EAST LINDSEY PARISH #29: NORTH COTES
North Cotes - “Northern Cottages”
This week in East Lindsey we come to a place on the coast. Its not a coastal resort of the likes of Mablethorpe, Skegness or Anderby Creek - they will all come soon though. On the face of it, this one doesn’t look like much, especially if you’re just using Google Maps. Dig a bit deeper here though and you find North Cotes has a lot to talk about. A tiny place laid out mainly along one road between the A1031 and the hamlet of Tetney Lock, being located close to the North Sea is what made today’s village important for a number of military reasons.
In 1914, during WWI, North Cotes Airfield was opened by the army, right on the edge of the coast at North Cotes Fitties. Two years later it was converted into a forward landing ground for anti Zeppelin patrols. In WWII it was active again, and was, in 1963, one of the few airfields to be opened up yet again - this time to prevent possible nuclear attacks. There’s more on that later in this video, as well as an actual walk around the village itself.
You’d never guess, given the airfield is literally right on the shoreline, that North Cotes even had any military history - other than perhaps the swathe of war graves that can be found within its 13th century churchyard.
