BMW E46 & Z4 Powerflex Polyurethane Lower Control Arm Bushing Tutorial

- Installing Powerflex PFF5-4601BLK Polyurethane bushings into existing factory BMW brackets can be difficult. Here is how I do it. Some of these tips maybe useful for any E85, E46, or E86 car, other BMW applications or similar polyurethane bushings in other makes and models.

Thank you for your time on this one! Rubber, even high durometer, doesn't last forever; a predictable, firm suspension/steering setup inspires confidence while driving. Predictable is what my dad always used to say is a key to driving confidence and comfort.

Thanks to @Racecars N'at for letting me now the the "heat shield is called a subframe reinforcement plate and the 8 mounting bolts should be TTY ( Torqued to yield ) 59Nm + 90 deg

Yeah these bushings can make a huge difference. On my Lexus IS200 the control arm bushings fixed a massive brake judder too. Thanks for the detailed video, great education and entertainment :)

My preference for street use is the Rogue Engineering bushings and for track use the Turner monoballs. These look good too
I had bad LCA bushings on my Grand Vitara, I wish I was as savy then as now.
The bushings were GM style I could've tracked down some replacements, Regretfully I swapped control arms.
Later I lifted the vehicle and became very interested in adjustable lower control arms to fix camber in a manner superior to camber plates and spherical bearings.
Since no adjustable LCA's were available I was going to weld-in a threaded tube adapter and go with HD heims.
Good Video Paul, this will probably help a lot of ppl because those are bushings like to rot out and compromise a vehicle fairly dramatically.

I wasnt involved with these transmissions at all. I do not plan on doing any videos on these.

Good to know. Could not find in the BMW TIS the specs on the heat shield/ reinforcement plate
@@GearBoxVideo FCP Euro notes it in the description. The Bentley manual says 59 Nm +90 deg + an additional 30 deg. They also call out the bushing bracket bolts as single use. 59 Nm again, but no angle.

Thanks for the effort now, how about the ride quality? I've heard about jolting & super stiff uncomfortable rides due to lack of shock absorption with these things, are these claims true?
There is no difference in ride quality. These bushings stabilize the control arms a bit firmer. So you may feel the road more thru your steering wheel. So roads that have rough pavement transmit that roughness thru the wheel. It is really not noticable on the street. I have the M sport suspension so its pretty stiff as is.
@@GearBoxVideo What was your reason for buying this over the regular arm bushing say from Meyle HD or Lemforder, any detailed reason?
Im sure the stock bushings from Meyle and Lemforder are fine. Since my factory bushings failed I wanted to try something non rubber.

Would this also apply to a 2001 E39? Great clip.
The techniques involved can apply to any bushing installation. Just some tips like grinding the bushing flat before pressing it out. If your e39 has the same setup, then yes. I'm not a power flex dealer. So, I do not know if they carry bushings for that car. You would have to contact them

Just dont use Powerflex YELLOW color for your FCABS. They are TOO SOFT and wear out in 10K miles. I use their Yellows for my sub frame bushings. They last 40-50K and then need to be replaced.
I would use NGK for my FCABS. Only I loved going back to OEM stock FCABS.
TOO MUCH NVH for me with poly up front.
My RTABS are a hard 95a durometer NGK brand. NGK last forever.
I like the way the car feels with the black powerflex
