Best fishing channel on the internet. Not a lot of loud talking, no awful music, no advertising of gear by the fishermen, just a humble, skilled fisherman taking us along.
I had a friend who on his first visit to Minn with his new wife was at a lake and saw a reed bank. Being a bass fisherman from hillbilly land had never seen a pike. A spinnerbait soon hooked about an 5 lb pike. In bass fisherman style he lip landed it. He no longer had the pike, it had him. In a panic he slung it onto shore resulting in the need for extensive bandaging. His new relatives now had a lifetime story about how Bill caught his first pike.
That’s a mistake you only ever make once lol. I’ve never tried to lip a pike (no duh lmao) but I’ve been bit badly once and you’d best believe I’ve never let that happen again. My thumb looks like ground beef after that fish was done with it.
@svengalt9546 Indeed, white catfish and bullhead catfish are usually the only catfish you can grab like a bass. The other species of catfish you need lip grabbers. Lip grabbers aren't good to use on a pike.
I see you blasted through 450K subscribers, big congratulations. It won’t be long until half a million is in the rear view window and you are on your way to a million. Thank you again you taking us along on another great fishing adventure.
It’s crazy, too. I remember when he had less than 90k. I feel like he blew up a fair amount after that top water duck video where he gets that monster pike literally 5 feet away from the boat. Matt certainly deserves it. He’s an amazing angler, and his vids are high quality and educational,
Fun outing! Thanks, NDYak! Friend who is pro scuba diver says every time the dive lakes w pike/musky, they see the biggest fish burried in the outside of offshore weed lines with just their heads poking out ready for ambush.
Doing some vicarious fishing at 2125 to take my mind off some heavy stuff. I had to put my dog down today. Thanks for the adventure and calm out there Matt. Glad to see you with the pedals again.
@@ndyakangler I still question sometimes if I made the right call or if there was something else I could have done. Maybe our fur babies are running and playing together now. Sorry man.
Keep a roll of cohesive bandage with you for the pike cuts, this cuts can bleed for hours, the cohesive bandage just sticks to itself and stops you from making a mess on your kayak, rods, clothes. Keep it going. Love your videos, so relaxing to watch 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Great time going along with the Yak Angler for some pike. Beautiful peaceful day with the random tractor trailer buzzing the audio interrupted by hook sets and splashing. Nice
My next vacation will definitely be a fishing trip to ND or MN...I've been watching Matt for years always super jealous of all his trips and quality fish he catches. Keep the vids coming!
Sometimes I kayak troll a small Rapala Husky Jerk off my rod holders. 2 at a time. Then paddle just outside the weed line. It’s getting harder late summer with more snags and weeds, but it sure is fun when that rod slams over with a bang.
I've never done squat with a chatter bait... glad to see someone making it work! On the spinner bait/pike relationship, I can't get over how often white with a red trailer or red with a white trailer just slays the pike bite!
Great show, not obnoxious host. Love the chatter bait. I used it a lot when I yakked back home in KY. Living in the desert SW and missing my fishing days
I love catching pike on top water baits! The take is usually spectacular. My go to is a Terminator tungsten spinnerbait, high speed retrieve just below the surface. I also like the old reliable Rapala skitter pop on flat calm water. But I just bought a perch pattern whopper plopper, can't wait to try it!
Yup...the mid summer pike bite is always tough. Thats when you get to the lake 2 hrs before sun up , fish till 11 a.m. - noonish. Or just night fish. Get out a couple hours before sundown and go home around sun up. Night fishing mid summer is when the hogs feed. No boats running around , hot sun is gone....good times. Big fish.
Your videos are awesome! Chatterbaits are great for pike. I've had a lot of luck with the 3/4 oz z-man fire craw, this season, but I think I'll have to give the white 1/2 oz a try too. Thanks again for posting great content!
After his other videos being so successful I went and bought 2 different sized ploppers that matched the fish in my lake. Caught 2 massive bass with em 😂
@@stinthedude Hard to believe, but I've always been a spinner and spoon fisherman. I was never really into plugs, so I neglected topwater for decades. I had no idea what I was missing. You absolutely have to have a dependable bait caster that you master and not birds-nest it. I got one of the Quantum reels Matt uses, and now I can bomb lures out 30-40 yrds. Really helps to sneak up on fish and cover a lot of water, while presenting the lure a long time over structure. I get so many reaction strikes on the Whopper Plopper and follow-up strike, you wouldn't believe it. Matt does that little "pause and jiggle" with the lure when he gets a near miss, and I've copied that to great effect.
I think someone forgot to sharpen their hooks. I have never seen you miss so many. A how in the world does a little pond like that have fish survive? Still fun to watch. Thanks Matt
for pike i use a minnow lure that you can find a dunhams its very small but it caught me a 3 or 4 footer. was in the middle of the lake when i caught it. it was halfway on the boat and it was a solid 2 feet bit suprisingly it snapped my 36 pound line/steel leader.
As always, another fantastic trip! The water I fish has stocked tiger musky to knock down the high perch population. It also has a very healthy large mouth bass population, which is my normal target. After hooking up with some tigers here and there on bass gear, I decided to add a musky rod. I've noticed in a couple of your pike videos, the white chatter bait seems to do very well. You have had success with both pike and musky, so would you recommend white as a decent "go to" color since tigers are a mix of both? The reservoir I fish is very heavily weeded, and the tigers have plenty of cover, so this video was especially helpful me. Thanks again for what you do. Your videos provide great content and learning.
Love your videos. Just notice the pike had its scissor inside its mouth at 9minute 20 secs, its better for the pike to put in back out. Keep on casting 😉
Thanks for the fishing trip. Btw, do you mean that this was the first time you'd been at this location in a while, or this year-b/c it looks [and sounds lol] really familiar?
Man I just love pike, such a mean, goofy fish. Maybe try some inline spinners next time? I had great time and lots of success throwing them over the last decade and a half of me fishing. Yeah they are a little finicky to work with because you have to use lighter gear or they won't run well but usually size 5+ is great even on heavy gear for most brands.
First time I caught a pike on a Whopper Plopper, that 2:54 was exactly how it hit it. Startled the heebity jeebies out of me. It was right then that I also realized I absolutely love topwater river fisihing as my favorite kind fishing. Now I'm in a new state far from the Midwest and any Smallies and I have to relearn all new and different techniques. I am seriously thinking of starting a new channel and documenting my transition to the south and salt water fishing.
I was fishing a rocky point throwing around a white spinnerbait kind of similar to this. I had a small one give me a pretty good scare as he smoked it a foot away from shore.
Yes, very tasty, although filleting them can be problematic. They excrete a sort of slime (mucous), which has to be removed or it'll taste off, and lots of little pin bones.
Some of those are a little thin real healthy. Last year here in Wis I was seeing some fish that didn't look right, beat up, thin. I'm hoping nothing serious going on. Nothing wrong with your fish, just fantastic.
Funny, have never caught pike on a chatter bait in Ireland, but I suppose that’s it’s a self fulfilling prophecy. Have to persevere with them, fished slow.

Can't lip a bowfin(dogfish) either, they have at least as many teeth as a pike and the bite force of a catfish.
We all know it's best to handle pike under the chin area. Pikes teeth sharp as hell. 😮

Love your content. Can’t wait for your next Musky adventure. Pike and Musky are amazing that you share. 😊💥🎣

That lake is so cool. I love how calm it is. If they’re hitting top water, that is so sweet. 🤘🏻👍
Nice productive day for the Pike. No monsters but descent size plus the fun of catching.
Thanks, Matt, I really enjoyed watching you catch those pike, thought they weren't huge, the action was still really nice! Take care and be safe!
