It used to be that by Wednesday, the dishes were too overwhelming to deal with so we’d let them pile up and finally deal with them Friday after work
It's so true about focusing on one area. My room was a mess but I hated it because I used to be so organized. Thankfully, cluttered not dirty eww. But once I just focused on one area per day it all got fixed and now I feel peace when in my bedroom. Everything is orderly. Thanks for the reaffirmation Matt.
I could never stand being messy. I have lots of "stuff" but it's all in designated and organized spaces. If it's not, I am distracted and unfocused unless those items are where they are supposed to be. Things I do: Linens: Towels folded an placed neatly in the linen cabinet. I limit myself to 3 bath towels and 3 hand towels. All the same colour and they are washed together every week. Electronics: This one is extremely important for me. I have lots of electronic stuff. I organized buckets where I roll and tie off all my cables and place accessories that I need from time to time. They are sorted on shelves in white buckets that keep things looking clean. I used to just leave the cables laying around which annoyed me more than I realized. Any electronic waste needs to be recycled at specific depots so from time to time, this can build up on me but it's always temporary. Camera / Lighting / Sound Equipment: This has become a challenge for me since I'm getting deeper and deeper into TH-cam and I've been buying more and more audio and video equipment. My biggest problem is the number of stands I have for green screens, light mounts, mics, camera mounts, etc. @Matt D'Avella The manfrotto folding boom stand you use has peaked my interest and could very well kill off 3 stands I currently use. I'm thinking on it but my mind keeps saying "Will it REALLY remove more stands or just add to the number you own? Are you sure?". Toys / Statues: I love my gaming statues and collector's editions and proudly display them. The rule here is, if I exceed the cabinet space, something needs to be given away. I also have LEGO which helps me clear creative blocks from time to time. So LEGO goes into these 3L buckets, sorted by colour, that I used to use for different types of flours, cornstarch, etc. Clothing: A lot of people have a tonne of clothing. I find this so odd. I have a single small dresser in my bedroom that houses all my non-shirt clothes. It has 3 drawers. Drawer 1: Socks. Drawer 2: Underwear, Drawer 3: Sweaters. I limit this stuff to those drawers. I'm even considering merging my socks and underwear drawer and maybe downsizing the dresser to a 2 drawer model. I've been purging my closet of old clothes. General Rule: If I haven't worn it in the last month, I donate it to charity. As of yesterday, I purged 33 shirts and all my dress pants (4 pairs). Paper: I detest paper clutter. Switching my bills to electronic email receipts helps immensely. For paperwork that I can't do that for, a small shredder works wonders and takes up little space. Digital Clutter: I've been pretty anal about this since I got my first computer in 1997. All my digital files go in specific folders religiously. My desktop only ever has the "recycling bucket" icon on it. My emails are all read and deleted or sorted into specific folders. If I know I don't need to look at the email receipt, I set up rules to "mark as read" and put it into it's designated folder automatically so I can reference it if I need to but otherwise I don't see it. All this said, there is STILL some clutter, but I actively work on it every weekend just like house cleaning. At first it was exhausting and stressful but it's like a well oiled machine now.
@@marshallfox1786 This is all stuff I do automatically and reflexively now, almost without thinking. In the beginning though, you are correct, I used to make notes for myself to do this stuff until it became habitual.
I need some of your ocd. I have a large warehouse with about 5 households of stuff in it. I had a declutter goal, then it got cold. Now I'm focusing on bringing in money for some important projects. Overwhelmed and still wanting a homey atmosphere. Lastly I started to limit my boyfriend time since he cannot help here. He lives an hour away and has a curfew with his landlords. I am grateful to have a friend help me clean occasionally, but she stashed away checks; fortunately the company reached out to us, family, and said we can request reissue, a few thousand dollars...mercy!! (When your friend loves declutter too much!!)
Great video. I love my routines! We do "tidy up Tuesdays" in our place where we clean the whole place in two hours. It is so much faster and more fun when we do it together.
A great tip for me, that you slightly touched on was curating my feeds. I stopped following big brands or ppl who were constantly working w big brands. I still follow some small obscure brands, but for the most part its greatly reduced the feed clutter
Get rid of the bed. You don't need it. Floor sleeping is great! I purchased a 1" closed cell foam pad cut for a single bed sized box spring topper. Turns out I don't even need a box spring..
Awang Budiman That’s what always limits multi day decluttering for me. When decluttering I put everything on my bed. Then I put things back where they should be, but there are always some stuff that I don’t have a good place for and that I don’t want to throw out. So in the end I need to sleep and put everything back and it’s cluttered again :/.
@@PatrikKron yes! Exactly as I do. I now have designated a small bin for those days when I'm too tired to organize the ransoms on my bed. I just throw it all into the bin and go through the bin the next day lol 😂
This is an excellent video. In fact, I really feel it’s my favorite video! I’m going to share it with my messy friends and others! Thank you Matt, you also gave me some of ideas to start on my own to organize my life.
Matt, your videos are so inspiring and aesthetically pleasing. I hope I keep taking inspiration from them and so do millions of others as well. Love your work.👍

@@labscience8271 oh wow never thought of that. I thought I was just taking what I get for free and passing it along. I hope.thats not "taking". I better re think this. Thank you for that😊.
I'm ready to purge my home of excess belongings. When I was a teenager clutter and mess didn't bother me. Now in my late twenties I've noticed that the more stuff I acquire correlates with me feeling overwhelmed or anxious. I just need to get my husband on board...can't really go throwing all your spouse's stuff out without causing some tension. I'm ready to throw all of our belongings (overwhelmingly clothing) onto the bed and sort away roughly 90% of the crap that comes out of the blackhole that is our master and spare bedroom closets. I've already tackled our girl's rooms - three tubs worth of clothing and a bin full of toys ready for a yard sale come spring. What doesn't sell will go directly to Goodwill. Their room is my favorite place now because it's so organized and feels so light. I want that feeling in my entire home.
I'm constantly trying to convince my wife to reform. My advice to her so far is: Use it or lose it and focus on quality over quantity. One in one out on new items which should be replacing something. Maximum 2 of anything (excluding items like underwear, socks or work shirts). Finally, don't forget "digital" clutter. Only keep and back up quality. When I was single my loft only consisted of empty luggage and a Christmas tree. Those days are long gone. I hope this helps fellow mild OCD people out there.
I threw everything away I either collected or were from my childhood. The childhood things I kept, because childhood is an oh so important part of your past... At some point I realized that I actually hate my childhood and that's when I decided to throw everything away, because these things were a heavy weight, except for the photos. I'm tired of owning things that actually have no usage for me, except for my CDs. All I own now is clothing, make up/beauty stuff, CDs, a lot of stationery stuff, crochet equipment, electronics, some jewelry and paper stuff. It feels awesome to declutter, organize and finding a way which suits you to stay organized. As you said, keep it as easy as possible!

I know many families where children break toys because the items have no value to them... it’s appalling!
Yes, some parents go a little looney with this.
One should only buy a few basic ones (we all know which they are), those that allow the child to invent stories.

This one is extremely important for me.
Camera / Lighting / Sound Equipment:
This has become a challenge for me since I'm getting deeper and deeper into TH-cam and I've been buying more and more audio and video equipment.
Toys / Statues:
I love my gaming statues and collector's editions and proudly display them. The rule here is, if I exceed the cabinet space, something needs to be given away. I also have LEGO which helps me clear creative blocks from time to time. So LEGO goes into these 3L buckets, sorted by colour, that I used to use for different types of flours, cornstarch, etc.
Clothing:
A lot of people have a tonne of clothing.
Paper:
I detest paper clutter. Switching my bills to electronic email receipts helps immensely. For paperwork that I can't do that for, a small shredder works wonders and takes up little space.
Digital Clutter:
I've been pretty anal about this since I got my first computer in 1997.
Good for u. I bet writing this out is like decluttering ur mind. It helps me to write notes for myself.
@@marshallfox1786 This is all stuff I do automatically and reflexively now, almost without thinking. In the beginning though, you are correct, I used to make notes for myself to do this stuff until it became habitual.
You must not have children..
It must be a nightmare to be have you as a partner
2:43 Legends say that was all Matt ever owned in his life
Great video. I love my routines! We do "tidy up Tuesdays" in our place where we clean the whole place in two hours. It is so much faster and more fun when we do it together.
been binging your content to get motivation to better my life and I'm starting decluttering tomorrow. thank you for inspiring me. i really needed it.
I keep coming back to this video. I think I come back to it almost two to three times a year.
A great tip for me, that you slightly touched on was curating my feeds. I stopped following big brands or ppl who were constantly working w big brands. I still follow some small obscure brands, but for the most part its greatly reduced the feed clutter
I loved your sense of humour. Subscribed.
Edit: And your eye color is AMAZING😻

“Keeping up with the Jones’ has recently moved to Instagram” ... so true.
My Changed LIFE nailed it.
I just love that you dont put ads for 2 reasons 1 no silly ads and 2 you can say whatever you want
These steps are so simple but also are exactly what I need to hear to make keeping a tidy home sound manageable!
If I remove surface areas in my room I will sleep on the floor because the bed will be used for storage instead.
Haha I do that anyway. I'm aweful
😂😂😂😂
@@PatrikKron yes! Exactly as I do. I now have designated a small bin for those days when I'm too tired to organize the ransoms on my bed. I just throw it all into the bin and go through the bin the next day lol 😂
I love these videos!! They are really interesting to watch and I learned a lot. :) Keep up the good work.
Love your work.👍
While I don't think I'll ever be a true minimalist, your videos have been very helpful in helping me get rid of things that I have accumulated over nearly 40 years now.
im new to minimal meaning and lifstyle, your channel is causing this switch in my way of thinking, very practical and love that you are what you preach definitly will be subscriving to you patreon matt. best wishes from honduras Latin America

I catch myself everytime and keep on getting back to this video haha...
Thank you so much patreons
Man, I just found your channel and by this time I already shared some of your videos with my girlfriend. Thanks a lot!
I collect shampoo and samples from hotel for our homeless shelter..the homeless shelter makes hygiene bags for them😊
So you're like Robin Hood :)
Taking from rich and giving to poor
Good idea, I’ll try to remember that
@@labscience8271 oh wow never thought of that. I thought I was just taking what I get for free and passing it along. I hope.thats not "taking". I better re think this. Thank you for that😊.
@@labscience8271 I only collect when I travel and it's left for me. Is that ok? Your opinion when be nice😊. Thank you
That’s really wonderful of you.
My advice to her so far is:
Use it or lose it and focus on quality over quantity.
Yes, yes... I love clean and simple. This tip about surfaces helped me a lot..
NEEDED to watch this, my room has been so messy recently
mind blowing, u changed the way im thinking now
“Some people just want to watch the world burn”
*me watching my floor burn to ashes because he told me to get rid of surfaces so I can’t put things in them*
Thank you so much for all your inspiration and tips for a better life. All of your videos have really helped me and being a college student, life is hectic and busy and hard so its nice to have some tips on how to make it easier.
I love that the only ads are for more Matt. 😀
I cracked up when you stole that toy from your nephew?! You so mean. Lol
