And what jxmy saying is that if this might seem confusing there is a simple explanation : evolution. Between different eras the game has changed alot. And one of the reasons is quantity. Yes quantity affect quality. More teams brings more players. More players brings more competition. More competition leads to increase the odds of improving so you can win which finally leads to more odds for a new star to come up. And as a new star is born others will be inspired ahd motivated to get better so they could stay close or even pass him. A self powered circle. In one word evolution. Which explains why the average level of today's era is better than those from former eras. Which again explains why as the years pass a more complete and better player will consider as the goat. So far we have Bill and Wilt, then Magic Kareem and Larry, then MJ and we might have to wait so we can see who will surpass MJ. I know some don't believe this is possible but in 100 years from now maybe not even one of this players will be in the eternally goat convo.
Luka Doncic was available when the Sacramento Kings were determining who to select with their draft pick. The Sacramento Kings selected Marvin Bagley instead of Luka Doncic.
Jimmy needs a spot/segment on ESPN or something. This is seriously some of the best, well thought out, and impressively researched content I’ve ever seen period
His content wouldn't be as good if he were on ESPN. Just imagine if 90% of his videos exclusively talked about the Lakers. Thats basically what ESPN would do to him
I really do feel like Curry is playing at a MVP level currently, the Warriors just need to get their act together and if Curry can continue this, he can win it.
Dude, Jimmy, take this as a compliment. I truly don’t care the first thing about the NBA, but I watch your stuff because you’re so good at what you do. Your videos are simply incredible, keep doing what you do man.
The problem is, most of these guys aren't going to maintain this level of production for the rest of the season. 1 of the 12 players who are having a historical season is going to maintain their elite level of production, and they'll win the MVP.
Luka just put up a career game. 60pts, 21reb, 10assists, he hit a buzzar beater shot to take it to OT, and won the Mavs the game. He has been doing these type of things on regular days. He’s the MVP
Once again, Jxmy is always setting the standard. Every time I see a new video I feel excitement, I already know it’ll be good. While I’m watching the video I’m engaged the whole time. And when the video ends I always feel satisfied. How does he do it
Steph shooting the best TS% in NBA HISTORY while averaging 32/7/7 is most impressive to me. And when you factor his immeasurable factors like off ball movement, screen, gravity. I can't believe he's 10th

@@timmytheinventor4746 the Mavericks will be a winning by the end of the season and even if they don’t Luka will still win it. He’s just that good. Don’t @ me
Two big points you didn't mention: 1. Totals are highly correlated to pace. Change it to per 100 possessions instead of per game and they're still great, but not best ever 2. This is a 20 game sample, and over the course of a full season most of the crazy numbers from the beginning go back to earth
Yup, pace always gets ignored for whatever reason. Take pace into account and Wilt goes from unbelievable numbers to very good numbers, LeBron goes from "omg hes just as good at this age" to "hes good but nowhere near what he was" and for Kobe/Jordan it makes it vastly more impressive what they did. If you take into account all the rule changes and how easy defensive fouls are to commit now and you'll see the numbers shift even more back to normalcy.
@@mosstwig3591 Kobe is long retired and LBJ is still playing, what are you talking about? They won a combined 4 titles while the other was not in the League.
@@mosstwig3591 their peaks dont overlap at all, Kobes peak in the early/mid 2000s was during some of the lowest scoring (if not THE lowest) the league has ever seen, the 90s were very similar. LeBrons career basically follows the trens of higher scoring games which has made his longevity seem vastly better than it is in reality. He has noticeably declined but if the average scoring keeps increasing even if he contributes less and less he'll still be around the same, its the same reason why former NBA players will tell you that MJ would average 45-50 without a hint of irony cause he could break 40 easily.
I’m glad I wasn’t going insane thinking this was the most mind boggling start to a season. Shits way beyond anything seen in the sport before. Hope it keeps up.
Hopefully, you upload an update on this after the all star break. There are still so many games left , some of them would go back to Earth for sure. But yes, it is always fun to see these great players in action.
I’ve been saying this for a while but there should be MVP and also Offensive Player of the Year award similar to the NFL simply because we’re living in an age of unbelievable offensive production and it feels wrong to leave guys out of that recognition. If this was the case, in this season so far we could have Giannis be MVP (better all round player offense and defense) and Doncic get Offensive Player of the Year for his insane PER and offensive stats.
@@jonnythekill123 Nope. Jokic may be the best ever offensive center. But he isn't the greatest scorer for them. Also, this award would measure efficiency. Someone can get the scoring title by averaging 35 points on 44% shooting but he isn't better than the guy who who averaged 33.5 on 56% shooting is he?

The quality of his videos the stats that he shows is just sooo good. I don't even know this was happening. I'm so hyped up this season. In Jimmy's content I trust 💜
yo jimmy can you make a video on players like jeremy lin, derrick rose, and blake griffin? like a what - if video about rookies who started off really well and then went downhill from there? I've been watching ur content for 3 years now and i love it so much. would really appreciate bro. thanks.
Not sure you can put those three players into the same box of "rookies who started off well and then went downhill". Rose was an MVP with multiple great seasons before an injury compromised him and now he's still playing well but not at the same level. Griffin is a similar story but was never anywhere near as great as Rose. Lin had an amazing stretch of games in one season and that's about all that can be said for him. So, again, three very different players.
Of all the players in the race, many of them continuously put up insane numbers when they play. But Jokic is the one scariest for me. Man was not even dropping offensive numbers at the start of the season cause of his healthy teammates back, but he came into the 3rd-fourth place because of his past two games. He's ability to achieve that is insanely crazy to me.
coming back to the end of the regular season, currently there are 5 people who finished the season averaging over 31 ppg, there are 7 people with over a score of 42 in ppg+rpg+apg and steph and shai cudve been 8th and 9th if they had done only a little better, as they scored 41.7 and 41.8. not only this, but KD has the highest true shooting percentage with 67.7% for a person scoring at least 25, 26, 27, 28 and even 29 ppg in a season, and he accomplished this in the 2022-2023 season. Additionally, at 74.4%, louis king is doing the same for at least 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20+ ppg this season. Jokic is doing the exact same for 21, 22, 23, and 24+ ppg at 70.1 ts%. This season, true shooting records were set all the way from at least 13 ppg to scoring at least 29 ppg. That is absolutely incredible. 2 of the 5 greatest nba games of all time according to gamescore were played this season, 3 of the 10 greatest, and 4 of the 15 greatest. Thats absurd. For anyone who said this wasn't going to continue when this video was published, you were 90% wrong. The stats are still crazier than ever. Edit: After reading all the comments and critism about how jymx cherry picks data, well, it feels great for you to be completely wrong.
I think this is a great discussion of how players are scoring absurd numbers, but I think an adjustment for "points inflation" is necessary to really talk about these trends. I'm not sure exactly sure what that adjustment would look like, but it would be interesting to see how they stack up when you normalize for league-wide trends.
My guy jimmy's voice when talking about my favourite player Steph was just funny. Just tells how unique the this season is. All time seasons and only one award. A nice time to be an NBA fan🙂🙂
The problem with the PPG graphic is that nowadays defense is treated with much more scrutiny resulting in higher amounts of foul calls and points. Teams are giving up more shots and transitioning to a completely offensive game which is why you can expect 9/10 games to go triple digits and beyond. I think the mvp caliber players are all good scorers but these numbers are heavily inflated from just playing in a different era.
This should be factored in and is definitely worth a mention. The league is so slanted towards offense nowadays in terms of foul calls and rules (players can take three steps sometimes even more, moving screens are rarely called, etc.) that you do have to take these insane numbers with a grain of salt. Players are averaging so many points because the league wants them to. Look no further than their international numbers to prove it.
Bullshit, only Embiid and Lebron averaged over 30ppg last season, same for the season before it was Curry and Bradley beal. Players are just on fire this season, Curry, KD, Giannis, Embiid, Jokic, Kawhi, AD, Dame, PG, Kyrie, KAT ect are all in their prime and Lebron, Harden, Doncic, Tatum, Ja, Mitchell, Booker, SGA ect are close to their prime. The league just has never been this deep because their is no difference of playstyle, pace or rules between last season and this season .
Why do people keep thinking 34 is old. This isn't the 90's anymore. Sports training, medicine, rehab, diet, all have advanced significantly in the last 30 years. And Curry took a whole year off.
It will start to become more common, with advances in nutrition, training, sports science, etc. you will see the average "prime" of players start to extend into their mid 30's.
Bro's videos always puts things in perspective. Now I could tell that this season is different from any other one before, perhaps what feels like the most well-rounded season across the board. Can't wait to witness how it all unfolds
How the hell is it in perspective when he is comparing numbers from a 20 game sample to entire 82 game seasons. Doesn't not seem honest or genuine to me....
@@ryankayombya7576 yeah, but it’s unlikely that all 10 players having historic seasons will all have a drop off. We’ve already seen Giannis and steph do this and Luka was expected to do this. There might be a drop off but this season is still historically great
Great video Jimmy. Once again the information you somehow accumulate and disseminate is unlike any other. Always look forward to your videos! AND YES, this is one helluva year for the MVP run! That stat line about Steph owning all the spots, NO MATTER the points made, is just comical. (all the while scoring 31 or something is just mind boggling.😵)
In defence of the old-school MVP votes: It feels like the perception of the terminology has changed throughout the years. Like nowadays it often just comes down to "Best Player" while it originally was more like the player who was the best in relation to his teammates. To give a guy credit even if he didn't make play-offs with his trash team but popped off individually.

Awesome video. And these stats are mind blowing. Also, I always maintained that the MVP should be about the individual performance and value to the team, no matter the record of that team. Being on a bad team or playing with guys that are underperforming doesn't make it less of an accomplishment if you're playing on a high level, it makes it harder. The fact that Curry is 10th is just insane.

Great video! So many players playing great this year. Ja carries every single play, and Booker isn't close to those other guys, outside of that Lets Go!
These historic numbers are a byproduct of RULES. The pace of the game plus ease in defense caused it. The true measure of MVP is being the best player in the league.. regardless of stats. I can accept MVP with 20-8-4 stats, as long he is the clear cut best player in the league.
Defenses are better today, remove those nostalgia goggles and try to understand the game instead of clinging to dumb narratives The league is the most talented and deepest it has ever been, just accept or go go watch american football
@@rafikz77 I did not say defense today are worse. I agree defense today is better. And I agree that today the league is more talented. What I said defense today is more relax, due to RULES. Jxmy's data analysis contains heavy flaws or complete misrepresentation more often than not. He isn't even a bad data analyst (he's none), but he's a good tabloid storyteller.
Jimmy with bad take again and conveniently left out how easy it is to get combined 42 pts reb ast these days. Players averaging 27+ points and 15+ combined rebounds and assists are so common the past 5 years. So there are multiple (5+?) players each year with combined 42 stats in the past 5-7 years.
In a year such as this I think you simply go with the most gifted player since there’s nothing else to really separate the guys at the top. And I think that’s Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis is showing that he is the best two-way player of the league in this era. Monstrous numbers on the offensive end... But it pains me to say that his defensive numbers are impressive in this era. Seeing the stats of the other two (Jordan and Hakeem), I remember when defense was actually producing results. Nowadays, blocking someone AND stealing a ball once per game is impressive enough to win DPOY. Defense is at an all-time low in this era which is probably why these insane offensive numbers all of these stars are showing, though truly impressive and record-breaking, isn't as awe-inspiring to me as it should be. And before people call me an old-head, I'm just about to turn 26 this December. I'm just biased cause defense is my favorite part of any sport, including League of Legends.
Bro I went back and watched a 2006 suns game. The atmosphere and flow is so different compared to todays game I really fucking hate how commercialized sports is
@@ThunderSims Commercializing a sport brings in more money for the players which isn't a bad thing. But sacrificing half of the game (a.k.a. making defense way too difficult and offense way too easy) to pander to the casual majority isn't the way to go about it in my opinion.

Since these are complicated dynamics, I am sure there are many ways people want to contest your claims (e.g. looking at other metrics, normalizing metrics against league average etc.). But I have to say, the way you use dataviz and narrative devices is impressively compelling. I am a teacher in quantitative methods and I am honestly considering recommending your videos to students. Being able to tell a story based on numbers is not trivial. I think a lot of NBA "analysts" could learn a lot from you. Keep it up! Love your content!
Only reason SC was at 10 is because the Warriors are essentially a .500 team at the moment. NBA weighs team success really highly for MVP voting. His pure numbers would put him in the top 5 otherwise
Exactly, that's what I was thinking as well. The stats are historic, there's no doubt about that, but I think they will be less crazy after 82 games instead of 20
What’s crazy is Curry is, on average, about 10 years OLDER than the other people he’s in MVP conversations with. Haven’t seen a player play their best at age 34 since probably Bron. Gotta appreciate his greatness while he’s here.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate HighRollr’s enthusiasm while he’s educating us in these videos. He is a true basketball fan, probably the best on TH-cam

Two big points you didn't mention:
1. Totals are highly correlated to pace. Change it to per 100 possessions instead of per game and they're still great, but not best ever
Funny enough, the average nba pace per year has been at 100 or less for the entire 2000's.

He has noticeably declined but if the average scoring keeps increasing even if he contributes less and less he'll still be around the same, its the same reason why former NBA players will tell you that MJ would average 45-50 without a hint of irony cause he could break 40 easily.

He's ability to achieve that is insanely crazy to me.

Additionally, at 74.4%, louis king is doing the same for at least 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20+ ppg this season. Jokic is doing the exact same for 21, 22, 23, and 24+ ppg at 70.1 ts%. FACTS
JIMMY IS THE GOAT AT NBA CONTENT!!
Draymond watchin the Bulls play “that’s a half time score” right😂
This should be factored in and is definitely worth a mention.

@@daniellazo888 I mean the only players we've seen be this good at 34/35 is MJ & LeBron. Only time will tell that other players will still be as good.
That's what happens when you don't rely only on athleticism for your performance . He ages like fine wine
But compared big players, Steph is actually small. So he doesn't require that much conditioning like the bug guys.
It will start to become more common, with advances in nutrition, training, sports science, etc. you will see the average "prime" of players start to extend into their mid 30's.

Yes spitting facts these days gets you labelled an old head sadly
Hey Jimmy! Love your hard work! Keep it up!
Tryna get him to notice u💀
Luka has the best stats rn. Tatum the best team. Giannis is overall best. I do count defense into it A LOT (personally) so it’s Gianni’s for me but I’m happy for luka to win it also. Or Tatum
Giannis best player in the world he deserves the MVP and dpoy and curry ain't even top 25 in the league anymore
Nope. Luka
BANGER video jimmy, didn't really how crazy the MVP race was this season. Even more shocked Steph is at #10
Only reason SC was at 10 is because the Warriors are essentially a .500 team at the moment. NBA weighs team success really highly for MVP voting. His pure numbers would put him in the top 5 otherwise
It’s not even December tho they’re not keeping this up all season. But it’s still insane how amazing a lot of players are playing
I love how Luka is as good as he is in 2k simulations
