  • Has the Arab Spring turned into an Islamist winter?
Mehdi Hasan challenges Islamic intellectual Tariq Ramadan on the principles and practice of political Islam.
Together they dissect the Arab revolts, focusing on Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood’s rise and demise, and the subsequent military coup.
So, has political Islam failed in Egypt? Did the Muslim Brotherhood miss its chance? And should the West be wary of Islamism?
Joining the discussion are: Anas Altikriti, a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and president and founder of the Cordoba Foundation; Yasmin Alibhai Brown, a journalist and the founder of British Muslims for Secular Democracy; and Professor Alan Johnson, from the pro-Israeli lobby group, BICOM.

In my humble opinion, I think Mehdi Hassan loves hearing himself talk (check Mona Eltahawy's "Do Arab men hate women?")
Instead of easing his guests into the process, Mehdi, becomes aggressive in his approach and continuously defends what he perceives as right while not giving his guests time to answer the questions he is asking. He constantly interrupts which leads the guests to start arguing amongst themselves instead of having an objective and analytical debate.
While Mehdi seems quite emotional and oversensitive in his approach, Tariq Ramadan displays cognitive biases and rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos and logos) in his responses which in turn makes his arguments logical and credible.

    • @AquaTophana
      @AquaTophana 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That may be true but at several occasions, Mehdi Hassan reminded its guests that he was there to challenge them. You can see in many interviews that those guests are not letting Mehdi do as he pleases.

A very good debate. We all have different views and it is a learning process for us as human species to understand the complexity in the different faiths and religions of the society. That we get together and communicate and debate is in itself the true example of brotherhood amongst all faiths. Yes it will be a long process and a very long journey before we reach the common ground . But that would not be the final destination because the world changes everyday and so is the society. New times will bring new questions and hope we meet together to debate as we do today. Because the problem is not when you don’t have the answers: problem is when Questions are not asked. Because only then we will have a solution. Peace be with you.

Today he brought up, yet no Muslim women came up with the idea of raising voices, which simply meant they are afraid to speak up becz they want to keep Islamist religion in defence.(said by every escape Muslim women immigrants) N sharia law is not just about stoning women to death, but real punishment (jailed and tortured) for not obeying her husband, jailed for singing in public, jailed for going to bars, jailed for not properly covered herself, n announced a girl a complete women by age 9 with a certificate which means that she can b selled to a men n to accept all punishment. 1) Why would anyone want to be governed by a text that can be so easily misinterpreted? Surely that would increse the chance of corruption.
    2) Why would anyone want to be governed by laws that cannot change/evolve? The secular freedoms we enjoy today took hundreds of years to evolve; just imagine if progress was impeded by religious law.

The answer lies in learning lessons from what has happened in Western societies... once the West got rid of spirituality for a vague notion of 'freedom' and 'progress' they have a society devoid of any higher values...they have reduced human beings to the level of animals...40 % children born out of wed-lock in Britain and other places in the West is the beautiful progress and freedom that you have got in return for leaving God...
Western society with all its progress is doomed without spirituality ...

I must say I'm a little divided about prof. Tariq's closing statement (47:05) where he says that he's 'done on any discourse about "integration"' and that he's 'opening to door to contribution"'. I don't understand why it cannot be both.
If I go to live and work in another country (as I plan to in the future), I want to both learn and get enriched by my surrounding culture as well as being able to give back. It's not a one-way street. If you shutting the door on "integration" or "assimilation" as Tariq suggests then this means turning this natural process of an exchange of cultures into a one-way system where one culture insist on only "contributing" but is not willing to really value the culture they want to live amongst.

I think if you look more broadly on the message he conveyed consistently throughout the debate, it was more along the lines of integration not translating into abandoning one's own culture, morals, or ethics in favor of another. He stressed the 3 L's (Law, Language, etc) and understanding the framework of another nation or country.

My "point" is that it is futile to argue that one religion is apparently less oppressive than another when the fact is that all of them have been used to oppress women (and other groups). To think that Christianity is somehow inherently more progressive than Islam or other religions is laughable! Whatever progress has been made is because women & men have fought tirelessly for it. And it helped that in the West people didn't need to ALSO recover and rebuild their societies from scratch after the devastation caused by years of colonialism, like in other parts of the world.

Very good debate. But the main problem I've always had with Tareq Ramadan is the timeline that he gives himself and the Muslim scholars to debate the scriptures and come back with a solution. This will never be done! There are still Christians who believe the crazy parts in the Bible, we don't need to debate them, we just move past them and vote democratically our laws. This is the problem with Islamists, they can't let go of the Qoran when talking legislation.

@@najmaalikhan The Quran is a poorly plagiarized version of the old and new testament written by an illiterate businessman in 7th century Arabia, and as such, can be seen as an extreme form of Jewish and Christian heresy. The civilization his violent conquests spawned went into decline around the 13th century and subsequently, Arabic culture hasn't been at the forefront of human advancement for over seven hundred years.
Mohammad may have had some ideas that were helpful 1,400 years ago, but the political philosophy contained in the Quran and Hadith is objectively inferior to secular liberal political philosophy, as can be seen by the results that each achieve when implemented.

You can be ethical without being religious. Extremism in any religious form, Islam, Christian or Jewish is a threat to political, social and economic stability of everyday people who just want to live their lives independently of the desire for power--or a forced adherence to a strict set of rules and norms upon pain of imprisonment, torture and death. Religion needs to be separate from governance but still an individual or social (group) freedom as banning it outright does not work either, and such a ban will too create instability.

    A quote from Tariq Ramadan.
"My brothers and sisters, we must exploit the so-called democracy and freedom of speech here in the West to reach our goals. Our Prophet Muhammad and the Koran teach us that we must use every conceivable means and opportunity to defeat the enemies of Allah. Tell the infidels in public, we respect your laws and your constitutions, which we Muslims believe that these are as worthless as the paper they are written on. The only law we must respect and apply is the Shari’a." Obviously, Tariq Ramadan is an enemy of our entire civilization and people. He must be exposed for what he is.
Tariq Ramadan was born in Geneva, Switzerland on 26 August 1962 to an Egyptian Muslim family. He is the son of Said Ramadan and Wafa al-Banna, who was the eldest daughter of Hassan al Banna, who in 1928 founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Gamal al-Banna, the liberal Muslim reformer is his great-uncle. His father was a prominent figure in the Muslim Brotherhood and was exiled by Gamal Abdul Nasser from Egypt to Switzerland, where Tariq was born.

Moreover, it's imperative that Democracies keep track of the number of Muslims being allowed to immigrate. Their Quran demands they spread Islamic ideology by any means necessary. Muslims hate this cartoon because it was prophet Muhammad story, it has become a debate in our contemporary society today, it is very disturbing now, this is really a nice cartoon but the Muslims do not like it i remember someone publish a picture on the news paper claiming to be Prophet Muhammad in my country and this led to the killings of innocent people. i want you to know that cartoon like this gives us the true interpretation of Islam that is really why i except people who are Muslim to read their Quran themselves to understand it, what its says word by word then admit that there are mistakes or violent part of it in other to correct them. the beauty of Islam starts from the Muslim brotherhood which actually present them in the society as threat but i believe that Islam has a beauty that we need to see and be sure that it is the truth, Muslim make us love your religion and stop making us to hate your religion. 1. have respect for women please for once
    2. don't force anybody to join your religion
    3. stop beheading people in the name of punishment
    4. stop the bombing in the name of Allah
    5. stop killing christian and jew for sake of Allah
look there are many of it and seriously let me tell you that Islam could be a great religion if you can correct this problems and people will be converted willingly than force to be converted. your life and way of life should say who you are in the society.
