    This is how I setup Audyssey MultEQ XT32 using the MultEQ App on my Denon X4500H. Step-by-step approach. Tips & Tricks.
    Step 1: Place your speakers optimally in your room and apply treatments.
    Step 2: Download the MultEQ App for iOS and Android for $19.99
    Step 3: Plug in the setup mic and the cardboard stand
    Step 4: Follow the instructions on that
    Step 5: Do all the measurements. Don’t cut it short.
    Step 6: Double check results for obvious errors.
    Step 7: Decide whether you want to use Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume.
    Step 8: Save original measurement.
    Step 9: Make a copy of the original file and make changes to copies.
    Step 10: Set treble roll-off.
    Step 11: Turn off Midrange Compensation
    Step 12: Set a custom house curve aka target curve.
    Step 13: Limit the filter frequency range to about 500hz-700hz.
    Step 14: Set all speakers to “small”.
    Step 15: Set crossovers to 80hz or higher to start.
    Step 16: Set Audyssey to Reference, not Flat.
    Step 17: Turn off all extra sound processing “enhancements.”
    Step 18: Listen to familiar music and set bass and treble tone controls to your liking.
    Step 19: Turn off ECO mode.
    Step 20: Set 4 Quick Select profiles on your remote.
    Bonus: Enjoy your system!

      Just a little addition:
      If you do activate DynEQ then make sure to adjust the levels on your Surrounds, Rears and Top Rears by about -2 to -3db each since DynEQ boosts them too much, at least if your main listening Volume is somewhere between -15 and -25db

    Lol, my wife says that bonus tip is on point!
    Every single time we sit down for a movie she says, "One day. One day maybe we'll be able to sit and watch a movie without you ever having to adjust a setting or have you 'fix' something."
    Haha, she's so right. Even when I'm happy with how smooth things run, there's always SOMETHING I tweak in the first 5 minutes of watching. Whether it's the picture mode on the TV or the audio codec not being pushed to the receiver for some reason. Or maybe the LFE is too much or the dialogue isn't crystal clear. Lol, it's always something.
    Great video though! I've been waiting a year for someone to make a tutorial video on how to use the Audyssey app. Thank you for breaking everything down but in terms that we understand. Have a good one!!

    Dude, after 4 years this video still kicks ass! I used all of these settings 2 years ago and haven't changed anything, really. There are only 2 things I found with the app that I improved.
    1. Set your speaker volume levels by your own ear. Just take a picture of the screen with your phone before you start. I found movie tracks way too front heavy, don’t br afraid to increase your rears and rear heights 3 to 6db. Also, add a db or 2 to your subs. If your room setting has speakers close to you, turn them way down or if super far away, dont be afraid to increase volume. The mix that results covers your entire room equally, and you're lost in the sound field, which is what you want.
    2. I measured the speakers myself with a tape measure and found I got more accurate sound. Auddessey was close.
    I have 2 Martin Logan subs, so I calibrated with their app as well. My Denon 4700 has a 2nd speaker preset I use for music, Auro 3D does an excellent job with music.
    Would have been lost using the app without this video. Thank you!

    Hi Joe, today I have run a new Audyseey set for my Denon AVR 1611 pointing out the mic towards the speakers instead of towards the sealing. The result was totally different form the beginning. I have been using this AVR since 2013 and never gets totally satisfied with the results. Bass always was to boomy and now with this small change in the process the bass are more tight and precise. I have always thought about doing this way and as you mentioned this in your video it was bouncing on my head for a while until I tried it out. Thank you for your videos!!

    Good video. A couple of notes: if using the MultEQ editor app, always set your AVR to "REFERENCE". "Flat" will ignore all the changes you made in the editor. Also, setting a speaker to "Large" will NOT use your subwoofer for music. The crossover is disabled.

    Great vid -- I've done the Audyssey calibration and it set my speakers all in the range of -6.0 or lower. I find myself having to crank the master volume on the amplifier much higher now to get the punch and presence I want. I just got a decibel meter, and plan on using it to make sure all my speaker volumes are equal (same db level using the meter). Here is my question: what would happen if I boosted all the speaker levels up to say -2.0 or even 0? Will it allow my speakers and amp to work harder and produce more sound, or will it also screw up my Audyssey-imposed room corrections and tweaks I've made using the MultEQ Editor app?

    This was great Joe.Im trying to transfer these ideas over to my Yamaha 2080 receiver.In Yamaha they have YPAO volume,Adaptive DSP and Adaptive DRC that some reviewers insist should be on for movie watching. Im wondering if these are the same kinds of settings that you recommended be turned off.This only pertains to movie or tv watching since like yourself, I listen to music only in Pure direct.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know how these tips translate over. Adaptive DRC sounds like Audyssey Dynamic EQ and YPAO Volume sounds like their version of Dynamic Volume. It's tough to say because their solutions might work better or worse than Audyssey. I can't speak on that. Adaptive DSP sounds like it varies the total amount of DSP based on volume. Kind of interesting.

    Thanks. Just a note FYI: the Midrange Compensation has its origins in what is called The BBC Dip. I think it aims to push the soundstage back a bit, for example if your home setup is creating a ‘too-close’ soundstage, or sub-perfect recordings are too aggressive, or if you like classical music and the sound of the orchestra in your room is too close and not natural. Cheers

    Great video! I've been messing with the MultEQ app a lot lately also with the Denon 4500 and my KEF R series (R3 and R2c). A couple of questions... If you're only EQing up to 500hz-700hz; does the High Frequency Roll Off option on the App even matter? I'm thinking that if you're not EQing past 500hz, then it shouldn't matter whether you select Option 1 or Option 2. I could be wrong though. In addition, do you have your Audyssey set to 'Reference' within the Denon for all of your inputs (music and movies?). I used to have it set to Reference for my movie input, and Flat for my music input, but you mentioned that Flat overrides what limit you set the EQ for in the app (500hz)? Is that right? So I'm guessing that I should just set it to Reference for all of my inputs (music and movies?) Thanks for your help!

    • @joentell
      @joentell  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to have it set like you said with Reference for movies and Flat for music, but after doing some measurements and seeing that flat just bypasses the limited filtering I set to 700hz, I just use reference for everything now. I figure it it's good for music, it should be good for movies too.
      You're right about what you think should happen with regards to roll off option 1 & 2, but if I'm remembering correctly, it still has an effect on the top end extension. You would expect that if you set a limit, that would mean don't allow any DSP correction at all past that point, but I think it only applies to not allowing the custom curve to affect anything past that point.
      I will have to test it later, but I think even leaving midrange compensation on will affect 2khz with the limit set. It might be a problem with their program logic, but maybe something I can talk to their engineers about.

    "Joe N Tell" 2 questions the limit filter response to 500hz-700hz. Is it the same setting for all speakers or should there be a different setting for each speaker?

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its the same for all speakers... the filter limit is you telling Audyessy only make corrections within this range and 500-700hz is basically the bass region/most problematic area and is what you want to be eq'd and "room corrected".
      Odds are your speakers are pretty good sounding without any room correction eq and were engineered to sound there best the way they are and since Audyessy isnt using a super high end and accurate mic and is measuring a ton of reflective sound, along with your speakers direct sound, it has a vary tough time of deciphering your speakers natural frequency response curve and without that information accurately being sourced, any eq adjustments Audyessy makes are gonna be essentially random/done so on false data.
      Most issues are gonna be in the 500hz region so let Audyessy do its best in that specific region where it can be most useful... doing the full band unfiltered Audyessy eq is likely to lead to more problems then it solves.
      The vid Joe mentioned from Audioholics goes through the flaws of room correction software indepth. its a long listen (i believe 2 parts if I recall) but its well worth the watch as it will help you understand the benefits and flaws of eq software... its not the magic fix all that some imagine it to be... especially if your not limiting the filter.

    Thanks for the great video! I have the Denon AVR-X4700H and ran Audyssey using the remote. What was odd was that Audyssey set the crossover frequencies incorrectly (I think). For example, the mains (Polk L600) were set at 240Hz while the surrounds (Polk L100) were set at 40Hz. This seems backwards. Using the phone app can you manually set the crossovers first and then run the calibration program? In other words, will it complete the process without changing the manually set bass crossover frequencies? Thanks again!

    Hi Joe! Great video!! Have you found great loudness difference between turning on MultEQ and/or Dynamic volume against using manual Eq or pure direct? In my case I do have a Denon AVR1611, a 5.1 entry level unit from 2010, and the difference is such big that doing manual Eq or pure direct does not make sense at all. I have bought the unit second hand, so maybe there is something wrong with it. I would really appreciate your comments..also from other followers of this channel in order to find out more people with the same issue. Thanks

    • @TysonHook-22-
      @TysonHook-22- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pure direct is a 2ch stereo direct mode that cuts off the sub(s) and all other unused channels and various things within the receiver to give the purest most direct and uninterfered source playback... its essentially an audiophile music mode tends to be vary flat and dull imo
      MultiEQ: Reference or Flat should be on if you have done Audyessy setup and want its EQ corrections to be applied, many tend to prefer flat over reference but experiment and see what you like best for yourself.
      Dynamic EQ - tends to do more harm then good, most recommend to leave it off, it ruins the natural mix that the engineers created and applies EQ where it sees fit to give you a "cinematic home experience"... most find it negatively effects the bass and blows a bunch of the sounds out of proportion and as such is generally considered to be unpleasant... but if you like it, use it!
      Dynamic Volume: is extremely useful and many people run it on "light" for movie/tv playback it will make dialogue much cleaner and clearer to understand, it essentially raises the dialogue up to the front of the mix. for music playback you'll want this off though.
      Theres videos that discuss these things in further depth and online forums can be vary helpful with deciphering the various Audyessy settings... for ex. googling "Audyessy Dynamic EQ on or off forum" you'll get a ton of results of people discussing there experiences with Dynamic EQ and why they either love or hate it.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The transition frequency is determined by the room size, the directivity of your speakers, and your listening position. You just have to experiment. I have ways to determine what the range is in your room, but that's beyond the scope of this video.

    I've heard that you should never touch the gain knob on the subs itself after room corrections. Since I rather not use Dynamic EQ, I need to significantly boost up the sub trim in the avr. But I also heard you shouldn't go in the +. But even at 0db, I still think it could use more bass. I know the best way is to find another place for the sub or add a sec cod sub, but both aren't achievable atm.

      Corner loading subs will give you more headroom. The best way would be to increase the bass in the editor app using a custom curve. Apply the curve to all of your speakers to keep the same tonality.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ummm....not necessarily. The impedance of a speaker fluctuates depending on frequency so that would be tough. More important is sensitivity. They do that for the most part by doing making sure all of the speakers play at the same volume at your listening position. All of these modern AVR's can handle 6 ohms with no issue.

    I would remove / limit any front speaker down to 50-80Hz (the THX reference is 80Hz). Why? Sound below 80Hz needs a lot of punch and energy, and pushes any amp/speaker to it limits. Without these frequencies you have all power left for the rest of the spectrum. It will result in a far bigger dynamic range, since you go easier on speaker AND amp. Subs usually can handle - sub - frequnecies better since they "just" need to amp low frequencies. Just my 2 cent.

    Useful video, thanks.
    I found, on my X1400H, that restorer on low gives the best with 128kbps sound streams (MP3 or internet radios). Higher setting might be useful for lower bitrates, but I won't listen to those, and I found with higher settings it makes the bass unnatural and the treble harsh.
    For the ECO mode Denon and Marantz recommends auto setting. That will give the best from both worlds. Unfortunately on the X4500H (if I remember right) ppl experienced distorsion in the midrange with ECO on. When just set to on, I felt the sound of the X1400H strange, but with auto it sounds as good as it gets.
    The ECO trigger is around volume 45, which isn't that loud on speakers with average senitivity. So if you reach that volume setting with ECO auto, the AVR turns it off and you can use the full power of the amps.
    With auto it's only the matter of how well you tolerate the clicks of the solenoid turning on and off the ECO mode. :)

All speakers small with 80-100hz crossovers. I play with Dynamic EQ on and off but on does make system sound more processed. I would imagine without the app I am very limited. That's odd. I remember it doing it on my old Denon S720W if I'm not mistaken. Everything is updated?

      @@joentell Yup. Just checked and no firmware updates were available.

      I was probably mistaken then. Thanks for checking!

    So if you don't set a target curve in the app, just set Audyssey to flat in the receiver?

      It's tricky because I've found that the app applies all custom eq to the Reference curve only. If you want to remove the midrange compensation, you need to use the app. I am also not sure if the flat target means flat in the listening position because that won't sound great. If it means the speaker target response nearfield is flat, that might be ok. Typically, you want a downward sloping in-room response, meaning if you had some perfectly flat speakers, and you played them in a room, the response in a typical room would be downard sloping. Sorry if I'm not explaining it clearly. My next video should clarify a bit more.

      @@joentell Here is what I found on AVSForum from an Audyssey rep.
      If I adjust the MultEQ Filter Frequency Range below the MRC frequencies will MRC still be applied?
      Everything done in the curve editor and filter frequency range only applies to the reference target curve. Flat is not affected.
      Flat is always flat, with exception that if you enable MRC, it will have MRC.
      When using the MultEQ app is MRC on when I select the Flat or Reference curve?
      Turning MRC ON/OFF affects BOTH Flat and Reference.
      If I customize the EQ curve will it affect both Flat and Reference?
      No. It will only alter the Reference Curve.

      Exactly what I found as well! Thank you for making it clear and putting it in clear terms.
