Sweetest dog ever.. only time when I ever saw her show just the slightest hint of aggression was when the groomer came to the door for her. Unfortunately within around 6 months the older, Charlie, had to finally go to sleep due to just being super old, joint issues, blind, surviving a stroke etc etc after a full life with a stage 3 heart murmur.
His sister Daisy now lives in Paris with us (after flying over with our Scottish terrier Ava) aged 13 with no issues in sight except being selectively deaf.

It's okay and healthy to take a "moment" to be sad and grieve, just don't let yourself pitch a tent and stay in that grief. If you need help, get it. You and your future are worth it.
Don't let yourself stay in the house either. Get out and talk to people. You're not alone. Say hello and smile at people. When they smile back, it's uplifting for you and for them. Do something you like to do. It doesn't have to cost money, to be fun or interesting. Then...spruce up your resume and start applying for positions that fit or you want to try. One door WILL open. Keep your head up and know that you GOT this! x

@@FlowerPup_AZ Our Cavalier came from a good breeder and still got the heartdisease age 6 and died a month later. His parents outlived him, just because the parents are cleared at the moment of breeding doesnt mean the pup is free from having the disease in the future. Heart disease in dogs often goes unrecognized for some time-even years. The most common cause of heart disease is characterized by a long preclinical stage when the dog is asymptomatic. Not to even mention all the Cavaliers that get the disease at an older age while they breed with them age 2. Its not as simple as '' just go for good breeding instead of backyard breeding'' because if that was the case my dog wouldve been fine. Theres a good reason Sweden banned the breed.

FYI- since we started feeding Jude fresh food (veterinarian recommended Chi Dog for us), he’s lost all that extra weight and had zero yeast or skin issues. Diet really makes all the difference. @@thetemperamentalecnomist1261 make sure to research the breeder if you are going for it, cause a good breeder has everything to say for the lifespan of your cavalier. A good breeder will have screened the parents for several illnesses and made sure neither parents have any heart issues. I'd make sure its someone who has worked with the breed for a long time and knows all the good and the bad about their dogs.
The breed has been slowly gaining better health the past decade, with breeders screening the prospective parents for all the known illnesses and conditions and they also dont breed any dogs under the age of 2 years old, tho many wait longer in order to weed out the ones who might get a heart murmur later on. Despite what many think, the breed is slowly getting healthier and have already increased the lifespan of healthy dogs by several years.

It all happened within a month after diagnoses, he still looked so healthy and young too so it was so confusing. It was a bit traumatising as a child. They are still the most gentle and sweet dogs. Thank you Vanessa for warning about the highly possible risks and just being honest about them.

Yay, a Cavalier! They are the sweetest and snuggliest companions. Finding a responsible breeder is a must, I think. We had a male and a female from the same breeder, and they never had ANY health issues (heart, skin, or ear issues, etc) until their final year or so (both lived to about 14-15 years old), and when they finally passed it wasn't due to heart disease. They also weren't overweight though, as our breeder gave us strict instructions, haha

Wow she looks SO MUCH like my Cavalier who was my first dog. I picked out this breed as my first dog when I was 6 because the deal with my parents was "You can only get a dog if you do research, read through this AKC dog breed encyclopedia and make an educated decision about what would be right for our family" aka they wanted to stall me from getting a dog since I would NOT stop asking every 5 seconds for years and I was driving them crazy. Unfortunately for them, I was a hyperliterate child, meaning they didn't realize just how far ahead my reading ability was compared to the usual 6 year old, so I came back having read it cover to cover, highlighted it, and taken notes and picked out Cavaliers and had a whole speech ready as to why they were the perfect breed for us 😂
They're such lovely dogs. It's a shame that it's SO common for them to have heart issues. We lost ours when she was only 6 years old because she had horrible heart problems. But she was so smart and sweet and up for anything. She loved cuddling with us, but also was up for me constantly teaching her new tricks, or going on long hikes with my dad and I. We would have kept getting Cavaliers if it weren't for the insane amount of health problems they have.

I had the same experience as a child. I read, researched, and really wanted a Scottish Deerhound. I finally chose an English Springer Spaniel. My Dad was a hunter so I knew I had a puppy coming. Sherry was a wonderful first dog.
Oh and I did get my deerhound when I was 35.

I do expect I’ll get one in a few years, though, once the baby I’m having in September is old enough to understand how to properly interact with animals and I have the mental bandwidth to dedicate to training the pup.

Haha my parents did the same when I was four and I wanted a Golden! Dad promised me I could get one when I was 10 and thought I'd forget... then I turned 9 and excitedly said "I get my dog next year!" and he realized he'd made a terrible mistake lol. To his credit, he let me have a Pomeranian (I was a tiny 10 yo and a Golden would probably have flattened me regularly), and I loved my little boy so much.

As other people in the comments have alread mentioned, breeding cavaliers is illegal in Norway. It's a violation of the Animal Welfare Act in Norway because the breed has so many hereditary health problems that no Cavalier King Charles Spaniel alive can be considered healthy. All Cavaliers alive in the world today descended from only six ancestors. At least one of those six ancestors had mitral valve disease, meaning the left atrioventricular valve of the heart doesn't close properly when it pumps blood into the vascular system, leading to heart failure. That one of the "original six" passed this condition on to a huge percentage of the breed because the gene pool is so small to begin with - and for a long time, a lot of breeders irresponsibly used Cavaliers that have it.
Even worse, 90% of Cavaliers have syringomelia, a tendency to form cysts within the spinal cord that can paralyse them and lead to various neurological symptoms - like scratching at nothing for no apparent reason or weakness in the front legs that causes them to fall down. These are just two examples. Some of these neurological symptoms can be very painful. It's terrible!
The entire list of known health problems and hereditary conditions this breed has, is too long for one TH-cam comment. It's as thick as a phone book.
Basically it comes down to this: If you consider buying a purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, you need to understand that you're getting a very inbred, very inherently unhealthy dog, from a breed that has been completely messed up, genetically. They're one of the unhealthiest dog breeds in the world. Even if you get one from a responsible ethical breeder who checks their dogs for heart problems etc., it's still going to be a fundamentally genetically flawed dog that will be very prone to develop massive health problems throughout its life. People who buy purebreds or "backyard breeder specials" of this breed need to know that they're helping to perpetuate a very bad situation.

    • @anne.8384
      @anne.8384 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

There are some right here but a lot of wrong to. You should be better informed before you talk. The 90 % syringomyelia in the breed is just not true. The breed is not forbidden. If the Supreme Court agrees with Lagmannsretten, it will be forbidden with registered breeding - not forbidden to own a cavalier. Which is totally bonkers because that means that there will be no control at all with the breed’s health. And if you check statistics with insurance companies in Norway, you’ll learn that the Cavalier is not on top of the list of breeds with difficulties. But it need new blood - that is true. And there is already a program in progress to do so. The heart issue is an important factor and there is a lot of work going in to make it better. For now it is totally legal to breed, own and sell cavaliers in Norway. In August the Supreme Court will have a final verdict in the case.

MY HEART. We had one of these when I was growing up, a ruby colored piece of gold. She was the sweetest, purest little angel that has ever walked this earth. Sailor's little whimpering made me remember how my sweet baby vocalized and oh my god. This year marked the 10th year after her death and I still miss her so much. I love a cavaliers nature and temperament, but I can never ever get another one because of their health problems. No living being should have a head so small that their brain can't fit inside.
I remember our cavalier showing "aggression" (more like being a little bit assertive) one single time. We were visiting my grandpa and my uncle was also there with his young puppy. The puppy was already a lot bigger than our old lady and super energetic and wanted sooo much to interact with her. Finally she ran out of energy and patience, went underneath an armchair, and when the puppy stuck her head in there, our dog made this one single growly snarl sound and the puppy backed away (and we kept her away to give our cavalier some breathing room).
THANK YOU for showing us Sailor. What a gem she is!

My aunt had a KCCS and he was such a sweetheart. He played nice, good with the kids, good with other animals, only drawbacks he had was that he was possibly the dumbest creature alive and had an iron stomach. He once ate an entire whole pant leg. We only realized it was whole when he pooped it out and it came out as the entire length of fabric. He was a scavenger so he’d eat anything the second it fell to the floor, so it’s a wonder he didn’t get poisoned because he definitely ate things that dogs are not supposed to have. He did also have multiple tumors that had to be periodically removed. He was a big fan of running into the road, but surprisingly he died of old age instead. Miss the little bugger

It is Norway who has banned the breed, not Sweden.
That said, my maternal aunt and her family had a Cavalier, but sadly they had to put the dog down after only a year or two. Simply because it developed a severe case of epilepsy, a common disease for the breed. It was so severe that they were worried that one of the kids would find her dead one day because of it.

She'd gone deaf at age 6 after an ear infection and also had heart problems and pancreatitis for years, but she seemed to be doing well, right until she had a stroke out of nowhere. Life is so unfair to them when it comes to their health issues, but they live life to the fullest and have nothing but love for everyone. When I was a kid we had one that we used to call a grumpy old man and boy did he have a personality, in fact, we could have swore it was an alcoholic (I know I know, we never gave it to him), he'd always find a way to sneak around the furniture without being seen to get at the pint glass or open can my father would keep at the side of the chair and before anyone was none the wiser, he'd have emptied half the glass or knocked the can over (on carpet so you didn't hear it) and sit there lapping it up...yep, old Buster was a right little bugger.

With this breed you REALLY have to find a good breeder. My family's cavalier is 7 and in amazing health, no heart problems. And very good teeth too which is always great haha. But, the cavalier I grew up with (a tricolor like Sailor,) had his heart condition diagnosed when he was six. We had to put him down when he was 13 in 2020. :( He was a very very sweet dog. The younger 7 year old however, is is so sweet and actually in great health, you may have to invest more money in a good breeder at first but it really pays off. (also the rubys are crazy sometimes haha but SO sweet and awesome and intelligent.) The breed is so sweet, just be responsible and find a good breeder who is actively trying to better the health of the bloodline. :D

We aren’t sure if someone was a blacksmith or from Black county Ireland (that was what my Grandmother tried digging into). My Dad’s family came down from Canada to the US and was in NY and Connecticut.
My Great Grandfather left to get milk and left my Great Grandmother’s with 3 kids to raise by herself. Also our family came over after the US civil war so it hasn’t been here that long. Never even thought maybe the last name might have come from a different language. Ancestry DNA says my Dad and his sister’s ancestor’s are mainly English, Irish, Scottish, and Western European (like French).

We took over our Cav when my grandmother started having too much trouble walking and giving her the exercise she deserves.
Knock on wood she has still yet to develop any heart issues and she turned 8 this year. She does have an issue where her hip can jump out of place and she has Osteoarthritis but those have both been manageable through keeping her in good shape and neither have been actually life threatening in any way so far.
She really is the sweetest dog and although she can sometimes bark at a passing dog (if she is in a place that she thinks she needs to guard) she wouldn't actually hurt a fly.
Definitely very crazy about food tho and will eat anything she finds outside, one of her favourite things being toilet paper and paper towels...

I once had a dog adopted after it was weaned. Her mom was a Springer Spaniel and a pointer champion. Her father was a 16 inch Beagle. Some puppies were wire haired, some long haired like this dog,and some short haired. One puppy looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts comics, but with brown brow spots like this dog but a short haired version, and a black saddle like this dog. Thanks for bringing back a fond memory.
