Yep they’re a pain to work on. I have a tc 300 series that uses an air vein governor. If you can order a new spring, I suggest that you order one or lock down the throttle in rabbit speed & do away with the throttle cable

I've had some carb issues with my Duraforce too, by the way that ribbed wheel under the air vain can be spun independently of it to adjust the tension on the spring. This video couldn't have come out at a better time! I'm working on my Duraforce too lol
Edit: I really should have watched a few seconds longer before commenting. I will post a link to a video in a separate comment that has some helpful info on the dial.

Had that mower since new early 90's, worked in a landscaping business for 20yrs, never had a single problem except a front wheel, and one of gears in tranny finally went. Bought a temporary 1 speed trans off eBay until i can find the proper one. Which is what I'm looking for now. Point is, best mower you will ever own. If ya get a chance to buy one and it's in decent shape, don't hesitate. Working on it once or twice over a 25yr span is well worth the trade off.

I love Lawn Boy 2 stroke mowers. I've been using them for about 40 years. The one I have now I bought new in 2003 for $350.
It is wonderful. It starts easily after sitting over the winter months, 1-2 pulls. It's 6.5 hp engine is very powerful and easily plows throught the highest, toughest grass, i.e., Bahaia. Also, no oil changing. Just mix oil with gas and that's all the lubrication the engine needs. Besides all that, mine is one of those with an aluminum deck, light weight and no rusting out.
I love my Lawn Boy and am sad that they were bought out by Toro, who ruined them. The 4 stroke versions with the stamped out steel decks were garbage.

That knob on the air vane adjust the rpms by about 50 or so for each click. Clockwise to increase, counter clockwise to slow it down. Duraforces spec about 3000 rpms but that is too slow in my opinion. I own 2 of them and run them both about 3400 rpms.

This is why I went to trade school and have been a certified OPE tech and master service technician for 30 years. OK, so no need whatsoever to remove the carb or mess with the governor spring. The dial on the throttle shaft is how you adjust engine speed. Use 2 fingers to turn it counter-clockwise to increase engine speed to 3300 RPM, turn it clockwise if speed is too high. 15 second fix, on the spot, boom just like that. I love your videos and all, but this one had me doing a real face palm.

Never owned a Lawn Boy, But had a #16785 Toro Two Cycle that used the Suzuki two-cycle, bullet proof engine. Was a bad day when the fed/gov mandate to cycle mowers out of business. Had I been thinking I'd bought up a couple when they were available so I'd have one today to use.

The federal government never mandated 2 strokes go away. They mandated emission standards that were only going to get more stringent over time. Toro and other manufacturers didn't want to spend millions in R&D to tackle just how to make burning your engine lubricant a clean process. Which is not a simple problem to solve. It's a lawn mower, not the space shuttle after all and the mower market is very competitive. But now, I see folks spending $1000 on battery powered walk behinds. Never would have believed that. I have several of these LB 2 strokes that go back to the mid 1960s. They still run great.

Turn the round dial below the air vain. One direction will increase idle speed, the other direction will decrease idle speed, you will feel the wheel clicking to different position, takes a bit of force. This can be done with engine running. Note: turning wheel while running moves vain . I.E when turning wheel and vain makes engine rev up, and you feel the wheel click to new positon, your actually turning idle speed down. The opposite is also true

I would love to have an old lawn boy if it was self propelled and had an aluminum deck and came with a chute and a bag. Just for the nostalgia really. I used to used these from time to time when I was a kid working for my neighbor. I always found lawn boys to be cool mainly because of the 2 stroke engine. I never really cared for the right front wheel being off set or the bag set up on the side. It made the mower bulky and hard to maneuver and cut in tight spaces. While I love 2 strokes these lawn boys seemed to lack a little bit power compared to the 4 strokes when it came to cutting the really thick tall grass. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I remember.

The plastic gear knob below the air vane sail can be turn either direction to adjust the throttle spring. Thus control the engine speed. I heard the lawnboy engine can run at 4000rpm. The two stroke engine always runs faster. I did rebuilt one that they have a steel sleeve cylinder while the Briggs and Stratton four stroke flat head is aluminum cylinder. The old lawnboy have needle bearing on the crankshaft . That's why the old lawnboy two stroke run faster yet last .

The throttle won't work that way. All engines that encounter varying loads MUST have a governor of some kind to maintain rpm at varying loads. The governor on these is the air vane. Higher RPM sends more airflow over the vane closing the throttle, slower speed means less air over the vane and the spring closes the throttle. If you hard connected the throttle cable to the throttle plate, everything would seem fine until you encounter even the slightest load on the engine and it would bog down until the load goes away and it would eventually go back to the previous no load rpm.

mr garage, can you help me find out what's wrong with my mower? i have a ride on mower with a briggs model 28 engine, 12.5hp, it simply does not want to start 100% of the times, most of the times it just spins and shoot flames through the carb, but does not start, the flywheel key is intact, i checked like 40 times and i can't find what's the problem, i also honed the cylinder and put new rings but the issue persists

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  ปีที่แล้ว

thank you Danial Gilstrap for the question.
For me, I would get a large tool set. Something in the 200 piece set.
      Also the brand, doesn't matter.
After that, a good variety of power tools, impacts, grinders, and it doesn't matter if you go air or battery powered. Then focus on all diagnostic tools like compression tester, leak down testers, spark, and for good measure
      an ultrasonic cleaner.

Can anyone help me on this? I compression tested a warm briggs flathead mower with hand pull starts and it yeilds a lousy 60psi. However.. Using a drill to spin the flywheel, the compression gauge outputs 105psi. The mower seems to run fine but I like to take photos of the gauge for proof of it's condition when I sell it. Any help would be appreciated.

your numbers are spot on, when comparing pull rope readings to drill readings.

Honda 4 stroke OHC fanboy here. Two stroke engines are very finicky when it comes to adjustments and keeping constant RPM. Having to deal with mixed oil/gas is also an additional chore. Honda 4 stroke engine mowers seem to fall apart all around the engine, generally wheels, drive belts/mechanisms, cables which IMHO seem easier to deal with. Love these videos and the thought process used to repair the equipment. Keep up the excellent work.

Eliminator Performance has a great video on how to adjust these, it's called "How to Adjust RPM on a Lawnboy". As they get older, they also need the idle jet drilled out a little larger with a micro drill bit #78 (0.016") for a smoother idle.
