    Another fun fact: their joints operate more similarly to a cat, than a dog. This allows them to do that "crouching Tiger" crawl, which allows them to be extra stealthy when herding.

    I have a border collie/Labrador cross. He's in charge of protecting the chickens that free range on my land. We’ve never lost a bird since he’s been alive, but that’s not because we tried training him in livestock protection. I mean, we did give him that training, but at every turn he found better and more effective ways to do his job. I stopped trying to tell him what to do and just trust him to take care of things which he does.

I escaped my home and Cindy, came and found me and held the hem of my dress in her teeth and gently lead me back home and would not allow anyone near me. • @danielduncan6806
      @danielduncan6806 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Hmmm, liking the happy hoodie is not a qualification of "Good Dog". It is a matter of personal taste. If a dog is willing to put up with the noise of the blower(each individual dog has its own unique personality), the happy hoodie is irrelevant. And clearly this particular dog was willing to put up with the sound of the blower. Additionally, trying to escape the bath for the first time is entirely natural, and due to its nature, would disqualify it, too, as a disqualification of "Good Dog". And personally, I believe you should re-examine what the definition of "Good Dog" is.
      And I will remind you, each and every individual dog has its own unique personality. That is a thing. I will give you an example. I had two collie-border collie mixes, from the same litter. One would do anything to please the humans, was the perfect dog, to his very last day on this Earth. The other one could not have cared any less. Both were raised the exact same way. But the two were so distinct from each other, not even training could "fix" it. One would love to chase after the ball, to get the smile and the customary "good boy!" when it returned the ball for another throw. The other, would just watch you throw it and not give a shit. One would try his hardest, jump his highest, to catch the frisbee, for the cheers of the humans. The other would just watch, because he just did not care about any of it. And so-on and so-on. One drank the human Kool-Aid, the other hated the human Kool-Aid. The two had distinct personal tastes and personalities. I loved them both unconditionally, both were "Good Boys".

Shoved my fist in the other's mouth, then beat it down and nearly killed it. Three years ago, I shot one dead. Have had TERRIBLE experience with this breed of dog. Smart perhaps, but more like dangerous. This breed needs to be illegal due to its aggression, stubborn and "herding" Mentality.

Which is also why you should never have them chase a laser, it can lead to server OCD. They are a herding breed that is trying to chase something they can never catch. Collies are so smart that my wife and I constantly have to come up with new and creative ways to talk about things that cause him to get excited (treats, toys, walks or any kind of outing) or stressed (baths, or anything he is afraid of which is everything). Originally we used alternative words but then he learned them, so we switched, and then again. Sometimes we will use foreign words or archaic English to trick him but sometimes he still catches on. He seems to read our body language or something, he knows we are trying to be secretive.

    • @a20axf

      I swear sometimes they actually understand English fluently, but just don’t let us catch on! The way they understand our communication and can communicate right back blows my mind. Granted, you have to be tuned into each dog’s nuances so it can be difficult for outsiders to pick up on subtle things that are obvious cues to us. Ours looks us up and down and doesn’t even move at walk time if we don’t have the right walking trousers or shoes on. There’s so many other things, but BC’s are just incredible and I’d genuinely struggle to have a different breed now. One of our best exports 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    A friend of mine had a border collie that was....erm... shall we say 'different'. Whatever you placed on the floor, she would try to herd it. A book, a phone, a pair of jeans, it didn't matter. She just got into that crouching position and circled whatever was on the floor. And she was never aware of her surroundings so she would constantly smack her head on tables and chairs. It was a hilarious show to watch.
    I was told that they went to a real shepherd with her and she just went up to the sheep, happy as a daisy. She sniffed them gently, one of the sheep baaaa'ed at her. She realized "Oh crap it's actually *A L I V E* !!" and then she bolted away down the field. They had to get in the car to catch her as it didn't take long before she was half a kilometre away. 😂

    Distant family member had a border collie. He was fantastically clever, and would herd the rabbits into their hutch from all over their garden by racing around in front of them and stamping his front feet until they turned around and went in the direction he wanted them to.
    He had a box of toys, all with different names, and he knew them all. He was asked to "fetch grandpa" while I was there once. Grandpa was a Postman Pat toy - named after her Dad who was a postie. It was at the bottom of the box, but he'd dig through the other toys and bring grandpa. Then he was asked to "fetch my new socks" and he'd run upstairs and come down with a pair of balled-socks. But they were the wrong ones, so she'd emphasise, "No, my NEW socks", and he'd race back upstairs with the wrong ones, returning seconds later with the right pair.
    It was amazing to see first hand.

      Like many breeds of dogs, Border Collies were bred to serve a specific function - in their case, herd sheep (and other livestock as well). What was important to the persons who owned them and used them, was their value as a working dog, and NOT their appearance! Over time, by choosing the best working dogs as parents to the next generation of puppies, the working instinct genes were concentrated - and the ones that didn’t work, became pets for non farmers that did not contribute to the future of the breed. In the original breed clubs that developed, the written breed standard is far looser - this is a dog defined by how it WORKS, and NOT its appearance in the “beauty contest” of the dog show ring. In at least one Border Collie registry, if the owner even shows it ONCE in the AKC Conformation show ring, it *will* lose its registration papers for that original registry. Herding instinct and talent is a very complex, multiple gene trait that very quickly dilutes and evaporates if owners start to select for other characteristics, like head shape, ear set, coat type, back length, foot placement during movement, and the like. Border Collies in the USA that were bred for the conformation show ring (what you see when you watch Westminster Kennel Club show on TV) look VERY different from those that work on real farms and ranches all over the world, and they most likely don’t have 1/10th of the instinct or 1/100th of the ability to do the job for which they were developed.

      We have taken up into the fells here in Cumbria and a lot of farmers have sheep that just roam the area
      Meaning on our walks up there we encounter a lot of sheep.
      Our dog has displayed and shown herding instincts.
      I have a lot of experiences with Collies.
      I have relatives who are farmers up here in Cumbria where Collies are probably used to there best ability up in the fells
      I have known a lot of collies even ones that have NEVER even been on a farm and are generations from actual herding Collies
      and yet I have seen them interact with sheep just as naturally as farm collies , not with as much skill tho but that comes with experience not instinct

    I remember that my Grandpa had two border collies on his sheep & cattle ranch. I remember they were Betty & Roy. All Grandpa had to do to round up his sheep was to yell, "Go around 'em!" to Betty, the elder dog. Roy did what she did. ❤️❤️

    Seeing Groot brought me some fond memories of my Border boy, Bernie, who passed in 2014. Groot's mannerisms are very similar to his, as is her evidently tolerant personality. I still miss Bernie a lot, but am always glad to be reminded of him.

    When I was little, surrounded by siblings and cousins, our family dog was a Border Collie, called Lady (I know, so original). Lady ran rings around us when we played out. She totally babysat us. I'm now 62, and I've always remembered her. She was the best girl.

      I was 'raised by a border collie' also. Mom would hand me chunks of milkbone treats to shove in various pockets, tell him to "keep her in the yard" and turn us loose in our 3/4 acre & unfenced yard. It was the absolute best childhood. I have had several other types of dogs since, but am particularly drawn to the collie & aussie types (2 of them asleep at my feet right now).

      I hope so but many Border Collies, especially young ones, have a mind that goes 120 in a 50 zone. So, they'll usually always be stressed by having to stand still and do nothing. They usually hate things that require some 'chill'.

    Collies 100& are not for everyone. They are the sweetest dogs but have SO much energy and prone to being quite neurotic. My old Border Collie is still needing three walks a day at 14 years old!

    • @antiquegirl6505
      @antiquegirl6505 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I totally agree, have mostly had herding breeds. They do best when you give them plenty of exercise and a JOB. My mother always said I was raised by our border collie, I was his little sheep, to herd and keep in our yard. I had a Shetland Sheepdog who would get obsessed and would "Sheltie-spin" in tight circles, if he couldn't be walked or exercised much. Now there are 2 Aussie-mix rescues here who herd each other and play lots of tag and games, on top of walks and dog-park visits. They keep me active instead of seditary and sitting too much.
      Speaking of which, gotta go, dog-park time!!!!

    When I was a kid we had a pair of border collies. They were littermates and too pair-bonded to work with so we sent one to a farm (for real, the place ran a public pumpkin patch every October and hosted school field trips year-round so we got to see our former dog often.) A good 2+ years after he was rehomed there someone left a gate open, he got loose, and even though the new owner was a licensed vet the dog's ear tattoo was never re-registered to him and someone was directed to bring him to us. He recognized the area blocks away and the people returning him decided to get out and walk. He lead them to my best friend's house 1 street over, who then recognized him and showed them to our house. 2+ years and he still knew his way around our neighbourhood, was pleased as punch to see us, and went right back to chasing his sister around the back yard like he'd never left. When the new owners came to pick him up they ended up with both dogs because the sister wouldn't let him leave without her. Very smart, very loyal dogs.
    It was so cool every time we visited that farm. We'd spot him out there, being a dog with a job, loving every second of it, and then he'd see us and be our shadow until we left. The sister ended up on the neighbouring farm's property keeping an old lady and her horses company because she proved too neurotic for the job with smaller animals.

      Neurotic is definitely a good word for most of them I have met! I have a feeling the ones I met were just not exercised enough and developed separation anxiety and all kinds of weird behaviors and definitely makes me understand I wouldn’t be able to give them enough exercise lol. My dogs like to run around a bit then take a nap 😂

    My border collie mix is almost 16 now, but she was the fastest dog in her prime. She loved starting foot races at the dog park. She was also a natural herder, which didn’t always go over well at the dog park.
    Now she’s mostly just really good at napping, but she still gets a pep in her step on occasion.

    I adopted a 2 year old a few months ago. Doesn’t bark or whine, and he’s a big cuddle boy. He’s the sweetest easiest dog in the world. I do get out at least 2x a day for 20-60 min. Sometimes more on the weekends. He won’t play catch. Just likes chilling. Does chase other dogs and small rodents but that’s about it. Just the biggest sweet heart. He’s asleep with his head on my shoulder and chest right now😂❤️
