Dude youtube just flagged my account for a guideline strike on THIS video because of a comment I made just talking about PGXP being Built into Duckstation. WTF
Konami gets a 3rd party to make games for them. They don't develop games or even these remasters themselves anymore. They're just a publisher/IP broker handing out their IPs to studios that want to make something, like way forward with the contra remake or the studio that made the Castlevania Reqeium, Legacy and Advance collections. Heck, they would probably just hand over the Castlevania IP to IGA at this point to make the fabled 1999 game that he's wanted to make since the GBA.
If that's the case, then maybe they could have found a way to release it for the Switch and have an extra incentive for people to go for the Switch version of the collection.. but regardless, I personally don't plan on getting this collection.
@@eric1911a1I don’t know the legality, but just to play devil’s advocate, maybe it isn’t as easy as that? I’m sure FromSoftware would like to do *_anything_* with Bloodborne (remaster, sequel, etc) but it’s apparent Sony is preventing that. Maybe that isn’t the best analogy (idk) but I’m trying lol
@@eric1911a1But why keep it exclusive? I don't want another Goldeneye situation. Not that the twin snakes is a perfect remaster, but it's still worth archived and playable on any machine, because that's how you really want to archive your art.
Honestly I think it could happen maybe in Vol 2, Rewident Evil 4, Resident Evil 1 Remake and Resident Evil Zero were all Nintendo exclusive now they're on everything.
@@eric1911a1 afaik, the only bonus content you can inlcude on platform-specific games is cosmetic. Mostly due to laws in UK which really fight for consumer protection. meaning, it's unfair to get an entire exlcusive free game just bc its on your platform, the others wouldnt get such a thing,
I would say COD players, Destiny players, and what else 🤔 next year's Skyrim players paying $70 for the Xbox 5/Switch2 version lol mainly the first series I mentioned
When the emulation community does a better job than the videogame company you used to look up to. Seriously, how embarrassing for Konami to do a shoddy, minimal job and expect their fans to shell full price for not even a barebones port. I totally agree that this kind of behavior must not be rewarded.
This isn't "minimal work," tons of effort went into these collections like with the megaman legacy collection. The MGS collection is NOT a ROM dump, it's a legit remaster containing over half a dozen games. Plus Konami didn't make this, they're just the publisher. Konami doesn't make games anymore, they just hand out the IP to developers interested to make games or remasters for them. And the collection isn't full price, it's $50 in America and 5000 Yen in Japan. (100 Yen = 1 USD)
It's been like that across the board for a while now. Why put in the effort when you can copy/paste an old game with a few cosmetic buffs and nostalgic fan boys will buy it anyway?
Not just not rewarded.. Punished! Only torrent their releases from now on until they barely exist anymore. EA, Bethesda, CD Red.. They are all already deserving of this treatment.
The only reason why I want to see the MGS collection V1 succeed is because I want to see V2 release, and hopefully bring MGS4 to PC, along with PSP titles, and maybe even Ghost Babel without having to worry about slipshod emulation issues or other such.
yea, that's kind of the thing tbh. if people just don't buy v1, then why would konami even make a v2 if they take that as people not being interested in old games being ported over to modern hardware? honestly in this case, i would want v1 to succeed since that would mean the people who refuse to emulate for whatever reason would be able to play the old mgs games, which could eventually lead to them being able to play mgs4 if v1's sales do well enough. and if mgs4 gets ported over to current gen platforms, then that means that the game will have a lot more accessibility on what platform you want to play the game, which will be good for everyone at the end of the day

I can’t WAIT to see your MGS2 video. MGS2 is the ONE game in the ENTIRE series I have a pretty divisive relationship with. I remember being SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED with it when I first played it because the story went completely over my 13-year-old head but NOW, it’s INCREDIBLE TO ME how on-point it was about the digital proliferation of information. Despite that initial disappointment, it was still one of the most incredible games I ever played and it’s still the sole MGS entry I’ve REPLAYED MORE than any other one.
@@firstworldproblems6064 Well, considering that I was 14 years old and there was NO MAINSTREAM CONCEPT of social media then, I felt like I UNDERSTOOD the concepts MGS2 was trying to push on a basic level but had ZERO CONTEXT for why those things could have TERRIFYING IMPLICATIONS.
I played MGS2 back when I was fucking 7 or 8 years old and despite not understanding a *single thing* going on it was my favorite game alongside Kingdom Hearts 2 for the longest time. I loved it
Correction, they made Snakes Revenge COMPLETELY without telling Kojima and one day while in the train home a dev working on a completely different project asked him why he wasn't working on the Metal Gear sequel. He said, "Dafuq (roughly)", went home and write the story for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake the same night, presented it the next morning and was greenlit by end of day.

1. The collection is only $60, not $80 like he kept saying. 2. He assumes you have a gaming PC, that your PC is strong enough to flawlessly handle PS3 emulation, that you can source/rip all the games, and that you WANT to fumble around with menus in 3 or 4 separate emulators to get the games to run properly. 3. 4K wasn't mainstream until after the final game of the series dropped in 2015, so why does it matter that the games' resolutions are at 1080p? The newest game featured here was originally released in 2004, THREE console generations ago. 4. These games are ancient and the point of the collection is to preserve the games and have them available on (more) modern hardware. If you want 4K, 120fps Metal Gear, get the remake when it drops.
I believe he’s talking about Canadian dollars not USD but this bugged me out too every time I heard it knowing it wasn’t $80 😂 this dude wouldn’t be happy if Konami made the entire collection free
Lazy ports of 20 year old games shouldn't cost the same as a modern AAA game, that's the main point here. Look at the GTA DE trilogy for comparison, if they ain't worth the price even when they tried to update them then this master collection most certainly isn't.
@@talibong9518 ah sure, because having three AAA games that set the standart for the cinematic storytelling you see in most big budget games right now, that are iconic to the T is not justified, we the gamer race gotta have the best in the west! please for the love of god, try to once understand that a remaster isn't only about blowing your ballsack off with 1000fps and 140k resolution but is about preserving a piece of culture (cuz at this point mgs is that) for the next generation.
@@talibong9518Well this collection is less lazy than the Legacy collection if that’s a consolation, also $60 USD is plenty fair now considering accounting for inflation, at launch MGS2 cost around $105, MGS3 cost $98 and the Legacy collection cost $66 all adjusted to today’s money. So for 3 first string games that’s a pretty fair price. In no way is that greedy or unreasonable. Other publishers/developers may release their back catalog at further discounts and overall better deals for the consumer but they are not obligated to do that. The master collection is still a good deal if a good deal is defined as a price being well below original market value.

@@juusoe.4869 There’s multiple reviewers who got to play the game and lots of footage but one of the confirmed fixes if you remember from Sons of Liberty HD the codec would lag for a second or 2 before dialogue started every single time. They fixed that. Quote from Konami in an IGN interview: “We put the white gloves on and just whatever needed to be touched up or trimmed just to modernize them. We did that and then the rest we just left as it was, because that was the intent.”
Basically what I want out of this collection. My only concern is the PC port not having a startup menu for each game and rather having each just boot up separately, but maybe that's already been answered and I just haven't seen it.
I'm about a year into learning game dev, and realizing just how many workarounds there are to frame limiting functionality in games now, it just begs the question, why are companies re-releasing old games like this? It's simple, because they can't be bothered to remake it themselves, and won't release the license to studios that will.
some games are coded around framerates tbf. sonic adventure is locked at 30 because sonic's speed is tied to framerate. DX breaks so heavily because the doubled framerate causes speed issues which break collision detection.

Some people just don't like emulating Mutahar. Sure the collection isn't exactly definitive or premium but the truth is they're being officially preserved and that's better than having the games rot away on old consoles not accessible to modern audiences. Most people don't want to jump through 1000 hoops to emulate games from 20 years ago, which stops games as incredible as the Metal Gear Solid series from being passed on to new audiences for them to enjoy. The collection isn't the best way to play these games, but it's a method nonetheless, and I'm glad it exists.

People were perplexed that The Twin Snakes wasn't included in the PS3 collection over a decade ago. The Twin Snakes has never been remastered or re-released anywhere beyond the GameCube. There has to be some legal issue preventing it, maybe tied to the issues Silicone Nights had over the years.
Honestly as long as they fucking work I’ll give them a standing ovation. what used to be the bare minimum is now a herculean feat. Battlebit launching and just working blew my mind being a long time battlefield fan.
The fact that Battlebit, a.k.a. Roblox Battlefield, runs better and contains more features than current AAA games is as much a slap to the face as BG3 was.

A warning about playing MGS3 on RPCS3 emulator. While for the most part it did run fine for me, Ponizovje South and the final boss tanked my frame rate. the issue with emulating MGS2 and 3 is that the playstation versions of those games rely on the pressure sensitive playstation face buttons. It's why when you hold square with a rifle equipped it auto sprays bullets. You're supposed to just rest your thumb on the square button, and that lets you aim without firing, which isn't possible on xbox controllers or playstation controllers after the PS3.

Its easy to remember when MGS2 was released. They deleted scenes leading up to the last boss because 9/11 happened, and the scenes showed part of new york getting destroyed by arsenal, which they deemed disrespectful. One time I was at a hard rock casino in Florida, and many of the machines there had “Konami” brand labels on them. When I saw this, I recalled the story of how Konami fired Hideo Kojima because they favored releasing gambling cash grab games on mobile devices over expensive playable narratives like the metal gear solid series, or what silent hill was supposed to be until it was inevitably cancelled. I can’t help but wonder if Konami is owned by yakuza at this point, since the yakuza was founded on running gambling rackets hundreds of years ago and still do it to this day.
That is . . . not at all why they fired Kojima. That's what people _say_ about the situation, but the reality is that they didn't feel his output was worth his ego, especially considering the clown-shit show surrounding Phantom Pain.
@@nicholasfarrell5981 well it clearly was worth it, MGS is one of the biggest and best selling gaming franchises in history so obviously Konami are in the wrong and are crazy for letting go of one of the best minds ever to have graced gaming.
@craigsampson3386 no, they aren't. Kojima would blatantly copy whatever he could from Western media while demanding that the games he worked on not be localized in any way because it meant that someone else could get a sliver of credit for (among other things) dialogue that was terribly written, and was an egomaniacal tyrant whenever he wasn't chatting up famous people or in front of a camera, all while expecting sole credit for any project that he so much as thought about *and* routinely operating behind schedule and over budget. At the end of the day, no company can afford to humor any single employee that much, especially when they think that they are the only person who matters and/or risk rights holders/other employees bringing legal action against the company. It's just proper risk assessment.
@@nicholasfarrell5981 yes, they are. Konami is just a soulless company that just focuses on nothing but maximum profits now. Ever since they fired Kojima ALL their games that have released since then have been crap, hence why they're mainly focusing on pachinko gambling machines, minimum effort and max profit off of gamers nostalgia using MGS to lure them in. Meanwhile in about only 4 to 5 years Kojima managed to get back on his feet and start a new company, find a location for his company to start working at, find a new game engine to use (because Konami unfortunately own the rights to the FOX engine that KOJIMA made) and then make and release a brand new game in a new franchise, Death Stranding. All in about 5yrs. Atleast Sony were smart enough to back and partner with Kojima. Death Stranding may be a divisive game although its generally positively received and has a high level of polish. Also a financial success hence why they're making a sequel.
@nicholasfarrell5981 One day, I hope some of these blinded fans will stop putting Kojima on a pedestal and his ego will stop being cute to them. It can be frustrating that no one thinks of the other writers/creators of their favorite games who might have been even more important or keeping him in check. It's nice to see someone grounded rather than thinking in black and white that Konami is the only problem here and Kojima is an innocent little cherub.
The PS2 controller had pressure sensitive buttons, which where incorporated into the gameplay in MGS2/3 (ie you could point your gun at someone and then lower it again by applying the right amount of pressure to ◾), none of the HD releases since have had this and it drives me crazy!
No, they do have it. But it's mapped to other buttons and much more of a cluster f*ck than it used to be. If you're aiming at an enemy and want to put your gun away, you will need to click L3, for example. One thing you really can't do now, though, is the pressure sensitive buttons that are mapped to your firearm trigger when holding a fully auto gun, such as an AK. That will fire relentlessly as soon as you press and hold square and there is no way to "aim" it without shooting like back in the day.
I think the reason why Twin Snakes wasn't included is because Konami likely didn't think purchasing the rights from Nintendo would be worth it considering how it's generally considered to be an overall worse version of the original by the fanbase. That said, good video. I was thinking of passing on this one and this only reaffirms my decision. Probably only gonna get Volume 2 if it actually has MGS4, because that's the only game in the MGS series I haven't managed to play. Addendum: A point in MGS2 Substance PC's favor: there's currently a mod called "The Substance of Subsistence" that adds in the free camera from MGS3 Subsistence to it, built completely from scratch, to give you yet another way to play MGS2.
It's because their product isn't games for consumers, it's profit for shareholders. The games were just a means of production, and scams have shown themselves to be more efficient.
While Muta brings up great points here the tragic thing is that unfortunately not everyone has a good enough or even a PC at all and will have to settle for Konami's collection or waste a lot of money buying multiple old consoles and games
I played MGS3 on PCSX2 on my GTX 1070 years ago, and I emulated other PS2 games like Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 years earlier on cards like R9 290 and even HD 5870 - I could play at 1080p 30/60 with post processing settings like AF and AA cranked up. I'm sure most people can play MGS1, 2 and 3, emulated on their hardware - heck their smartphone could probably do the job ( not saying it CAN be done, but I emulated PSP on my Galaxy S7 back then and it was great). Now PS3 emulation of MGS HD and MGS4 is a different story....
Most of what he said was completely misinformed. Mouse and keyboard support was added, they just haven't updated the steam page for it yet - but people did play with k&b at TGS 2 weeks ago. The 6 clips that konami could get the licenses too because the companies from 20 years ago shut down have been replaced with comparable clips, and MGS3 on the PS3 had broken rain effects and depth of field doesn't work at all. The only thing in this video that's valid is that the games don't run at 4k, otherwise the rest of this 24 minute long rant is all misinformation.
I would just say, "Duh and/or hello!" to Konami scamming you but it does feel like we need to keep drilling to that into people's heads, especially the younger generation.
I got stuck on the maze for months until the Nintendo Power issue with all the secrets dropped. How tf were we supposed to figure that isht out on our own? I was like 10 years old!
Since the physical copy doesn't even have the entire game on it, just a code in a box, everyone who wants to get this is better off waiting a couple months for when it's $10 digitally.
Yeah, I think that's because a lot of the footage hasn't been passed into the public domain just yet. It takes 95 years for something to get into the public domain, but WWII started 84 years ago. Just looking it up, theres a lot of places where you can still buy the rights to use WWII combat footage lol. Still baffles me though, because there's a lot of WWII footage that's been given to the public domain (along with various other wars).
@@QuotedUnquote I'm not a zoomer and I already know about copyright law, it's still fuckin weird tho, especially when considering how important to everyone something like WWII is
One thing you forgot to mention is that for these older MGS games, you need a dualshock 3 with pressure sensitive buttons to be able to use some of the mechanics such as aiming without firing, CQC/grappling, grenade throws just to name a few. Especially MGS2 and MGS3 as they rely heavily on the ps2/ps3 pressure sensitive buttons. AFAIK peace walker and MGS4, you can play with a dualsense and still have a great time because they didn't rely on them as much or at all. Would love to see your solution to this as I noticed you generally use a dualsense when emulating
For emulation, I remember messing with it on the Steam Deck before and having to look it up online and find a Reddit post on it (I forget the settings needed at this time), but there are actually settings to set buttons up for the "pressure sensitivity" options (to lower your gun in MGS2/3) as I remember that exact issue I thought of when I was thinking about putting the games on my Steam Deck. I just remember messing around with it (before resetting my Emudeck settings) where the Reddit post mentioned to set it to a certain percentage, and I could use one of the back buttons on the Steam Deck to activate it... actually makes it a bit easier than the pressure buttons cause I remember half the time not letting go slow enough and firing my gun anyways while holding up an enemy lol The main issue I would say is that considering most standard controllers these days have the same amount of buttons as back then (while only a few have the "behind the controller" buttons... this would be one of those good times to have those buttons...) that is what would make emulating the pressure sensitivity harder sadly :/
@brandoncruz3102 would there be a way to map these controls to rpcs3? AFAIK you can't map a light press of square to any other button without also binding a full press
Emulation is always going to be a viable, and usually better, way to play older games but I'm not going to knock having more ports of older games either. Both options can and should co-exist. If one way isn't for you, then you have another way to play.
As a rhythm game fan, I'd be getting scammed by Dance Dance Revolution GRAND PRIX's and Beatmania IIDX Infinitas's monthly subscription and seperate DLC costs if they weren't online-only games that are region-locked outside Japan and require Konami's proprietary arcade currency to pay for. Instead, I'm just getting scammed by Round 1 arcade costs.
Konami should just sell a DDR Complete Collection, arcade exact et al, from 1st Mix-present, both separate and in one giant mix too. Charge $300 for it. Do the same for Beatmania IIDX and the rest.
It blows my mind that anyone would willingly pay $60 for these. Original versions are so abundant that you can get all of them for about half the price of this collection.

I think the collection is a pretty nice package even on Switch, because the ports don't have stretched HUDS in widescreen (which irk me) They even rectified a couple GFX errors from bluepoint's original remasters. The extras are extensive, and well in the case of MGS1; The Twin Snakes has a divisive reaction from the community anyway and is not an outright replacement for the MGS1 experience, just because you can't see Snake's crusty 240p face texture in HD doesn't really mean it's a scam. Konami has been upfront with all the details across platforms and I like that they're doing this and bringing it to platforms we can't play it on.
Agreed. A lot of hate on this product which just feels like "Hey, Konami put something out. Time to hate on it for the clout". Are there things they could have done to improve it? Yeah, but then people would bitch that it isn't true to the original title. Could they have added a little polish to sharpen up the textures without a full HD overhaul? Yeah, but personally from my gameplay it runs fine and honestly had no side by sides been posted online I wouldn't even have noticed given the upgrade from CRTs back when MGS1 first came out. Konami is a shit company, I 100% stand by that, but that doesn't mean they can't put out a decent product and this feels decent. Also agreed about Twin Snakes. It had a pretty big negative backlash when it came out due to being so over the top when the install base expected something closer to the grit of the original MGS (not saying MGS didn't go over the top in later games). Add in the licensing issue with Nintendo, and with the silicon knights chaos who knows if there might even be other rights holders at stake. Once you get other companies involved, it becomes pretty chaotic pretty quick. If they were going to bring Twin Snakes out, I would rather them just take the MGSV engine and remake the first MGS (though I don't trust Konami to pull something THAT ambitious off).
THANK YOU!!! I’m so happy to see other people defending it. Konami doesn’t deserve defense but this collection does. I’m really excited to have the games on my switch along with the bonus content.
Well he himself is personally okay with remasters as Kojima was actually involved with the original HD collections and the quality for the time was high no matter the platform, but these new ones coming out are just plain bad cash grabs 😢
The remastered PS3 collection is still easy to find in America and I believe I got it for $20 online around 4-5 years ago, It includes almost every game short of Portable Ops (including the original 2 Metal Gears I believe) up to Guns of the Patriots. It's Konami though so not surprising at all they would do this.
The X360 version is a good pick too. And works on the current gen Xbox consoles. I was lucky enough i Bought it digitally back in the day, But later on bought it Physically as well. For both the PS3 and X360. I also have both the EU and NTSC version of MGS HD Collection on the PS3.
Also available on Vita with unique system controls which makes use of the touch screen and touch pad for various functions such as item/weapon selection, zooming in or out with the binoculars or peeking out of walls during corner view. If you own a PS3 copy aswell of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 they have a "Transfarring" feature (a Hideo Kojima coined term), which allows users to transfer their save file between both platforms via a Wi-Fi connection or through a cloud storage, allowing continuous play of the same save file on a different platform. The PS3 version of Peace Walker has a similar connectivity with the original PSP version of the game, allowing the transferring of save files through a USB connection.
My only issue with not buying the collection would be that Konami may go "oh, the collection isn't selling, guess we shouldn't release Volume 2 with Metal Gear Solid 4 then" as while you do make a good point that, yeah emulating can be the way to go, it's not like everyone has a 4000 or even 3000 series graphics card that can run the PS3 emulator easily (the emulator says it recommends a 660 at the very least, but obviously the bare minimum will return with the bare minimum playability, while Steam put out a 980 is the "recommended" hardware, so it *should* play well on even low end GPUs... if Konami isn't lying) But besides that, most casual people wanting to try/play the games won't go through the hoops of setting up an emulator, let alone have the copies to backup and play (as can't say to pirate the game, especially when a new version is "coming soon" and it feels like people say "just pirate it, the games aren't available anymore anyways" and then when a developer does come out with it, people advocate to pirate anyways) Could the games be at a cheaper price due to being 20'ish year old games now? Sure. But we are also coming from a time where games are being remade/ported and still being charged $60 at the end of the day. Not to mention, I don't see much modding occurring on games that are emulated unless they are Nintendo games. It'd be a bit neat if the collection got people to mod the games now since it will be more readily available. (more people know about Steam than GOG... sadly...) This is coming from someone that even owns Twin Snakes so it doesn't bother me as much personally, but I see why people would still get it. (... and while I like TS's control and camera scheme more, I hate that they literally took out the main alert theme from the game, replacing it with less exciting themes... there are more songs, but they just don't have the same feeling to them)
The RPCS3 emulator is more CPU dependent than GPU. This doesn't necessarily weaken your overall point though, as even people with powerful GPUs are going to struggle playing RPCS3 MGS games, as it still requires a powerful CPU.
@@centricthemedic1517 Yeah... glad you knew what I meant hahaha Cause yeah, it's like how tech people make it sound so easy to emulate games, but at the same time, said tech people invest in those good PCs. (I mean Muta has a 4090, that is a GPU that less than 1% of PC users probably have, and he probably has the top of the line CPU too as well as other high end things, considering his job too) It's not like everyone has a powerhouse PC to run the emulators themselves (running SNES emulator vs a PS3 emulator are pretty different in terms of power) Pretty much why I do get where he is coming from... but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of his audience doesn't even have the capability to run RPCS3, vs purchasing a $60 collection that *should* be more optimized to run on a PC. (but knowing Konami, they may not have even optimized it too since they couldn't even bother to make keyboard controls) I'd honestly just wait for a review to see how well it played on PC if I was a casual player (and if you need an above decent PC too haha...)
Minor correction worth adding about the MGS1 remake from gamecube: there are publishing issues with Nintendo, similar in vein to how some Soulsborne titles are controlled by Sony rather than Bandaiscamco. Basically in order to get the Twin Snakes remake ported or re-released, Nintendo would be involved and iirc they would also get lots of money out of that. I'm sure someone else is more aware of what the actual deal is
Also, the ps2 controller had pressure sensative face buttons which were actually implemented in a quite an important way in mgs 2 and 3, which essentially makes it impossible to play unless you've got a controller that can do that. Otherwise have fun not being able to aim your gun without HAVING to shoot
I thought this was going to be about Silent Hill, then I thought it was going to be about Yu-Gi-Oh’s recent product flops. Konami really does have a track record on shooting themselves in the foot
Twin Snakes is not only a legal nightmare but MGS fans actually hate how "Over the top" Twin Snakes is and prefer the PS1 release because of how *Grounded* it is. So as far as Konami sees, it's not worth trying to deal with that legal warzone for a game you're going to get sh*t for releasing when you're already getting shit for releasing exactly what people asked for.
@@diegomedina9637 They hate how 'over the top' twin snakes is but not how 'over the top' MGS4 is for example? Freaking Raiden twirling mechs on his feet? ladies and gentlemen, give this guy anything and he'll find a way to complain about it. ladies and gentlemen, it is a dark day in gaming history. thats it thanks ladies and gentlemen.
I don't really see how this is a scam. I mean, yeah, no keyboard/mouse support sucks. The price is pretty steep. I don't care about 4k but i guess the option for it would be nice. But other than that this seems like a bare minimum collection. Nothing offensive. Also as someone who emulates frequently, I can say that emulation can be a pain in the ass, so it isn't a catch all solution for everyone.
Kojima was on a train ride and a coworker from Konami told him about it. He was surprised that Konami (not just the American branch) greenlit a MGS2 without his knowledgement. When he played it he was disappointed (like any father would be) and went to make a apporitat sequel to MGS. This is when the cone view was added, new ways to sneak, a new inventory system, and the codex.
@@XVa-uj8m yeah I meant MG it's a bad habit of mine when talking about the series. Even though MG had issue on both the MSX2 and NES, it was very well meet with praise. But since Konami are greedy, they just went ahead to make a sequel calling it Snakes Revenge (which is not even cannon), to which they managed to make it worse than the first one. Giving it more issues than the first one already had.
Expecting the Twin Snakes version of MGS1? Dog, not only it's a terrible remake, but also Nintendo would never allow Konami to happen, because we all know how Nintendo handles their property
Hearing you having to explain the MGS releases and how Konami screwed us simultaneously feels like watching a video that explains the entire lore of MGS2 An excellent job all around 🤙🏽
5:08 While I do prefer The Twin Snakes myself. I think there are two possible reasons: 1. There are cameos of Mario & Yoshi in the game. Could be an issue if it was multiplatform. 2. Silicon Knights, the company Konami hired to develop THE TWIN SNAKES, went bankrupt about a decade ago.
Muta failed to point out that the PS2 and 3 versions of MGS3 have basically unplayable controls regarding CQC because of the pressure sensitive function with older controllers. If you want to emulate MGS3, the best way to do it is with Xenia Canary.
@@unsubtractI've tried doing it by setting up specific dead zones and changing the layout but i never got it working without it playing weird. I dont mind the lack of keyboard and mouse support. I was about to drop some money on a controller with pressure sensitive buttons anyway because I wanted to emulate mgs2 and 3 and setting up kbm for that is a pain. I do wish Twin Snakes was included especially for the price tag :(
Keyboard and mouse WAS added. Konami announced they were adding Keyboard & Mouse support after all in July and people confirmed they could play in on the PC version at Tokyo Game Show.
Great video, but when emulating MGS 2 and 3, one of the ways that wasn’t mentioned was through M1 Macs on AetherSX2. This emulator runs both games natively extremely well on base model M1 MacBook Air (1440p 60 FPS), and as someone who’s looking for stuff to do in-between college lectures, it’s awesome to pull out at any time. Mac isn’t really used for gaming all that much, but it’s worth noting as an extremely viable option for playing the series.
We hear constantly how people would not pirate games if they were "re-released to modern systems" and how important that is for "preservation". Seems like the goalpost has shifted to "re-release to modern systems with all the options and features I personally want". Is that what "preservation" actually is, then? I'm not a Konami fan nor am I pretending this HD collection is some sort of god-send, but what grinds my gears is the disingenuous discourse surrounding older games when the actual motivation is just trying to get free stuff in the end.
I have an effective technique called: "Pirate everything you can and don't actually buy anything" that prevents me from being scammed by these game developers, it have been working kinda well for the last 20 years.
For me if I am curious I’ll pirate and then if it is good I’ll buy it. But even then, I always wait at least a year before buying any tech to let bugs be exposed and hopefully fixed.
@@kelly4187 that's a good practice 👍🏻, you also get to play a better version of the game which is more polished than the day 1 release and only reward devs when you consider they deserve it.
Yeah. I already have MGS1 on Duckstation and the 2003 port of MGS2, so I'm just waiting patiently to pirate MGS3 from this collection and I'm good. No way I'm paying for this with the zero effort they put into it, I already paid for the 2011 HD Collection and this is basically just a straight port of that.
I pirate games when they are delisted, unfairly priced or are terrible PC ports. Console games I of course pirate since I don't have room or money for 30 game consoles. I never pirate indies and I never pirate games that are fairly priced and readily available. But I don't get suckered either. Balance in the force I say
Best example I can think of for a fair and quality PC port is Freedom Fighters. Upscaled to modern resolution, textures look better, everything about the gameplay preserves and unchanged, $15 price tag. That's how it should be done for these old games, a standalone faithful and QOL improved port for a fair price. Cos if your persona 3 portable I'm just gunna steal you lol
I don’t care if this collection does poorly. I just want Konami to someday make MGS4 playable. Though I doubt they will take the time to remaster it digitally
I disagree with everything muta is saying. I don’t understand how he thinks he can possibly solve the problem of company’s doing the bare minimum on products like metal gear collection. The game is still going to be bought by many, many people who have never played a metal gear game before. I think it’s really great we can buy these older games still on newer consoles now.
The one thing this collection offers over emulation for me is the potential of modding the games. Imma hold of for a while before I buy anything though.
Bro I had a tradition for MGS2, any time I started, either from beginning or where I left off, the first thing I did was yeet Snake/Raiden down a flight of stairs, and that is exactly what I'm going to do when I am finally able to play the Master collection
Not everyone has a PS3 or PC. So this Vol 1 release is the only way some people can enjoy the classics. Scam or not. Everytime Muta says dont buy this game or that game, his answer is always "just emulate it."
Because that's the only logic answer. If you buy an overpriced product, all you're doing is letting that company know you're ok with it and they will most likely keep doing it. Also if you can't play the originals, why waste $80 on games you can just emulate for free? while also having a better experience
@MarcuStar745XD Literally what my comment was about, how can you emulate without a PC. Not everyone owns a PC. Plus every game company is scamming people, its all about money nowadays. You can't reach everyone and tell them not to buy something or how to spend their money. There's always going to be more people buy it than those who choose not to. Same with sports games there are way too many people out there who are still going to buy yearly sports game releases. Not me, but if that's how they choose to spend their money so be it. These company's have become so wealthy and so large not buying their games won't chnage anything because they all have their own fanbases that will buy them no matter what. If I could emulate the games I would, but the MGS collection is my only option so I'll be buying it because those games were awesome as a kid and I'd like to revisit them, as well as play the few I never got to.
Have to agree with you on this. It is the only way for some people to play it and that’s fine. I want these remasters/rereleases to do well so newer generations of people who wouldn’t bother with them can experience them; they are some of the best games in my opinion ever made. I bought it and I have a pc that can emulate these titles pretty easily minus the ps3 stuff. To be fair to other points of view you can literally build a cheap pc for around 300 bucks and emulate everything up to Wii U and switch (and some ps3 at native). I have a dell optiplex 3070 i5 9500 cpu and 16gb ram ($150 on eBay) with an rx 6400 gpu (150 on Newegg) it does everything up to switch/wii u and quite a few ps3 games at ps3 level specs/native ps3 frame rates/resolution. Emulate if you can buy if you can’t and even buy if you want to support companies rereleasing old titles for new generations of gamers to enjoy. We’re all adults spend your money how you want at the end of the day ya know😊
"Before you start reaching for scissors, 61" ahhh when I first played mgs2 the colonel glitching out freaked me out so much. It didn't help that I was running through that part of the game in the middle of the night Dx
One thing to note about emulation of MGS 2 and 3. Both rely on pressure sensitive face buttons on both PS2 and 3. The 360 had a separate button mapping. This essentially means that you can no longer pre aim automatic weapons and in mgs3 you can no longer hostage grab enemies and interrorage them before knocking them out. You just slit their throat. That being said there are workarounds such as remapping a pressure toggle button. But its not convenient regardless.
@craigsampson3386 360 version I could never get to work properly. Would get to the game select screen and crash when one was selected. And xenia isnt exactly built with user friendliness in mind lol
@@ForgedHorizons damn that sucks. Wonder if its more of an emulator problem? Or maybe something wrong with your PC? Idk i havn't dabbled that deep with emulators before.

I hope you know, no matter what type of mood I'm in or how bad my day has gone, when I click on one of your videos and you say "Hello guys and gals, me Mutahar" it ALWAYS brings a smile to my face. Thanks for being you.
Muta, I'm very excited about this collection even with these issues. I can't wait to play MGS on steam and I already mostly only play PC games on controller and I have a steam deck. Like you I was raised playing MGS on PSX since 1998 and I obsess about it on a daily basis. Emulating MGS3 looks like shit if you look at the micro details. It has this blurred effect that can be turned off in PCSX2 but it causes other issues (like shaky screen). On top of the blur, MGS3 emulated has a very ugly effect that makes it look like Big Boss has a duplicated model ghosted over the character and again it's a pain to fix and the fix causes other issues (to fix this you either need to remove that layer or change the x and y position of some setting to something like -250, -250 to fix the issue but then shadows can be off). I have a backwards compatible CECHA PS3 just for MGS and the whole series as it's the only place you can play every MG but now I'll be able to do that on my Steam Deck and PC on a platform that don't cycle out like consoles do (I'm pretty sure MGS4 is coming in Vol.2).
Honestly, I was actually planning on getting this mostly for the achievements and to show it on my steam library, I know I can practically emulate a good chunk of those games on a raspberry pi, but I feel I just needed another person to tell me it ain't worth it and Muta, I'm glad it was you.
exactly same reason for me lol, the must consooom was taking over my brain because its metal gear… but the 60 usd price tag and then finally muta, snapped me out of it
I guess you could use the new FSR3 To generate some frames, for it to look like its running more than 30fps, without you running the game at twice the speed.
the actual advantage of playing the PS3 HD collection are the upscaled textures and redrawn HUD elements make it look crisp and clean, and i'm hoping this is a change they're willing to port over..
As much as I agree with you, I think now is the best time than ever to show Konami that we really WANT this franchise to come back and to continue with the re-releases considering PS4 only had MGSV.
When the ps3 MGS legacy collection came with a digital version of mgs 1, i run and bought the ps1 CD. After the ps4 came out with a "share" button and no retro compatibility, remakes were being sold and influencers were being paid to fool people, i decided not to go along. So the "newest" console i own is PS3. I can play mgs on the ps1, ps2, psp, ps3 and emulators on pc.
What is up with Muta today? Normally he will convert CAD to USD, but chose not to for the entirety of this video. Normally he does the research and doesn't have to ask why Twin Snakes can't be ported (Spoiler: it's notoriously stuck in copyright purgatory) It's like he just woke up and wanted to fight Konami today; especially since we've known all of this stuff about the MGS collection for weeks now.
This video has tons of misinformation and out of date complaints that have been addressed by Konami. It no longer requires a controller, which is dumb, mind you, and it also contains bug fixes that were not present in previous releases of the games.
I can't believe Konami is the company that once released Metal Gear Solid 2 and Silent Hill 2 within months of each other. This is how they are now. Wow.
No, that's a DLC Battle. Pass. Feature for speed runner achievement acceptance. If you pay $54.99 a month, they'll consider your a speed runner and now allow the game be to be able to be sped up by 500 fifths. You know, not too much, but just enough to give people an edge if they want to pay for it.

You absolutely can program a pachinko machine to use mouse and keyboard though
The Twin Snakes thing is actually a licensing issue. Nintendo helped fund development of the game and Miyamoto's name is even in the intro credits.
If that's the case, then maybe they could have found a way to release it for the Switch and have an extra incentive for people to go for the Switch version of the collection.. but regardless, I personally don't plan on getting this collection.

Why put in the effort when you can copy/paste an old game with a few cosmetic buffs and nostalgic fan boys will buy it anyway?

honestly in this case, i would want v1 to succeed since that would mean the people who refuse to emulate for whatever reason would be able to play the old mgs games, which could eventually lead to them being able to play mgs4 if v1's sales do well enough. and if mgs4 gets ported over to current gen platforms, then that means that the game will have a lot more accessibility on what platform you want to play the game, which will be good for everyone at the end of the day

“We put the white gloves on and just whatever needed to be touched up or trimmed just to modernize them. We did that and then the rest we just left as it was, because that was the intent.”
He also didn't note that Konami announced they put KB support into all the games with mouse support for MGS2 and 3.

some games are coded around framerates tbf. sonic adventure is locked at 30 because sonic's speed is tied to framerate. DX breaks so heavily because the doubled framerate causes speed issues which break collision detection.

Wow seriously? That is lame

The MGS2 SoS camera is a fun way to play it.

I just remember messing around with it (before resetting my Emudeck settings) where the Reddit post mentioned to set it to a certain percentage, and I could use one of the back buttons on the Steam Deck to activate it... actually makes it a bit easier than the pressure buttons cause I remember half the time not letting go slow enough and firing my gun anyways while holding up an enemy lol
The main issue I would say is that considering most standard controllers these days have the same amount of buttons as back then (while only a few have the "behind the controller" buttons... this would be one of those good times to have those buttons...) that is what would make emulating the pressure sensitivity harder sadly :/
Just set the pressure deadzone to like 10%, that way you have to fully press it to fully press and anything else is just a light touch, it isn't hard.
@@flingymingy that sounds like a good solution. Which emulator and under which setting would this deadzone % be?
The HD collection in the Xbox version simply puts an additional button to un-aim your gun. Because Xbox controller doesn't have that sensitivity
I think the collection is a pretty nice package even on Switch, because the ports don't have stretched HUDS in widescreen (which irk me)
They even rectified a couple GFX errors from bluepoint's original remasters.

Also taught us about the rise of AI, the rise of PMC’s and a war based economy.. and even how to manage a PMC company
My only issue with not buying the collection would be that Konami may go "oh, the collection isn't selling, guess we shouldn't release Volume 2 with Metal Gear Solid 4 then" as while you do make a good point that, yeah emulating can be the way to go, it's not like everyone has a 4000 or even 3000 series graphics card that can run the PS3 emulator easily (the emulator says it recommends a 660 at the very least, but obviously the bare minimum will return with the bare minimum playability, while Steam put out a 980 is the "recommended" hardware, so it *should* play well on even low end GPUs... if Konami isn't lying)
But besides that, most casual people wanting to try/play the games won't go through the hoops of setting up an emulator, let alone have the copies to backup and play (as can't say to pirate the game, especially when a new version is "coming soon" and it feels like people say "just pirate it, the games aren't available anymore anyways" and then when a developer does come out with it, people advocate to pirate anyways)
Could the games be at a cheaper price due to being 20'ish year old games now? Sure.
But we are also coming from a time where games are being remade/ported and still being charged $60 at the end of the day.
Not to mention, I don't see much modding occurring on games that are emulated unless they are Nintendo games. It'd be a bit neat if the collection got people to mod the games now since it will be more readily available. (more people know about Steam than GOG... sadly...)
This is coming from someone that even owns Twin Snakes so it doesn't bother me as much personally, but I see why people would still get it. (... and while I like TS's control and camera scheme more, I hate that they literally took out the main alert theme from the game, replacing it with less exciting themes... there are more songs, but they just don't have the same feeling to them)
The RPCS3 emulator is more CPU dependent than GPU. This doesn't necessarily weaken your overall point though, as even people with powerful GPUs are going to struggle playing RPCS3 MGS games, as it still requires a powerful CPU.
@@centricthemedic1517 Yeah... glad you knew what I meant hahaha
Cause yeah, it's like how tech people make it sound so easy to emulate games, but at the same time, said tech people invest in those good PCs. (I mean Muta has a 4090, that is a GPU that less than 1% of PC users probably have, and he probably has the top of the line CPU too as well as other high end things, considering his job too) It's not like everyone has a powerhouse PC to run the emulators themselves (running SNES emulator vs a PS3 emulator are pretty different in terms of power)
Pretty much why I do get where he is coming from... but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of his audience doesn't even have the capability to run RPCS3, vs purchasing a $60 collection that *should* be more optimized to run on a PC. (but knowing Konami, they may not have even optimized it too since they couldn't even bother to make keyboard controls)
I'd honestly just wait for a review to see how well it played on PC if I was a casual player (and if you need an above decent PC too haha...)
Otherwise have fun not being able to aim your gun without HAVING to shoot
ive heard you cant do the stab in mgs due to no pressure button functions
and the lower weapon is ive heard mapped to L3 on controller

Twin snakes is definitely a licensing issue
Twin Snakes is not only a legal nightmare but MGS fans actually hate how "Over the top" Twin Snakes is and prefer the PS1 release because of how *Grounded* it is. So as far as Konami sees, it's not worth trying to deal with that legal warzone for a game you're going to get sh*t for releasing when you're already getting shit for releasing exactly what people asked for.

You mean MG. MG and MG2 are the father to MGS. MGS even has a reference to the MG2 ending fight when Snake is looking at his inventory.
Wasn't Twin Snakes also partly attached to the pariah that was Silicon Knights too?

While I do prefer The Twin Snakes myself. I think there are two possible reasons:
1. There are cameos of Mario & Yoshi in the game. Could be an issue if it was multiplatform.
2. Silicon Knights, the company Konami hired to develop THE TWIN SNAKES, went bankrupt about a decade ago.
Bro no way, I was pissed when they wouldn’t add PS4 controls ui for pc ports but this is just on another level!
I do wish Twin Snakes was included especially for the price tag :(
Keyboard and mouse support Is Included, It was shown off at Tokyo Game Show.
IMO all remasters should have basic customizable features like input mapping, but I don't think stuff like 4k or ultrawide or whatever is necessary.
Muta cutting it close with that “Metur Gear Solid” at 1:22
I got sepsis right now, and hearing you say "with the boys" makes me smile. Thanks for the vid man
The one thing this collection offers over emulation for me is the potential of modding the games. Imma hold of for a while before I buy anything though.
I love Muta's gameplay, he had to include falling while trying to dodge roll down stairs, we've all done it😂😂😂
Bro I had a tradition for MGS2, any time I started, either from beginning or where I left off, the first thing I did was yeet Snake/Raiden down a flight of stairs, and that is exactly what I'm going to do when I am finally able to play the Master collection
@@MarcuStar745XD Sorry to bother you. I just preordered the steam-release of this collection.
Or emulate the 360 version.
Vita remapped it aswell, to the down button on the D pad.

THIS!
Konami died the moment they went full-pachinko.
I know it hurts but we ALL need to let it go.
Honestly, I was actually planning on getting this mostly for the achievements and to show it on my steam library, I know I can practically emulate a good chunk of those games on a raspberry pi, but I feel I just needed another person to tell me it ain't worth it and Muta, I'm glad it was you.
Actually, I don't think the pi can do 6th gen emulation. They are just a little too weak.
exactly same reason for me lol, the must consooom was taking over my brain because its metal gear… but the 60 usd price tag and then finally muta, snapped me out of it
This isnt anything new from Konami. If they can scam Yugioh players from the US, they will definitely scam metal gear players as well.
I guess you could use the new FSR3 To generate some frames, for it to look like its running more than 30fps, without you running the game at twice the speed.
