Firm handshake for the eldest (who he knows is named after him), compliment for the daughter who’s just figured out she's pretty, and some fun and encouragement for the kids. Just straight killing it. That’s why he’s the king 😆
One of my favourite throwaway dialogue bits in the whole show is when Barristan and Jorah are talking about the siege of Pyke. Jorah says that after fighting in full plate all day all he could think about as Robert was laying his sword across his shoulders was not becoming the first knight in history to piss on the king's boots. To which Barristan responded with a hearty chuckle and said "Robert would have laughed." Everyone loved the _person_ Robert was, it was just blindingly clear from the outset that he was not equipped to handle major responsibilities. He knew it himself, even. Other people's machinations put him on a throne he didn't want so much as have to take for the war to end. It's really a shame. He was a good person, a great friend, a Norm from Cheers who could also cave your head in with a warhammer, but he was all but condemned by Jon Arryn to a role both of them knew he neither wanted nor was suited for.
Something about this scene is so good in regards to the Robert/Ned dynamic; this is just exactly what it’s like when you go a long time without seeing a dude who’s been your best friend for years. Just instantly taking the piss out of each other and laughing, as I’ve gotten older and saw some close friends less as we’re all busy with life I kind of worry that we aren’t as close anymore. Then you do see them and it’s instantly just like this and you realise that’s your bro forever
Robb/Jon/Theon all smirking as Ned takes Arya's helmet off is such a great little moment for establishing that these people are a real family. They all knew what she was doing with that on instantaneously. This whole episode was strong on that, from the archery bit with Bran and Arya and Ned just breaking down laughing as Bran runs after her, and the scene where Robb/Jon/Theon have to shave. Even the little "Fuck if I know" shrug-and-eyebrow Sansa gives when Cat asks where Arya is feels so perfectly Older Sister Saying Why is This _My_ Problem As someone with three siblings, the writers and actors both managed to make them look _very_ convincingly like an actual human family, and that takes some subtle bits if you really want to sell it. I remember watching this with my older brother and sister and just side-eyeing the shit out of each other across the couch the whole time and we kept just breaking down laughing and eventually our parents were like "Fuck this, we're watching this in our room from now on." Such a good episode.
When Robert said “you got fat” he is not telling Ned that he is fat. He is speaking the words that are in Neds mind but would not dare said it to insult his King. So Robert saids it and insults himself cause they are cool friends like that.
Haha Hodor is in the line of Formal greetings right next to the Kids. Man Eddard Stark was a true good man, respecting his childhood friend that had a seizure/episode from his perspective but faithfully served House Stark his entire life and lined him up equal to his family members and knights.
Hodor was the unsung hero of this series. Had he not died for Bran, the white walkers would have killed him and the long night would have turned out much differently at the final battle at Winterfell.

Also forgot to teach Sansa how to uphold her own vows, or Jon not to go stabbing his own family, or that baking people into pies is not cool, then accusing others of being murderers, but you know - minor details.
Love the soldier camaraderie in this scene with the “you got fat.” line. That is why Ned Stark is a great character and even after his death his character became even better after learning that he chose to sacrifice his honor, publicly recognizing John as his bastard son to protect his sister. Ned is probably the only character from the original main cast who did not get ruined with the last seasons (not including Sansa, Arya or John of course). Something interesting is that we got a hint in episode 1x05 when falsely claimed to have Caitlyn kidnapped Tyrion by his orders, at that moment we saw that he was fully capable of taking responsability to protect his family and those he loves most
@@saptarshidas8100 In Roberts mind, Lyanna got kidnapped by Rhaegar and I'm sure no one would ever be able to convince him that she just loved the guy. So Jon would just be a product of rape (in Roberts mind atleast)...can't imagine he thinks too fondly of that
This is how you setup the world building and the characters: few words, just looks and manners. See how arrogant and haughty is Cersei. Gods, the show was strong then :|
I mean I know this is the start of the story but doesn’t everyone wish we got to see life at Winterfell with all the Starks before they all go their separate ways
You read more in the books as the characters reflect.

Three-Eyed Raven: You couldn’t be MORE incorrect!
that expression of ned...so as..you...❤❤😂
"Ooo, show us your muscle."
*chuckles* "you'll be a cripple"
If they ever do a show about robert’s rebellion. They should get Clive Standen to play Robert. Perfect.
His cloak must've gotten really muddy after that.
Interestingly, King Robert only touched the Starks who later died in the series. I mean Ned, Catelyn, Rob and Rickon.
Robert: Your name is????
Arya: No one ..
Man oh man if Robert knew John was rhaegars son lol smh
That is why Ned Stark is a great character and even after his death his character became even better after learning that he chose to sacrifice his honor, publicly recognizing John as his bastard son to protect his sister.
Ned is probably the only character from the original main cast who did not get ruined with the last seasons (not including Sansa, Arya or John of course).
Something interesting is that we got a hint in episode 1x05 when falsely claimed to have Caitlyn kidnapped Tyrion by his orders, at that moment we saw that he was fully capable of taking responsability to protect his family and those he loves most
@@nicolasdiez7688 for sure. Cus Robert would of definitely cut John head off and put it on a spike
Jon was also Lyanna's son. So I think Robert would have been in a dilemma about killing Jon. Remember Robert is not an evil person.
The King is clearly a man who enjoys the company of friends and families. Then you get the smug face of that wonderful actor named Jack Gleeson. And Rob Stark clearly suspicious, must be a smart man. And Jamie Lannister who looks like a god or a lion, clearly a swordsman.
Without Rob and Ned the realm shattered.
There's something funny about Arya calling Tyrion an imp. Did these two ever talk to each other in the show?
Robert relax, lyanna isn’t going anywhere lmao
This is actually how Northerners greet each other.
I’m sorry I just hear Martin septim when I hear Sean bean 😂❤
I always thought Robert was such an interesting, flawed and human character, and to most viewers he went under the radar because he was overshadowed by the other characters that were more likable
