Nothing worse than health professions saying the word manage. Another way of saying we won't treat the embedded infection.

My 87 year old mother has had 3 so far this year (as of May 2018). They have all led to hospitalisation due to extreme confusion. It has become a very tiresome experience. She is in hospital now as I write. My doctor has suggested that she might benefit from taking a long term preventative, low level, antibiotic as part of her regular medication. She has yet to start this new regime. I hope it is effective.

This is what I would like to get my 89 yr old grandma on. She's had so many and sufferers from delirium when they get bad. The doctors are all so slow to recognize that she has an infection, won't take the word of the family. So we have to wait until it escalates to being an emergency. Her dr won't agree to the low dose treatment . Frustrating.

@@kellystone5387 Hi. Two years on from my last comment, and my mother is now 89 yr old herself. She did start the regime of taking the low level preventative anti-biotic and it helped the situation enormously. Her UTI infections became considerably more infrequent. She did still occasionally get them, but this was probably partly due to the fact that if someone stays on the same anti-biotic for too long, bacteria eventually becomes immune to it. So the type of anti-biotic someone takes has to be changed occasionally. With my mother this happened every 3-4 months or so. But it really did improve her quality of life. I live in the UK. I don't know what the policy of American doctors is, but in the UK I know that doctors are sometimes reluctant to put an elderly person on a long term regime of anti-biotics because it can be demanding on internal organs, like the kidneys. But, overall, I believe it is definitely worth it. There is no point in living an extra few months, when a large proportion of the last few years of life is spent plagued by delirium.
In the past I have been in the frustrating position you are now in with doctors. When a person is very elderly, doctors sometimes too readily dismiss their confusion, that you know is symptomatic of a UTI infection, as dementia. As a family member this can be distressing when only a few days earlier you had been having a perfectly coherent conversation with them. I have had to strongly insist that a urine sample be taken and tested. And when this is eventually done and the UTI infection is recognised and they eventually receive anti-biotics, they are fully back to normal again within 2-3 days. I hope all goes well with you and your grandma.

@@peterc9153 Thanks for your reply. I didn't even notice how old the post was. I'm in Canada here & our tests for UTI's are pretty unreliable. I know that her dr agrees that they are unreliable bc he used to be my dr and had admitted it. My grandmother got so poorly one time that they actually called in the family to discuss hospice options. The next day we came in and she was starting to eat again. (The IV antibiotics kicked in). Regardless they still refuse & since I'm not my grandmother's power of attorney, I have no say.
I'm an very glad to hear that your Grandmother has done better these past couple of years, that's awesome! Take care!

Try D-Mannose. This is easily available on line from Amazon, and also in Vitamin stores. It is a sugar, added to water, twice a day, am and pm. The bacteria that cause UTI’s have an affinity for this sugar, and attach themselves to the sugar Instead of accumulating and growing in the bladder and are excreted. This has been a successful remedy for me, when antibiotics only worked, basically, for as long as I used them, and returned as often as every three to four weeks. Found out about this from a friend who had a similar story. Definitely worth a try. Have been symptom free for a long time now.
