  • Utah's San Rafael Swell is a 40 by 75 mile area that has eroded into many valleys, canyons, gorges, mesas, and buttes. The San Rafael Swell is filled with old mines, abandoned vehicles, and historic cabins and structures. Swasey's Cabin is one such structure. Utah's San Rafael Swell is an off roader's paradise and Eagle Canyon is one of the best trails in the Swell.
In this video I took I-70 exit 131, Temple Mountain Road, and drove to Swasey's Cabin to take in some history, then continued down the trail into Eagle Canyon.

You absolutely made the right decision. Coming up out of the lower end of the canyon in the snow would have been a nightmare. Come back when it's dry, and come in from the other end.

I think you made the right call. No sense in adding unnecessary risk, especially when your out alone.

Good choice. Come back another day.

I love it, and I love that you didn't try to squeeze around a boulder on loose ground on the edge of a canyon!

Looked like you made the right decision. You have to be more careful when you're wheeling alone. Great video. I love the drone shots at 2:00!

It's good to know your limitations and error on the side of safety

It’s most likely a long walk back to the parking area, you made the right choice.

Did you have your winch at the time? I would have winched it back to that wider spot where you turned around, but it's hard to say as video doesn't do justice to what you experience on the ground.

You could've squeezed around the rock. The edge of the road would've held. But coming up out of the other end of Eagle Canyon is much more difficult, so you probably did the right thing by turning around.

Probably could have made it but there's no telling how the rest of the trail is and if you got stuck you might have had to hike out. Temple Mountain road is more heavily traveled and in better condition for winter off-roading.

Beautiful scenery. What kind of camera are you using?

This was recorded with 2 GoPro3+ Blacks, a Sony a6000, and my Galaxy S9+ phone mounted in a DJI OSMO Mobile 2 gimbal.

Domo arigato!!! Did you have your rifle ready? Rabbit tracks 3:14. I think you made the right decision - you were cutting fresh tracks in the snow. You get stuck out there and your in for the long haul, probably not going to see anyone any time soon. Having said that I think you cold have moved the rock but the washout beyond did not look so great.

IMHO when you’re by yourself you should always error on the side of caution when in the wilderness. You don’t wanna be the story of the guy who had to saw off his own arm to survive 🤓
