No tomatoes was used in this recipe. Just Tatashe (Bell Pepper), Onion, Scotch bonnet for the sauce. 🔥🌶

      But can tomatoes be added?

Yes I can't cook this kind of soup without tomatoes, but it's her choice though.

Sisi Yemmie, one year later, I decided to try your efo riro recipe, I wanted something different. You said my neighbors will be smelling it while I’m cooking but I was not smelling anything. I was like, let me just pretend my neighbors are smelling it and continue (it’s a duplex).
To my surprise, yesterday, my neighbor confessed that they kept smelling the delicacy. I said let me share the testimony with sisi Yemisi oh.
I tell my friends and family all the time that your recipes are fail-proof.

The story you said at the end reminds me of my choosy brother's response to efo riro. My mom is an Igbo woman but we were leaving in Lagos so she learnt to cook certain soups like this particular one. My brother complained about how he couldn't eat it. Then we begged him until he tasted it. By the time it was morning, we saw hidden plates under his bed. Lo and Behold, he had stolen the soup and eaten eba with it.

The eru is not smelling badly because it is not well fermented. The smelling ones are well fermented and are the best. Healthy too for your intestines.

Hello Yemi. At the preparation of the eforiro what you showed us the viewers that you blended was different types of pepper and onion. When it was time to start mixing ingredients into your cooking pot, you mentioned tomatoes twice as supposed to pepper. My query is this, was tomatoes ever used for the cooking or was it a slip of tongue you mentioning tomato?

I think the western name for the vegetable is Amaranth (Callaloo for the jamaicans, Aleho (pronounce alay-ho)(for my Plateau State Nigerians), Shoko for the Yorubas). This is my favorite stew of all time. My mom would make it for the family and I'd eat half the pot alone--no eba, no rice, no joke.
