    For:
    - A dog that has been abused
    - A dog that has never been professionally groomed before
    - A shelter dog
    - An adult dog that hasn't been conditioned as a puppy
    - A dog breed that isn't characteristically super friendly (like a golden retriever)
    - A dog that has been neglected
    - A dog in pain from health issues

Charlie has endured much more than just a lifetime. Probably emotional abandonment, trauma and neglect, leading to poor eyesight and mental scars, people have been tough on him. You can tell he wasn't super comfortable most of the groom but he wanted to pull through because this woman he'd just met was saying he was a good boy, he's so precious. We don't deserve dogs, and Charlie deserved everything but to be treated the way he was 😭😭😭
Edit: I want to add that I admire the family that gave him his forever home. Charlie trusts people, and I think his family had a big part in showing him he will be loved and taken care of! Because of them Charlie can be a dog once more, and that's beautiful

I think part of it also is, that dogs don't really have a choice, like most people do. They are OWNED by people, being dependant on us for every single need, being as basic as getting food, being let out to pee and having a place to sleep.
Dog owners must understand the responsibility that comes along with being in such a power position.
And, as I said, I think that factors into the thing that dogs almost always forgive and trust again, if a nice person comes along, no matter the abuse they have been through
.. they just don't have a choice, if they want to survive. Dogs are also pack animals, so for most of them it should come naturally to "obey", if done in a dog conform way..

Sad thing is, though, they are people. Mental illness, abuse, and poverty are endless cycles where victims later become perpetrators. Maybe his former owners were themselves abused. Maybe they were mentally ill. I just think it's important to remember that everything is connected. When a dog like Charlie is saved, he might save his new owner from depression. When a child is saved from being abused by his dad, that might save a dog from being abused by the child in the future. Just as an example. Instead of focusing on our (natural) disgust for abusers, let's focus on making a better world and helping as many animals and people as we can. :)

My fiancé rescued a formerly abused dog once. He was an extremely elderly pom-pap who was found wandering in a parking lot, his fluffy coat so matted he walked with a hobble and covered in fleas and dirt. He had an eye that had been injured at some point and a scar on his throat from de-barking surgery, where they cut a dog's vocal cords so they can't bark. As a result of the surgery, he communicated in raspy snorting sounds and pawing at things. He was so fearful he would not even eat in the same room as people for a long time. But my fiancé worked with him and by the time he passed in summer 2017 he was a friendly, sweet-natured little old man. She only had him for a few years, but she is glad he got to learn that humans aren't all terrible before the end of his life. Thank you to all groomers who help the rescue process along, my fiancé does still remember the person who very calmly and patiently shaved all the little old man's mats out so he could walk properly again and receive flea treatments.

I can't imagine the horror that poor dog lived thru. Seeing him now and not knowing his backstory is a solid testament to the love and kindness that his new owners have bestowed upon him! To his former abusive owner out there, just know that there is a special place in Hell reserved for those who inflict cruelty and harm on defenseless animals. You'll be answering for your sins.

People are pretty fucking terrible. I once called animal control after responding to a third party domestic call. While at the residence I found over a dozen dogs tied up in the back yard, including one that appeared to have died of dehydration, or starved to death, because it couldn't reach food or water.
Then, as we went to collect the body, he tried to stand up- maggots leaking out of his open chest wound. We cut the chain and rushed him to the local humane society. I never followed up because there wasn't an outcome I could control or be happy with.
I'll never forget that little fuck who owned those dogs. I'll never forgive him, either.
