The aftermarket part shown in the video and that is linked in the description is a perfect replacement for the factory coil. Although there are differences, they are small there are no concernable effects.
Update. Received my $10 coil from China/Amazon. Installed per your directions and my Lawnboy started on the first pull. Thanks for the information on the coil check and replacement.
I thought you did a good job on this, you made it look simple. I have been ripped off twice paying over a hundred dollars for a shop repair to have this repaired for this same problem every few years. Now the third time, I am going to attempt repairing it myself.. Again Thank You!
Does the lawnboy still run good after a different coil? because I have the same lawnboy and I ordered the same coil and was wondering does it make a difference with that coil?

Bought and installed this coil in the same mower you have. Very informational, the mower is now backfiring. Can you tell me what the problem might be? You said it may start and run differently.
Make sure air gap on coil and spark plug gap is correct... Also make sure you are running fresh(newer than 30 days) low ethanol (less than 10%) gasoline... Also make sure kill wire that is connected to the coil does not have any chafe marks, is broken, or bare spots that could be grounding. Also make sure that your flywheel key is not partially sheared to where the timing could be off but still allow it to run. There is the slightest chance the coil that you received may be defective. That's usually not the case but it does happen occasionally.
Thanks for the video. Ordered a coil. Hope it is the reason mine won't start. It starts sometimes no rime or reason. Believe it's the coil. I have a 1980 lawnboy that aways starts for a backup. The newer one is beautiful when it runs but not reliable. My Dad aways used Lawnboy's. I have steep swails to cut so the 2 cycle beats the oil problems on a 4 cycle. FYI I found the plastic carborator would distort when tightened and the choke would not close until I loosened the carb mounting bolts.
I got this same mower with the same issue. At first, I thought it was a carb issue so I yanked on the starter rope until it snapped. Now, I cannot feed a new starter rope through the hole. Any thoughts on why this is?

This may be a bit tough to answer but I hope you will. I have an older Lawn Boy, much older than the one in this vid, more like a '77 model. The coil in mine has gone and its looking like the correct replacements ( 683321/ 94-7418/ or 36-056) are either hard to get or really pricey. My question is....would the coil in this vid work on an older machine? Mine is a solid state coil like yours. I realize that I will have to make a mounting bracket (no problem for me) to get it on but the real question; is the magnetic pole spacing on the flywheel the same so that if I am able to get it in the right spot will it work?....who knows. But...maybe if anyone knows its you if you work on a lot of different models. I have been fixing motors since I was a kid so I'm not afraid to give this a try....but it will be waste of time if the pole spacing on the flywheel magnets aren't the same. Fingers crossed that you will reply. I've had this lawnmower for 40 years and I'm kinda attached to it! lol :)
Wayne Petrevan, sorry, I really have no clue on that. And the fact that the air gap is so critical spacing would probably be even more so. You may want to jump on one of these antique mower forums to see if there's somebody out who has access to New Old Stock or maybe some sort of a replacement. I really don't know if that would work or not sorry again

The washers on the head bolts are directional. The convex side faces away from the cylinder head. Another note is that three Post-it sheets is close to the required .010" gap requirement, if no business card is handy.

Craig D Thanks.. winterizing is so hit miss.. too many variables. like,,,,, gas used, gas additives from the pump, alcohol content, humidity as it relates to geography climate, and storage location, 2 stroke vs 4 stroke. 2 stroke mix oil rating(cheap vs good), stabil vs seafoam. running carb dry vs leaving treated gas in. Personally, I use the highest quality of 2 stroke oil I can find (usually echo brand rated ISO-LEGD or at least ISO-EGD. and I leave gas in. No treating of fuel at all.. on four stroke Ill add some seafoam or stabil . never had an issue doing it this way storing the equipment in a very dry shed that has normal air circulation. BUT, there are many other ways people do theirs SO it is best to find someone in your region of the country that can tell you what is best for you(gas used,mix oil used,how they store it). good luck..

If you spray carburetor cleaner or starting fluid directly in the carburetor and you can get the mower to fire up and run with short burst being sprayed then you have a fuel delivery issue. If it does not spit sputter backfire or anything like that then you need to find out why you don't have spark
I have the same mower I'm not having trouble with the coil but I am having trouble with it starting the pull rope is not broke it pulls out and retracts back in like it should but it's not grabbing ahold of the engine to start/crank the engine over what is my problem

Could be coil, but usually coils just quit and never work again.. sounds like yours tries to run sometimes.. Try to run spraying carb cleaner in carburetor.. if it runs off carb spray then its not the coil..

I had the exact same experience! I went down to my local lawnmower repair shop and the owner gave me a lawn boy mower. The previous owner dropped it off because the primer bulb was destroyed and said he could have it. Well it turns out the coil was shot, but their only $11.98 on eBay.
At the beginning, I didn't show me trying to start it when the coil was bad , not sure why I needed to go out in the rain and show it running after the coil was replaced. The video was to show "How to replace a coil" It's NOT , "What a Lawnboy sounds like when running"
In other words, it didn't start. I know how it is. I throw parts at mowers and other vehicles until one of them--or a combination of them--does the trick.

It was a instructional video on how to replace a coil,,,, If you throw parts at a problem you are a "parts changer" if you diagnose and fix the problem right the first time you're a "mechanic"
nice lift were did you get it or did you modify something to work.i work on small engines and have been doing it on the floor and been looking for something i could use for push mowers and garden tractors.great video.

FYI If your coil is rusty you can sometimes clean the rust off and it will work fine.

Would this cause it to not start? If so that would make sense, I couldn't get it to start earlier before I noticed that was missing.
No, I don't think any airbox issue would cause it not to start. Unless the choke or air vane is being hindered by it in some way..
Good one ! Lawboys have a notorious does not start problem related to the Carb getting clogged, so I'm told by Home Dept,
