  • 101 East investigates how every year, tens of thousands of girls and women in India are trafficked into slave marriages.
    10 Nov 2016 23:05 GMT International Women's Day, India, Human trafficking, slavery
    Decades of sex selection favouring male babies have left some Indian states with vastly more men than women, creating a lucrative and growing market for traffickers.
    In the patriarchal and feudal state of Haryana where there's a shortage of women to marry, it's normal for men to buy young girls trafficked from other states.
    Known as "paros", a term implying they can be purchased, they are regularly raped, forced into marriages and made to work as bonded labour.
    Their uneducated families are often tricked into agreeing to send them away, lured by the idea of a happy marriage for their daughters. But tragically, there is no "happily ever after".

      Please don't shame the families... They live in a place where their dignity is solely judged based on women's marital status and the society that influences them... In most of the Indian rural community when a girl gets married she becomes a property of her husband, in suck kind of places if a girl runs away from her abusive husband, or if the family takes away their married daughter from her husband; both the girl and their whole family will be ridiculed and ostracized by their community.
      So we should not just blame the family but the whole community as well.

      @kalpana gupta you probably belong to a select privileged class which explains your views but the sad irony of india is while there are successful women like Kalpana Chawla (from Haryana as well) and even yourself, there are countless other women who have suffered or continue to suffer the plight. Next time you visit India go and see for yourself and you will realise how lucky you are and how your family empowered you as opposed to these souls. Its not even a question of poverty or lack of knowledge but a general mindset against women in some indian societies. And the ones documented here are not even a fraction of the real cases just like rape cases in India, most rape cases are not even registered or accounted for.

    • @ManpreetSingh-kz1zu
      @ManpreetSingh-kz1zu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @kalpana gupta well maybe rape cases don't reflect society but the way society reacts to rape cases tells a lot like the hathras case and innumerable cases before and after where the authority and society just reacts in such an inhumane way that you're left wondering that WTF is wrong with people. Secondly I'm not talking about you being some rich brat to be counted as privileged, maybe i too belong to the same economic strata as you but even i consider myself to be lucky that my family was able to provide decent education and means, in a country where its hard to come by. I'm happy for you whatever you have achieved but still madame think about it. Every one goes through a lot of struggle and cannot be compared by any parameters but still people like you and me are still lucky that we could make it work.

Her mother would have gladly taken her back but if she left, she’d most likely never find another husband since her reputation would be ruined.... so she’s stuck with the one she has and if she seemed overly welcoming to her mother her husband and his family would be angry and likely punish her severely. Any female taken by deceit & against her will to be "married" by force to some male is RAPED by that male. "Marriage" is not the right to rape, but it seems that is exactly what Indians think it is.

    Starting at: 21:20
    Absolutely heartbreaking.
    After such a very long time, heartache, fear along with tears to fill a pool, her daughter is finally found.
    Instead of joy, the daughter reluctantly embraced her mom and rejected her. Upset because her mom had the police involved. I'm not sure what to make of this. Was the daughter mentally unbalanced or pretending, fearing her husband and in-laws if she left with her mom? Or did she mean it? If she had willingly wanted to marry him, then why later claim she went unwilling?
    So so sad for her mom.
    The mom looked so confused, her anguish of being rejected by the daughter that she was so desperate to take back home was all for nothing.

    • @aanchalkimtani6682
      @aanchalkimtani6682 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The thing is Indians kind of think that if police arrives at someone's place , it is a threat to their honour. That is the reason why she is upset with her mother. You can see in the background a mob of persons who have gathered. These people usually gossip and spread the news in the neighborhood, among relatives , etc because traditionally marriages do not happen in India only with the couple's consent, instead the entire family is involved. This gives people a chance to speak bad about the couple and their families..

    • @aanchalkimtani6682
      @aanchalkimtani6682 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You can also see towards the end how the husband tried to please the mother in law but she does not approve of their relationship. In the Indian society it is really not very common for children to have relationships and marriage with someone of their choice without the will of their parents. That is also the reason why she says," baadme jayegi Ghar" meaning she won't visit her parents immediately but will do so after some days...

    You live in the Anthropocene Era. This modern age has no space or respect for slavery. You should save every slave.

      @@AadamSaleem0 When did anyone say all men?? We're talking about the FACT that men are the majority of the problem right now, and basically always have been. Of course women and men should equally respect each other, but when one side has more privilege than the other, and they're using that privilege as a weapon, it needs to be talked about more than the side that does minor damage.

      @@brandib7116 I would like to say that as a Indian male who's parents want a arranged marriage eventually (no bidding or slavery at least) to some women who I've probably never met before no one stops to ask how we feel, what you are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg. Often men don't love the women either and its familial pressure, I'm still not sure whether to accept my fate or try to avoid it. And I apologize for bad grammar
