Do Arab men hate women? | Head to Head

  • "Why do they hate us?"
With these five words in a controversial magazine article, Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy shot to fame, unleashing a devastating critique of women’s rights in the Arab world.
In the season premiere of Head to Head , Mehdi Hasan challenges Eltahawy on her views regarding the status of women in Arab states.
Are Arab or Muslim societies inherently patriarchal? And how does the narrative of Islam as sexist play into geo-politics and Western stereotypes of the Middle East?
Joining the discussion is Dr Aitemad Muhanna of the London School of Economics’ Middle East Centre; self-proclaimed progressive Imam Dr Taj Hargey; and Dr Shuruq Naguib, a British-Egyptian academic from Lancaster University.

This woman who you admire is either very ill informed or deliberately misinforms the very naive and emotional Western audience.
For example, she constantly talks about FGM (female genital mutilation) in Islamic world. FGM is not an Islamic issue, it is a cultural issue which she does not (I think deliberately) mention. My background is Iranian, I am an atheist but I have to push back and say that there is no such a thing as FGM. In fact, I had never heard of it until I moved to Canada at the age of 20 and heard it from Oprah who, similar to this woman is very good at generalization without much research.
It would be beneficial for general audience to mention that some of the countries with high cases of FGM are not Muslim majority countries, e.g. Ethiopia, Ivory Coast and Uganda

I think the problem with people discussing this is that many people view it as racist or prejudice towards people of Muslim faith.... I feel like people need to open there eyes more and see what's right in front of them.
To be fair though Catholics, Christians, Jews, atheists, men, women, black, white, and so on, really aren't good at taking criticism without saying it's prejudice..... I myself am Catholic, but unlike some other catholics I can actually open my eyes, and listen to what people have to say, and sometimes there right.... Like when people criticize the Catholic church of being greedy.... It's true, and they talk a lot of nonsense as well.... It's just one of those things that will get better with time, but either way wish you luck finding the right one🥂

I have listened to many Muslim men on youtube talking about prospective wives, and wives, their daughters and sisters.... it was all too depressing. They certainly hate western women, but they seemed to despise Muslim women just as much. I listened to religious leaders advising fathers not to be in the same room as their little daughters incase they became aroused.... good grief this was their daughters!!!! Men laughing about how many wives they could have, and how to get rid of them. Little girls being married off when their bodies were too young to give birth. I could go on. There must be a high degree of mental health issues within the Muslim female community... but because of their circumstances never gets treated. One lady stated she had been abused physically and mentally for 45 years in her marriage.... she was simply told she would be rewarded after her death for perservering. Truly depressing, no one should have to endure this, when the UK has laws in place to protect women from physical and controlling behaviour.

The main arguments against her points were either "this is not real, because it doesn't happen to me or my friends" and "patriarchy and violence against women happens everywhere so why single out us". My husband's father was one of the richest men in Taiwan--even though he did lose his money later. I was hands down always better at writing than them. I think it was my father's doing. I'm not mad at Bob Dylan for the comment. I think we are overdue as a species to have evolved to be able to see our own humanity in others and treat them accordingly. And I have been indoctrinated with sexism as much as anyone, even though it's wrong, I find myself let down that there are no men fighting to defend and protect their own sisters and wives. When a culture encodes into law and sanctions the abuse and terrorism of its most vulnerable property, there is a toxic kind of self-hatred at work that I pray doesn't spread like disease. No one, anywhere, should stand by in silence frankly while a beautiful car has its gears stripped by a bad driver, or while a dog is beaten by its owner, or while people walk into a holy place with light clean carpets wearing outdoor shoes. If we can understand basic principles of care and respect, even for inanimate objects, we must account for how we treat humans, God's most beloved creation. How do we respond? We (me) play god and sit in judgement on each other but do nothing at all.

There are pros and cons to every side.
The quran's reference to the hijab is in verse 35:59 :
"O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful."
      And the bible's:
"And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for it is just as if her head were shaved. 6If a woman does not cover her head, let her hair be cut off. And if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.…"

lol man is the glory of god but woman is the glory of man?? Thats like saying my son looks like me but my daughter looks like my son - ??? who has the time for this nonsense? The bible was a book written a very very very long time ago. What do you think someone from 3000 years ago would think if you showed them the internet? It would definitely be some kind of witchcraft. And why are we worried about dishonoring our head when we can't even go a week without buying food covered in plastic if anything we need to be more concerned about dishonoring nature and the planet. Old books vs current relevant issues.

The host uses the fact some women support abusive men as an argument that men don't hate women. But that is like saying if an abused wife doesn't leave her husband it means he never abused her. Women with abusive spouses are groomed to think his abuse is their fault. They will blame a hubby's beating on personal failure and imperfection, or excuse it as work stress, drinking, or other external problems. They will often cover for him saying they walked into a door or fell down stairs in order to cover the abuse, and they are likely to remain cowering beside him even when they have support to leave. This doesn't mean they are not abused. It means they've been groomed into compliance and at a subconscious level have internalised the abusive teachings. The same is true for women who support terrorist hubby's, or Arab hubby's who mistreat, demean and restrict them.

A certain level of discipline is required to keep societies intact. A completely free Western society is on the verge of collapse with the entire family structure in shambles, high divorce rates, adultery rates, young girls selling themselves on sites like Only-Fans.
This is because Western females aren't disciplined anymore and are pampered too much, when their liberal parents tell them that they deserve everything, that is very dangerous, is the reason why everyone in the West is so entitled and materialistic, and can't form lasting relationships, leading them to be single and lonely, thus higher depression rates.

She has never experienced that so she does not know love hence she does not fight for your love or my love. I'd like to see a woman interviewing her. This would be more credible. If my English was better I would destroy her generalizing claims in a few minutes. Because it's absolute bs, what she's saying.
First of all, not all the Arabic speaking cultures are the same. There are s.c. Arabs from Maghreb to Sham (Syria&Iraq). There is a huge difference between those mentalities.
And a lot of Arab men may be more conservative than western men. But that doesn't mean, that they hate women. Japanese men are more traditional, too. Their wives stay at home, if they got children. Does this mean that they hate women???
As I was in a few Arab countries, like for example Morocco or Egypt, I noticed that simply education is important. A farmer from the village is not similar to an educated arabic man from the city. There's a big difference.

OMG! Loving this debate so much and I'm only half way through it. There were so many things to be learned here in regards to the topics tossed around in this room. But I just want to point out some "a-ha's" based on this event itself. Now you'll have to excuse the fact that none of what I'm enumerating has anything to do with the topic at hand but just an observation of the environment. Perhaps at a different time the discussion of the topic at hand can be made. In my observation, I noted:
    1) The room set-up was clearly designed for Mona to be the center where she can be seen and heard for when they "crucify" her for her essay.
    2) The only other important person in there sitting next to Mona is a man, armed with a writing pad, and ready to dismantle Mona with every question he had on hand.
    3) Mona and her man sat up higher than everyone else as a way for the man to show there's no one in that room equal to him or worthy enough to battle with Mona, only him and he alone.
    4) Mona's essay must have hit a sour nerve on the man because he looked angry and determined to make Mona suffer in front of the mass.
    5) The female "educators" in the panel seemed to have represented all women in the Arab world. However, you'r think they'd be happy with Mona but they were not. In fact, the veiled woman was highly offended that Mona's essay criticized her man or maybe all Arab men.
    6) Every bullet of question shot at Mona was deflected quickly and with wisdom. It didn't matter how big or how multi-dimension the bullet was - Mona was consistent, determined and passionate about her responses.
    7) Was Mona in a wheel-chair? If she was, well the man surely did not feel any pity for her rather he was determined to dismantle Mona and her ideologies in front of the mass.
    8) Now it's common sense that when a writer put out an article or essay they generally write in terms of generalities not targeting a specific person but rather speak in general terms such as "most people" or "generally" or "they", etc.,. So I couldn't understand why the panel kept using the terms "stereotypes" or " not all Arab men are such", etc., which I thought we ALL KNEW that to be the case.
    9)
The mere fact that her controversial article was printed via an American press made me extremely proud of our FREEDOM here in the USA....not saying we are a perfect country but I will say our country is THE BEST when it comes to rights of women and men. The best in the world. Of course, I'm talking in general terms. I'm a proud American.
