Man, you are so right about mic locations. I finally learned this like 3 weeks ago with Dirac. Kept getting crummy responses after RC and finally it occurred to me to stop giving it info it doesn’t really need. So kept the measurements tight to LPs, and also gave it two points behind the chairs that had bad peaks that were causing some bad rattle. Results were so good.
I only ever do 3 measurements. Middle of couch, left couch seat and right couch seat. That's where you sit, that's where you want it to sound the best.
@@RichardNutman That's probably the case most of the time. Dirac seems to do a better job with the more points you give it though. Also, boomy bass and room rattle bug the hell out of me so i found benefit in finding peaks in areas outside of the listening area and including them in the calibration. But I wouldnt think you could go nuts with that without hurting the listening positions.
@@danielwander605 Yeah I think so, you may end up cutting out some frequencies when the mic was in an anti-node, that would've sounded fine on the couch. I think the many positions thing is more for normal living rooms with chairs at the side. A single couch in front of the listening position most likely doesn't benefit from any additional mic positions.
@@RichardNutman Its a balancing act for sure. Lot of trial and error. In the end i was willing to give up a little at my MLP to stomp out the boom-iness behind me. I found it to be a much more enjoyable experience.
I've been listening to music for 50yrs. And Sr. What you just taught me in this 35min. tutorial. I didn't have a life time of knowledge stored in my heads worth. I hope you get what lm tring to say. Thank you and looking forward for more tutorials from your channel 😊
Thank you. This helped a lot. I had no clue about some of those features. My home theater opened up after I adjusted reference level to opposite of the mistake in this video and turned on dynamic Eq and turned off mid range compensation.
for me, turning off mid-range compensation was the game-changer. I had multiple people listen with it on and then off and they all said it sounded much better off. Not a little better...MUCH better. I can't stress enough just how messed up of a decision it was for Audyssey to do this by default. I am on my 5th Marantz for over 20 years and I can't believe that my receivers were way better than I ever knew because they were purposely messing things up. If anybody watching this has a Marantz or Denon, please buy this app and turn that off. You will thank me.
I agree it's a mistake for them to blindly place the dip on peoples speakers. It's Audyessy though not really Marantz as it's two different companies .
@@hometheatergurus yeah that's true and I corrected it. I am still and always will be a fan of Marantz. I did try the curtain at 500Hz and only heard a slight difference, but still preferred no curtain. That was with the 6014. I just got the 7705 so I will give it another shot but at 300 this time like you said
@@m4nc1n1 yeah you always experiment with it. The important thing is to understand how it all works so you aren't led to belive running auto setup and calling it done is giving you the best sound.
@@hometheatergurus I ran a 10 to 120 sweep with REW and I have a bad dip at 63 and 93 (roughly) So I Just ordered the mini DSP 2x4 HD to integrate with my 2 subs. Also watched your videos. Wish me luck lol
Many thanks for the tips, Steven. Using the Audyssey app to restrict EQ above 400hz is a great tip, and certainly something I’d have never thought of. I set the app to ignore any EQ above 399hz on my Marantz SR7011 with my Bowers and Wilkins 600 series speakers. Although subtle, I’m pretty sure that my speakers are now performing better. I tested this in A/B style with a song I know well and the results seemed positive. Thanks again. 🙏🤩
Can’t thank you enough for this video. I was doing everything you said here already except for one critical thing...limiting the frequency at which Audyssey was applied. Game changing to the sound and I finally feel ok using it now.
I thanked you on your Atmos speaker placement video, and now I’m thanking you on this video as well! Followed your instructions on our new systems first calibration and holly crap it sounds amazing. Thank you for all your hard work, professionalism and pragmatic REAL WORLD advice that’s backed up by logical thinking and deep knowledge and research but explained in a way that makes sense. It’s so great that you are going against the old wisdom and thinking about the mistakes people have made in the past and fixing it for all of us. The customers you have that are close enough to use you are very lucky. Cheers from New Zealand.
Couple of questions... 1) I plan to use a miniDSP HD to set up 3 subs in my room. After that procedure and getting the subs working well together, I wonder about applying Audyssey correction and if it might screw up the results obtained from the miniDSP. Should the editor app be used to disable EQ for the sub channel so that Audyssey doesn't affect the work done with the miniDSP? Or, should the Audyssey correction be applied to the sub(s) "on top" of the miniDSP calibration? 2) When calibrating the sub with the miniDSP, should I shoot to calibrate to a house curve with the bass boosted? The reason I ask is that I plan to use Dynamic EQ in Audyssey. Since that boosts bass at lower than reference volumes, would calibrating to a flat curve work better than a house curve if planning to use Dynamic EQ? Thoughts and opinions are appreciated!
Thank you very much. I followed the wrong advice and changed the distance on my sub from what the room correction had it set at. Can't want to fix it. I appreciate all the knowledge you share with us all!
@@hometheatergurus Indeed, part of it because people do not know... and they would socialize their interpretation. Your advice has been the best and I am personally following it to the letter.
In my situation I had to change both my subwoofer distance settings 3 to 4 feet further. This gave me a much better allignment. I measured this with REW. I've got a 7.2.4 setup. (dual svs sb1000)
@@PETROL_Ted78 If you want this to be "scientifically accurate" and take out the trial and error measurements, you can use REW 's Alignment Tool. Take your center speaker measurement @80Hz and your virtual sub measurement @80Hz and click on "Align phase at cursor"
@@hometheatergurus Im sure you’re gonna show it later in you videos. But do you fill all that stud space with insulation. Do you then double your sheetrock with something like green glue? And will you double on the inside or both.
When you say to Just run mic from your three main listening spots, ok so where do I put the mic for spots 4 5 6 7 8 etc, do I keep just running the mic from spots 1 2 3 over again PLEASE HELP Tim
Pausing at 12:30 to comment: I don't know about anyone else, but while my Onkyo TX-NR709 will automatically go to Reference for Level Cal, my Denon 4400 and Onkyo TX-NR656 will not. I have to manually turn them up once the test tones begin.
The Marantz and denon are automatic. You don't do anything but hit next and move the mic. The volume is set internally during setup for the setup procedure.
@@hometheatergurus Let me take a step back as I don't want to confuse people watching your channel. During Audyssey calibration, there's no option to adjust the volume. I was referring to just doing the Test Tones when checking levels.
@@budgetaudiophile6048 The antique Denon AVR-591 that I run works the same way. And, when I set all channels to 75dB I have to turn down my LR surrounds -4dB because they end up louder than the fronts. I believe that is only because they are closer to me. But, I'm far from an expert at this stuff.
Great vid! Denon says that you should not limit FR to 300hz because: "There is a belief that room correction should only be applied to frequencies below 300 Hz because that is the frequency range in which most of the room problems occur. This belief is based on an inherent assumption that a properly designed loudspeaker will perform as desired at higher frequencies and thus require no correction. This is not at all contradictory to MultEQ XT. If the loudspeaker is in fact properly designed then no correction will be applied to it. One simple fact that the proponents of this theory seem to overlook is that even the best designed loudspeakers will suffer from artifacts at high frequencies produced by reflections from nearby flat surfaces such as display screens, furniture or cabinets. MultEQ XT performs this kind of correction when it is needed to allow the loudspeaker to achieve the performance it was designed to have." So what to do?
Thanks, we cover this in the video and explain why you may not want to do full eq based on a few spots in the room that you may or may not always listen at. Try it and see what you like.
It was said that the multeq filter range actually only starts at about 250hz below the frequency you kept it as the software tries to even it out from the original response to the audyssey response and only uses the frequences specified underneath the one you have given it, so to compensate that we put it at 500-600 range for correction .
Firstoff, that KS for this informative video. I'm confident it's what I needed to get my setup to sound like it should. However, in going back through after adding a sub, I am struggling to get my subs to register at 75db (even with gain/volume turned up fully) to get Audyssee started. Mic was 3" in front of the sub before it would get above 50DB, yet the whole house was rattling. Any tips? Can I effectively run Audyssee without the subs? I am missing out on some of the control that let me hear dialogue at lower levels!
Great to see you back pushing out helpful content! Been waiting on the app covering a long time :) Will there be a deeper dive with the app when your room is built? Would love to see it more in depth and in combination with rew and minidsp. Looking forward to see the build coming together soon, all the best of luck and thanks for another great video!
Yea subs are all handled by miniDSP. Watch episode 7 for complete walkthrough. Actually, watch every episode 5 times because they all matter and the information is so dense. Just finished my theatre and these videos were so helpful. House curve is set up with miniDSP but also make sure YPAO volume or the Marantz/Denton equivalent is turned on for bass management while listening at more comfortable, lower levels.
Keep in mind if you're going to run room correction after the REW/MiniDSP work you'll eq for a flat response in the MiniDSP as that's what room correction will eq to. Then use Dynamic eq or the editor app to apply the house curve.
The sound mixer should be the one making the distant sounds have les highs, not your receiver with the reference setting. how i understand it, that logic would make everything sound more distant. and not everything in a movie is. it is a good tool to get a little more smooth sound for longer listening sessions though! so not useless, just dont think your logic ad up. That said! i have learnd a ton of you! keep up the good work! love how deep and nerdy you go into every aspect! love it!
You aren't making it sound farther than it should be. All sound does this as it travels. It's been proven over an over that a natural sound has a house curve. It is not flat. Even at distances in our rooms. Mixing studios use curves as well. What we're doing will not negate the sound guys work. We're ensuring our rooms sound comfortable and accurate. That said do what sounds good to you.
I just realised it is the curve that would be the one in the listening posission. Not at the speaker. Because making it flat at listening possision is of course boosting treble not letting it naturally roll of.. And making it not flat at the speaker. Then it makes sens. I for some reason tought it sendt a roll off curve from the speakers making it "double" effect in the Room if you have a large room. Sorry for your answer!
@@larskvaloy we all have a moment where it clicks and it all makes sense. Nothing wrong with challenging someone when it's not adding up. I have moments like that too.

Steve, thanks for this great video. Just one question about measuring. When you say don't measure six spots, what I do then, measure 3 spots first and repeat the other 3 again, in the same order ?
Cool ... I saw your added explanation on Dynamic EQ but I know that one was made for Dynamic Volume but I can't find it. I have both features on my Marantz receiver and have played around with it over time. At first I turned both off and the sound was decent. I decided to experiment. Dynamic EQ acts like a loudness control except that it is dynamic meaning that it changes depending on where you have the volume. It mostly boost the subwoofer and the surround speakers. That's great if you want more sound out of those speakers and useful if you mostly listen at lower levels. Dynamic Volume is a compression tool. It is not there to cut low freqs of high freqs. What it actually does is remove peaks while boosting lower sounds. So the big explosions in films are reduced. At the same time you can hear more subtle things in films such as a scene where ice cubes drop in a glass or raindrops hitting.
Very interesting about the LPF. I've been reading a thread on AVSforum that states otherwise. They also advocate running a second steeper LPF with miniDSP(48dB slope) as most users tend to boost the last 2 octaves much higher than the mains/surrounds. This has a purpose to lower chestiness in vocals from center channel and also to improve midbass impact. Anyways, super fun to experiment and thanks for an awesome channel. Can't wait to see the house build.
There's always going to be others doing something different. Measure and get a nice smooth transition and enjoy. Chestiness would be seen in the response.
Great Video!! I have a question regarding Audyssey and sub calibration. I followed your REW video Ep 7 (Great video as well!) and wondered how you keep Audyssey from changing your calibrated Sub results? Or do you recommend doing the calibration and then running Audyssey and going with it? Thanks!!
Sure. That would be a good one as there's a lot more to it especially with how it effects the speaker than most think. Once the house is done I'll start knocking stuff like this out.
I am curious about this as well. My main listening position is in the back row but still want my front row to sound as good as possible. What do you guys recommend?
I follow and I watch every of your videos, I am home theater and also stereo enthusiast. You wrote no more 2inches the left and right. 2 inches is 5cm are u sure is really close to mlp I don’t think if that makes a difference in-line try today and tomorrow, the results with xt32 was far better than my previous xt night n day. I ll try your way but still believe 2 inches is close .
@@georgep2301 Most likely because where you are measuring, is a bad spot in your room. It could also be that you are reading the frequency curve wrong. It requires a bit of knowledge to understand what is actually happening on the graph.
@@georgep2301 it's no more than 2 feet, not 2 inches. However if you have modal issues due to poor seating and or sub placement you will not get great results. The video is asummijg you've watched previously videos to properly setup the room.

Awesome video as always... just found your channel a few days ago and have already learned more clear, easy to understand information than ever before! A quick question, and apologies if it's already been answered and I missed it... Once you set the Audessey app limiter at 300hz (or whatever) and upload to the receiver, do you then need to run the calibration again, or does the receiver automatically implement the change and you can just leave it be? Thanks!
Love it! Had to hop on a conference call so had to pause half way through but finished it up and I love this episode! This will be one I refer back to frequently. I just purchased some new toys for the theater so once those are in and calibrated I'll have to mess around with audyssey (especially using that limiter) to see how well we can get that set up! I'm so excited!
Thank you for the tutorial. You mentioned only taking measurements at the main 3 seating positions. Do you recommend only taking 3 measurements or 8 measurements within the 3 main seating area ?

Thanks for your content, it is so useful, in-depth and properly explained! I only recently discovered your vids. Subscribed 👍🏻 Question: why was there music edited in when you were talking about the DynEQ offsets? I’d really like to know what to shoot for there. Thanks again!!
Thanks! I had a brain fart and the only fix post upload was to drown it out but if you notice, during the music at the top I have a link pop up to the correction.
@@hometheatergurus Ah! Thanks, just watched that 👍🏻 Do you find that 0db offset boosts the bass and surrounds a little too much or not?(without any additional boost to the trim levels of course)
I used all these until I treated my room (only first reflection, too) and set a room curve with mini-DSP 2x4 HD. Now, I turn off Multi EQ and Dynamic EQ, which sounds fantastic! A huge veil was lifted. And don't even get me started on mid-range compensation! And I have been saying for years that cutting Audyssey off after 3 positions were superior. But now it does not matter because it just sets my trim and distance since I turn off Multi EQ. I still turn it on Reference once and awhile and in 2 minutes I am like nope, lol

Hi thank you for this explanation and logic with microphone placement its something i always thought about why am i placing the microphone in a known dead spot in my room well thats what the picture shows so i guess ill do it anyway what should i do with dynamic range compression in Dolby digital mine is default to auto is that the same as dynamic eq what should dynamic range compression be set to
I use a camera tripod for my audyssey microphone. It's measuring tiny vibrations in the air, so no sense in putting on cardboard tripod/cushion that wobbles.
Thank you.Last night I tested the D eq “on“ at +10db and dynamic volume off then I played around with LFC cause my neighbors is a little bit close and I have to say that I enjoyed the movie a lot it was outstanding , of course thank God I could upgrade my receiver and I have the xt32 audyssey. Cause with my previous one xt was a disaster. The other think I have to do is to take measurements with audyssey mic as you described in previous videos with 2’ from center mlp and not follow the audyssey’s directions. In the matter of the speaker angle, do they have to be in equal angle for both ? I got 3 listening positions Ingot umik and I want measure. Also what to do if the mlp distance is longer than the distance in between the speakers and don’t make perfect triangle in anyway?i cant go mlp closer to speakers I can’t spread the speaker more ..
🖐👋🖐👋 24:40 STOP! respect the need for midrange dip! Most speakers have one, it's an important tuning by the manufacturer. But you want it in the right location! Observe the green line here from the original sound signature data, it's touching the 2khz mark but appears to dip from there to 4khz, (maybe) 🤷♂you can't see the lines on the gragh for some reason here). Anyway, turn midrange comp OFF with this speaker, and then use the curve editor to make the correct dip at 3khz... 👍 I have an Elac and 5.1.2 setup here with polk heights, all my speakers have very distinct dips right at 2khz, but my center it's closer to 1k, so , midrange comp left ON for all speakers except the center , which is set to off with a custom 1.3khz dip using the curve editor. I tried the mid comp off , and it 'was' bad, this is noticably better! 👍 And nothing to do with speakers 'sucking'! Many of the most expensive 2way speakers in the world have a dip at the crossover and often at 2khz, it's there for a reason! You REALLY should retract the "if your speakers don't suck loose the dip comment" it's misinformation, put this in the description!! Otherwise your the man I appreciate ya! thanks for the video
@@hometheatergurus bro your speaker literally has a dip a t 2.2khz almost twice as deep as the Audessey dip! it's found with most well designed speakers to reduce harsh phasing at the woofer - tweeter crossover point
@@hometheatergurus look up the most expensive speakers commonly known to man the- " Focal Grande Utopia EM Evo loudspeaker Lab Report " or " BnW CM1s " speaker curve there usually lots of dips, but the crossover dip matters!
what if we have some very good Towers with double woofer and big center that are even better or let me say more quality linear response from 40 - 100hz and a single Subwoofer that has a bad Null response arround 47-50hz maybe for a room mode maybe because it's a more budget sub .. isn't it better to let the Front work together with the Sub in LFE+Main and set to Large fronts ? thx
Room modes exist due to walls not the cost of the sub. It could be a $300 sub or a $6000 sub and the same mode will exist. If you have a null the sub or seat should be moved to avoid it or fix it, dual subs should also be a minimum. See ep 10.
Hey Guru, every time I watch your reviews, my home theater improves so thank you for all these amazing reviews. Once room correction is done - do you recommend using sound meter, set volume level to 0 db and set all the speakers volume to 70-75 dB to match all speakers? Audessy always sets these db values low.
Thanks! you can but it's usually very close to being set for reference. I do go back and measure to make sure the speakers are matched to each other which IMO is more important. For instance if one main is 2db louder than the other main and center that would be an issue.
Question about setting mains to small is that my towers have powered subwoofers built into them. Is it okay to them have mains set to large or change them to small? I also assume setting them to small would meam the powered subs wo t be used. The tower subs are each 165 watt and I have my velodyne at the rear of my room. Thx
If they're capable subs with an Lfe input run the towers small but run an Lfe input to the subs plate amp. In other words Treat them as independent subs. See ep 9 for more info about this and sub setup in general.

Hi,an important question for me and maybe for the others too. In the Audyssey app you can also limit the sub, the sub is now to 250Hz. According to the specifications for Klipsch SPL-120, the frequency response is 24Hz-125Hz. Do I have to limit the sub to 125Hz in the Audyssey app or not? I have limited all speakers to 500Hz and they sound great. Thanks for your video.
Awesome and glad you liked the limiter results. The sub is limited when we set the LFE HPF shown in this episode as well as bass management crossovers also shown. Watch ep 9 and you'll be all set on subs and realize how much bad info you've been told!
I totally understand liking Dynamic EQ (it does add impact). But, if we tuned our subs with REW and MiniDSP with a house curve, activating Dynamic EQ would then double up on the house curve for the subs, right??
If you follow ep 7 we didn't eq to a house curve if we are following with room correction, we only did a house curve in rew if we weren't using room correction. If using room correction we eq flat to prepare for room correction. It's all in ep 7.

You set Reference Level Offset to 15db -- is it because your Master Volume is at -15db or because you think RLO 15 is "enough" of a house curve? Perhaps RLO 15 is good for music and TV while RLO 0 for movies.
I know it would probably be a huge amount of recording time invested but it would be cool to see you going through all the steps from all your videos with your new theater room. While I don’t have a dedicated room or matching subs I do plan to go through your sub level matching and rew videos soon when my miniDSP comes in
The Audyssey app is good, but do you find that it boosts your bass? I thought I was doing something wrong, but no matter what I do, it always boosts my bass frequencies, up to 5db's in some places. It only happens when calibrating through the app, but never when calibrating through the AVR, so it's definitely something with the app.
I came across a video on here someone suggesting setting the filter frequency range of the subwoofer from 250hz to 20hz so audyssey doesn’t do anything with the bass since a lot of people say audyssey kills bass. Would that make sense to do?
@@hometheatergurus yea I’m still confused by it but I tried it and for some reason the bass feels better. If I go back to 250hz it feels weaker at the same db and sound level. Idk 😭 lol
Thanks for this video. This is your best one yet. I hope your home build is going very well. I'm going to run Audyssey on my 10yo Denon again this weekend with your advice here. My question for you is: I have speakers on the smaller side. Why would we not set bass to LFE + Main? Thank you.
@@hometheatergurus Thanks. I'll have to rewatch your series again. I've asked the folks at Denon to do the same video that you have done here weeks ago. So, congrats! You beat them to it. However, it's unlikely that they ever will, as usual.
Say I want to align and EQ my subs using a Mini DSP and REW and then use Audyssey so I can use Dynamic EQ and all that. How would I do that the best way?
Just found this video after reading recommendations for ages, i upgraded earlier this year to a denon x2800 from a x2300, I always used 8 positions on the audyssey app with both avrs and a tripod for measurements since for the last couple of years, I did just use to use cushions as recommended. Audyssey killed dialogue on the 2800h and the sound at times sounded flat even with setting audyssey to only equalize to 400-500hz, I had to have dialogue enhancer on high. I thought I would give your recommendations a quick do, I just ran 3 positions on top of cushions and set audyssey to equalize to 310hz, my system is so much better and I no longer have to turn dialogue enhancer on at all.
Hey Steve, thanks for the great video!!! If a person is in a treated room, followed all of your videos including a proper setup using REW and MiniDSP, is there ANY point at all in using MultEQ and Audyssey? I don't think so but wanted your confirmation.
It's definitely optional at that point but without using audyssey you can fix and modal areas above the subs Dynamic eq also does some boosting and response shaping of the surrounds and rears which many like so I'd recommend trying it out.
Can confirm that if one does the recommended placement in a 3,5 seater sofa running the full 8 recomanded position Audyssey xt32 it will probably "crash" Audyssey. To avoid crash, keep to a so small area as you can. And keep it on a line. Usually you only need to run 3 position measurements (Audyssey xt32) for the room correction to understand the room. I only run 5 well placed positions. 2 of them are exactly where left ear and right ear are in the sweetspot. 1 position at the tipp of the nose, and 2 at shoulder with.
Hi. After running the app, it gives me a value of 250 Hz for the subwoofer. Should I limit it to a new value, as I did with the other speakers with the MultEQ filter frequency range ?
hey gurus - audyssey question: i have a denon 1611. after running auto setup, i'm getting some midrange null where i sit. if i move my head forward a foot or so, it sounds great. what do i do to fix this? set the mic back a little and re-run audyssey? thanks
I'm so happy you're back doing these videos ! Quick question , what would you recommend setting the crossover for front and rear height Klipsch 500-sa ? Thank you for your videos once again and the time you take to do this for us !
Been waiting on this video! Here's a question though. Using Dynamic EQ, it was shown that audyssey boosts the rear speakers way higher than they should be depending on how much lower the volume was from reference. So at say -40 the surrounds would be at like -35 volume wise. They used a sound test disc to check all speakers at certain volumes to see what audyssey was doing. Ever try this to see how much it changes the volumes at different levels ?
The rears need to be slightly boosted as I explain in my video due to the way we hear. Rears being the same spl as everything else will sound quieter. As for dynamic Eq they actually have a ton of science backing what it's doing. Google Fletcher Munsen curve. You can also adjust the offset and aggressiveness of dynamic eq. Don't take any one persons advice to heart. Many don't realize why what is being done is being done. Also realize when using pink noise it measures every octave so there's a lot more lower frequencies being measured so you don't really see exactly what is being done across the entire range unless you measure the response. So anyone analyzing dynamic eq with a simple SPL meter I'd ignore the info as it's just not enough information to understand what is happening. Give it a try and do what you think sounds best.
@@hometheatergurus your videos have help me personally in regards to setting up my system, and thats why I thought I'd ask ya. I did seem to have the "issue" of rears becoming louder than my mains and when I found someone talk about it, it gave me the idea to turn off DEQ and trust in myself and tuning my system without it. I appreciate the work in your videos as its allowed me to tune my system and actually understand what I was doing. Thanks alot man, keep doing what you're doing. It helps !
Thank you so much for this video. I have an open corner of our basement and used your advice in EP 7&8 to lock in my 2 subs. Would you run audyssey after REW has done it's thing? Won't multieq mess w/my curve?
I have issue with my rear speakers. There’s no room to put speaker behind the listening position, only possible way is to the side just behind the listening position. Now my speakers are mono and not bipole should a bipole be better
It was a screw up on my end on that section. The only editing I could do was drown it out with music and I placed some pop ups in the top right for you to click on for the correction.
@@hometheatergurus Ok, those the TH-cam Grinch got you 😏. Thanks I used that video to finally get my SVS PB2000 intergraded into my system.. thank you. Ps. I finally dug as far as my SR7005 would let me and got my crossovers In the right peramiters...
I am one of those you mention that have to boost my Klipsch RP-440C center speaker. I had to boost it by +3.5dB to get natural vocals, as well as some "toe-up" to aim the center at head possiton. What are the most common issues that makes the center perform so poorly? I just did extreme toe-in on my L/R-speakers Klipsch RP-250F and got extremely good results compared to normal toe-in, the sound stage opened up super wide, and the transient response is hugely improved. By extreme toe in i mean to aim the left speaker at the rightmost listening position and vica versa, so they are angled past the center listening position in a 4-seater configuration. The room is open ended on one whole side, and with a L-shaped sofa against the back wall.. Not optimal.. Thank you so much for making these videos!!
Use a bookshelf version instead, or at least get a 3-way center channel with a nice midrange driver for superb vocal clarity. BTW you really should avoid sitting up against the back wall
@@droidzhunterz6861 Thank you very much for the answer. I have read that the RP-450C is 2.5-way at least, but im not sure what the RP-440C is. I am very space constrained between the stereo bench and the TV. So, if you suspect the speaker to be the main problem here i will look into that. There is sadly not options for seating. Do you have any recomendations for speakers that have the same height as the RP-440C or the RP-450C?
@@droidzhunterz6861 Ah, thats true. I also see that the SVS Center is too high to fit under my TV and the TV is wall-mounted so i cant move it. Seems i am locked into a bad center experience on this one. Thanks for the replies!
Awesome vid to help me understand the proper way to setup up everything. In the app for setting the filter frequency any recommendation of where to set it? Media/game room so not perfect for acoustics with Denon x2700H and Polk Signature s50, s30 and s15. Should I still go low as 400 or should I go to 500 or even 700?
Hi Steven! Thanks again for this video. I have a real issue here! I've watched pretty much all you videos and maybe I've missed something... I have 3 subs in the room. 2 Mains towers (Polk Audio RTiA9). When I run a REW measurement for only my mains, I have really deep nulls at 41 Hz and 76Hz. The 41Hz null doesn't bother me as the subs are taking care of it. But the 76Hz null (20db from 63 to 85Hz) is giving hard times! I've watch your Sub to Main integration video, I tried to boost the Crossover to 100Hz after time aligned (the best I can!) my subs with mains. Mains are 31 inches from back wall, so it's not SIBR (108Hz). I also taken care seat position with Harman room mode (Size is : L17'6"; W13'1"; H7'5"). My curve is PERFECT (thanks to you!) between 28Hz to 110Hz for my subs with MiniDSP 2x4HD. My problem is really when I run Audyssey and mixe my mains and subs together, it seems my mains are damaging sound below crossover point. I also have room treatment in the front corners and at first reflections. (4" bass traps (at approx 5 feet and diffusors at approx 8 feet). PLEASE HELP!!! I don't what else to do? Did I miss something in one of your videos?
The mains will effect the subs even below the crossover as it's a slope. Try raising the crossover higher and then adjusting sub distance to get it aligned as best you can.. If you have to cross over 100hz to fix it then you may have to do that. If the subs are up front localization shouldn't be as big an issue.
If you are using a Audyssey there are so many settings you have to change from factory. They think a mid roll down should be good, turn off mid compensation. Also they turn on loudness and compression default (no joke). I don't understand that at all. I have a whole review of the Denon receiver it sounds like junk out of the box with their defaults. I found dynamic eq can distort things at low volume. I don't know why or what it's doing, but I hated it even if it ads to the sound stage. Completely agree with you on limiting the eq and most of what you say. It can make your stuff sound like junk for sure. Lately I have been just turning it all off.
Hello mate one more time hope you good i have one question i have a space in my house that is 5 metres length * 3.30 width * 2 metres height I could create a home theatre there with dolby atmos??? or because the ceiling is too low the specifications do not allow it ??? Thank you again!!
Amazing! I followed your recommendations in this video and the system sounds awesome! One thing I noticed is that it set my subs to -12 but I brought that to -3.5 db and it sounds great. The only issue is my center sounds super dead, Audessey set it to -8.0. What recommendations do you have for the center?
I noticed in the app you didn't tell it not to EQ the subs. Assuming you tuned the subs in REW for the best response, you'd drag the sub section in EQ all the way to the right so it doesn't touch them, correct?
Outstanding video, been waiting for a great tutorial. Question, on the app can you limit the lower frequency as well as the high? Say i’m using a mini dsp to do sub eq can i have the audyssey app just adjust frequency say 100-400? Thank you
Thanks! We use bass management crossover to take care of the lower end. The editor limit will limit the upper end as we need eq in the entire modal region.
Yep. I've had the same results over and over.

Yeah I'm ready to get working on it and get it done!
You're welcome! Unfortunately there's a lot of bad information out there.
@@hometheatergurus Indeed, part of it because people do not know... and they would socialize their interpretation. Your advice has been the best and I am personally following it to the letter.

@@budgetaudiophile6048 ahh yeah to do it manually yes that's absolutely right!
MultEQ XT performs this kind of correction when it is needed to allow the loudspeaker to achieve the performance it was designed to have."
So what to do?
On my x1600h the app did a great job. I rised only the level of the sub to 0 because was on -5.5 and was too low in volume

Great to see you back pushing out helpful content! Been waiting on the app covering a long time :)
Will there be a deeper dive with the app when your room is built? Would love to see it more in depth and in combination with rew and minidsp.
Looking forward to see the build coming together soon, all the best of luck and thanks for another great video!
Can you cover setting up the house curve of the subs in multi eq or do you do this with the mini dsp still
Yea subs are all handled by miniDSP.

That’s been my experience with Dynamic Volume as well. On a poorly mixed film it makes dialogue MUCH easier to hear.
LFE LPF can be lowered if you run your subs hot to get better integration. If not, leave it at 120Hz.
Great Video!! I have a question regarding Audyssey and sub calibration. I followed your REW video Ep 7 (Great video as well!) and wondered how you keep Audyssey from changing your calibrated Sub results? Or do you recommend doing the calibration and then running Audyssey and going with it? Thanks!!
In the Editor app you can go to MultEQ Filter Frequency Range and go to subwoofer then move the slider from right to left all the way.
Can you please do a video on 2nd row seat raisers? Cheers
Sure. That would be a good one as there's a lot more to it especially with how it effects the speaker than most think. Once the house is done I'll start knocking stuff like this out.

I did the measurements for 8 measurements. At 5cm distance each. The results is worse. Why is that ?
@@georgep2301 Most likely because where you are measuring, is a bad spot in your room.
It could also be that you are reading the frequency curve wrong. It requires a bit of knowledge to understand what is actually happening on the graph.

24:40 STOP! respect the need for midrange dip!
I have an Elac and 5.1.2 setup here with polk heights, all my speakers have very distinct dips right at 2khz, but my center it's closer to 1k, so , midrange comp left ON for all speakers except the center , which is set to off with a custom 1.3khz dip using the curve editor. I tried the mid comp off , and it 'was' bad, this is noticably better! 👍
And nothing to do with speakers 'sucking'!
No well designed speaker has a dip nor needs one. If it does that speaker has issues.
@@hometheatergurus bro your speaker literally has a dip a t 2.2khz almost twice as deep as the Audessey dip! it's found with most well designed speakers to reduce harsh phasing at the woofer - tweeter crossover point

what if we have some very good Towers with double woofer and big center that are even better or let me say more quality linear response from 40 - 100hz and a single Subwoofer that has a bad Null response arround 47-50hz maybe for a room mode maybe because it's a more budget sub .. isn't it better to let the Front work together with the Sub in LFE+Main and set to Large fronts ?
thx
Room modes exist due to walls not the cost of the sub. It could be a $300 sub or a $6000 sub and the same mode will exist. If you have a null the sub or seat should be moved to avoid it or fix it, dual subs should also be a minimum. See ep 10.
So when you have to take 9 measurements you just use 3 seating places 3 times each?
Use your main listening position and move it 1-2 feet around that position. Always at ear level
@@hometheatergurus awesome. Thanks.

Whoa ha... You just fixed one of my issues. I was “correcting” subs distances. I didn’t know that It’s not a distance but the alignment with main.

Great video again. Do you calibrate the amplifier using the Odyssey calibration on the amp prior to using the Odyssey app adjustment to 400 Hz?

What is your opinion
I’ve set my front and center to 60 instead of 80. So so much better, I can hear the sounds way better.
For those with older receivers that do not support the app, should we just not run audessy? If yes we will need to manually set levels, distance, frequency and time align our subs? Can we run audessy to get these settings then disable audessy and set them manually to match?
Once again a Nice Tutorial .Thank you very much for spreading the Knowledge 👍

Thanks Joe! See the 4 part series on room treatments.
You set Reference Level Offset to 15db -- is it because your Master Volume is at -15db or because you think RLO 15 is "enough" of a house curve? Perhaps RLO 15 is good for music and TV while RLO 0 for movies.
Yeah I had a brain fart. I made a comment in the description and I'll make a correction on it asap.

I know it would probably be a huge amount of recording time invested but it would be cool to see you going through all the steps from all your videos with your new theater room. While I don’t have a dedicated room or matching subs I do plan to go through your sub level matching and rew videos soon when my miniDSP comes in
Once the house is done and things slow down I'll be doing more frequent videos and well show a lot of the setup.
Hi again, do you set the addiset the 400
Unless the room is a large open area I'd set it for around 350.
@@hometheatergurus what would you set it to in a large open room?
The Audyssey app is good, but do you find that it boosts your bass? I thought I was doing something wrong, but no matter what I do, it always boosts my bass frequencies, up to 5db's in some places. It only happens when calibrating through the app, but never when calibrating through the AVR, so it's definitely something with the app.
I came across a video on here someone suggesting setting the filter frequency range of the subwoofer from 250hz to 20hz so audyssey doesn’t do anything with the bass since a lot of people say audyssey kills bass. Would that make sense to do?
No. That's pretty bad advice.

Hey Eric, This is covered in ep 7 but you align the subs and eq to a flat target in REW/MiniDSP then let audyssey have it.
@@hometheatergurus Sounds good. That's what I have already done. Just wanted to check that I didn't miss anything. cheers
So when running audyssey - volume on the sub should be at 50%. Ok. What about the other knob on the sub - the crossover. What should that be set to?
See ep 9 on sub setup. I not only cover these questions but explain why and what they do exactly.
You skipped over Target Sound Options. Do I leave it alone or changing it to Roll Off 2 help it any?
The guide says for 5000c.f. or larger, use Target 2. Otherwise, use Target 1.
I'm not doing any anything over the frequency limiter so just leave it alone. 👍
What dynamic eq reference level would you recommend for music? Or would you turn it off for music?
Why when you're talking about reference level offset music starts playing drowning you out as if you were being edited?
It was a screw up on my end on that section. The only editing I could do was drown it out with music and I placed some pop ups in the top right for you to click on for the correction.

Check out the video on calibration for reference. It sounds like your centers levels may not be properly adjusted.
@@hometheatergurusyeah I'll definitely check it out and then I'll run Audessey again and keep you posted on it.
I noticed in the app you didn't tell it not to EQ the subs. Assuming you tuned the subs in REW for the best response, you'd drag the sub section in EQ all the way to the right so it doesn't touch them, correct?
I explain how to measure to further smooth what we did in rew.
Outstanding video, been waiting for a great tutorial. Question, on the app can you limit the lower frequency as well as the high? Say i’m using a mini dsp to do sub eq can i have the audyssey app just adjust frequency say 100-400?
Thank you
You can only limit the upper range; that is up to a certain frequency. You can only move the curtain from right to left 😊
Thanks! We use bass management crossover to take care of the lower end. The editor limit will limit the upper end as we need eq in the entire modal region.
