the SP is a tough beast and i am definitely an MPC guy, but i learned to sample and loop on an SP404. my ear got a lot better as a result haha

The thing about these 404s is that they have a sound, a good one. I use mine for the vinyl warp and other effects. Also capturing basic stereo samples to mess with.

Great Video! Once you've used the 404 religiously for a year, it's a breeze. It has its pros & cons but they are very fun to use.

After chopping something on the SP the reward of just playing the sample feels much better than the Mpc :)
Same thing for me! the pads on my 1000 were so bad that I've gotten way more familiar with the work flow for this device. Fortunately I just bought new pads and buttons, otherwise the SP is my comfort zone.

I’ve been feeling very uninspired lately so I’ve been digging into your videos, I have an SP and this is making me want to dig in- thanks man. Also dig the name change and that you’re focusing on different areas it’s cool!
this is so sick, that sample is crazy , been wanting an sp for the longest but havnt made just enough for it
keep saving man.. its so worth it, peeps say chopping is a chore but DAMN it couldn't be easier and more "natural feeling" I love mine
also the compression effect on the 404 is so unique, that's one thing he should have added to his beat :)

The SX and the A use the exact same FX engine. Outside of the MIDI compatibility with the TR8 it is an identical machine.

you found the mark key finally ahaha its actually not a limited machine, it just doesnt make it so you push a button or wipe your finger across a screen to get what you want, people are so lazy these days. want everything done for them. time practise and learning the ins and outs makes for way more creativity and work to get a new feel and discover new techniques making it a whole load more enjoyable, once you take the time to read the instructions of course
Agreed, the SP404 makes you think and work more...but for YOUR benefit as an artist. It's not trying to make things hard, it's trying to make you slow down and think about the music.

I’ve had an 404 for a little over a month now and the mark button hack is gonna speed up my workflow. I’ve spent hours just chopping through samples lmao.
Bill Evans, one of my favorites. I’ve got the OG silver 404, cutting samples has been tricky. I’m not really a sample dude, I just collect sounds and use them as textures, I’m thinking of picking up the MPC One, having a visual wave form to edit seems like a dream. lol.

Damn that looked like hard work. Great job. Wasn't sure about the chops and drums at first but when they all came together... perfect.... :-) Was thinking of playing around with a hardware sampler like the SP but enjoying my Ableton comfort zone too much at the moment... definitely enjoying the videos with different gear.

@@Lolife86 I haven't explored mine to it's fullest potential yet, but just in my first use with one it was worth the price for me.
Coming from an SP-404, I was able to make my first beat / loop within 15 minutes. The FX are great and just fun, like an SP-404's too.
I definitely see it mainly as something to just have a lot of fun with rather than something to really make serious music with though.

I came across your channel when i was looking into the AKAI 500 which im still considering to buy but now that you posted this up of the Roland i feel like it might be a better fit for me. I'm a Maschine user so im at the point where im comfortable with my current workflow but i like your suggestion in getting out of one's comfort zone. I love the DAWless flow of this unit. I could definitely use a break from starting at a computer screen and simply making music anywhere i want to. Thanks again for uploading this! You just got yourself another subscriber. Great video man. By any chance do you know of any video references teaching how to get great at chopping manually? Your chops came out great and I feel mine need some improvement.
I mostly look for sounds on their own without drums. Once you find sounds like that you can chop them with different start points, it's all about trying and seeing what cuts fit your flavour.

You need to truncate your mark points after each copied chop then reset your make point on the pad that was copied prior.
Sounds like adult swim! Watching you and others mess around with this device makes me anxious because there's no DAW! I get what you're saying though try to get out of your comfort zone. Maybe one day.

what do you mean by a 'cut'? just the bit you want to sample?
I like the SP404 alot... But one of things i cant stand about this machine is the drum feel... The beats sit like english royalty at opera on this unit... They need to come up with an iv drip mixed wit cocaine & Tequila that you can plug into the sequencer!!

what advantadges do you find while using an SP 404 or an MPC rather than using a DAW and like fl studio or logic pro?
it's a dedicated machine with dedicated buttons, it feels good to work with dedicated hardware, feels like you're more connected to your music.

I am using a different machine to create more content and have different gear to compare and make more videos. I am still making videos on the Mpc and all new gear that I can get.

Hey Marlow! What do you think of the SP just for sampling sounds into it and make use of it' s FX and record those processed sounds into an MPC? In my case it would be the MPC 1000. Then chop my samples in the MPC and sequence my beat from there. THX!
