- EAST LINDSEY PARISH #28: MINTING
Minting - “Place of Mynta’s People”
Our next mission in East Lindsey is to take on Minting, a village that’s spread out over quite a sizable area - and has a lot more than you might initially think it does. Minting is an unusually named settlement. Even though its etymology is uncertain, I’ve gone with “Place of Mynta’s people” because it sounds more plausible. Others believe it literally means “Mint place”, a possible reference to the herb that might grow in your garden.
Minting has always been heavily connected to neighboruing Gautby. Both are set in gently undulating farmland with the extensive Lincolnshire Limewoods to the west, and both have historic connections. Whilst the Domesday Book didn’t mention Gautby, it did refer to two places called Minting. They were recorded as “Mentinghes”. One of these is believed to have been the now lost village of Little Minting, which lies somewhere within Gautby’s boundaries.
From a historical standpoint, Minting was most notable for its small Benedictine Priory which existed with a somewhat chequered history from the early 13th century until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. There’s also a pretty tragic tale to tell here centred around the pub - the Sebastopol Inn.
We’ll talk about that and more as we venture around an East Lindsey village once again!

Hi Andy
Interesting lil village.
Connected to it's past history..
Great video.
Thanks
Another very interesting and informative video. Well done. Many thanks.
Hi Andy. Loving the East Lindsey series so far. One of my favourite places as it's just so varied with the coast, wolds and quaint little market towns. I hear Grimsby getting a mention. I wonder if you're off to Holton le clay next?
It's not next...but I have been. It's North Cotes next. Then Tetney, then Holton le Clay
I don't know why, but I feel that West Lindsey is my preference when I've been around Lincolnshire.
